- When Silverchair broke in 1995 with their debut album Frogstomp, everyone began comparing their lead singer Daniel Johns to Nirvana's Kurt Cobain. Here's the full story which i tell in my own words detailing the events around both bands.

The Silverchair Podcast 'Too Much Of Not Enough' highlights just how badly Daniel was bullied after Frogstomp dropped.
His parents wanted him to continue in normal education and he was routinely beaten after school to the point where his anxiety made him a recluse and ultimately caused his eating disorder.
Really sad for a 16 year old kid to have so much but so little at the same time. Too much of not enough even!
Ultimately though he's a genius composer and a great singer. Maybe not as raw as Kurt but generally way beyond Kurt in terms of natural talent. Kurt just hit that gold vein though.
Both guys are insanely gifted.

The cool thing about silverchair is they lived a life every teenager dreams. They were just 14-15 years old when they came up with thier original numbers and got famous. Making own songs, doing live shows just imagine how fantastic this is!

Knock it off, dude. Take a moment to listen to these kids. They sound very different, much more like Pearl Jam, STP and Soundgarden. They're amazing without even considering they were famous while being 14 and 15 years old, when Kurt and company only became succesful by their mid 20's.

Wait a moment! Wait one dag gone minute! He was married to Natalie Imbruglia?!?! She was the only woman I've ever had a crush on (like a famous person crush) I think I was a senior in high school-starting college when "Torn" came out. I didn't know anything about her, but loved that song (I admit it, even though I am mostly a 90s punk/rock/metal fan; it's a good song!)

Daniel looked like Kurt but Silverchair’s first couple of albums were definitely more influenced (musically) by Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Silverchair and Nirvana are major influences of mine, their album freak show had the most similarities with a Nirvana-esque vibe but they totally developed their own sound throughout their career. Blonde hair aside Johns is a very different musician than Cobain.
Courtney would definitely be an internet troll back then if she had the avenues we do today. As much as I want to be a Negative Creep about her I think it’s more important to be positive about Kurt’s history. Channels like this are invaluable for untold information and forgotten treasures.Thank you for your videos!

Not weird at all,it would be weird if the media had’ve treated them with an ounce of respect for their music and style. Right!!! The mosh pits of Soundgarden and Faith No More were a walk in the park compared to the Silverchair mosh pits!!!!!! Within 10 minutes of them coming out onto the stage I had my hair pulled by someone behind me and as I turned to tell them to rack off I got pulled down by a shit ton of teenagers!!! I was 17 and they were starting to trample me- a TALL friend of mine had to pull me up and out!! Great times!!!!!!!!

Not only did they not sound like each other, it was disrespectful putting down Daniel Johns' talent down with dumb nicknames, because he proved to be a bigger musical prodigy than Kurt Cobain had time to become. I'm not a huge fan of Daniel Johns' recent career, but damn, the guy has transcended styles and instruments, he's gone all over the place and good for him.

@@furythruster4794 he's kind of right though. The musicality of Daniel is unsurpassed, as a vocalist as a guitarist and as a general musician. Especially given the age he did all that. Plus he's also technically a lot better. Both have the same level of raw genuinity that they so well expressed. And Kurt is just the OG of that. That's why Kurt is the known legend

Grunge influenced them but this being an Australian band, to us they were just typical Aussie kids. Long hair was everywhere on boys and young men during the 90's and blonde is a common hair colour here so...

Silverchair was my first concert as well I believe in 96 or 97! :) I was about 13 or 14 years old and they were my fav band at the time! I got to meet all of them the 3rd time I seen them live on the Neon Ballroom tour, except for Daniel because at the time he had bad social anxiety and right after the show would either hide backstage or on the tour bus. It really bummed me out I couldn't meet him because at the time I was OBSESSED with him! LOL! I was convinced him and I would be the next Kurt and Courtney! LOL!

Nirvana is my favorite band but I really like the first 3 albums of Silverchair, and it's amazing how young those guys were and the music they were making. Never saw Silverchair as "Nirvana in pyjamas" or whatever.
Daniel will be Silverchair with their own music 👏🏻 they never meant to be Nirvana or try to imitate Kurt.. just sayin...

I just want to say that Nirvana was the kind of band that separates from the others on the same style of music; Nirvana is one of those great bands of rock and roll of all time.
@@santiagoalonso7257 Oh thank God someone else who feels like I do! I like Nirvana, but not as much as the other 'grunge' bands we all know. I think their music is much simpler than their contemporaries'. Some will say that was the genius of Kurt Cobain: He was good at creating simple and elegant melodies.
I dunno, maybe. I know that when they got really popular in the early 90s, they were THE band that all the cool kids, goth kids, whatever, at school talked about. So many Nirvana shirts. And for that reason, I never got into them. They seemed 'too popular' and so I turned to Soundgarden, Alive in Chains, Tool, etc.
I have the luxury of NOT listening to Nirvana a million times when I was a kid; now that I'm older, and I have definitely been getting into their music more. I doubt anyone cares. But I have a bigger appreciation of their stuff now that I can experience it on my own terms, without trying to fit in with the kids at school were were trying so hard to "not fit in" 😉
For some reason, some of those 'kids' wearing Nirvana shirts would trade them in for Marilyn Manson shirts a few years later. Gulp. Cringe.

