The credit scene at the end is simply Rammstein's way of showing respect for everyone who worked on this mega project. There is nothing wierd about it. On the contrary, I think it's great that the people who really do all the work are highlighted. If you look at the different settings, how incredibly much work the mask work alone already had. This is absolute madness.

    Hi, I'm from Germany.
Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitarrs.
A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the mother of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a Goddess or Joan of Arc.
The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too.
The battle of the Teutoburg forrest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike).
That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history.
The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees.
The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of Emperor Germanicus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees).
In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle.
After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background).
The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion.
The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket.
This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain.
A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp.
The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses.
The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man.
The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification.
Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp).
The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).
My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams.
Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example.
The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events.
PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany.
PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages.
In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it).
But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war.
The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened.
PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too.
PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII.
PPPPPS: My interpretation of the glass coffin is Little Snow White in space, like I wrote before.
PPPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet.
    Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
    a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
    b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
    c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄

"Deutschland" is just an epic masterpiece! Maybe the best song I´ve ever heard and watched... 10/10! The outro sounds familliar because it´s very much like "Hier kommt die Sonne" from Rammstein.

  • @juwi8135

The beautiful actress plays the role of Germania, the personification of Germany. Sometimes she is powerful, weak, the victim or the bad guy (e.g. Nazi uniform). The video shows instances of the not so great history of Germany using symbols and metaphors.
The song is about the impossibility to completely love a country with such a bad past. "Germany, I want to love you and damn you" "Germany, I cannot give you my love". Most Germans are not able to be patriotic because of that past.
I love my home, my friends and family, the safe place to live, I see the value of the German welfare state etc. and the freedom we have to say whatever and to be whoever we want to. However, for me, it is not necessary to run around, waving a flag and showing patriotism wherever I go. It is a more silent and less emotional love and appreciation for the Germany of today, the good, the bad and everthing inbetween.

I understand why the video could be seen as distracting if you're solely focusing on the music.
I personally think the images used they way they were, made it all work. I kind of get lost in the music and images. It crashes like a wave and drowns me in it. It's a very layered work of art with huge meaning behind it. It is much akin to "This is America" by Childish Gambino.
My maternal Grandmother is the reason for my fascination with Germany. She taught me basic German and would sing to me in German. She is a generation or so removed from WW2 and the family was cauterized because of it. Her mother left Germany in the late 20s early 30s. Her older brothers even fought against Germany for the US.
But I do digress, great review as always. Love where the channel is and where the channel is headed and I am glad to be a part of it.

The piano piece at the end is the version of "Sonne" (Sun) by Rammstein. And if you think of it, it fits perfectly. The sun gives live, however, if you reach for it, it will destroy you and burn you. There is (re)birth and complete destruction in the mv. "Wir (wer hoch steigt, der wird tief fallen) " - we (whoever rises high, reaches too far, will fall very low)". For my interpretation, combining the outro Sonne and reaching too far, you can use mythology. A lot of art and literature is based on the classics of ancient times (Roman and Greek) and interpreted using the knowledge of ancient literature and intertextuality (university level, at least) .Therefore, I do not consider that approach too random.
The following, I just copied from Wikipedia, and shortened it a bit.
Phaethon was said to be the son of the sun god Helios.
He asked his father for some proof that would demonstrate his relationship with the sun. When the god promised to grant him whatever he wanted, he insisted on being allowed to drive the sun chariot for a day. According to some accounts Helios tried to dissuade Phaethon, telling him that even Zeus was not strong enough to steer these horses, but reluctantly kept his promise. Placed in charge of the chariot, Phaethon was unable to control the horses. In some versions, the Earth first froze when the horses climbed too high, but when the chariot then scorched the Earth by swinging too near, Zeus decided to prevent disaster by striking it down with a thunderbolt. Phaethon fell to earth and was killed in the process.

@@stephenmiller195 Thank you for reading that long text (and maybe the next one ;-) ) ... I consider this pure art, a masterpiece, lyrics and pictures. Therefore, I give value to this by analysing this "Rammstein picture" as much as possible. I love the effort that was used.
My understanding of art is that it does not have to be pretty. You can look at a painting of a flower, you think, that this is a pretty painting/print to put on your wall. But the picture of the flower won't change your live. Art can be ugly, and you might not wish to see it, however, true art will challange your mind, remove boarders and the narrow places of your mindset. That is the responsibilty of art, in my opinion.

