2024 Toyota Tundra Platinum Review | Is The Hybrid Worth It?

- The Tundra's optional hybrid system is suspiciously similar in design to Ford's F-150 Powerboost system... But without the on-board generator function that has made the F-150 hybrid such a big seller in the USA. Which is right for you?

This is one of the first videos Nick ever recorded, so be kind :)
Who is Alex again? Great work, Nick!
He is so handsome
I wondered where Nick went... Glad to see him again! 🤪
Is this the same Nick that was with DSTV? I recognize the voice!
Nick always does excellent work, just saying.
Helpful review. Thanks. There does not seem to be much upside to the hybrid except the add'l 48 HP. Why wouldn't you go with 6cyl turbo and gain back the storage under seats that is lost with battery?
No matter the negative comments about this vehicle .. Toyota continues to be the best car company because she knows how to solve customer issues better than the rest. I drove and owned almost all the luxury cars and the toyota continues to be my best.I will stick with them on this one as well
Fun tidbit: the Tundra currently is on its way to having its biggest sales year since 2007.
indeed

Can't fix ignorant... Most people that buy a car have no idea what they are spending 50k plus on.
@@Wised1000 I am one of those but i can afford it ..dont know what percentage of buyers are like me..just get paid higher and worry less about spending.
I Bought A 2024 Tundra Limited TRD Off Road iForce Max And Don’t Regret It. Other Than The Cost My Only Gripe Is The JBL Premium Audio. Premium To What? I Think It Handles Great, Brakes Great etc… Great Review Of The Platinum
Toyota needs to add:
1) a 8kW inverter similar to the F150 hybrid
2) auto 4WD mode
Even a 2.4kw inverter would be pretty awesome to have, and shame that other Toyota hybrid models are getting it with no mention of the Tundra.
Won’t ever happen.😂 the tundra is in its final gen. They will discontinue this at some point because the competition has ignored its existence
They would add another $20K to the MSRP for adding those 2 options.
Just bring back engines that last forever.
@@jjpark1989$20k? 🤣 $3k perhaps.
You did a great job on the video. In fact you touched on some things I haven’t seen in other peoples videos. I don’t think I’ve seen another Platinum with the TRD package video. I didn’t know about some of the features that added until I watched this video. Keep up the good work!
Will it qualify for the engine replacement recall Toyota issued?
Only the non-hybrids have been recalled so far
Good review. I left F150 Limited to go into 24 1794 Tundra. Style, price, ride all were very good. Just nervous about the turbo v 6 engine in the 24 Tundra... I do find the braking is stiffer then in the F 150 Limited.
Did the engine blow up when the camera stopped filming?
Wow, I don't know how many takes or rehearsals you did Nick, but great job!
I do like to hear personal insights or comparisons from other experience. I understand you may not have that for all vehicle types. But when you can, please do!
Great review. You need to come up with a unique adjective like Alex such as logically or logical, hahaha. Well done. You come off as well researched and a knowledgeable reviewer. Great job for you first review. Your tone and voice kept me interested and you didn't make me bored at all. A fair review overall.
I hate the black fender flares. Makes the wheel gap look huge.
@@rblbatb it’s a truck, people like that on trucks
Its the tiny tires that make the gap look huge.
Artificial engine sound should always be defeatable.
That I never understood; if I don’t have a good sounding engine, I’d rather have a quieter cab or noise cancellation than adding fake engine sounds. I can just use my phone to play dragster sounds over the radio if that’s what I really wanted.
Great job Nick.
My Lexus has a volume knob for the fake engine noise. Why they force you to add sound on the Tundra is stupid-just to sell the truck.
It can be disabled through ODB2.
Still driving a 1st gen. I’m priced out of the 3rd gen…
Hard to believe Ford makes a better motor for their pickup 5.0L
When mentioning height also indicate your pant's inseam measurement. I'm that same 6'1" height but I'm all legs so I might have headroom in the back but not legroom yet I don't know if you just state total height.
That is a good suggestion, just for your reference inseam is 32"
-Nick
😂
I'm 36" so I never have to worry about headroom, but legroom, that's almost always a problem.
Nick does such a good job here!
From size if Ridgeline to this, but need f1350 and f450 competition
It’s a more limited market, not worth the investment for the limited sales return. If the Tundra had an equal market share to the big three, then it starts to make more sense.
