I’ve been a gamer for 41 years….GT7 in VR with a good wheel is the most incredible gaming experience I’ve ever had! It’s how I imagined gaming to be like in the future, when I was a child.
I just didn't understand what I was seeing. It's my first time with vr is psvr 2. Almost took the plunge with the first vr, but I didn't. It's a level of immersion I just wasn't prepared for in any way, I had no idea.
@@IAmDarklight81 actually not true at all…been driving AC PC2 and ACC or AM2 in VR and NONE of those felt as real, as immersive or as detailed with uncanny realistic lighting and perfectly rendered cars like GT7. Not even close! They’re all pretty janky tbh.
Hahaha that is weird. I literally just did that, a few minutes ago...I got the Grand Turismo F1 car at Brand Central (I know its unlockable but I was too lazy) and then spent 20+ mins driving around Tokyo Expressway at night. It was amazing. Especially when the sparks fly at you, i just liked looking up at buildings while I hurtle around at full speed. Lol

After playing GT7 in vr there is no way I could return playing the flat version. Just an amazing experience everyone I showed it was blown away in the headset.
especially considering the field of view. in VR, we can see detail way up the road. in 2D, we've got a fisheye lens and far off brake markers or turn-in markers are a mere handful of pixels. I too cannot go back
@@StrangerHappenedMotion sickness comes from the mismatch of information going to your brain where your eyes sees motion but your inner ear not detect the motion(opposite for sea sickness). So as long as you play VR games where there is no smooth locomotion you should be fine. GT7 showcase mode would be fine but racing will make you sick if you are prone to it. All VR games that have a teleport locomotion option or games where the camera is stationary like Moss and Demeo would also be fine.
I've been a VR nerd for 7 years and owned a bunch of hmds combined with a high-end PC but Gran Turismo 7 VR still blew my mind completely. It's so insanely good but all the superlatives in the world can't describe it even closely. You have to experience it. Thanks for covering this, DF.
@@zwenkwiel816 I started playing AC not that long ago so I haven't modded it yet. It's on my to-do list.. Unmodded AC was cool but not as exciting as GT7. I hope Shutoko will change that. It seems it could. Mostly played Skyrim, Fallout, Alyx and ED all those years.

I bought a racing rig with wheel/pedals/shifter in anticipation of VR2 and it was worth every penny. The experience feels so real it's unreal. Sony and Polyphony Digital absolutely nailed it.
Too bad it’s muddy and blurry with a sweet spot for viewing that’s way to small. They really cheaper out on the lenses and it ruins the whole headset. Anything that isn’t directly front and center is blurry, full of godrays arching towards your eyes or has a sickening amount of chromatic aberration. Like seriously try focusing on any part of the dashboard in the car. Even the speedometer is blurry and hard to read looking directly at it.
@@ancientflames looks pretty good to me for the cost. There is blurring around the 90° to 110° viewing angle for sure but there's always a give and take to the lenses. As far as I know, all VR headsets use Fresnel lenses with the exception of the $2,000 Varjo that uses aspheric lenses and there's one that uses pancake lenses I believe. Each of them have their own advantages/disadvantages. Weight, dulling of image, cost, narrow view, or needing to be custom to the users eye. If cost isn't a concern you could have some custom aspheric lenses made and install them yourself which I looked into a bit but for optical quality plastic lenses they are around $1,000 per lens, glass is more expensive and heavier. Might be worth it though if you're an enthusiast. For me, for less than $600, I think it's pretty great.
@@donnajones1075 anyway, just out of curiosity, did you have any VR experience before getting the PS VR2? I had only used a crappy Google cardboard style VR a couple times before but I knew from doing some research what I was getting myself into as far as VR quality goes. I think people didn't realize what VR typically looks like or it's limitations, even for high-end models. It looks good enough that I've found myself a couple times trying to rest my arm on an arm rest or door panel that doesn't exist. And maybe I'm just a wimp but I can't even play resident evil village 😅. I think I'm going to have to do a normal 2D playthrough so I know what to expect before I can physically force myself to walk through some of the rooms. I made it through the VR tutorial and up to the first dark cabin and said "hell no"
GT7 in VR with a steering wheel and pedals is one of the best experiences I have had in gaming. Was worried I had overspent for PSVR2, but it's honestly worth every penny
GT7 in VR is one of my favorite gaming experiences I've ever had. It feels like that jump from SNES to N64 for me all over again. Hoping this is the next step for video games as a whole.
I see it more as a DVD to Blu-Ray jump; it's not like we didn't have positional audio, 3D rendering, & literally every single choice design-wise in GT Sport, for example, even down to the same missing in-race data.
This was my first experience of GT in VR. Mainly due to the VR1 fogging up and motion sickness on PS4. This VR2 is so much better. I can play for much longer wit no fog or motion issues. I love it!
That is great to hear! One of the reasons why I stopped using the PSVR is because I never could get over the motion sickness, and taking dramamine made me way too tired and sleepy.
Finally someone has been able to turn their impressions into words describing how it really feels, rather than just spewing out "wow", "mind blown", etc. Thank you!
@@Noah-Lach Exactly. It may be essentially identical design-wise to GT Sport minus the hardware limitations, but he did explicitly address some of them (albeit the identical missing in-race data seems more of an oversight than a deliberate choice).