    Hey, another german here :)
For me this song is very close to my heart, its represnting the more "complex" relationship between germans and germany extremly well.
The Images, lyrics, the pasing ... everything is a telling the "story" in a poetic way i extremly like.
I guess the "core" of this song is NOT easy to understand with all its references ...
The "translations" are missing SOO much subcontext ... im always sad how "bad" they are ...
It is NOT a "song" it is more a "Visual - akustic- poetic"- Masterpiece ...
A few examples for the lyrics
    Überheblich => ~arrogant
    Überlegen => Superior || Thinking
Übernehmen => Take over || overreach || overdo it
übergeben => hand over || vomit
    Überraschen => to surprise
überfallen => ambush || assault (with more poetic freedom even => fall over something)
    übermächtig => overpowerd
überflüssig => superflous || redundant || or even in a more poetic way "more than just rich"
All this is lost ... via translation and its realy sad :(

I am German and like this song very much. It is one of my favorite Rammstein songs.
I watched the video many times and spotted each time other little details I missed before. In my opinion it is one of the most powerful songs ever.
You see Germania always with her black, red and gold the colors of our flag. The earliest scenes show the Varus battle (Romans against Germans) 9 AD. Themes of the video are mostly the hard times Germany had and thats why Till / Rammstein has problems to love it.

Haha, love your honesty about the video. I love the video. But me being German and having a more close relationship to what is being displayed and going on in the video, it makes sense the way it is structured. For someone not familiar with the history, yes I can see why it might be confusing and distracting. The video for me is a masterpiece and the song itself speaks volumes to me personally. Love them (Rammstein) or hate them for this video and song, I will always be grateful for them not shying away from complex and sensitive matters. Most Germans do have a love/hate relationship with the Vaterland.

The video's symbolism in it's order parallels the implications of the particular phrasing of the lyrics at that point in the song. It is pretty overwhelming though, I get that. The intended audience on this one definitely were German people with a more or less profound understanding of the country and area's history.

Lyrically, this song reminds me a lot of Bertolt Brecht's poem "O Deutschland, bleiche Mutter" ("O Germany, pale mother"), which is inscribed on the memorial at Mauthausen concentration camp, also expressing the conflicted feeling towards one's homeland that has committed atrocities, and how it affects the "children", following generations, of that nation.

Hey David, thanks for this great review that I just came across now. As a German who loved your Babymetal reviews I had to at some point.
I suppose most Germans, especially Rammstein fans, tend to focus on the MV because of its rich imagery and references to Germany's history. It was refreshing to hear your detailed musical analysis.

I've been listening to Rammstein since their beginnings. For the first time I was at a Clawfingers concert that made Rammstein a lead band and I did not believe what I heard and saw. After a few years, history turned around and the Clawfingers formed the lead band Rammstein. I have been and will also be at all their concerts here in the Czech Republic. In my opinion, this band has the best stage show in the world. Pyro effects are invented by the band's singer, who is also very interested in their production. Till has a very special and unique voice without vibration at the end. The lyrics and themes of the songs are very thoughtful, deep and make you think. The band founded a new music genre NDH (Neue Deutsche Härte). If you are a fan of them and you are at their concert, you are incredibly excited, happy, tanned by fire, completely wet and deaf for other days. You get the best music experience in the world. :-) Thanks for the video, check it out!

Germany & Germans are just smart in general. I've been there 2 times and the second time I gained a true appreciation of their way of life. In Germany everything is almost the best it could ever be. A very cool and interesting place with fantastic food and amazing history. The beer is good, the women are beautiful, and their technology is fantastic. I'm not a beer drinker normally but I begrudgingly went to Octoberfest in 2019 and was made a "true believer". I've also seen Rammstein twice too....a very awesome band.

