  • Australian rock band Silverchair broke onto the scene in 1995 with their debut album Frogstomp and were immediately compared to grunge bands from Seattle, most of all Nirvana.
And in this video i go in-depth on both bands talking about their songs and their history. How Silverchair started as Nirvana ended. How Johns was compared to Cobain and much more!

Daniel's vocals were unique and special in their own way and were not like Kurt's vocals! Also, they had a lot more influences and inspirations, other than Nirvana. You can hear how much Silverchair's music was changing through the albums. Nirvana was only a part of their influences and for not a longer period of time. Silverchair has always respected Nirvana, as I do, too. But they hated the fact that most people compared them each other in an incorrect way. It's no different than The Monkees getting big after The Beatles because the industry wanted to find "the next Beatles". Would we know who Silverchair is if Kurt Cobain never made it big? For me, anything Daniel Johns has been involved with or has done on his own has all been golden to me. I love everything that comes out of his creative mind. People are entitled to their own opinions, but to understand why Daniel made all the choices he had, The Book Of Daniel by Jeff Apter covers absolutely everything. Lest we not forget that he is in the studio with Boom Tish making album #9 right now (as he includes Aerial Love EP as #6, Talk as #7, and DREAMS as #8). He has also worked with Slumberjack, Tove Lo, What So Not, 360, Jake Meadows, and various others! He even helped write and score a short film (My Mind's Own Melody) and was commissioned by Qantas to score a piece for an ad campaign. This man is a nonstop creative, and a large amount of American public that know about and/or idolise that era of silverchair seem to overlook his accomplishments for the sake of their own desire that they wish Daniel didn't evolve past the music he was making as a bloody teenager!
Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just be aware of the facts before anyone decides to spew vile words about him and his recent endeavours. :)

Frogstomp and Neon Ballroom are amazing albums. I got them both at a yardsale at my mom's friends house as a kid. Lol he was growing bud in his backyard and we were shitty kids(my sister an her boyfriend an I) so we went to the backyard to smoke cigarettes and while we were back there I looked across the backyard and laughed at how the plants looked so much like marijuana plants, then we walked over closer to them just to find it it actually was! Lol we filled our cigarette cellophane wrappers with as much as we could. It was in the middle of summer so we had bud(after it dried out) and great new music to listen to. That was when I was 13 (2003). I also snagged pearl jams Vitology that day. I remember calling it violinology at first while i was flipping through albums cause the letters where kinda distorted at first glance so I read it wrong.

      @@reidood Nah man I honestly don't.
There's always liable to be similarities in songs bc every song ever recorded automatically lends itself to others to tweak or modify. In this case though it is something that has never greatly stood out to me in the more than 20yrs since Freak Show.
I've heard the comparison quite a bit tho, so that means I'm probably wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.
Also I've never fully understood the comparison of the two bands outside of the appearance aspect.

@@schandmaske Totally fair man, I'm always happy to have a discussion/debate that is civil even if we disagree. :) For the most part, I don't think they ever really sounded much like Nirvana aside from "Lie To Me" and were compared to them for most of the reasons Dudeman stated (Three piece, lead singer with blonde hair like Kurt, plays a similar hard rock/grunge style etc.). Honestly, I thought Frogstomp was MUCH more influenced by Pearl Jam and that both Frogstomp and Freak Show are clearly influenced by the "grunge" sound in general (Neon Ballroom to a lesser extent) which is why I always found it funny when Daniel Johns would act surprised/pissed about the comparisons. I get the Helmet comparisons too with the heavy/groovy riffs of their earlier stuff. Thanks for the compliments on the videos, these are two of my biggest loves in the world are Nirvana (and music in general and The Legend Of Zelda (and retro games in general). Cheers!

But yes most definitely there was a huge PJ influence for Frogstomp.
People shouldn't knock them though, they did a remarkable job for a few kids (babies really) and they had a radical evolution releasing some beautiful and more mature music over the years.
I get that it's not for everybody though.
And even with the sad state of affairs in music right now there are still many good bands giving us good music if you look in the right places. (Greta Van Fleet, Royal Blood, Highly Suspect, The Lemon Twigs etc..) all of which I'm sure anybody with a finely tuned ear would be able to hear pieces and similarities of all of our past favourites in there somewhere 😉.

My reaction to Daniel at first sight in an MTV interview was "oh my god, Kurt Cobain isn't even cold in his grave yet and these record company ghouls dug him up and cloned him!" But that was very unfair. The next time I heard Silverchair was the MTV awards. Daniel unleashed this Primal Scream at the end of Pure Massacre, my jaw just dropped and the MTV VJ, her jaw dropped and she said 'Wow!'
And that was the thing about Daniel, he was a winner. When he had the opportunity, like the MTV Awards, he seized the moment and knocked that shit out! The same at MSG on the Chili Peppers tour. 16 years old, he could have choked but he knocked it out and stunned the Chili Peppers crowd. Not knocking KC at all, he's an eternal genius!!!! But Daniel's 'teen angst' was authentic because he was actually a teenager. Then he grew up. Speaking of hypotheticals, too bad we never saw what Cobain was doing when he was 16 years old.
DJ was a better singer than Cobain or even Eddie Vedder, or anybody in rock, imo. Really, the only singers I would rank better than Daniel Johns in any genre are at the Aretha Franklin-Labelle-Bonnie Raitt level.
The twisted thing was Kurt Cobain's wife made a vicious statement about Daniel copying her husband when she was the one milking Cobain's death, not Daniel. So she crashed the Madonna interview on the same MTV awards show. She looked high on smack and Madonna just got up and left. Silverchair had actually earned their spot on the MTV Awards, but she was just crashing because she was Kurt Cobain's wife. That taught me a lot about life.

The record companies were striking Grunge gold in 95 making money off Kurts death, they were propped up for sure but as they matured they expounded originality. Loved the chair back then. I covered their songs as a lead singer often. Good old fashioned bar music for the time

IMO there was 0 comparison to Nirvana sonically, well...at least on Frogstomp. It's the only album of theirs I have listened to over and over again. Absolute masterpiece! I know you gotta "grow and evolve" your sound, but goddammit! If they could have kept that raw power and grit they had on Frogstomp...🤯

Listen to the actual music. There are no Silverchair songs that are even close musically. Guitar riffs, chord types and progressions. Yet alone the way the band progressed through the albums. Fair video. Nice work.

I still thoroughly enjoy all Neon Ballroom and Diorama. and it’s 2020! I do believe the other bands helped to give them the push!

It said something about the name Silverchair was supposed to be derived from Nirvana's "Sliver"
.and Youami "Berlin chair" .. I always thought it was "Sliver" and Alice in Chains "Angry Chair"

I've never ever felt Silverchair sounded like NIrvana. I've been listening to them for around 2 years and damn their songs are simply beautiful. Their songs like Freak, Tomorrow, Anthem of the year, and the whole Diorama album are so so cool! Wish they stuck along for more time. Hopefully, in the future, we can see a reunion and kick back the music scene!

If your a fan of the Seattle bands you need to read Mark Lanegan's book from the Sreaming Trees. He was good friends with Kurt, Layne, Chris Cornell, Dylan Carlson, all those guys. The book is on Audible too. It's called Sing backwards and weep. Awesome book!
