Haunted games in reality: "This door wouldn't open until I left and reentered the room five times, and then the game force quit and corrupted all my save files from the last 3 hours."
Kinda unrelated to your joke but I just love how the phrase "hyper realistic blood" is synonymous with stupid creepypastas now. It amuses me quite a bit.

Just started playing Daggerfall Unity and I can confirm that old school RPGs were really just fantasy simulators.
@@svendays Imagine having a joke go THIS far over your head.
It also explains why most adventures start in the tavern.
Yeah, but real life has a character option you can take at any time to gain everlasting life, no matter what sort of build you had been previously running. The creator went to literally painstaking lengths to put it in the setting. In most RPGs, you can't accomplish that without cheat codes.
Considering that "pick locks" was listed as a skill/stat, I think the chest in the witch's house WAS locked, and it only opened the third time because you succeeded in picking the lock that time.
I'm almost convinced none of those numbers matter. There's no way that's the only picklock check in the game... I mean... it can't be, right?
@@patchmoulton5438 For a game that old? Yeah its possible. While specific examples escape me, I've seen games with "skills" that never get used.

I remember this game even though I never played it for one reason:
When this game launched on Steam it promoted the following “interesting feature” in the marketing blurb which stated that the original release of the game featured the soundtrack. Which was a big deal for a CD game from the ‘90s. And of course they carried over this tradition by including it in the game files along with a set of instructions that ended in “... you can then burn the soundtrack onto your CD drive.
Yep, they ported a 15-year-old game onto Steam with the most interesting feature being, “You can burn the soundtrack onto an audio CD onto a CD drive that you don’t have anymore from a digital game.”
Yeah, that's my only knowledge of the game as well, because Totalbiscuit mentioned this on his podcast back in 2014, and they made a whole riff about outdated technology out of it that got animated.

These are the best Game Dungeon episodes, where Ross has to fight the game as much as he plays it.
Lots of callbacks to old episodes this one:
"Had enough of that fight-and-wait crap in other RPGS" -Requital
"Gamer Dementia" -Sonic Heroes
"Trying to sneak the razor blades in the apples" -Last Stand
"Fight-and-wait crap" also applies to The Chosen's stamina mechanic.

Haha, the old "why spec in a weapon that's not a sword because every legendary weapon ever made is a sword" problem of RPGs. That was a thing in too many RPGs to be honest. Even the original Baldur's Gate games warned you to not spec too hard into Katanas because you're not in Japan!
Seriously, if you're not going to make non-swords viable throughout the game, why even bother having them? Either give regular upgrades for all weapons that keep them competitive, or don't model them to begin with.
I remember Risen subverted this and had an axe be the ultimate legendary weapon.
The original Baldur's Gate didn't have katanas. BG2 totally gave that warning though. Which was hilarious, because one of the best weapons in the game was a katana.
That's why the developers of Planescape Torment didn't have swords ( imagine a D&D game without swords). I always wondered why until I saw a interview with the developers .

The game Desktop Dungeons entire premise is basically what you described Ross with needing to balance fighting enemies for exp. while also needing to maintain health. It’s not a full RPG, it’s more like if minesweeper and a dungeon crawler had a child, so the game is working your way through mini dungeons in a puzzle-ish fashion. The goal of each dungeon is to level up enough to beat one boss enemy at the end. Exploration is pretty interesting as well, because unexplored tiles are a resource you also have to manage; exploring a tile gives you back health and mana (unless you’re poisoned or mana-burnt respectively). So you need some tiles to explore at the end to avoid screwing yourself by not being able to heal, but you also need to explore to find gold, stat buffs, and enemies that are weak enough for you to take down.
Also the idea of most rougelikes. You need to explore to find loot so you are powerful enough to beat the dungeon boss but take the risk of dying while doing it.
"I think money only matters if you're a magic user. In the game, I mean." Oh damn Ross, that was clever.
DnD guy here, the pincer monsters are very similar to "Gas Spores" that have been in the monster manual as early as 1st edition. They're mostly harmless, but they can serve as a trap to players because they can look like Beholders in dim light/darkness. They never had pincers AFAIK, they're more of a fungus monster, but the explosive death causing chain reactions is there. In DnD when they explode the poisonous spores they release will kill your character in a number of hours unless you cure the disease, after which the player's body will start releasing more spores. They were an interesting mix of puzzle and combat when my players first encountered one.
I was thinking the same thing. They aren't exactly the same, but the concept and overall method of dealing with them is effectively the same.
Hey wait a minute
What were Beholders in 1st edition like? From the most I’ve heard of Beholders, this just sounds like a trap disguised as an even deadlier trap…

