    It is sad that people get so caught up in the facts and figures on paper. Just because a car can go 0.4 seconds faster from zero to sixty, doesn't mean it's going to be more fun. And to me, that's why we drive cars - because they are fun!

    • @nestogsw9659
      @nestogsw9659 5 месяцев назад

      It's always been like that unfortunately. Before it was stats we got from car magazines but most of us never even drove or rode in many of these cars. Today, I guess it's more accessible but again, it's worse because today's gen has grown up with internet is all stats stats and making judgements way too easily. Too much information!
      Like many things, numbers dont tell the whole story. Take homes for example, you dont judge a home simply by its square footage. I've seen plenty of huge homes that I just dont like and will gladly take a smaller but nicer laid out home thats more to my liking. And everyone is different. In the end, you gotta try it out yourself and see how it makes YOU feel. Don't listen to some stranger or well-known youtuber to tell you what you should and shouldn't like.

    Yet again Matt Farah is one of the very few American journalists to "get it". It's nice to keep seeing reviews that aren't just the usual regurgitating the press pack. It's also nice that the guy infront of the camera can actually appreciate a quality item for what it is rather than just saying it's not as fast as a Corvette and slower, therefore worse. To say those reviews are missing the point would be a huge understatement.

    Sick footage and video. . .once again. I really like the point on the luxury aspect and pricing. I recently drove a brand new seized Continental GT(seized for no insurance) for like 2 miles, and despite it being filled with alot of VW/Audi stuff, the interior and quality feel was incredible. Got back in the 5 series and it felt like a particularly crappy old Kia in comparison.

    Well said. I had a GT3 and it was the subjective points that made it so amazing. The feel, sound, and the way it all just worked together tis what made it so good. The numbers on paper are irrelevant on public roads. You will not feel a .2 second difference in accelration. You will feel how the car works. The only reason I sold it was the only way to really get the best of it was on a track, and once you do that, you realize cars like this just are not as much fun on everyday roads because they are so capable. Not driving them hard is beating on them and driving them to go to dinner is just boring.

    Excellent video! One comment I have: The best value prop for a 911 is one that is 3 years old. Look at the depreciation curve: 30% drop after 3 years and the curve flattens out considerably after that. I bought my 2014 911 CS in 2017 with 4700 miles for $82k and the sticker new was $124K.

    Having owned a 1987 944 S Porsche that I drove for about 10 years, I can say that it was worth it to me for every dime paid. That car literally put a smile on my face every time I drove it, to work and back every day and on weekend driving trips. As others have mentioned, it's the total driving experience - not just 0 to 60 times or max speed in a corner. A neighbor of mine had a Vette that I drove on a couple of occasions, an interesting car but not one that I would substitute for my Porsche. I'm looking at getting a 2012 Carrera S sometime next year and having fun on the canyon and mountain roads here in southern and central California.

    A very interesting point is brought up, value. 911's perhaps before the 991 generation have always struck me as a good value, very usable package but in compromised driving characteristics, good reliability (or so I'm told) and remarkable residuals. But for a 80-90k for a base Carrera 350 HP does seem slightly, let's say steep. Power certainly doesn't equate to over all superiority as Matt explains but 350 hp for hundered grand doesn't seem quite right.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  11 лет назад +8

      The Porsche Sport Exhaust is the only option on the 911 that I would consider absolutely mandatory. I would rather have that than an aftermarket exhaust, because you can guarantee it will be drone free and be covered under warranty. Love the pops.

    • @naperking
      @naperking 11 лет назад +1

      Awesome, thanks for the advice! My dealer told me they're able to retrofit the PSE system, and I found that its cost is comparable to some aftermarket systems. The main benefit of going aftermarket is the claimed horsepower, but any small gains would be outweighed by the risk of voiding a warranty.

    Great review, and great channel Matt. At the end of the day, this 911 is still twice the price of the '14 Vette and in 4 years you will be able to pick one up for $70-$80K. Let's not forget how great the new Vette is and how much you raved about it in your review. My problem with the 911 is exactly what you said about it in your F-Type review, it's essentially the same car year after year in terms of design. At least the F-Type & Vette have eye-catching new designs, IMO.

    My father currently leases a 991 Carrera S in solid black as his weekend car. The only add ons he got were the PDK, Sport chrono package, and the upgraded stereo. Off the floor that car would've cost him about 110,000. Is it a bargain to own one of these? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But they're quality cars and frankly, having driven my father's 911, I wouldn't mind doing the lease if its just a weekend car.

      It is not literally a race car. I don't think you know what "literally" means.

      nphung01 "literally" would be the most likely word given the spelling and context

    For someone who isn't specifically tracking their car, wouldn't the Panamera always be the better choice? At a similar price point for the turbo, similar refinement, similar attention to detail, and a usable back seat, is there really any reason to not buy the Panamera outside of buying the car for track use?

      It's a much bigger, much heavier car. It's not a sports car.

    Matt, did the Corvette that you and Chris used for this comparo had the Z51 pack?

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  11 лет назад +2

      It had Z51 wheels, but I could have sworn it didn't have the Z51 package. It felt so sloppy and awful compared to the Z51/Mag Ride/Comp Exhaust car I drove on TST.

    • @GT-gt4bf
      @GT-gt4bf 11 лет назад

      That what I was afraid of. Who the f..k at GM gave you guys that car? Base suspension and auto!

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  11 лет назад

      GT7786 We don't have a choice sometimes. In many circumstances, it's "we need a 3-series, or we need a Corvette" and based on our required dates we have to deal with what's available. At the time we shot that, there were only 3 C7's in the LA fleets, and magazines had the other 2 checked out. Way it goes sometimes.

    • @GT-gt4bf
      @GT-gt4bf 11 лет назад

      I know that you guys can't control those things, I'm blaming GM. What I mean is that the configuration shouldn't exist for review testing. Anyway, s..t happens.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  11 лет назад +1

      GT7786 Well, on the one hand, no I don't think that configuration should exist for reviews, but on the other hand, if the Manual/Z51/Mag/Comp is amazing, but the base model is terrible, shouldn't people know that? I mean a C7 with all that stuff is $67k, but everyone talks about how C7's are "only $51k!" but $51k gets you a pretty shitty C7.... feel me?

    You talked about that "sandbaggy as hell 4 second 0-60," is that the same deal in the Cayman? I've kinda been looking at them even though they're pretty much at the VERY top of my price range, but if I could find a deal on a used one I think it would be pretty sweet to own one of those compared to the other cars I'm looking at!

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  11 лет назад +1

      I don't know, I was basing that statement based on Porsche's quoted numbers compared to what magazine tests are getting. You'd have to do a little research and see if that applies to the Cayman too.

    The early model year 997 911 carrera's are coming down to 35-40k price range for a good example. What would be a good choice? The base carrera or the e92 M3? I don't really care about 0-60 or 1/4 mile times. I just want a car that feels like its wired to my brain when I drive it.

    • @The305Garage

      I recently picked up a 39k mile 2007 Carrera in that price range you mentioned with some decent options. I test drove a few M3's and compared to the 997, I can tell you to forget about the M3.

      Listen to the TheSmokingTire podcast, all the guys were saying the 7MT was horrible and felt like Porsche just put in an intentionally bad manual to push the PDK on people. You want great shifter feel from a porsche get the Cayman S which still comes with the great 6 speed