Great reaction! Awesome song, and the video is a history lesson throughout 2000 years… the lady represents Germania, fight for freedom vs ancient romans, middle ages, knights and monks, the Hindenburg catastrophe in Lakehurst, the 1920s, two dictatorships, Nazi time (fascism), burning of books, concentration camps, East Germany (socialism), the 70s terrorism, so many images… 👍🤘

    Hi David,
German is my first language - so as a native pls let me explain as concise as possible many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made as English is not my first language :-)
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history.
Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII). The standard I guess refers to a relic which was part of the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation ("Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" - the conglomerate of mostly German territories which was ruled by a emperor elected by the highest ranking nobles of the realm and persisted from the 10th century until 1806). This relic, the Lance of Longinus, is dated back to the 8th century was said to contain in it's tip one of the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus and was supposed to make the any army that bears it invincible. It can still be seen today in a museum called "die Schatzkammer" (the treasure chamber) in Vienna,/Austria the city where I live ;-).
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s.
Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table).
The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded from the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times.
The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people.
In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany. Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history:
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.) Here now the lyrics (copied from the internet):
    [Verse 1]
You (You have, you have, you have, you have)
Have cried a lot (Cried, cried, cried, cried)
Separated in spirit (Separated, separated, separated, separated)
United in heart (United, united, united, united)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
Have been together for so long (You are, you are, you are, you are)
Your breath's cold (So cold, so cold, so cold, so cold)
The heart in flames (So hot, so hot, so hot, so hot)
You (You can, you can, you can, you can)
    I (I know, I know, I know, I know)
We (We are, we are, we are, we are)
You (You stay, you stay, you stay, you stay)
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
    Germany - your breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany!
    [Verse 2]
I (You have, you have, you have, you have)
I never want to leave you (You cry, you cry, you cry, you cry)
One can love you (You love, you love, you love, you love)
And want to hate you (You hate, you hate, you hate, you hate)
    Presumptuous, superior
    Take over, hand over/puke
    Surprise, invade
    Germany, Germany above everything
    [Chorus]
Germany - my heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
Germany - your breath is cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany - your love
Is a curse and a blessing
    Germany - my love
    I can't give you
    Germany!
    Germany!
    [Bridge]
    You
    I
    We
    All of you
    You (superior/overpowering, unnecessary)
I (Übermenschen (translates to “superior humans” - a term the Nazis implicitly used for themselves as the calles other races “Untermenschen” - translating to “inferior humans”), weary)
We (The higher you climb, the further you fall)
    You (Germany, Germany above everything)
    [Chorus]
Germany - your heart in flames
Want to love and damn you
    Germany - my breath's cold
So young, and yet so old
    Germany - your love

The perfect hint or "easteregg" in this video is Germania itself. She is black because with her dark skin (black), red lipstick (only in parts of the video where it fits) and the golden armor, she represents the german flag - black/red/gold.
A pretty good example of how Rammstein is thinking about their music and videos and what they want to tell others who dig a little deeper into the rabbit hole. In general the colours black/red/gold are the most dominant in this video. In scenes where the german flag under the monarchical regime with the "German Kaiser" (World War 1 and before) the dominating colours are black/white/red, as it was before the current one.
8.8 points is fair, because it's not perfect. But when you split it into video and music, the video itself is very close to 10 if you understand and see all the things happening there. It's a compressed version of the old "Germanen" and the Romans till the possible future. The cuts and jumps might be de disturbing and distracting, but it follows a strict path.
Anyway, I enjoyed your perspective as a musician and found some "flaws" and also nice parts.
Keep going, I like it and maybe I'll watch a few videos more to find out if it's worth to subscribe :-)

The low chugs during the second verse are just repeating triplets, with the 2nd triplet left out each time, i think. It really enhanced the verse and gives it that inch of aggression.
Ooh, and the entire song is in D, with the mentioned palm mutes being a a low C. Rammstein often uses Drop C as a Tuning, more so than any other.

    *Strange...*
... the - by far - the best analysis of all about this song.
It's very beneficial that someone doesn't interrupt the video every few seconds for meaningless talk and drives the viewer to white heat and crazy with it (with most of the others I switched already off after a few minutes because of it)!
But in return, there was practically no reaction / no response to the music *video,* except for the credits - and the assessment of this is also still negative, without recognizing that the guys from Rammstein express their appreciation for their work by naming everyone involved.
In addition: Since the video was shot completely in the style of a real high budged film, the credits are also to be seen as a logical consequence of this concept.
Every movie has credits of this kind - and so one couldn't be missing here either.
    *Conclusion:*
Great analysis of the musical part (there someone has an idea of the subject matter songwriting), but irritating disinterest in the *video.*

The video needs to be seen as a kind of critical review of Germany and its history. Finally, the black lady does represent "Germania" - a kind of personalization of Germany through the different violent periods in German history including symbols and metaphors that might be more familiar for native Germans.
In fact, if you are aware of this and know the Chorus ("Germany - my heart in flames,/Will love and condemn you/ Germany - your breath cold/ So young - and yet so old") this video may make more sense.

