I was a sales manager at a Lexus store in the early oughts. Some local wag had bought a bunch of Lexus badges and rebadged his Tundra, which led to a lot of guys coming in to see the new Lexus pickup like the one they had seen around town. I also had people come in to see the "new" Lexus they had seen in the Tom Cruise movie "Minority Report." Had to inform them that car would be out in 2054!

@@danielmeador1991 Well that first part I can’t determine whether it’s true or just BS, not only that but it’s rather moot whether people use it or not. That being said, if any other window goes out of whack in the vehicle, you’d have to go through the trouble dismantling the door panels just to get to the problem. It’ll be no different trying to fix the rear window.
I understand why Toyota didn’t go crazy with all the extras (pro power, weird tailgate, etc…) with all the complications they could cause. Toyota, and especially the Tundra has the best reliability reputation in the industry, so it only makes sense that all the extra stuff didn’t make it through the design. And to add further to the pro power thing, Tundras are typically not a fleet truck / work truck in the same way the F-150 or GM vehicles are. Tundras are mainly for personal use or long-range driving (hot shot drivers in the oil industry). How many construction companies have you seen with a fleet of Tundra work trucks? Not to mention, they got rid of the work truck trim for this generation. Only thing that disappointed me with the capstone is that they didn’t go all the way with the satin metal look - I wish they made everything finished in that matte silver finish. It’s weird to have the satin trip on the doors, grille, and bumpers, but the mirror caps and door handles are chrome? Just match it for gods sake!

The Sequoia Capstone already has a very similar interior. Expecting the Lexus GX to have a similar interior to this, because, IMO, this interior is better than both the 300 series Land Cruiser and LX 600.
3:06 I’ve never seen Ford offer a blackout package on their Platinum/Limited F150s. They offer trim levels where the grille and trim is black, but not a black out package. If anything Toyota is the one that offers that. The Toyota 4Runner Limited Nightshade comes to mind
I will still consider the Tundra Capstone or Premium still but...19/22 is extremely disappointing and the rear only adjustable suspension and the Capstone pricing. Yup I think I just talked myself out of the Capstone. How do you go from 18/23 nonhybrid to 19/22 hybrid? I really hope that's only for the capstone with those 22" wheels, but even then it doesn't make much sense. Something isn't right here.
10:45 I really enjoy having an auto-dimming mirror, which this one is, it's great for today's bright LEDs just like this truck has. How does that camera/screen rearview mirror work at night though? Wouldn't the camera just show a big bright ball of light instead of individual headlights from vehicles behind you?

Some missed opportunities here. No real bed / tailgate innovation, plus you lose the very useful storage under the rear seat, which if I'm not mistaken is not an issue in the F-150 Hybrid. But, of course, this truck will probably last 300k miles with few issues
The new tundra is a missed opportunity period. It has less space than before, payload is low, it’s kind of ugly up front, and no v8. The hybrid is nice but it doesn’t manage to outgun the benchmark trunk, the f150 hybrid

The tundra needed an update, but this truck will probably still be on the road 15 years from now compared to its competitors. I didn’t like the front end at first but it’s grown on me. Toyota in my opinion knocked this out of the park, I’ll be looking at getting one in a year or so

its a very nice truck but i agree im struggling to see the value over a platinum or 1794. it doesn't have the brand name either so a lot of ppl will think the platinum is the highest grade lol
Looks pretty chumpy to me. The term "luxury truck" gets batted around a lot, but it really just means "some more chrome and a bit better leather" on most models. This was a chance to change that ... and it didn't.
@@naveenthemachine I may have seen that review, but I kind of like the XSE....a little cheaper, a bit more sportier to me, but that's subjective. The price of SUVs and trucks are going through the roof. I certainly couldn't afford the Tundra Capstone, if I needed a pickup truck!
@@stevenwells5069 yeah. The XSE is now the cheapest way to get the torque vectoring AWD. Previous you had to get the limited trim to get it. That said I do like the red interior