Nissan attempted the HD market, and had a great truck, but still crashed and burned because they didn’t have enough market share to sell enough to turn a profit on them.
Video seemed out of focus when the engine specs were listed (@5:10), jittery camera for the outside shots due to wind, and sometimes interrupted flow of speech. Otherwise good video for the first review :)
What a world we live in now. 70k for a Toyota truck
just like the other full size trucks 🤷🏽♂️
@@jermainec2462But this isn't a "Real" truck 😢..💩
But the trucks quality is poor. Worse than Tesla tbh
@@naveenthemachineResale values beg to differ and outsells domestic truck brands
@@thechosenone2786 but the f150 outsells the tundra by an absolute mile. And with the reliability problems the resale value is a thing of the past
$70k for any Toyota is a hard pass, especially one with a self destructing engine 😂
Compared to my Ram 1500 Rebel this truck takes a massive nose dive in the storage department. No side pockets on either side of the center console which every other large pick up has . I’m all for the hybrid but come on Toyota . ?? No storage under the seats ? Are you kidding me ? The Ram has under seat storage and massive hidden compartments in the floor to put stuff away .Also Ram boxes to boot . Also the engine recall leaves a lot to be desired .
I have one and am looking at my underseat storage...its only the Hybrids that have no storage under seats...RAM box takes away from the bed so “to each their own.”
Great job Nick!
The Tundra is not a consideration for me as its price is too breathtaking and the fuel economy needs to be twice as good as it is.
I wish that vehicles nowadays would focus more on value and utility and less on power and bling --- do we need the massive acceleration and hill climbing ability for everyday use? Could we live without frills such as an electronic rear view mirror? Could cloth seats be as practical as ventilated and heated seats? Could manual roll up windows suffice? Could a simpler 4x4 system with old-fashioned locking hubs be substituted? Maybe I'm being hypercritical but growing up in the 1960s, many of the features found on the Tundra were either not available or were extra cost even for a Caddie, much less in a pick up.
You're watching a review of a Plantinum trim but you're an SR trim customer by the sounds of it.
“Grand Tacoma”
Off road suspensions are softer not firmer.
Wow! For $82k Toyota decided to throw in some metal shavings in the engine. 🫤
No, get a Ford with an ecoboost. My Expedition got better mpg than the hybrid Sequoia. How can you make a hybrid get worse mileage than a gamer?
They will replace the engine after this review
Who buys a truck for gas mileage….
Fleets that are calculating fuel costs in relation to profits.
Great video 👍
V8 fuel economy at Hybrid price? Sign me up… to keep buying v8s!
The Tundra with v8 got horrible mpg!
Nick, Let's face it, for a humongous, 3 ton pickup with a tiny bed, the rear seat space 7:50 is PATHETIC! Just because Toyota's 5'5" Chairman fits, does not mean it is good enough
for the rest of us. 🤨
The middle seat in all trucks had this issue until they started eliminating that hump from the transmission.
It’s very similar to all the other pickup trucks
You can get one with a 6.5' bed and the crew cab
The new generation looks too "edgy", like it was designed by a tennis shoe designer. Whatever happend to the idea that a truck is for "work"? My truck is a 2018 Tundra SR5 4x4 5.7 V8. Not fancy, and looks fine with dirt on it and I wash it a couple of times each year whether it needs it or not. The color is called "concrete". Love it, bought it new for $40K nicely equipped. Guess those days are long gone.
Overall the video is in good quality, kudos to Nick!
One feedback though, is that the interior part is a bit shaky. You may consider some stabilizer to hold the camera : ))
Appreciate the feedback, ill look to improve on my shakiness next time around
-Nick
Truck looks great, one problem tho, Ford makes a solid f150. If anybody did an in depth review on the engine, you'd see how thin the sidewalls are, and the main bearing caps are dinky. Sure the hybrids dont have issues now, but trust me, they will. Tundra deserves all the crap they eat. Half tons are heavy duty money, you're better off buying an hd. My 23 cummims limited gets the same milage and its a 6.7 😅
Toyota messed up with not continuing the 8 cylinder as an option and never including the Toyota diesel engine too!
