Look up the definition of a sports car and there's a good change that a #Porsche #911Carrera will be pictured right next to it. For over 50 years, Porsche has been dominating the sports car market, but the biggest problem with the car has to do with the price. While you can buy a new one for under $100,000, trying find one on dealer lots can be a huge challenge unless you special order it. Leasing a 911 is pretty common so once that vehicle is turned in, a 3 year old model like this 2015 #Carrera S can be a tempting option. Watch the video to find out if purchasing a pre-owned model delivers the same kind of thrills as someone who bought a brand new one off the showroom floor.

Your request for us to review used cars again has been heard! While we tend to focus primarily on new cars, we understand that some of you will just never buy a new car. We will try our best to review a used car from time to time so we hope you guys enjoy this one! Also, we had an audio issue that showed up during the test drive scene and because of that, we had to switch a couple times between the primary mic and our secondary mic. The bad cable has since been thrown out and there shouldn't be anymore audio issues moving forward. P.S. stay tuned till the end for some fun bloopers, sometimes filming in public locations can be a challenge... Thanks for watching guys!

Backup cameras are mandatory on all cars sold in the United States now on cars built after May 2018. So every Porsche built after that date will have them. Personally for as much as you pay for a Porsche they should have been standard a long time ago.

Agree. Why not add that safety. These cars are going to be driven on t he STREET. In under-ground garages. Narrow streets. why not add that extra level of safety (e.g. front/rear camera, 350 camera view, ..auto park assist.). Don't want to use them turn them off. Pick-up trucks have it (Ford F159, RAM 1500...)...
911's are for posers. Which is why most buy them. STATUS. The engine is in the wrong place. No matter what suspension/engine tech they have.

  • @sjwang40

I have a 997 and previously had a Miata. I also test drove Caymans before buying my 911. One thing that may be surprising to people who haven't driven a 911 before is that the handling is not as responsive or nimble as you might expect. It has very very high handling limits and can go around a track very quickpy, but you never forget that the engine is hanging out over the back axle. It's not tossable like a Cayman or even a Miata on a twisty back road. However, the engine is truly amazing and makes up for some of the handling deficiencies. It's just a shame that the car is so fast you can't explore the redline that often.
Also, I do carry my kid in the back of my 911! It's very doable. She is in a rear facing car seat and I have a folding stroller that fits the frunk. Porsche actually sells a front facing car seat I think.

When I was younger, I daily drove a two seat roadster for 4 years, and I can assure, backseats matter even if people can't realistically ride in them. The seats in the 911 are great for stashing backpacks, groceries, jackets, and whatever else junk clutters your car.

Imo, a lightly used pre-991.2 is one of the best sub-100K luxury sports cars you can get right now. A perfectly balanced sports car that won't cost a fortune to maintain, still looks and feels brand new (or still very "undated" if you go for a 997), with all its N/A glory, and a hefty discount.

The Vette has grip and grunt beyond expectations, it's a MOSH PIT where the 991 is graceful and more like a symphony. Both are a joy to own and drive.

So how much would this car cost if you were to buy one spec'd like this CPO ?
edit: did some research and they run about $90k still, not much of a bargain considering a new cayman s is just as fast and is more nimble. Not really a bargain compared to the new 911 either which start around 95k - even the base model of those are turbocharged and pretty much as fast as the naturally aspirated 3.8.
Low mileage 2012/13 carerra S's are probably more reasonable and can be had for under 75k. 90-95k for a 3 year old one is still too much for it to be considered a bargain compared to the prices in porsche's current model line.

you pay to not have a turbo 4-pot. interior is also a bit more posh. it's a car with decades of pedigree. I could go on. as eric said it looks like you should just go with the cayman if you don't care for what the 911 has over the cayman.

Most Porsche models hold their value. Some even increase depending of what it is (rare or "special"). However they are one of the most reliable and well built outside of a Lexus, but you get the a much more exciting vehicle to own. SO all in all, you really can't go wrong, with picking up even a 10 year old one. SO if a fairly new one is way outside your comfort zone, then I would get something 10 years old like a Cayman s or Carerra S

I truly believe 997 911 and 981 Caymans are going to be very desirable cars in the future due to the NA flat 6 howl. NOT classics, classic tag likely belong to limited models (EX. Spyder, GT, etc). Similar to like how we see on the road 993s right now. But limited stuff like an air cooled RS is another realm and can be a classic.

reason the seat wouldbt go back wheb you sat in the back is because whoever sat there adjusted the seat in the higher position. if the sest is in low, it doesnt have that problem. and my 6 year old loves riding in the back of mine with a booster. been on 2-3 hr drives with no complaints from the little one or the front passenger

911s stopped being bargains 10 years ago. If you can afford it, it's a great car, but anything close to a bargain is some sort of 996, and if it's a well maintained 996 I doubt it will be a bargain either.

When the refreshed 991.2s drop in price, those will be the performance bargains. The turbo motor guarantees easy hp gains. If I get a 991, it's going to be a dot two. But from a purist perspective the 996/997 911s are the way to go. Just don't get bitten by the mod bug.

Great video. Just bought my 2012 991 Carrera S Cabriolet. The previous owner put some Bilstine Coilovers, headers, air splitter (forgot name) between air intakes, and overly quite Fabspeed exhaust no loud button 😒. But had the nice carbon for the tips. Still sounds incredible after about 4000 rpm’s..Oh and step 1 tune by a company Called FVD I believe? Car is incredibly fast!
Came from a tuned built up WRX and this 911 is better in every sense of the imagination. I was into 60k on that Subie, but a major waste inbcomparison. Porsche is 40k more. Subies rock if you don’t upgrade anything but what matters. Don’t expect the car to look like it’s in that price, just it it to engine, brakes, and suspension! Not seats, and stereo’s like I did. Haha. OhI went for this 991.1 not .2 becouse it had on 10,000 km’s, with those upgrades, this is my dream come true.

Great review as usual. I would take a 911 over any supercar. I know the pdk is faster then a manual but I wouldn't buy one unless it had a manual. Turn off all the electronic nannies and hit the road. Older 911's are slower but possesse more charm. At least the 911 still detain the flat 6, Caymans and boxsters have to make do with engines sourced from Subaru. Seriously when the best sports car producer has to have Subaru build engines for them, you know something is definitely wrong in Stuttgart. Definitely go 911 over the Subaru sourced twins.

The problem with Porsches, as with most German cars is the lack of standard equipment, and the huge cost of options. At my local dealer it is rare to find any car with less than 30% of the base price added on in options (many of which are fluff, like leather on the key fob), and some are nearly 100% over the base price. The problem with used Porsches is the cost of maintenance - even routine maintenance like an oil change.

Pretty good review. My car is 2 years older but equipped almost identically to your review car. Mine has the steel sunroof and doesn't squeak or rattle. In fact, I don't have any rattles. I did in my 997. The only difference I'm aware of is the newer cars have rear steer. Does your Cayman have rear steer? It makes a significant handling difference (I'm told).

    • @theredline
      @theredline  6 лет назад

Good to hear! Porsche does not offer rear wheel steering on the 718 Cayman or Boxster. We're guessing its a cost thing or maybe the chassis doesn't need it because it's mid-engine.

I have this car. A PDK is good but you must own a manual. He knows what Porsche ownership is like. ;) It looks new, because the never change the model. Surprising. A 4S and the Turbo is wider. (Cayman....Pffft) No Porsche logo on the headrests :( When the recession hits later this year, (Hopefully) these will come way down in price.
