This is probably a video that Pella Window Company may not want you to watch. This video will show you what you can do to see if your Pella Proline Windows have hidden deterioration. If you have Pella Proline windows and you are still within your warranty period, you may be entitled to receive new windows. If you are within or past your warranty period, you may be entitled to sign up for the class-action lawsuit or even file your own lawsuit.
It began in late 80's when Anderson Window Company introduced a Vinyl Clad Casement Sill Wood Core window. Unfortunately, this particular window had some exterior exposed wood on the lower sill that permitted water entry into the window sill vinyl casing resulting in wood core deterioration. On this particular home, you can see how easily one can push a shiskabob stick through the base of one of these Anderson window sills. Anderson was smart and quit making these windows. Pella on the other hand did not follow the same path.
In the late 90's, Pella introduced the Aluminum Clad window under the PROLINE name. This was a mixed media window with an aluminum exterior covering. Unfortunately, this window design had some disastrous results due to water entering and becoming trapped within the wood frame. This deterioration usually occurs after the Pella 10 year warranty period. What I have found to work was simply spraying window washing liquid onto the window. The window cleaning liquid runs down the window and if the aluminum clad glass seal is broken, failed or delaminated, the fluid enters into, and gets behind the metal cladding where it becomes trapped. The sun cooks this trapped water and the window rots from the inside out. If this window cladding seal is still good, the water beads down and out, instead of down and in.
Fourteen years later, Pella still sends out these same or similar designed windows as replacements, except some like the sliding doors now have a bead of caulk. If the window beads the water down and out and away, you have a good chance that the window frame is still good. If the window is good, you should clean all the windows and all the frames. Wait for a coupled of hot days so the window interior wood dries up and then apply a good brand or white caulking. Don't use clear caulk because it will get dirty and look bad after a couple of weeks.
If you do find bad windows and you are still within your warranty time limit, call Pella immediately. It has been my personal experience that the Pella's response time is not that great. It took Pella two months before they came to evaluate my complaint on an 8 year old rotted window. Then it took Pella 2 more months to come to the home and make repairs. Their repair crew cut out the window and window flashing with an old saw blade that damaged my expensive plastic trim. They repaired the gauge damaged expensive trim with white caulking. One year later, I spent all summer trying to call Pella about more rotted windows. It took Pella 4 months to change a rotted Pella door and they charged me $550 to change one door that was only nine years old. While they were fixing the door, I showed the Pella's door repair crew 9 more newly rotted windows. Pella sent me a letter that said I was out of my 10 year warranty period and wanted me to pay for the windows. I found the 9 year old Pella receipt, called them back, and said the warranty still had 1 more months. Four months later, Pella agreed and sent me 9 more windows. The windows still need to be replaced and painted. Pella knows that removing, replacing, trimming, and painting windows cost double what the windows are worth. Pella told me they no longer replace defective windows for free. So get out your Windex and test your windows and call PELLA immediately.
Please watch my other Pella and Anderson videos that show all the different ways these windows fail. This information is on my "Aluminum Clad, Vinyl Clad, Window Deterioration the Truth Pella Anderson" video or my Rotten Anderson Vinyl Clad Windows video which are both located on my RUclips Clevelandmarko channel.

We have Pro-line as well and have never been so disappointed with a product and company ever!! That's being nicely said! Every window and door in our house is Pella. Our transoms are about 15 ft from the floor and when it rains it pours inside! Our beautiful crown moulding has been effected as well. My kids rooms have mildew and mold on the window sills and in the winter, we get Ice formation on the inside of our windows! And whomever said there were only 3 involved in the class-action law sui

Having same Issues in Memphis - Multiple window sash failures with rotten wood. Called Pella under the disguise of a replacement windows inquiry and did not mention I had Pella windows. Sales rep came right out and stated I should have call ed service. I ask him to place a service call (he offered), since I figured they would be more responsive if the sales guy opened a ticket. He took pictures and said someone would be calling me... 4 weeks later, not a word from Pella Service. Believe what you read here. They want to sell you windows, but won't stand behind their product.