Thank ever tightening government regulations. This is why all manufacturers moving to smaller displacement turbo engines. Yes some manufacturers keep NA engines but they're becoming more rare. Ford sells a lot more trucks in this segment and able to offer more powertrain options.
What is the point of this truck's hybrid system if it only gives you two more MPG in the city and one less on the highway compared to the non-hybrid version. All that additional money and weight and loss of under rear seat storage for hardly any additional fuel economy in the city and an actual deficit on the highway. Why would anybody get this truck with the hybrid system? Also, I hope you don't have to pay extra for that paint color, it looks like primer that got shot with a layer of clear coat.
It’s a parallel hybrid not implemented for efficiency like in say a Prius but for power, hence the higher horsepower and torque figures. Similar to ford’s hybrid in their f series, upcoming Ram hybrid system etc
Also lowers emissions compared to previous engines
Towing. The hybrid’s advantage is towing.
What’s the point of a N\A V8, if it gets worse gas mileage than a N\A V6? Why would anyone buy a V8?
I felt no difference in performance with hybrid vs the reg twin turbo. Except a 3400 price increase to say you went "green" . Its more like you lost some green on that scam.
Toyota new v6 with twin turbos having over 100k recall of engine problems. Buyer beware 🙏
Oh I love the "bump to open" tailgate; I think I'd prefer that on hatchbacks over the "do a dance" or "stand here with the key".
yall some real Debbie downers in the comment section. Hell, at least they decided to fix the recall instead of playing its normal or ignoring the issue... ( Ford GM )
I’d rather stick with a company that doesn’t make defective engine, like Nissan. I prefer driving my truck, not leaving it in the garage or service center.
Absolutely! Given the normal engine one is getting all the engines recalled and replaced! 120k engines swapped! Their won't be any of the non hybrid ones available for a while. Itried A tundra a few years ago when I bought a truck, it sucked compared to the F150 ecoboost. It was slow, torpid, and had a rough ride. Now it turns out they had bum engines too. Need a full size truck? Buy real american. Better yet, get an electric one! If you don't tow far often, the Lightning is better than the Tundra in all parameters.
What is real American?
@@tbone9405
A company where the profits of the sale stay in the US instead of going to another country.....
Just to be clear, Ford has offshore holding entities to keep profits outside the US and avoid losing any of it to the government. All big corporations and millionaires do, which is a big reason why the US has budget issues even though it is the largest economy in the world.
Never side with a corporation because you think they are on your side; they will always break your heart.
@@Wised1000 oh you mean like Ram, Dodge, Chrysler?
@tbone9405
In fact, those are Stellantis an international conglomerate.
Thought you were going to teach me something didn't you?
It’s a shame about the massive engine recall for Toyota. Hope between Toyota and its parts suppliers and certified mechanics can collectively sort it out quickly. It’s good for the industry overall to have more power train options available to consumers provided the auto parts and repair industry can keep up with sudden changes in the landscape.
Not with v8 gas mileage and an engine so unreliable it's being replaced in a hundred thousand trucks
I feel like they are able to make a much more efficient version of this able to reach like 24 plus miles per gallon on road .
Don't buy either!
I wouldn't buy a tundra at the moment. Wait till yota figures our all the bullshit going on
Such a terrible truck and im a toyota fan. Id get the previous gen over any current 1500 truck. Titan Pro4X lookin kinda nice too. The refresh of this truck cant come soon enough

As I’ve said all over the internet, the tundra is a complete mess. We waited 15 years for a redesign and Toyota would have to do a lot. What we got is we’ve been cheated. Theres nothing it does well vs rivals. Nothing. It was dead on arrival when it was unveiled. The competition will ignore this already ran truck. It came too late yet it’s so far behind the competition.
There’s no point in acknowledging that it even exists
If anything it seems like folks are ignoring the competition to get a Tundra since in recent news other brands are being traded in for a Tundra vs the opposite, and the Tundra is in its way to breaking sales records in the year since 2007
@@chibbyylolthose folks are just stuck in overhype mode where the tundras super hot to them but reality shows the complete opposite
No, it’s not worth it. Look for the previous generation a couple years old with the lowest possible miles.
With everything people say about the last generation’s reliability and longevity is it really that important to find one with the lowest possible miles?
@@ALMX5DPthe reliability problems of the old v8 were decades ago