That air suspension on such a big vehicle is going to put the owners in a world of hurt in 5-8 years. Hyundai tried to make air suspension reliable years ago and they gave up pretty quickly and not even Genesis has it now. And we all know how reliable European cars are with that suspension… 😒

If Lexus made nicer interiors , this Toyota wouldn't be in Lexus territory the top model F150s and Expeditions are nice but the Navigator is still notably nicer than either. This looks just as good if not better than the Lexus Lx600 smh

Cost cutting. Never seen a vehicle trying to be luxury or that is luxury use a hard plastic air bag cover which is a huge portion of the passenger side dash… bmw doesn’t do it. Audi doesn’t do it. Mercedes doesn’t do it. As far as luxury trucks ram doesn’t do it. Ford doesn’t do it. Chevy doesn’t do it. But it’s a Toyota so you’re lucky to get ANY leather on the dash.
I have had 3 Toyotas . 09 Tacoma Offroad , 13 5.7 tundra dbl cab, and now my current 2020 Tss Offroad 5.7 4x4. Unless I won the lottery there is absolutely no way I’d consider this for that price . As a diehard Toyota fan even I’m tired of the conservative thinking of mike sweers . When you only update once a decade or longer you must swing for the fence . 6.5 sec 0-60 WHAT!? . The goal should’ve been 5.5 even with factory ECU tuning. I could type an essay on things but I’m not . If I traded it’d be for a Limited TRD Offroad and nothing higher packaged . Especially not the hybrid . Almost zero benefit . Really more detractors for some in getting the hybrid instead of the non hybrid .
Avoiding reliability issues I’m guessing. I think they were confident putting this powertrain in because they’ve tested more extensively and im pretty sure a very similar powertrain is in the Lexus LS since 2017 or 18. On the other hand, if they cared about reliability, they would not have added air suspension.

That power side step in the back is the dumbest thing on the truck that will be the first thing to break if its actually used as a work truck backing up and hauling stuff. Should've been permanently built into the bumper like other trucks. Also, the white leather especially by the engine start button will get very dirty. Those 22' wheels won't fair too well on bumpy roads with potholes when carrying a heavy load or towing stuff. You need bigger sidewalls on the tires. This truck is mostly for show like the old Lincoln Blackwood. Just luxury! A little more usable but the regular Tundra is way better. I won't fuss about the oversized front grille like on the Avalon. Lol
currently driving a RCF and a F150 for the winter months. can’t wait until the TRD pro is available so I can snag one and go back to driving one vehicle. My biggest concern is where I spend all my time the interior and in my humble opinion they killed it. It’s stunning and will age gracefully. In 5-7 yrs when I’m bored of it and want something new I’ll trade it in and get 75% of what I paid for it. Let’s see a f150 do that (in a normal market, not the chip shortage market we are in).
Let’s be completely honest here though, most people with top of the line trucks don’t do heavy work with them. If that’s the case they’ll probably get the TRD with the 6.5 bed
@@christianflores6626 Does the TRD even offer a 6.5’ bed? I don’t think it does, which in that application makes sense since that’s an off-road oriented truck. Also, that is a good point you made. But the thing I see is every other truck (excluding the Titan, which nobody even buys that thing to begin with) offers the longer bed option on the top trims. I think if the 1794 offers the 6.5’ bed, it should be offered on the Capstone.

the battery packaging on the new tundra sucks, i get they went for the nickle hydride battery because of cost and recyclability but you loose all of you underseat storage as a result of that. it would have been better if they packaged it behind the seatbacks instead or went for a smaller frame mounter battery like the ford powerboost.
Wow, not much of a Hybrid - very weak. They have the technology to do a plug-in with a 200hp electric motor mated with a 300hp V6 - where you would get 40+ mpg. What are they waiting for?

6,000lb truck and it barely makes 400hp. Pretty sad. Luxury comes at a price and that price is speed and towing capacity. Nice truck but for 80k they could've put a bit more torque and horsepower under the hood.