Thank you very much for this video! At least now I know I am not alone. The more I read about Pella, the worse the story gets. I own a California home which I decided to remodel in 1990s. Installed a Pella sunroom, 2 pairs of doors, and several new Pella windows. All of the original windows in my house have the panes secured with caulk more than 50 years old-none have failed or rotted. The Pellas are another story!
I had a Pella Sunroom installed in my wood frame home in the mid-1990s. During the past year I noticed the aluminum cladding fell off the bottom of one of the outside panes, revealing totally rotted wood underneath. Because this wood was the only thing holding up the outer pane, when the wood went away, the outer pane slipped down, leaving a gap at the top. It looks like the whole sunroom might fall apart if the rest of the wood beneath the Al cladding is in such bad shape.
I am afraid to check all my Pella doors and windows, because I am disabled and I cannot afford to replace them all. If they all rot out, my house will be uninhabitable and I will be homeless.
When the cladding fell off, I looked for evidence of old caulk. None. In my opinion, although I don't do this work myself, it looks like Pella could have prevented some of these catastrophic window failures if they had just taken the time to add caulk under the Al cladding to seal the glass to the wood and cladding. At least that might have kept out water.
Years ago, the sliding locks at the bottom of the Pella double doors got wobbly and fell out. And the drawstring for the pull-up shade placed in between the glass panels of one door ( but not the other) broke. Pella told me the shade wasn't under the warranty, and they didn't make it anymore.
It is scandalous that, at the time, Pella was touted as the best money could buy. I thought Pella would increae the value of my home, I'm sure my home is worth less as a result! I hope there will soon be a robust class action remedy to help us.

Thanks for the good advice. Discovered a bad Pella Proline Aluminum Clad Double Hung window that is 20 feet up in a vaulted ceiling. Noticed the rotting wood because the mold grew enough to spot the entire lower glass pane over 14 years since house was built. We will perform your test and try to head off any more window rot. Only 22 more windows to go!

Uprated. This channel is so good! When I get annoying sales calls for new windows, I tell them in French that I am not confident about these products, and why. I also point out that the workers I hired in 2010 to rehab my apartment did a bad job and disappeared. They are now nowhere to be found, and the custom kitchen I had put in was by a well known French company known for doing bad work -- they eventually folded. This always shuts them up. Our old windows stay -- only one seems baddish.

Nothing but problems within first couple of years. The company has made every excuse in the book and done nothing to rectify the situation!

We have Pella Architect classic series windows. Same exact issue. Pella's response: There is no warranty on the wood sash. 1,000 per sash to change out with new. Other window companies consulted want 30,000 for just four window sash replacements. We have 11 rotting sashes and two doors. I wish I could find a craftsman who could repair them for me. I wish I could find a lawyer to take on these thieving, window shysters'. They need to be sued into oblivion.

Defective seal on all 5 lower clad panels on two ProLine 450 aluminum
clad sliders leading to leaks that ruined finished basement below as
water pours in through wood seams on the INSIDE of the panels. And yes,
I could see green plants growing out from the clad this spring where
the rotted wood had ballooned the clad away from the seal and glass.
When I called Pella, I was told 'thank you for letting us know - is
there anything else I can assist you with'. When I called the store I
purchased them from and who installed them, was told nothing we could
do. Forced to caulk all panels to prevent any further leaks I hope.
They can not take the freeze thaw cycles of northern New England. My
original Norco all-wood windows and doors lasted 30 years

I've had issues with mold on the window frames for at least 3 years. My home was built in 2006, I just learned of the lawsuit. I didn't even know what brand I had until today. I spray down with bleach every year, I'm hoping it's not too late to use caulk on them. My daughter's room is freezing, cold air flows through these windows like an open freezer door. I thought it was the duct work but noticed it was only by the windows. Now I know why, unbelievable!