@@dahcoconut926 yeah racing with a dualsense is still really fun, the haptic triggers and rumble are amazing, and just have the cockpit view is half the immersion . a wheel is next level though
PS has mentioned before that one of their VR approach is to have hybrid games. GT7 and RE8 are the best example. I think this is the best approach for a successful VR. 100% VR games as well but the market is "small" still and able to sell your game with VR modes is good approach
I'd also be perfectly happy with some games giving me a VR first person view, but the controls still being traditional dual sense based. So it wouldn't even have to be a complete overhaul of control schemes.
I disagree, VR-ports or whatever are never as good as Native VR-games. (racing games being the exception) it will help build out a library at a pretty low cost so I'm not against it but I think they should make some big AAA VR exclusives as well if they really want to sell some headsets.
Imo it's the way to go forward. It's incredibly expensive to make a AAA game and doing it just for VR is a huge financial risk for Sony. So why not do a flat AAA title and let a separate team port it to VR with some cool VR mechanics like in RE8. Much easier and much less expensive. I hope the success of GT7 and RE8 (both flatscreen titles) will show Sony this is the way to go
@@scarface11991 and much less impressive/less incentive for people to buy PSVR2. why get PSVR2 if you can play all your favorite games on the flat screen as well? also designing a game and then porting it to VR or vice versa always leaves it marks. games like Horizon call of the mountain or Half Life Alyx simply wouldn't work without VR (or they would be boring) and conversely games like RE8 are never as good at being VR games as games designed for VR from the ground up. everything from visuals to gameplay balance needs to be different for a flat screen game and a VR game. (racing games kind of being the exception here) again that's not to say they shouldn't make these VR ports at all as it is a pretty low cost/risk way to expand the library and there's definitely some cool experiences to be had. I just feel like not making big AAA VR exclusives would really be holding VR back....

I held out on playing this until it was in VR. After experiencing it, I don’t wanna sully it by trying it on a flatscreen. Words can describe the feeling of ‘being’ in the driver seat for the first time. It’s phenomenal
‘Presence’ is the word I use. You feel a sense of presence in the GT world. You mind is transported to a race track and that’s where you stay, until you take the headset off… then you get that weird sensation of “oh, I’m in my room, of course I’m in my room… but I was just somewhere else”. didn't they have like an interior show room mode in older GT games? like they always modeled the interiors pretty accurately so I guess it's just a nice coincidence for VR.
@@zwenkwiel816 Starting with GT5 all the "premium" cars (i.e. the cars that weren't ported from PS2) had fully-modeled interiors, yeah. There were the photo modes and the 'landscape' or whatever options that allowed you to view the cars much closer up and take fancy pics and things