I was a sales manager at a Lexus store in the early oughts. Some local wag had bought a bunch of Lexus badges and rebadged his Tundra, which led to a lot of guys coming in to see the new Lexus pickup like the one they had seen around town. I also had people come in to see the "new" Lexus they had seen in the Tom Cruise movie "Minority Report." Had to inform them that car would be out in 2054!

@@danielmeador1991 Well that first part I can’t determine whether it’s true or just BS, not only that but it’s rather moot whether people use it or not. That being said, if any other window goes out of whack in the vehicle, you’d have to go through the trouble dismantling the door panels just to get to the problem. It’ll be no different trying to fix the rear window.

I understand why Toyota didn’t go crazy with all the extras (pro power, weird tailgate, etc…) with all the complications they could cause. Toyota, and especially the Tundra has the best reliability reputation in the industry, so it only makes sense that all the extra stuff didn’t make it through the design.
And to add further to the pro power thing, Tundras are typically not a fleet truck / work truck in the same way the F-150 or GM vehicles are. Tundras are mainly for personal use or long-range driving (hot shot drivers in the oil industry). How many construction companies have you seen with a fleet of Tundra work trucks? Not to mention, they got rid of the work truck trim for this generation.
Only thing that disappointed me with the capstone is that they didn’t go all the way with the satin metal look - I wish they made everything finished in that matte silver finish. It’s weird to have the satin trip on the doors, grille, and bumpers, but the mirror caps and door handles are chrome? Just match it for gods sake!
I hope all the other Toyota vehicles get this nice update 👌🏽

The Sequoia Capstone already has a very similar interior. Expecting the Lexus GX to have a similar interior to this, because, IMO, this interior is better than both the 300 series Land Cruiser and LX 600.

3:06 I’ve never seen Ford offer a blackout package on their Platinum/Limited F150s. They offer trim levels where the grille and trim is black, but not a black out package. If anything Toyota is the one that offers that. The Toyota 4Runner Limited Nightshade comes to mind

I will still consider the Tundra Capstone or Premium still but...19/22 is extremely disappointing and the rear only adjustable suspension and the Capstone pricing. Yup I think I just talked myself out of the Capstone. How do you go from 18/23 nonhybrid to 19/22 hybrid? I really hope that's only for the capstone with those 22" wheels, but even then it doesn't make much sense. Something isn't right here.

10:45 I really enjoy having an auto-dimming mirror, which this one is, it's great for today's bright LEDs just like this truck has. How does that camera/screen rearview mirror work at night though? Wouldn't the camera just show a big bright ball of light instead of individual headlights from vehicles behind you?

Some missed opportunities here. No real bed / tailgate innovation, plus you lose the very useful storage under the rear seat, which if I'm not mistaken is not an issue in the F-150 Hybrid. But, of course, this truck will probably last 300k miles with few issues
Well, you can look for these upgrades in 15 years when they release the next model.
The new tundra is a missed opportunity period. It has less space than before, payload is low, it’s kind of ugly up front, and no v8. The hybrid is nice but it doesn’t manage to outgun the benchmark trunk, the f150 hybrid

The tundra needed an update, but this truck will probably still be on the road 15 years from now compared to its competitors. I didn’t like the front end at first but it’s grown on me. Toyota in my opinion knocked this out of the park, I’ll be looking at getting one in a year or so

its a very nice truck but i agree im struggling to see the value over a platinum or 1794. it doesn't have the brand name either so a lot of ppl will think the platinum is the highest grade lol
Looks pretty chumpy to me. The term "luxury truck" gets batted around a lot, but it really just means "some more chrome and a bit better leather" on most models. This was a chance to change that ... and it didn't.

That air suspension on such a big vehicle is going to put the owners in a world of hurt in 5-8 years. Hyundai tried to make air suspension reliable years ago and they gave up pretty quickly and not even Genesis has it now. And we all know how reliable European cars are with that suspension… 😒

If Lexus made nicer interiors , this Toyota wouldn't be in Lexus territory the top model F150s and Expeditions are nice but the Navigator is still notably nicer than either. This looks just as good if not better than the Lexus Lx600 smh
This interior is quite nice but most Lexus interiors (and Toyotas for that matter) are SO behind the competition, especially Hyundai and Mazda.

