Even with all the limitations on her voice, her phrasing is frickin fantastic. She reaches down and scoops up those bottom notes like magic. She uses the (unfortunate) scratch in her mix voice in a beautiful way. She reminds me of Louis Armstrong, who's voice was not beautiful, who conveyed emotion so perfectly. Poor Whitney....

It’s like how Frank Sinatra said he learned all his phrasing from Billie Holiday. That’s why I think Ella Fitzgerald is actually much better than Billie, bc she had that immaculate phrasing, as well as a gorgeous instrument exquisite technique!
Whitney did too before the damage set it, but this is a very Billie channeled performance if you ask me!

This reminded me of being at a jazz club in the 40s, gosh, I loved it. Whitney never lost her voice just the drive to prove to the world, she was special. She was always special, and nothing any one can say about her, now, past or present will ever change that. Talk that talk but she walked that walk like a true diva. Stay mad while she's rocking in heaven with the best.

She had regained the power in her lower register, it was just a matter of working on the higher register. Alcohol, smoking cigarettes or anything else you smoke will damage up your vocal cords, especially from years of abuse. I hated it when her voice changed and she couldn't hit those remarkable notes of "I Always Love You" like she use to, or seeing how people walked out on her concerts overseas and hearing how she sounded. I would rather just pull the old videos to listen to her up to "My Love Is Your Love". Now I do like "Million Dollar Bill" off her last cd, but that's it because I miss what made her "The Voice".

I couldn't help recalling the legandary performance of these two singers, joined by luther and stevie. Four of them sang this particular song 'that's what friends are for' that unforgettable night, and since their voices were all at their peak, the energy coming out from the stage was incredibly magnificent. It's really funny though, that their voices, although diminished and withered through the test of time, still have the certain power that moves my heart. Their voices may not be as loud as they were twenty years ago, but the strength within still goes on.

This night someone actually mentioned to Dionne that they needed to get Whitney some help (she is clearly high if you know what high is when you see it) and Dionne accused that person of malicious gossip...Does that sound like LOVE??? I don't think drugs destroyed Whitney's voice, she's amazing!! She being in the music industry for over 30 years!!! I don't think anyone of the negative people that talk about her can stand on stage after 30 years of singing and attempt to sing!! The vocal chords get worn just like our bodies, with age you can't do the same things you done in your 20's. Whitney is an amazing singer! I'm going to miss her presence on earth. She lived her life here, now she's living in heaven.

These are truly two of the greatest singers of all time. It's not always about hitting the notes but it's more on giving life and meaning to the song, capturing the audiences' heart and attention from the beginning to end. Very well done.

I see the high notes coming back in this clip too. But, she could still sing anyone under the table even when her voice wasn't all there. I just wish we could see her with her voice restored completely, but I suppose when we meet God we will see.

After watching "This is It" final night of rehearsals for MJ, and now watching this, I am deeply saddened that drugs take such wonderful talents....i.e. Elvis, Michael, Whitney, etc.

she didnt have to the last ten years of her life .she did so damn much in the beginning of her career to carry her over into the next generation. dont believe me, look at the guinness book of world records and look up whitney houston. to do what she did in a short period is nothing short of pure GOD given talent.period.thats why she is celebrated . that means, she was one of the fucking best regardless of her personal struggles.sheesh.

This too is so heart wrenching. Two women who changed the history on the same stage. Blood relatives and one heart. NO ONE will ever take anything away from Whitney's HUGE impact on the world. So tragic. Too gone WAY too soon.

I don't think she was mad that Clive said I'm still your boss, she grinned like how a friend would grin at us saying something , it was said in a joking manner and that's the way Whitney took it, you guys are making so much more out of that ending.......:-)

Actually a lot of her performances from that tour were pretty good. Watch her sing I look to you in Milano, and she also brought the house down in Moscow, Rome, Antwerp, Birmingham, Nottingham, and in London the last 2 concerts June 16th and 17th. People were only saying she couldn't was because she couldn't perform I will Always Love You like she once could.

Also watch her sing Precious Lord at Bobby Brown's mothers funeral. Really showed her voice was coming back.

we have to enjoy Whitney herself, as she lived. I do not want to see a C side movie about her. we can enjoy all the live videos of her actual life. she was her own movie, and we can watch her again and again. : ) love and respect forever.

  • @WillWize

I still get excited watching this!! Whitney still had it in her, her choices vocally were so smart and quick. No matter the condition of her voice, she worked with what she had. I love the moment when Nippy and Dionne hug after TWFAF. For a slight moment Whitney looks like hers 1980s self she and Dionne had a real connection and real love there.