Digital Foundry is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels! Can make something I don't know much about (game dev & graphics tech) and make it interesting and fun. Feels like I'm learning something new every time
I am obsessed with GT7 in vr. I used to use the braking zone assist when racing just to get a general idea usually I ignored it, but the depth perception is so good now I can visually judge braking zones just by looking into the corner as I approach. For anyone with this technology and a sim rig, I HIGHLY recommend the 1hr race at spa. Blasting around that track in the dead of night in pouring rain with the HUD turned off is something else. Words cannot express the level of immersion I experienced
Man we've come such a long way from the OG Ridge Racer. The foveated rendering and HDR support of the PSVR2 really seem to be a gamechanger for immersive titles like this and I can't wait to see what else developers will be able to acheive with the tech. I appreciate the thorough review as always John!
Bought my PSVR2-set yesterday, and I don’t think I can go back to 2D racing again. The VR mode in GT7 is incredible, especially combined with a racing wheel. 😍😃
@@Johnny-ru5sm I think Mielahisvuhota’s suggestion is good. Haven’t tried it myself but the wheel is a bit more affordable than others, and the transition from controller to wheel is a big enough leap in my opinion. Personally I bought a Fanatec CSL Elite (with ps4 wheel) a few years ago but I think that particular model has been discontinued now unfortunately. Fanatec has got some other models still, but they are a bit more expensive than Logitech/Thrustmaster equivalents.
GT7 on PSVR2 is really a revelation for me. Knowing when to brake before a turn is no longer a matter of memorization, but of “feel” thanks to the added depth perception. It’s really a completely different experience than the flat game.
John's tweets on this made me impulse buy a G29 to go with the headset, and it's an incredible experience. Even my non-gaming partner absolutely loved it (after her initial exasperation at the sight of the setup in the spare room).
I've been blown away between GT7 and RE8. It really proves that you can playthrough full games with no problems when they are done right. No compromises and no dizzeyness. I ran out and bought Playseat Challenge and pulled out my Ps4 Logitech wheel. This is such a crazy upgrade from the original PSVR. If they can just get me a couple more Full titles a year, I will be totally happy with my purchase. Lets hope RE4 remake is the full game and this new Assassins creed VR turns out to be ore than just a 2 hour experience. I hope more people will support this thing. Also a shout out to Drums Rock VR, if you liked playing Drums in Rockband you should buy this $20 game!
I love it too. But it's not perfect yet. The good thing about going back to 2D playing something like Battlefield 2042, is that you really appreciate the resolution of modern games again. Even on my 7 year old SONY 4K TV. Because lets face it, PSVR2 is good but it feels more like 720p in the distance in GT7 for example up to maybe 1440p in showroom close ups. But that's the software side of it, the PS5 just can't handle more pixels, remember it has to render two images and more frames. In Cinema mode watching 4K content you can see the full 2K resolution when setting the screen size option to it's fullest 💟
@@eSKAone- Yeah, I was kind of glad that while VR does come with some visual artifacts and sacrifices in clarity, it still makes flat-screens the best for absolute clarity so it still has its place PSVR2's visuals are still a generation better than PSVR1, and the immersion of being in the 3D environment for racers and shooters means the visuals don't bother me at all.
I was terrible at driving in this game. In particular the cockpit view. But driving in VR is absolutely perfect. I’ve been driving for decades in the real world and it’s remarkable how much it feels like you’re really behind the wheel. I hardly ever played Sport in VR, much preferred playing on flat screen but I don’t think I’ll ever play GT7 on flat screen again. Being able to see exactly where other cars are is incredible and the first time I looked out of the right window to see if I was far enough in front of another car to turn in, my jaw dropped when I saw it still along side me with the front discs glowing. ❤this game in VR
Haven’t had my mind blown by a game like this in a very long time. Might be the most impressed I’ve ever been. The amount of detail they put into the cars is amazing.
@4:25 😂 Reminds me of my first VR experience which was GT Sport on PSVR1 in my mates racing setup. Completely tricked my mind, and I kept reaching to adjust the non-existent rear view mirror. At one point when cruising in a cabriolet, I went to lean my elbow on the top of the door, and fell out of the chair. Lol. Cant wait until GT7 goes on sale again, so I can have my mind blown all over again.
It's really crazy how light reelections work in PSVR2 in this game. I had a race during a sunset and the sun reflected onto one of the cars in front of me and it was very piercing to my eyes and had to look away rather the light reflection being just a while circle on the back of the car.