I think the final score you gave the song is pretty ironic. The number 88 has a very bad connotation in Germany, which is why you can't put it on your license plate for example. If you look at the 8th letter of the alphabet, you might see why 😂. No criticism, I just think its funny (especially for this song)🤘🏻.

The video depicts a large part of German history:
The colored woman represents Germania, the "mother" of the German nation, and is, therefore, to be understood as a symbolic figure.
Snow White from the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale lies in the glass coffin ...
... and this was taken from her music video for the song "Sonne".
By the way, the piano part of the outro is the melody of the keyboard part from the song "Sun".
This would be the short-form for those who are too lazy to reading.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For eager and inquisitive readers the "long version" follows:
The scenes with the Rammstein-guys as Roman soldiers depicts the battle against the Roman occupiers to regain the sovereignty of "Germania", in which the Germanic peoples tried to take back their territory, and taught their enemies fear, by cruelly massacring enemy soldiers (including already fallen ones), and what the actress of "Germania" with the beheading of Rammstein's frontman Till Lindemann is symbolizing.
With the bodies and body parts, the forests were then "decorated" as a deterrent by them.
This is followed by the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster - the devastating explosion of what was then the largest zeppelin in the world (the Hindenburg) in 1937 in Lakehurst, New Jersey in the USA.
The fight scene shows the working class at the beginning of WW1, and the scene in which even the (German shepherd-) dogs wear gas masks, the WW1, where gas masks were even worn by deployed animals (messenger dogs & horses).
The rocket is the famous V2 rocket and represents Nazi Germany's technical superiority at the time ...
... and at the same time shows the killing of concentration camp prisoners who were forced by them to manufacture this rocket.
The different identifications of the concentration camp prisoners are (also) frighteningly detailed (from the left to the right at the gallows):
A pink triangle for homosexuals, the Star of David for Jews, the double triangle for homosexual jews, and a red triangle for a political inmate.
The book burnings of the Nazis stand for the destruction of all ideas that did not correspond to the National Socialist ideology.
Then follows a representation of *"East* Germany" (controlled by Russia - *DDR* - Deutsche Demokratische Republik = GDR - "German Democratic Republic", founded after 1945 - after the lost WW2 - until 1989, and founded at the same time as the *BRD* - Bundes Republik Deutschland = Federal Republic Germany).
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Since 1989 the communistic "GDR" does no longer exists and East Germany is part of the "West" again, as it was the case before the end of WW2.
Germany is now "complete" again - also because *Michail Gorbatschow* made it possible - and also "West Germany" does now longer exist since then, it´s again just still *Germany*.
And also the good old "Made in Germany" is again the one and only sign for brands of best quality worldwide - "Made in GDR" ( as a sign for *scrap...* ) is as dead as the communistic part of Germany.
And that is *good* as it is now.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Subsequently, Rammstein represents the time of the German terror organization *RAF * (Red Army Fraction) in West Germany, during which the boys embody the hardcore of the so-called "Baader-Meinhoff Group", which symbolically takes "Germania" hostage (= Germany in the hands of left-wing terror).
The founders and leaders of the RAF were *Andreas Baader* and *Ulrike Meinhoff * (hence the name that the RAF got from the investigative authorities), Till Lindemann plays in it (in the pure male band) *the female terrorist Meinhoff* - and once again has visibly fun acting completely against his "testosterone bomb - image".
The repeatedly faded in (thinner) scanner-like beams "scan" German history (age of electronic archiving), while the massive red beam of light symbolizes the red (guiding) thread through German history.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Scenes with exclusively symbolic character:
The guzzling-orgy of the clergy represents the insatiable greed of the church of this time (s), whose representatives did not get their throats full enough and reveled in abundance during the simple people were starving - so the "Germania" is not eaten itself, but everything takes place ON her, while she has to watch helplessly as the church princes themselves (of course with sausages and sauerkraut ...) eat your fill...
...under her - "imprisoned" - the enslaved, poverty-stricken population.
The "Germania" with a "pack" of German shepherds on a leash - the dog breed as a (further) symbol for "absolutely German".
The puppies towards the end of the video are, by the way, dogs of the breed "Leonberger".
This breed of a dog almost died out during WW2 - and thus almost became the "collateral damage" of the racial madness of the Nazis.
With the decision to have the "Germania" embodied by a *colored* actress, Rammstein probably (also) wanted to set an example and all the idiots, with their eternal ones allegations of fascism and racism against the band, get a "kick in the nuts."
And at the same time, in the same breath, the guys gave all the racist neo-Nazi freaks a lesson who still don't get it t have that Rammstein *not* belong on the list of their Nazi bands.
And if this measure leads to the fact that the neo-Nazi faction - if *at all* to be found among the fan base - then turns away from the band, *none* band member will cry a tear after them.
( Over the years, the guys made often enough clearly in interviews that they want have nothing to do with right-wing ideas *at all* ).
With a lot of imagination, one could even interpret a *double meaning* in their choice of a dark-skinned actress as the "Germania", namely ...
... black skin, red lips, gold jewelry, and -clothing: * black-red-gold * = the colors of the German *national flag.*
In view of the ingenuity in the production of what is probably the most extraordinary, laborious, and expensive video in music history (as also in all of her other productions), it can hardly be assumed that this is a "coincidence".
Great actors with great ideas, in combination with great directors with great ideas - then such great love in details is the result.

