  • I am not who you think I am - looking back on four years of growth
The "CottageFairy" who started this channel is verrrry different from the "CottageFairy" who is here now, and I think that's a very good thing! I was not able to apply the ideals I wanted when I started this channel, I only knew how to chat about it online and yet unable to really apply it. Now, I am happy to say I'm the person I've wanted to be, and I think it's because youtube - in some ways - has raked me over the coals and really forced me to change in order to recover from severe anxiety and learn how to take care of myself (and be my friend instead of my worst critic).

I quit a well paying job, sold my home, and moved to the mountains to a rural town. I was told by friends and family that I would hate it. However, I have found my little piece of paradise. I don't make a lot of money anymore, but enough to be comfortable and pay my bills.
I am content and have found peace.

So well-said Paola! I am 67 yo & spent most of my adult life doing what I thought everyone wanted me to do. Trying to please everybody but myself. My goal in life was to retire and only THEN would I be happy & have time for myself. Well it backfired in a huge way when my husband died suddenly on his way to work of a blood clot. We were a year away from retirement. It’s been a very very difficult lesson. I commend you for taking the time & energy to recognize this in yourself sooner rather than later as well as to help others understand the importance of self-care and living life to the fullest every single day. Thank you. ❤

I am so sorry for your loss. I am 62 and just had a heart attack July 6th from complications of long covid..It made me realize that I was taking every day just a little bit for granted. I told myself I would never do that again after almost dying from covid. And once before when I almost died of a post surgical infection. I suppose it is human nature to forget how we felt when we decided to live life to the fullest. We are not promised that we will wake up tomorrow and so we should embrace every moment.

Imo your early “Cottage Fairy” videos were, for many, pure therapy that was balm to the souls of people who needed a temporary escape - a respite - from stress. The visual beauty of those videos, the skillful way the shifting scenes were woven together, combined with the calming music and your gentle-sounding narration, apparently created, for some viewers, an illusion of perfection that of course could not be sustained in an imperfect world! But you helped so many people find respite from anxiety in dark times, respite that hopefully refreshed their spirits, making them a little bit stronger and enabling them to cope - if only by thinking back to a scene of wind passing over a field of flowers, or a dog frolicking in tall grass, or a steaming cup of tea made from roses, or a leaf being carefully painted in gold on chocolate. Really, the artistry of those videos is remarkable, and something of which you - and your collaborators if any - should forever be proud. I’m not sure, but I suspect that you may actually have started the “slow living” movement that seems to have been gathering steam on RUclips for a while - and that is a wonderful thing, imo! But nobody has captured the dream, if only in brief increments (as it must be), like The Cottage Fairy.

To anyone who is having one of those "bad moments" Paola mentions in this video...
You are not alone. Millions of others are also having a bad moment right along with you. We do such a great job of covering it up and plastering a fake smile on our faces that it's hard to see. But you are not alone. You are not alone in your struggle, you are not alone in the pain of growing, you are not alone on this journey of learning to let go and just be.

I found your channel in the summer of 2020; I had just lost my mom and turned to RUclips for escape. I was completely distraught and didn't think I would ever recover from that loss. RUclips kept recommending your channel, but I declined, every time... until you posted a video about dyeing fabric with plants. I watched that video, subscribed immediately and proceeded to watch all you had posted.
I lost both my dad and brother last month and I am just numb. Your videos are a source of comfort for me, and I wanted to thank you for all you have done here. You have helped me in ways I can't really convey. 🌻

This is such an important thing to talk about. We are not the same person that we were years ago, not even a year ago. I myself have gone through so much growth, particularly since 2020 which is when I finally had the time to stop, slow down, and really think about my life, who I was, and who I wanted to be. I also was able to process a lot of trauma that I had been pushing away for many years. In those last three years, I've gone through so many huge life experiences, I've moved countries three times, changed my artistic style, I've gained many new passions and left some behind. Even my spirituality, beliefs, and the way I view the world and life has changed quite drastically. The things I wanted for myself three years ago no longer apply to to me now. It's can be a scary thought, but also a very comforting one as well. Change is inevitable and you only get wiser with years (hopefully haha).
I look forward to seeing who I am and what I will have created and experienced in 5 years time. I know that my life will look nothing like it does now and that's a great comfort to me.
Wishing you the best! Thank you for another lovely video, Paola! ❤

“I’m glad my life fell apart…” This seems like something one would never say, but it’s as true for me as it was for you. I pushed myself so far in the wrong directions, that my mind and body finally just forced me to stop. I followed an old Stoic experiment where you simply imagine you died (the thing that’s so terrifying when you’re sick) and then wake up and say to yourself that now you can start your next life and be whatever you want to be. Like a butterfly! It’s such hard work, as you say, but when you’re moving in the direction your soul is pointing, doing the hard thing feels more rewarding. Thank you for your insight and honesty. I truly believe our whole country is going through this change in one way or another, maybe leading us all to a better sense of community.

I recently had a disappointment that I found myself hurt and angry over - a terrible combination of feelings. I was getting close to having panic attacks, I was so upset, so confused. However, although I am still struggling with this particular loss, I also know that losing this opportunity might not be such a bad thing over all. I am going to let it go and try to see the positive side of it not working out. There are other opportunities, and I believe that my strengths actually lie in other areas. So I am working on this mindset, moving forward, and to not let it damage my self esteem.