To achieve the ps5+psvr2 level of performance in a pcvr headset would cost two or three times the cost of a ps5-psvr2 VR system, and at the moment there is no pcvr headset with oled-hdr displays, eye tracking, foveated rendering and haptics, if there was someone would be asking a lot of money for it, and the psvr2 is plug and play no setup or driver issues to contend with, I think this whole Sony VR system is extremely cheap for what it brings to VR gamers, and it is still only early days, as developers get used to programming vr games we will see even better vr games.
Nice review! I started with GT7 on VR2 this weekend. Before I didn't really like the realistic racing games, as i could not get any feeling of speed or experience driving, and therefore i found this games boring. Now with VR2, for me this has totally changed. I am addicted now and can't stop going to beat my times over and over again. Everything feels so realistic, the difference between driving different cars is so big. At first I found it strange that after VR1 PlayStation invested in a second VR. But now i know why, i really believe this can be the future. GT7, and Horizon CO Mountain are for me big steps in to the new possibilities with games. Thank you Sony for bringing this experience to me ❤

It's whats being said during these comparisons what I really look forward to in these videos.

Did you have any nausea issues? I remember years ago that was a thing with VR. Maybe that was just a latency issue with early models though.
If Sony can live up to that vision we´re in for a treat. So far the best games in my opinion right now is RE8 And GT7. One can only hope:)
(racing games kind of being the exception here)
again that's not to say they shouldn't make these VR ports at all as it is a pretty low cost/risk way to expand the library and there's definitely some cool experiences to be had. I just feel like not making big AAA VR exclusives would really be holding VR back....

Same, more devs need to add vr modes to their new games because I need more!
It’s also much easier to judge distances etc.