I sure wish the problem with my Pella windows were fake. 25 of 28 casements do not close unless I put a suction cup on the window to pull them. Not only that, four out of four 5' x 4' fixed windows started leaking within a year so had to caulk them. Trusted my builder when he said Pella was good, never f*cking again. Anyone that wants to buy Pella, good luck to you.

I have Pella ProLine windows in my house and they work incredibly well, and I have no issues with them. At the college I went to there were a variety of Pella ProLine aluminum clad windows, some were rotting while others weren't. I asked the college maintenance people and they said that Pella told them how the windows are painted and proper installation are the biggest difference. The windows in the dorms were pit in by the lowest bidder that did not follow proper installation and did not paint the windows. That combined with the humid air in the dorms caused condensation and icing on the windows which ripped the fuzzy strip out and rotted the wood. The Pella people came and installed the windows in the buildings with the classrooms are and those vary in age from early 90s to 2013. There are no problems at all.

If you’re looking to put a rot free, highly efficient window that stands against the test of time AND offers the best warranty in the industry, do your home a favor and invest in the Renewal by Andersen line.

    • @marcleblanc3225

How can you claim Renewal has the best warranty in the industry when it's less than the Andersen 200/400 warranty? Renewal is overpriced nonsense. You can buy better windows for less money and it's not even close. And that doesn't even get into the bullshit sales tactics used by Renewal sales people, who are independent and do not actually work for Andersen.

Windows are designed to be cleaned with windex, but that doesn't mean you should let a pool of windex accumulate on the glass to cladding seal. If you see a small opening in the window frame use silicone to seal it back up. Never try to dig in the frame with a swizzle stick.

Pella never answered my calls for service and help during my warranty years. Finally, Lowe's staff gave me a hot line number. Over a month later someone came over and said the clad architectural series one that had leaked for over 4 years and destroyed my room under it was out of warranty and sent me a price for a new window with name of installers. They originally installed it. They no longer answer or return my calls. I have never been satisfied with any service or product they sold. My other clad architectural series or windows never opened or closed properly. The out side screens did not swing out and back for cleaning or remove or put back on as request at the time I bought them. Their weather stripping on the double hungs falls off. I cannot use it and get air infiltration. The window that destroyed my room was not suitable for egress, the reason I bought it. I have had to pay contractors to try to help me. This service associate who visited was helpful and nice.

They do not close and lock properly, the fuzzy stuff in the bottom tore away, the gas between the pains in 75% of the windows has leaked out and I have moisture in between the glass. My humidity is below normal here. I have 18 Pellas in my house and the only ones that are fogging are the 7 from 1997. They could be leaking outside, rotting the wood, and the moisture is accumulating onto the glass since it's so close. The humidity in the house is low in every room. I'll have to work on replacing them at some point. I have heard where they placed the metal inside is transferring the cold onto the glass, making it colder and attracting the moisture.

My Pellas are junk too. DO NOT BUY PELLAS . You will replace them inside 6 years like I had to. Brand new house. too I was part of the class action suit, but never got a dime despite Pella coming out and doing a lot of warranty work TWICE The parts were free, but 1K for the labor. Caulk the crap out of them if you are unfortunate to have these on your house. Even the installer pulled me aside and told me of their problems. He showed me where to caulk too. I noticed that the installers caulked all of the new ones they were installing btw the cladding and the glass. I did the same on the ones they weren't replacing. The ones that didn't fail were under a porch roof!

I have Pella ProLine windows that were installed in 1997 or so. They fog up when it's cold outside...and they even ice up on the inside. When the ice thaws, the water runs down into the sash, creating mold. Pella says it's my fault and there's too much moisture in the air, but this happens during "normal" humidity in the house, even at 28%.

