I am an 80 year old man and live alone. I am a 2 time loser in the marriage game and, most certainly, there will never a third. Not at my age. I get out as necessary to keep my home provisioned. I have a truly excellent library of books that I love to read, most more than once over time. If I don't interface with shop keepers I would never need to talk to a soul. That would be most satisfactory in my mind. I simply don't get lonely. Lucky me.

This video came to me at the perfect moment. As a very contented and peaceful introvert, I am honestly never bored probably because I am a voracious reader and also have many hobbies and interests, but I do occasionally find myself fighting off feelings of guilt because I shy away from many of the situations that are prized in our very extroverted society. I think “is there something wrong with me?” even as I know I have no intention of changing myself even if I could. Thank you for the reminder that the way I choose to live my life is every bit as valid as the extrovert who lives a much more outer directed life. Boring? No, I have a rich interior life, a small number of close friends, and thanks to your videos, I have the contentment of knowing others who share my way of living.

      You sound like me.
I found everything so fascinating in my junior college that I ended up spending 4 years there instead of just the required 2 years. I took almost every class in the course catalog except for business and nurse classes. In fact, at one point, my advisor didn't know what to advise me to take anymore. I left with an Associates degree despite being there for 4 years because that's all they had to offer.
I left college for a while, and returned when my junior college became a full 4 year institution. I decided to make use of all that varied knowledge I'd collected and got my Bachelors degree in Education. So I became an elementary school teacher.
And all that stuff I learned because of my insatiable curiosity was very useful.

After having filled my life with business and the nervous talk we introverts do when we are anxious, I am finally getting back to my core self. I’ve lost my mother this year and it’s taught me to stop wasting my time pretending to be what I am not. If others find me boring so be it. I’ll take my walks and live in my head. It’s so difficult to reestablish the habits of reading and quietness I used to have before life and kids happened but I’m trying.

Imagine everything I ever read about alive and waiting and just there for the loving. I now live in Wisconsin. Not quite woodland which I prefer. My house is on more of a prairie setting. I find cities really hard to be in. I need quiet natural spaces to breathe. To find that earlier than my 61 years seems like such a blessing. Enjoy it thoroughly. Being an introvert in a family of extroverts, I spent most of my life developing a more "acceptable" way of myself. I was past 60 before I began to accumulate those buried parts in order to simply BE... as me! My faith & my prayer time speaking into the tender ear of a listening Savior have been my constant throughout... the stirrings from nature, Mozart, journaling, and morning sunshine greeting me consistently over decades... these have been the tangibles that have kept me attached to my true self, even in the busiest of professional seasons, & even amidst the struggles of single motherhood within that busy-ness. Over those years, I often heard myself saying that I LONGED to be bored... even if for just a day or for a string of hours! Paola, as you here, substitute "gentleness" in place of boredom... it makes so much sense to me! Thank you for the quietness in your voice & the poem of nature that you depict and share so profoundly in photographs, video, and in your watercolor creations. You are kind. And I am so grateful for that kindness.

I've lived abroad a long time in a country with a milder climate where the seasons are not that distinct and it did not work well for me. Now I'm in my own country, outside is a beautiful colorful crispy cool autumn with the forests bursting from wild berries and mushrooms, winter is coming (snow expected any time now!) and I'm thriving. Summer is my least favorite season and if I'd live in a place with eternal summer I'd go insane. 😆 I do love tropical fruit tho lol but can't have it all, can we. 😁

I once lived in a very rural area. We did not have a wood rat. (That I know of). But I noticed that my Brillo soap pads seemed to be disappearing from their spot under my sink. Then one day I discovered a very elaborate nest in the attic. It was made of brillo pads and decorated with faux poinsettias and other baubles from the boxed Christmas decorations.... I am also an introvert but I have never experienced boredom. It did take me some time, however, to acknowledge that solitude and serenity are a necessity for me. It is easier now that I am widowed and retired. Thank you for your videos. Stay free, friend.

Love this wonderland of a beautiful life. I enjoy watching you and yes I am an introvert and spend time alone when my husband and daughter leave for work. I’m retired and while they are away at jobs I’m alone for a number of hours. I am busy painting and writing and I take long walks. I am never bored. I live a rich interior life that keeps me company all the time. As I’m growing older I find that I’m happier. I have raised my family and now I am raising myself. Learning more about me everyday. It’s all good.