@@G00NERJ80 Yeah. Just that I'm kind of an arcade racer, at heart. I usually prefer a much more arcade experience. But VR does change that a bit as I'm fine with a bit less arcade, if the experience is good enough.
@@akaimizu1 I thought I only liked arcade racers until I bought GT7 in anticipation of PSVR 2 a couple of months ago and I ended up playing it for like 50 hours before the PSVR even showed up.
@@akaimizu1 You don't have to go all in on the sim part, there are lots of options at your disposal to make driving as easy or hard as you want it to be. You can't lose really. The game is great for anyone interesting in racing no matter the skill or style you want to play in.
@@akaimizu1 for me i am so impressed with that.
wow. i actually want to buy a ps5 and the vr set now. great review.
If you can afford it, you won't be disappointed. It is really as amazing as we all say
It's amazing value really. I got a valve index and gaming pc a few years back and it cost me 4 times the cost the ps5 and psvr2 would. Personally I prefer the Psvr2 to my index and the reverb G2 my son has.
I’m loving this at the moment in vr, totally blown away with this experience, I’d recommend this to anyone that afford it, know its a huge amount to purchase but life’s too short.
I also bought a $1200 7900 XTX graphics card (the Sapphire Nitro+), so I can easily justify to myself the PSVR2 was a more responsible purchase due to costing less than half of that.
@@AKSBSU Ps-vr2 and ps5 cost is mere fraction in comparison to pc components and for what you’re actually getting is really good value, but overall ps5-vr2 equates to £1000, so big savings.
I love my PSVR2, GT 7 is fantastic and so is RE 8. Horizon is also really fun, I need to go back and play more but was blown away from the first few hours. I wear glasses and this is by far the best VR experience I've had. My glasses fit comfortably and the weight balance feels really good, I dont feel all the weight on my nose/forehead - it's evenly distributed. Excited to see what Sony does for VR2, hoping they get some more tipple A games on the platform. It's a big win for the VR community!
I was caught up playing a few different things until i tried GT7 on PSVR2. And just wow. Im not even a GT or racing sim fan so that should tell u how much of an essential experience this is.
It is so much fun and the height differences on some tracks are huge. Absolutely loving it 😍
yeah! i did Daytona earlier and the banking corners are sick too!
its absolutely incredible. i went round interlargos earlier in the 88 mclaren (mp4/4). you just cant seem to grasp the genuine sense of speed, depth of field. truly astonishing.
GT7 in VR is so damn good, I'm now looking into buying a simrig. I want the seat, the wheel, the pedals, the shifter, the VR......I want the full immersion. My only tiny complaint is I do wish they would let you start and rev the car from the interior in the VR showroom mode.
Just did the same thing, lol. Bought a PSVR2. Was so impressed bought my first Sim rig and a new wheel. Put it together last night :)
The revving of the engine could be added into the game in some future update.
I’m getting my vr2 set on tuesday and considering i have absolutely NO previous exprience VR i can only hope that i can use this enough before possibly feeling nauseous to make a sense for the purchase.
@@markotark You'll be good on GT7. Some of the first person POV games, you will have to get your "VR legs" under you. Those can get overwhelming at times. Racing seems to be fine and I highly recommend a 3rd person game like Moss & Moss II. Those have no motion sickness at all and just happen to be fantastic games.
@@SlammedZero Thanks for the tips!
I have no idea where on the possible VR-sickness spectrum i might fall, as i’ve never gotten sick in a car, bus or a plane but being on boats in rough water makes me sick.
I even got sick while on the seaman-schools ship, but considering that it was the worst storm in a decade and only one student out of a dozen and the chief-engineer weren’t puking i’ll just have to wait and see.
Still, even if i can’t use VR for hours i’m still left with cinematic mode when my father is visiting and takes over the TV to look at endless hours of sport…
VR is like a DMT or magic mushroom experience.
You absolutely don't know what it is until you experience it.
GT7 in VR is just something you can’t show how immersive it really is in a flat RUclips video. All I can say is I bought a wheel, pedals and a frame just a week later and it just takes it up another level. It works great with the controllers but with the wheel, wow 🔥🔥🔥
I love imagining John crawling around his play space looking at the showroom cars.
I'm fairly new to VR, played Horizon Call of the Mountain at launch, was blown away. Now, I purchased GT7, and my jaw literally dropped. Wow. I'm never going back to flat screen again, the immersion in VR is insane holy crab
I’m absolutely loving GT7 in VR, it’s such an improvement over PSVR1 and GTSport.
It has been so much fun, and I haven’t even tried it in multiplayer yet! I’ve just been blown away by all the other stuff lol
It is absolutely incredible I’m so happy I bought this thing, now I need a wheel
Lol. Cant wait until GT7 goes on sale again, so I can have my mind blown all over again.
as a long time vr racer in Iracing, I can attest to the greatness of being able to see the apex and how close that bumper really is.
It's really crazy how light reelections work in PSVR2 in this game. I had a race during a sunset and the sun reflected onto one of the cars in front of me and it was very piercing to my eyes and had to look away rather the light reflection being just a while circle on the back of the car.
You can turn the brightness of the headset down, I keep it at like 75% so I can game longer.
@@Mickice why would you trieb down the HDR beauty???