It would seem, that what settlement funds are not dispensed, the engaged law firm gets to keep? My old 1959 house had a [for then] a state-of-the-art version of "thermal-pane" Andersen windows. I have similar problem with my Pella Pro Line windows. They will be coming on 1/17/2014 to assess the problem. I do not anticipate them rolling over and doing the right thing, which is to replace the defective windows. I am well within the warranty period, so I will be demanding a proper fix, or full replacement. In my book, pretty straight-forward......if you sell a defective product, admit your mistake, and do the right thing. Much better for business in the long run. The 2 windows they sent out several years ago look the same as my old casements. I almost have a notion to have the back side (East) Pella replacement as the rain isn’t as bad there then just buy a good Marvin or Andersen casement fiberglass for my front side which has beautiful windows. Darn company.

  • @Roberta98901

Pella has installed some of worst windows on our house. We got their fiberglass windows this year and have bugs and cobwebs and dirt in all of our Pella sliders. Their installers inflicted damage everywhere during the installation andn even left shards and chunks of glass for us to cut ourselves on. Not one window was installed without incident. If you want quality, get Renewal By Andersen.

We had Pella come & check ours out, after we reported a rotted window, that you couldn't even open cause the wood had rotted the screws out! They had a rep come & check all windows & they came & picked & choose which ones that they thought needed to be replaced. This was approx. 4 yrs ago. We now have a leak on the ceiling below a rotted window, when we have 1-3" rains. I''m sure this window had been replaced preciously! I have never seen such shody work in a company that is going to costs us dearly to fix all the damage these windows have done! I have yet to call them concerning this matter, however, am not looking for much sympathy on their part. We'll see...to be continued!

Marvin ultimate series are outstanding in performance but their customer service sucks and hard to get parts when needed. Anderson windows A line series are great and there customer service has always been good to us. The 400 series has become mediocre at best. For anyone reading this and wanting an answer. Install is key but the failures that pella is having is nothing new all the jeld-wen products do the same including all there sub lines that they bought up, Kobe windows and so on. Has lots to do with seals, wood treatments, and glazing.

I paid for 6 replacement windows and they look the same. as a matter of fact of the 6 i had to call pella and show digital photos of the terrible quality control. The Alum cladding where the mitre cuts meet was jagged and had a gap. you would think that paying them for the windows a second time and ordering sashes only would result in getting no issues like this. they do not give a hoot about quality it is all about the money. If i had know pella was junk I would have paid more for better quality.

I was interested in the Pella 350 Series (vinyl) windows with the blinds in-between the glass. I can't believe all the problems everyone on RUclips is experiencing with these windows and Customer Service from Pella. I would go ballistic if these issues happened to me and Pella dragged their feet for months on end without replacing the rotted windows and doors. They should be glad I'm not one of their customers. tom Belmonte Right. They said my warranty was over by two weeks (had to call them two weeks almost every day before they answered. I called them the previous summer and they would not return calls for two months. Finally I did find both receipts. The second receipt still had several weeks of warranty. I called them back and they apologized. The next thing I new, I had 16 full windows on my front door. The problem is, that it is going o const me over $500 per window to remove, replace, repair walls, rent crane, seal and apply two coats of paint. So now I have 16 windows in the attic, 40 windows rotting, and do not have 35 K to replace. The funny part is that they sent me new windows with same design issues.

First of all metal clad windows should not be used in any area of the country that goes through all 4 seasons. ALL METAL SWEATS!!!!!!!. These windows are meant for dry, arid climates where metal cladding is actually needed. Also the 200 series Andersen shown in the video is not discontinued. ALL of Andersens' new construction windows and doors are vinyl clad wood STILL TO THIS DAY! Disregard the fact that the bottom corners are not covered. Any type of puncture on any type of cladding against wood WILL MAKE IT ROT! If you are in the market for new windows or doors seek out the best bang for your buck. Fiberglass is definitely top of the line as far as manufacturing goes. Which is why MARVIN, Pella and Loewen (just to name a few) have manufactured there top windows out of fiberglass. If fiberglass is not in your budget and you live in an area rich in moisture such as the northeast do not be afraid of vinyl! YES it has a cheesy reputation but do your do-diligence and research and will find a quality manufacturer that interests you. AND DON'T FALL VICTIM TO OPINIONATED VIDEOS ON RUclips!