As a christian I gave my anxiety to God. In my life I am so different than the scared woman in my 20's, 30's and up. It took a lot of reflection and healing from trauma. I think you are a lovely young woman who makes the world better with your videos. I leave you with a cherished bible verse. Jesus said :
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27.. Blessings and safe travels 🙏🏻❤️

Paila,I never comment on RUclips, but I felt I had to today.
I am a teacher and had a breakdown in 2021. I had so much anxiety, and I became physically ill from all the stress I was putting myself through.
I have always been a perfectionist and pushed myself so much.
I quit my job and felt lost because my whole identity was being a teacher. My whole life revolved around it.
October 16th, 2023, will be my two years of a slower paced life and homeschooling my two boys.
I can't tell you how much your channel and your voice have helped me in these two years...
You inspired me to create again... I am painting again, something I didn't do in 10 years, and I am making time for myself. I see the beauty in everyday little moments again, and I am taking better care of my body. Exercising and making healthy meals... your voice is so calming, and after every video, I feel more insired. I am sitting here with my needle and thread repairing some clothes (also insired by a previous video).
Thank you so much for being so honest, so inspiring, and all the hard work that you are putting into these videos. Sometimes, I wish I had your wisdom when I was your age, but it's never too late for change.♡

The genuine raw beauty of this message takes an incredible amount of courage and strength. And not just to voice it, and to post it. But she had to watch these segments and listen to this emotionally authentic moment over and over again during the editing process. And still, after all of that, had the bravery and grit to share with us. You always inspire your community, Paola, but this is SERVING them and everyone who comes across this video. THIS is legacy.

I think you’ve made it pretty clear that these videos are art. Stories. Some acting and only showing the peaceful parts of your life. A bit staged to fit the story each week. Not all the real mess. So in that sense, I would never assume I know who you are. That would require to hang out with you for real. I think people on RUclips are so quick to think we know someone. You are a wonderful story teller. And that is good enough for me to know to feel close to this channel. And you. You’ve been a great gift to me. Finding you a few years ago. You helped me when I could barely function. I had no peace. And through your videos I found myself again. And that is worth more than I can articulate here. ❤. But we don’t know you so why anyone would assume you are perfect is a bit odd to me.
Some RUclipsrs share every aspect of their daily life. Whereas you made it clear you don’t show it all. I respect that a lot. This channel is your art. And it’s very moving indeed to be apart of. So thank you once again.
    Hugs to you. ❤

And sharing such beautiful and calm videos in general, watching them calms my nerves. ❤

Paola, I am so grateful for your sharings and your channel. I'm a holistic therapist working with many burnt out ladies, this has also been me too. Through you I have made some big life changes, I have started mindful colouring and sitting more in nature rather than striding through on my walks, I have also moved my therapy business home and work from my cabin in the garden, I am now putting together a whimsical winter retreat for women with felting, and other crafts. You have had such an impact on my life and I am now taking this and sharing within my community. Thank you so much x

Learning to live in the 'now' moment is very difficult. We are so conditioned as we grow up to always be striving for bigger and better things in the future that we lose complete focus on the 'now' moment and the gifts and joy it has for us. There's so much in what you've said that I relate to deeply! It makes me realize that although the struggle is centred in ourselves, I think it comes from being a person who truly believes in goodness and wants to lead a life that is helpful to others, while living in a cultural system that is utterly unbalanced and has no limit to what it demands from its members. I appreciate the honesty and wisdom you offer, Paoula, and I'm glad if it has helped you to cultivate this channel as much as it helps so many of us. ❤️

Paola, you are exactly the person I think you are: a very brave, intelligent, wise and caring woman who has shared her struggles, as well as her triumphs, with her many followers. It takes tremendous courage to bare your soul to others and to go out on a limb to radically change your life, your very being! But in doing so, I believe with all my heart that you have helped many who share some of the same challenges that you have experienced. The beauty of life is the ability to change it by being brave enough and willing enough to seek that change from within. You have demonstrated that this is possible. Thank you, God bless, and safe travels!

We moved to the country and to a town where we know no one, we aren’t even sure how we ended up here….but…we do now know that there is a great awakening of humanity happening across the globe. We see darkness all around us in our world but this has to be so the light and the awakening can happen…many of us are or have gone through what you describe here…we are all physically and spiritually ascending ❤

Oh my goodness, did I need this video! I feel like I'm beginning this lifestyle process. I've had a horrible anxiety disorder since I was 7, I'm 22 now. I don't know how to live without anxiety, I'm always operating at a base level of anxiety. My anxiety these past couple months has been increasingly awful and it gets triggered very easily. It's been miserable. I can feel this is my biggest challenge and I want to change it. My anxiety comes from an abusive childhood and neglect. I've been Journaling on my anxiety and trying to understand why it's a part of me. I also feel the need to control everything, my hair, my makeup, clothes, how I spend my time. I have a self made noose on me from this and I have the biggest desire to break free. I believe this is a big lesson in learning to trust the universe, having faith and trusting myself to make the right decision. This video gave me a lot of peace and hope that things will get better. Thank you so much for your honesty and humility. It gives me courage to keep moving forward.

This was one of your most heart-touching videos (and you've had a lot). I have fond memories dancing in my mind of your old cottage... making tea... cooking wholesome meals... reading fairy tales by candlelight. I'm in a period of recovery from past hurts and pains, as well, and struggle with being "still," "silent," and "alone." Like you mention here, I still revert to old bad habits. In this video, you inspire us all to keep pressing forward, even through the pain and discomfort, until we find the light on the other side. Your work isn't just glorious artistry; it's also a healing tool for all your kindred spirits out there.

Yes, its all been managed and well thought out by someone. Your little Bunny shouts gentleness, your little dog a sense of humor, your husband caring and loving companion. I lost my beloved Labrador Domino last year (26th August) in a rather traumatic way. It’s completely broken me. The first six months were a complete blur, the last two weeks running up to the anniversary were awful. But that is the grief journey & where there was deep love there will be equally deep grief.
The loss of Domino has totally changed me, such as my identity; who am I now without him? I’m being forced to strip of my old identity. He was my constant companion.
