  • I am on a no ac call where a ductless split system isn't blowing cold air. I test it and find the refrigerant pressures are low. I then lug refrigerant up to the roof and recharge 410a into the system.

I am in Louisiana and I have a couple radio system on roofs downtown (20 stories etc..) and it's a nightmare.. 97 deg F and 75% humidity making it feel well into the 100's.. Then having to gram hot ass steel and climb up a small tower up there all to change a marker beacon... Tons of fun...

When I was a lot younger I trained as a Steeplejack, working on power station chimneys & cooling towers etc. I don't mind walking along parapets a 100' up or walking the ridge line of roofs. But for some reason, seeing you going over the end of that wall made me feel pretty uncomfortable, take care out there.

    Adding R410A without finding / repairing the leak first?? In Europe, that is illegal. Is there no legislation in the US that covers this too?

    • @thehvachacker
      @thehvachacker  5 лет назад +5

      So you never recharge an ac system for a customer without repairing the leak first. Here in the USA it’s the wild west. If my company doesn’t charge it up someone else comes by charges it up and steals my customer. They already made a down payment on a new system. This is just to keep them going since the install dept is a month behind

    • @bastiaanvandeven9230
      @bastiaanvandeven9230 5 лет назад

      Yeah, for cars now to. Its a shame for older cars, in the past you could just fill them up so you could use your AC for a season or two again. Now you have to be leak-free before you can add new refrigerant. Pain in the ass especiallyfor older cars, and the repairs are getting more expensive. Ofcourse for environmental reaons. Really hard to find any AC authorized shops who still fill them up withouth leaksearch/repairs, because of the strict random checks.
      R22 is phased out for environmental reasons ass well. Reparis on R22 systems can be done, only when not touching the gass itself. R22 is only on some shels in some barns maybe... but it's now also illegal to use this existing R22

      It’s been a while since I’ve read the EPA regulations but if I remember correctly, it is not a requirement to find/repair a leak on any system that holds less than 50 lbs. of refrigerant.

      @@thehvachacker nope, we never just "top up" a system. The laws here state that we cannot knowingly charge a system that has a leak. Penalty is up to 5 years in jail and/or £20,000-00 fine!

    You adding liquid refrigerant trough vapor line way too fast - You must use the liquid to vapor converter to prevent compressor damage - You must always make sure all your elements are clean before adding Freon or getting proper reading- Superheat or sub cooling must be always be performed

    • @jeffb8437

      Superheat and subcool don’t tell you much on a Mini-Splits. There constantly modulating and I know of no data provided by any of the manufacturers telling what measurements to look for. This usually have an accumulator also

      Superheat and subcoolare useless with Mini-Splits. I even say in the video I’m not doing it how the manufacturers want these systems charged. They want recover and weigh the charge in. Yet not always practice. That’s added equipment I’m lugging up onto the roof. Here we know there is a leak and this system will get replaced but need to make it operate until it’s not needed then replacement

      I never understood why charge a leaking unit, I'm pretty sure here in Europe it's illegal to charge a unit with a known leak. That's said R22 is illegal here too, you can use your equipment till it needs a charge but if you are low or need to modify the system then you have to use a replacement.

      I used to build and service TV, and radio / cell phone towers and I never followed the government red tape rules to the letter because I am there to get a job done not dick about with PPG and safety harness hook ins every 5 feet.. Try that on a 500 foot tower, you will be climbing all day and be worn out tired by the 250 foot mark... I would free climb that shit because if I fucked up it would not matter anyways once you are over 60 feet. So the rule #1 was DO NOT FUCK UP.. with that in mind you pay attention to what you grab and your footing.. It's literally that simple.. The people who wrote OSHA rules are desk jockeys, never worked a real field job ever and they think they know whats best for business. Those rules exist for those people that have zero common sense and by all rights should NOT be working field jobs...

    At least you admit you know you were supposed to recover all the refrigerant and fill it up the fact respect is the only correct way to do the minisplits. The only correct way to guess use the factory software laptop interface connects into the circuitboard set the system into test mode it will spin up the fans to the correct airflow for testing you can read all the temperature sensors in the system to set your superheat at each air handler well in test mode. For every hundred technicians who feel and minis split by guessing I’m going by beer can cold I see 100 systems that are improperly re-charged either overfilled or under filled .

      Totally agree but it's POS Sanyo and you know you have a leak. Doing a leak search under a pressure test or isolation pressure test would be the ideal time to recover, find leak , repair and recharge properly. Recovering refrigerant will inconvenience the customer with no cooling for even longer.
      Plus I'm sure he must quote all that work out before it can be done on a old POS. Day before 4th of July gas and go till you know customer wants to pay a lot for a unit you struggle to get parts for. ........

      The HVAC Hacker yes true. But I have all the software and hardware interface from the manufacturer that was the way I was trained when I was young from my father. I never know short cuts or the hack way to do things. I taught my son the same way we fly out to the different VRF large commercial and heat recovery system and small mini split training. The first thing I buy is the factory software. When we go out to a job site hookup to the system print out of email to the building owner, property management or customer how their system was improperly recharged explained how they have a higher power bill and shorten the life of their compressor. After I recharge I print out the factory data showing the lower compressor temp and lower power consumption. After that I got all the calls and I ask and get more money and pick and choose best gravy jobs. Explain to your customer if a Tech comes to service his units that Tech should give you a before and after print out proving the work you did. Also use MeasureQuick app by Jim Burgman, show your customer how are you Geo tag using Google maps the exact location of the unit on the roof through Google earth with the invoice number documenting the work on each one of their units. How are you track each piece of their equipment and if the customer owns multiple buildings they can have access to their invoices with each technicians notes so every person who comes after the next person who just prior worked on the unit will know the past history of each unit by using the Google Maps with the Measure Quick app. Explain if a technician goes up to a VFR unit or mini split in the first thing he does is hook up a set of gauges and start pumping in refrigerant to fire him immediately delete his phone number out of your cell phone and find somebody else. With education good tools good knowledge you were start selecting the cream of the crop customers who are willing to pay you well so you can make three times more money and only do 1/3 the amount of work. And the customers who do not see this as a value you don’t want those customers in the first place and you would not even want recommendations from them to somebody they know because they’ll be the same kind a customer could think of you as dirt cheap labor off the street. Good luck pick up your game I wish you the best of luck study and practice and become better.

      t lech t lech I don't trust using measure quick with my customers info. We have a software program we made that all our customers notes goes into for any of our techs who work on this system. There is 30 commercial techs who could end up here. All equipment gets a work order. We can see everything we ever done to the machine and all tech notes. We don't trust giving customer data to a public app so if using measure quick we don't put any system info in. Besides measure quick will tell you a filter drier is plugged when you have a bad txv. I tested drier for shits and giggles yet same temp in and out. Can't troubleshoot off info an app is giving you, have to be a free thinker. This system is getting replaced at the end of the season so I just need to get it to operate for now. Only time we connect to the systems is if it's a VRF. Otherwise I can troubleshoot all problems with service manuals if needed. I already have the cream of the crop customers and am known as being very expensive. You must not watch my videos I can tell from the comment. This is a make it work service call. We have all the equipment at this site and thousands of other sites documented. Now you do know this system your metering device is in condenser so subcooling is useless. You can fire me, I get fired by idiots who are close minded in every video.