Paola, you have such a rich and full life! I know it wasn't always that way for you, which makes achieving it all the more precious. This week's video has caused me to contemplate "activity"... in the context of leading an "active" life, as opposed to a "boring" one. In this day and age, physical fitness is encouraged so strongly for one's health that it becomes an obsession for some. We must keep in mind that mental activity is just as important as physical activity. In our society, being physically active (ie: "sporty") is so often valued more than being mentally active (ie: introverted, bookish). Hopefully, we can each strive for a mixture of the two that best suits our own mental and physical health. 🙂

You know, you really are one of the most gentle, beautiful, creative souls i have EVER encountered and I am so very grateful for your loving gentle simplicity in all ways, including your manner and way of speaking, and I appreciate your naturalness, softness and your recipies, your artwork, and all the other wonderful things you do, I can only wish toendeavour to emulate you. I'm in a rapid state of change right now, all is rather chaotic dramatic and frenetic at times, being a fellow introvert, I have to say, all I want is a peace filled, natural, quiet, creative and fufilling life. I would so adore living deep in nature as you do. I used to, but when my husband died, I was thrust, by dint of circustances to living in towns. Renting. I have lived a rather nomadic existence since my husband died, moving so many many times,as I lost my compass and my anchor - but I am inntentionally settling down, and I pray I may be blessed by ahcieving the kind of magical, gentle, peaceful, serene and creative life your have made for yourself. I do send you so much love and gratitude, from Scotland x And, thank you for being. I so appreciate YOU.

I don't consider this boring. It is relaxing, enriching, nature is my refreshment. I love that my 1 year old son loves nature just like me ❤. The way he points to birds and says "what that?!," the way he follows every little bug, and the way he looks at the rain, melts my heart. I would choose being in nature with my son over anything, any day.

When I was a teenager I rescued four mortally ill piglets . When they got bigger we fixed up an old shed with a tin roof behind the house . We loved the pigs and they had a nest room full of hay , a room where they ate warm mash three times a day and a shaded yard . When fall came a racoon, two rats and an ermine all moved into the little shed too . Eventually the racoon would eat out of the pigs trough. They all stayed there all winter long . It's one of the happiest memories of my life .
Your little rat reminded me of it . ❤

I moved to a house within the grounds of a remote farm in Wales. literally living my dream after watching so many of your videos. I'm alone but not lonely(husband still in london..for now). this morning I sat outside on my bench in the freezing cold drinking a cup if tea, loving every minute of it listening to the birds. I do miss the convenience of a corner shop( I have to ride over hills to get milk) and going to the cinema once a week but when I go down to London I make more of a effort to see family and friends and do new things. I know we made the right decision. I don't think about how I look..I live in wellies, timberlands and dungarees.Theres no pressure to buy new clothes or change my hair (I braid my own hair now thanks to RUclips) . the farm animals, including a blind dog, are my new friends and I don't have feed or walk them. I'm content and never bored. plus I just found an apple tree on the grounds so I'll be making your treat soon. xx paola

  • @jimgilbert9984
    @jimgilbert9984 Год назад +4

    A matter of perspective, indeed.
I was forced to retire a few years back. I told concerned colleagues that it was okay, that I'd be fine, that I had a LOT of reading to catch up on, and all of that free time would give me the time I needed to concentrate on my writing. And it has done that.
Despite being teachers, people who are supposed to promote reading, my colleagues didn't really understand how someone could devote a whole afternoon, much less a whole day, to reading. It was rather frustrating for me to have all of these books I'd collected (alright, not collected, hoarded, if I'm being perfectly honest), and not had the time to sit down and just read, all because of the mountains of teachers have to do every, single day, often including on the weekends. They thought reading was boring.
My hope is that I inspired my students to discover the simple joys of reading.
As for writing, they knew that I was an author, and that I'd gotten great reviews for my first two books (published as ebooks), and that the first one even won an award. But to spend a lot of time each day writing? Surely there must be something wrong with Mr. Gilbert if he wants to do that.
    Hah!
They just don't get that I have a passion for writing. Before I retired, I'd written 3 novels, and they took me years to write. Now that I have the time, I've written a nonfiction book (that one took a while because of the illustrations), another novel, and I just finished Chapter 17 on my latest novel (writing one and a half chapters this afternoon and evening). I've got so very many stories inside me just bursting to get out and put into books.
And when I'm not reading and writing, I'm communing with nature.
Granted, I don't have a valley retreat to live in, but I've got a nice yard, a creek behind my place, a couple if parks within 5 minutes driving time, and a lot of green space around whenever I want to explore - rolling hills, mountains, fields, farms, and creeks and rivers and lakes, oh, my!
Even for city bound folks, there's a bit of nature to be found all around - a sturdy weed pushing itself up through a crack in the sidewalk, trees reaching for the sky from their sidewalk base, flowers planted along a windowsill, squirrels and chipmunks living in those trees, a patch of grass in an empty lot, a park in the middle of the city, birds singing to greet the morning sun, etc.
Everyone can enjoy a little "boredom" if they just slow down, take a breath, and do something slow and easy and enjoyable in order to step out of the so-called rat race, even if only for an hour or two every weekend.