Second álbum Freak Show, has a some clear nirvana resembles, imposible not to think they werent influenced by nirvana.... Listen "Lie to me" its a perfect rippoffmix beetween "territorial pissings" and "tourettes". "No association" its like "Milk It"...
In my opinión Silverchair were a good band until "Neón Ballroom" but with "Diorama" and "Young Modern" they were incredible.

Daniel literally acted very similarly on stage and during a pretty memorable performance wore the same clothes as Kurt. His iconic ratty sweater from the live at the paramount show. Pretty obvious that while his music was more like a talentless version of sound garden, style wise in other areas he was uncanny.

I had the opposite problem with my band ... we loved nirvana and did sound similar ... but I’m a chubby bearded guy so I always heard I looked like Shaun Morgan and seethed comparisons lol

Daniel johns and silverchair were trying to look like nirvana and were influenced by the grunge movement just like 99% of kids all around the world at that time, they can deny that all they want but that was just the reality. Silverchair found their own sound from Neon Ballroom onward. Silverchair was a special case because they were extremely talented from a very young age and basically got to live the dream of any teenager, being a rock star. As adults, silverchair grew musically 100% and became one of the best. I hope that they actually comeback because daniel jhons solo career has been really bad. Still, daniel johns is an extremely rare talent and the world of rock n roll is waiting for his comeback now that all the “grunge” legends are dead except by eddie vedder.
Bush was influenced by the alternative rock movement of the 90s but they were a little different too. Basically any band of the 90s was influence by nirvana.

I like and respect all different eras of silverchair tho. Its mind blowing that they were at such a high level at 15 years old.

Bands like Poison, INXS, and many others were kicked to the curb by big record labels when grunge came out. I remember an interview I saw with Bret Micheals when he said he went into the big wigs office and his bands giant photo had been replaced by Nirvana behind his desk.
Big hair bands were instantly gone. Overnight.

Aussie here! Silverchair were huge and for a few 15 year olds. They deserve their respect. If anyone actually knows the full catalogue of work, they would laugh at the comparison
I think Daniel johns is a very under estimated artist and as an Australian that was a young pre teen when they broke- definitely deserved.

My band plays older Silverchair songs and Nirvana songs, they are nothing alike in my opinion, they have similarities but alot diffferent in a lot of ways too, one difference is dave grohl's beats are a little more technically and alot more punk.
People only compare them to each other because they both have blonde hair. Silverchair were in their prime with albums such as Neon Ballroom and Diorama. Daniel has a great voice and could actually sing on those albums.

Kurt and Daniel both had famous and talented wives. Daniel married the adorable singer / actress Natalie Imbruglia. They got together in 1999 and divorced in 2008.
One married a talented artist. The other married a groupie.

I think "Ana's song" seems a bit influenced by Nirvana. The physical similarities don't go far beyond having the same haircolour and a similar haircut (at least at a certain point of time, both changed their haircuts and haircolour multiple times). There is absolutely no similarity in terms of face. Kurt was more of a delicate, thin type of guy while Daniel Johns is more of an average type of guy in terms of body type an thin-/thickness of features.
They both had the same roots - the Beatles

The Gavin Rossdale/Kurt Cobain comparisons are so off. Even back then in 1994, I thought the comparisons were way off. Although using Albini to produce Razorblade Suitcase didn’t help things. But, it was also a “sign of the times” that every grunge or post grunge era band had similarities. It was simply a popular formula at the time.
Instead, you should do Daniel Johnston vs Kurt Cobain.
I like to think Kurt would of been blown away by silverchair in the later years if not be influenced some by daniels style . Kurt wanted to move away from the Grunge sound and take his music in a new direction and the record company david geffen wanted them to stay the same sound if not return back to that never mind sound . and In one interview Kurt expressed how much he loved new wave music and electronics and i think he ultimately would of took his sound in that ooingo boing / new wave sound eventually if he had lived . maybe alienate a shit ton of his fans along the way . Daniel johns evolution in music is almost completely different with each album . frogstomp had that peal jam sound , freakshow had a more of a soundgarden / weezer sound , neon ballroom had a completely different sound that was unique but similar to some late alternative rock like ( live , mercy playground , oasis ) diorama took a more evolved change from neon ballroom and young modern sounded like a prozac filled happy album version of diorama .

The Corporate rock labels panicked and signed many bands to fill the Nirvana void. By no fault of their own, they had talent. Listen to "Lie to me" by Silverchair and "tourette's" by Nirvana...
Slave , Off Freakshow and I don't know anything by Mad Season . are very similar too , being kids you gotta give them a pass tho i feel. Johns eventually found his identity tho and is a talented dude.

I had a boyfriend who I finished in 90 because he looked exactly like kurt. Bleached Bob hair Levi’s ripped a long sleeve tee under a short sleeve one, and he swore he wasn’t copying and didn’t look like kurt. Every young nirvana wannabe did this because they knew kurt hated copycats