It begins with the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The recent history of the past century is probably known to many people. The black woman is supposed to represent Germany. I don't think she is supposed to be a curse. In the credits, an old song by Rammstein "The Sun" is played. It means that the sun is finally shining over Germany. A future that no one knows. The singer sings about the ambivalent relationship with Germany. In German: Hassliebe.

Very Very good Reaction!!!! The whole Video will understand only Historians and Germans and these people also have to watch the video several times. Meanwhile there are many good explanations about this video on RUclips. The video features various events from German history, including Roman times, the Middle Ages, witch hunting and burning, Protestant Reformation, the November Revolution, the "Golden Twenties" and inflation, Nazi book burnings, the Hindenburg disaster, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Weimar Republic, the Red Army Fraction (violent alliance of young people and students against Nazis in high state and economy positions in post-war Germany), and the division of the country into West and East Germany

Thanx for following my suggestion :-)
The video itself is -for me- really a "must see“, as it has not only the highest production quality there is and it is showing the dark history of Germany from the year 9‘bc (Varus battle at Teutoburg forest) till modern times. Yes, there is so much going on / happening, there are hidden hints, … that even for me as a German with a fair knowledge of history, I cannot get everything in one, two ore three times watching it. I can understand that this can be distracting, for me it is just fascinating.
If you want to get an analysis about the content of the song afterwards:
    www.loudersound.com/features/we-got-an-oxford-university-professor-to-explain-what-the-fcks-going-on-in-that-rammstein-video
There was a huge controversy about especially one particular scene taking place in a concentration camp. They used a part of it for a trailer without lyrics. That was a planned scandal. If you see the full video and have the lyrics at the same time on, you’ll see that it was OK, what they did. But they just love to be provocative.
Here is an analysis of this scene including the english lyrics (the lyrics are limited, the story is told in pictures): metalreport.co.uk/rammsteins-deutschland-analysis/
If you see the photos within this article you’ll understand the discussion.
A longer video analysis is online here: ruclips.net/video/sc-euVL8xQs/видео.html
Thanx for your honest and true reaction!
PS: Lord of the Lost with "Under the Sun" is a cool song by an awesome band :-)

The song and the video are both about Germany's history. It's not pro or anti German. It's about the good and the bad.

Technical Hint - don't leave the pointer below the time runner bar on the video. It's much better if you drop it in the middle of the screen and don't move it until you want to stop the video since the junk at the bottom of the screen, which is just a distraction, will disappear.

In a way the video is more important than the song itself. It's pure philosophy, only understandable if one knows a lot about German history.

As a historian, let me just say that history should never be progressed chronologically, but with focus on reoccuring themes. The video is just as chaotic, brutal, tragic and beautiful as the german history :)

Well the song is lyricwise about an emotional rollercoaster ride of feeling hate and love (inner contradiction of feelings) for Deutschland (Germany) ..and that permanent changing in timeslines with no chronological order is simply pointing out - even elevating - that emotional rollercoaster ride in an optical form..
Well it is a German song + video and therefore made for a German audience - and believe me german history is very well known by the german audience anyway and they understand on spot those - to be fair - often very abstract view points of historical focus points of German history shown in the video anyway.
But I totally can understand your point of view about the video, because I presume you are not familiar of 1000 years of german history, therefore that whole scenery must have been very confusing to watch, of course.