@@kraenk12 Longevity? I used to do the same with PSVR1 and Sony's OLED Head Mounted Display used for watching movies. I assume the displays and my eyes will last longer not getting blasted.
@@kraenk12it helps with the gross looking screen door effect and the terrible mura of the cheap lenses Sony chose.
@@ancientflames mura is an effect from the OLED panel. Nothing to do with lenses.
DAMN, THIS MAKES ME WANT TO TRY VR!
It has been so much fun. Man I am happy I got the VR
Great review for an amazing experience
This warms my heart to see people now appreciate GT7 for what it really is. Breathe Taking! Great review DF
2:28: That's so cool. Well done, developers. That kind a user-friendliness is key when bringing relatively new technology to the masses. The cutbacks made look very smartly chosen, with the exception of the framerate. There's an impressive parity between the two.
10:47: Oh my god! That would be so *cool* to see!
I played over 130 hours to get the platinum in Gran Turismo 7 and can't wait to play it in VR.
This VR content is some of my favorite content from you guys
John you are the best. I'm loving GT in vr it's freaking awesome
Got my VR2 headset this morning, after booting up GT7 in VR mode my jaw hit the floor
I have GT7. I've already spent €850 for a Fanatec GT DD Pro. I do want a psvr 2 but the expense is stopping me. It looks absolutely mind blowing.
I'm still waiting for them to port WipEout Omega Collection to PS5. That is one of the best racing games on PSVR1 period. As long as you have the stomach for it that is...
GT7 on PSVR2 is gotta to say...very impressive. Thanks to powerful PS5 hardware, VR titles were no longer being treated as "tech demo", they have becoming into a full-fledged title.
I have it, it’s so amazingly cool. Love GT7 in VR, the immersion and enjoyment are ramped up to 10
I was never a racing fan, and Gran Turismo 1 was probably the last Gran Turismo I really was into. Got my psvr2 and heard lots of good things about GT7. Tried it using duelsense motion mode and liked it so much that I ordered thrustmaster 300 rs gt the next day. Now i have the shifter coming tomorrow. The experience is unreal...or real.
The shifter is awesome
Insane. Truly insane. I’m happy I finally have a VR headset so I can experience this. I just wish I still had my simrig to play this
To achieve the ps5+psvr2 level of performance in a pcvr headset would cost two or three times the cost of a ps5-psvr2 VR system, and at the moment there is no pcvr headset with oled-hdr displays, eye tracking, foveated rendering and haptics, if there was someone would be asking a lot of money for it, and the psvr2 is plug and play no setup or driver issues to contend with, I think this whole Sony VR system is extremely cheap for what it brings to VR gamers, and it is still only early days, as developers get used to programming vr games we will see even better vr games.
Once you go VR in gt7 you can never go back to the norm
Thank you Sony for bringing this experience to me ❤
I know I would have a massive smile on my face if I had VR and a wheel. It looks incredible!
After I wasted the first 30 minutes to try and “turn VR mode on”, I stumbled onto the VR gallery mode and was blown away by the sun rays bouncing off the materials on my virtual M3
I love the comparisons to the flat versions! It doesn't really matter they're not perfectly aligned, that's totally understandable due to the nature of VR. It's whats being said during these comparisons what I really look forward to in these videos. Hopefully we see coverage for Resident Evil Village and No Man's Sky too (The latter is said to look like a PS VR1 game, which is interesting since the PS VR1 game supossedly ran at 720p on a base PS4)
Absolutely loving my PSVR2 and GT7 (as well other games).
@@MrGamecatCanaveral It’s pretty awesome. I love the weapons. Almost as much as I love watching people new to the game dropping their guns during a firefight. 😂
@@MrGamecatCanaveral I won’t lie to you. I’ve had my moments. When things get tense it’s hard not to squeeze that button. Lol
Don’t forget it’s Wesday today. Always look forward to PSVR2 without parole!
Fuck it. I’m getting one…
VR sim racing is some of the most fun I've ever had. It gets an amazing reaction out of family and friends too!
That's what I'm thinking. I was a bit hesitant because I keep reading bad things vs the Quest 2 (Standalone) but I trust these guys and this game looks amazing!
But if you play on a 4K TV normally it still does look waaay less sharp in VR of course. It does look worse in the headset than in the recording. Don't get me wrong..it's still great but it's nowhere near as sharp as on a TV...and I'm very sensitive too something like the mura effect. It's very hard for me to ignore that.

@@cliverosfield69I played it. I own the PSVR2 😂😂
After I confirmed and heard feedback regarding the PSVR2 with GT7 I purchased the PS5, PSVR2, and a PS5 copy JUST to play them with my steering wheel, and you're right it's amazing.
We would love a comparison between GT Sport and GT7 in VR Modes. Great work as always John!
lol I can't imagine why. Did you try GT Sport in VR? It was pretty rough
@@caseyrice768 I did, and it was my first ever experience in VR ever. It was mind blowing. And why? Well, it would be very interesting to see the progress and changes that have been made after all these years. Don’t you think?
I myself had grabbed for the in game sun visor, only to be reminded that I was in a game. The HDR is pretty incredible in this game, thus making the sun realistically bright.
In assetto corsa they have support for motion controllers, lets you adjust the mirrors and shit by just grabbing them. would be cool if they did that for sun visors and shit too
@@zwenkwiel816 would love to see a PSVR2 version of that too!
I've never cared about driving sims until now. On PSVR2 with a force feedback wheel, it's like playing in an arcade. I don't know if I've ever had more fun
omg. we are living in the future now. it’s amazing.