Yeah, so that sliding barrel puzzle about 8 minutes in? I never got past that point as a kid. I think I might have destroyed the barrels and then saved.
I just realized, Ross should REALLY take a look at Konung. It's a late 90s Eastern European real time RPG with a huge party traveling the world and beating the crap out of everything, somewhat similarly to Dungeon Siege! Oh, and it has some great music, too!
@@gasenkotsu As far as I know, the let's play of Konung that I did a while back might be some of the only footage of that game on all of English RUclips.

For the eyes blowing up, the one monster I can think of are Gas Spores, which are monsters that pretend being Beholders, from AD&D. You've only got like, 5% chance of recognizing they're just giant bags full of gas and spores rather than a Beholder, and if they take even 1 HP of damage, they blow up and turn *you* into another Gas Spore. It's one of those monsters that makes you think "wait, why isn't the entire world overtaken by those things?"
They're definitely at least inspired by them, they just seems so out of place in this game with all the other exceedingly generic enemies.
Speaking of, I'd love a compendium specifically for "D&D monsters that really should have caused the apocalypse by now." First two entries for sure would be Gas Spores and Vargouilles.
I feel like you could run horror scenarios with a lot of the DnD enemies. Huh. There's a thought...
Prolly cuz they only grow in the Underdark.......the one in D&D, not Clans......
I like that gas spore's life cycle only makes sense in a world where people's reaction to seeing a monster as dangerous as beholder is "Let's kill it for XP".

One thing I appreciate about Ross's descriptions is that when he says something goes "on and on", he means it. He's not talking about 5 minutes of repetitive game play.
YEEEEESSSSSS!!!! ROSS'S GAME DUNGEON ONCE AGAIN! I eagerly await every episode! Thanks so much for all your hard work Ross.
Having watched this video multiple times I can say with some authority that Clans is a game with problems problems problems problems problems
I thi.. I think you're right
I don't know why, Ross - but this is probably the 10th time I've re-watched this
Something about this, and Baldies, and Veil of Darkness keeps me coming back
Hope everything's going well on the moon :)
I think I've spent no small portion of my entire time on youtube watching Ross's videos. I don't know how or why but the rewatch value of game dungeon and freeman's mind are outstanding.
for the last 3 years, every christmas i watch the 2 episode special of revenant while eating salt and vinegar chips and drink dry red wine. i have no idea why, it just works.
Yes! I was just thinking about how it's been awhile since the last Game Dungeon. This is the best series ever Ross, keep 'em coming man!
18:05 is actually a stock hollywood sound effect called "the howie scream"
Gas spores are old 1st edition monsters that look vaguely like beholders and expel a poisonous gas when cut. I think that's pretty close to what you encounter in the game.
Finally. More Ross in my diet. I was beginning to think I was going to have to resort to feasting on a smorgasbord of the remains of old videos, Civvie 11, and Nitro Rad in order fill my hunger.
But you came through with some hot fresh content, and boy is it good!
Two episodes in three days?! That is a true a Holiday! Thank you Ross and have a great Halloween (sorry for being a bit late xD)!
i love this channel, it's a cosy feeling listening and watching these vids