The Navigator's interior is worse than this though, IMO.
Cost cutting. Never seen a vehicle trying to be luxury or that is luxury use a hard plastic air bag cover which is a huge portion of the passenger side dash… bmw doesn’t do it. Audi doesn’t do it. Mercedes doesn’t do it. As far as luxury trucks ram doesn’t do it. Ford doesn’t do it. Chevy doesn’t do it. But it’s a Toyota so you’re lucky to get ANY leather on the dash.

I have had 3 Toyotas . 09 Tacoma Offroad , 13 5.7 tundra dbl cab, and now my current 2020 Tss Offroad 5.7 4x4.

When you only update once a decade or longer you must swing for the fence . 6.5 sec 0-60 WHAT!? . The goal should’ve been 5.5 even with factory ECU tuning.
I could type an essay on things but I’m not . If I traded it’d be for a Limited TRD Offroad and nothing higher packaged . Especially not the hybrid . Almost zero benefit . Really more detractors for some in getting the hybrid instead of the non hybrid .

Avoiding reliability issues I’m guessing. I think they were confident putting this powertrain in because they’ve tested more extensively and im pretty sure a very similar powertrain is in the Lexus LS since 2017 or 18. On the other hand, if they cared about reliability, they would not have added air suspension.

That power side step in the back is the dumbest thing on the truck that will be the first thing to break if its actually used as a work truck backing up and hauling stuff. Should've been permanently built into the bumper like other trucks. Also, the white leather especially by the engine start button will get very dirty. Those 22' wheels won't fair too well on bumpy roads with potholes when carrying a heavy load or towing stuff. You need bigger sidewalls on the tires. This truck is mostly for show like the old Lincoln Blackwood. Just luxury! A little more usable but the regular Tundra is way better. I won't fuss about the oversized front grille like on the Avalon. Lol
The competition ford and gm have had that for the past 6 years
currently driving a RCF and a F150 for the winter months. can’t wait until the TRD pro is available so I can snag one and go back to driving one vehicle. My biggest concern is where I spend all my time the interior and in my humble opinion they killed it. It’s stunning and will age gracefully. In 5-7 yrs when I’m bored of it and want something new I’ll trade it in and get 75% of what I paid for it. Let’s see a f150 do that (in a normal market, not the chip shortage market we are in).
What were they thinking? No 6.5’ bed on the capstone?! That’s going to alienate some buyers… what a shame.
Let’s be completely honest here though, most people with top of the line trucks don’t do heavy work with them. If that’s the case they’ll probably get the TRD with the 6.5 bed
@@christianflores6626 Does the TRD even offer a 6.5’ bed? I don’t think it does, which in that application makes sense since that’s an off-road oriented truck. Also, that is a good point you made. But the thing I see is every other truck (excluding the Titan, which nobody even buys that thing to begin with) offers the longer bed option on the top trims. I think if the 1794 offers the 6.5’ bed, it should be offered on the Capstone.

the battery packaging on the new tundra sucks, i get they went for the nickle hydride battery because of cost and recyclability but you loose all of you underseat storage as a result of that. it would have been better if they packaged it behind the seatbacks instead or went for a smaller frame mounter battery like the ford powerboost.
Why does 0-60 mean anything for a truck🤔. The size of the truck and the use of the truck would be more informative than speed. It's not a sports car.
Wow, not much of a Hybrid - very weak. They have the technology to do a plug-in with a 200hp electric motor mated with a 300hp V6 - where you would get 40+ mpg. What are they waiting for?

6,000lb truck and it barely makes 400hp. Pretty sad.
Luxury comes at a price and that price is speed and towing capacity. Nice truck but for 80k they could've put a bit more torque and horsepower under the hood.
