+TickTak77 I ask the same question every time I watch this movie. He should have won it hands down. He nailed that roll something crazy. Currently my favorite actor.
Ezekiel Major i just love the breadth and width of different roles he can play. Some actors can get typecasted to specific roles. He seems to be able to play anything
+TickTak77 He definetly deserved it more than Russell Crowe. Maximus just gruffed a lot and was mostly just an angry vengeful guy. Whereas Commodus was a tortured soul, who went through a greater range of emotions.
IDK, I prefer this cuz not only was he already sick in the head but his power only continued to deteriorate him. Joffery was just a spoiled piece of shit from episode 1 onward. Which made me just hate him. There wasn't like slight signs then later deterioration.
This is his best performance. This one's better than joker. Pain, hateful, guilt, love, sadness, vengeance all these emotions are shown in Comodous's eyes alltogether.
Phoexnix was superb in this role. I personally think it was his best ever. Meek yet intimidating. Intimidated yet powerful. Conniving, yet not smart. Greedy yet poor of spirit. How does one convey such a myriad of character traits? Skill
I agree. His other performances are outstanding too, but he's always the same "loser" type character (weak, pathetic, and timid) in movies like Joker and Beau.
@@dereksbooks A lot of actors do that, they create a "prototype" of a personality and then they use the role they are assigned to build upon this personality. I think a big part of the blame lies with the producers/directors: "Mhmmm I can really see X actor in this role, he would fit like a glove, and people loved him in X movie where he played a similar character..."
Rodica. Ro : What the hell do his looks have to do with his acting? It’s like saying Alexandra Daddario is the best actress ever cause she got great boobs.
Fun fact: The shouting that he does of "Am I not merciful!?" was ad libbed, so the startled reaction by Connie Nielson is genuine, since she wasn't expecting him to shout in her face.
This is one my most favourite scenes in cinema, he has her cornered- her lover captured, her conspiracy against him revealed, he holds her son hostage and life threatened and wants her to do exactly as he pleases but mostly love him and yet he has all the powers of Rome he is not a God because she will not love him and has enough defiance to reject a kiss...great scene.
JP always has this beautiful ability to channel greatness into pathetic & pitiful characters. His acting is just unreal in Gladiator, the master, Her and obviously in joker.
My family has many times dissapointed me, and I have swallow my pride in many occasions, and somedays i just want to yell at the top of my lungs, AM I NOT MERCIFUL !!
Really? This guy was a incestuous and greedy bastard from the start. He killed Maximus's family, he didn't respect his father's dying wish and played dirty in the final fight. This guy was not born an evil man? Really?
My favourite line in the whole movie... So powerful, sends shivers down my spine... I cant stress enough how well joaquin phoenix played his character 'commodus' in this film... He was truly astonishing!
Wow really? The guy who is insest and pervertic? Not the guy who is a strong warrior, who fought so long, he eventually got exausted, and thw died a hero? wow..
That's deep and after thinking about it, I totally agree. It is Commodus' envy and hatred of an eventual "Gladiator" that made his dark nature come out and set the stage for all the events after.
This is one of my favourite scenes. As for Commodus' character, I *do* pity him, a small amount. His father *did* reject him because he was "not moral" and presumably he was everything his father was not and did not want to see in a person, let alone his own son. According to Marcus himself, even Lucilla was neglected. While she may have been shrewd, she was not *insane* like Commodus. I would argue that Commodus had some in-born moral and emotional defects that perhaps were exacerbated by his father's subsequent rejection of his issues. In other words, a "bad seed." Maybe he could have used more love and acceptance, but would it have made much of a difference? I think not. But our ability to empathize with a sick and twisted person is why Commodus is one of my favourite villains and after all of these years I still remember Joaquin's face when he lost the award and felt so bad for him. He was brilliant in this. 10/10
@@a1tre680 In english, there is a difference in the order: "Am I not merciful?" and "I am not merciful!" But in spanish, it's only the intonation: "¿No soy compasivo?" and "'¡No soy compasivo! Now I rewatched the spanish version and it could be a question but with a 'soft' intonation.
Joaquin Phoenix should've played Lex In Batman V Superman. Just shave his head and give him awesome lines this. Social network dude did so much damage to that movie as well as the writers.

Probably my favourite villain in any movie. By far my favourite character in gladiator. I find it hard to hate Commodus. And great acting, he deserved an oscar for this character.
xXAngelface1Xx He's not evil, just desperate to be loved and seen as a strong, merciful ruler. However, everyone is working against him/hating him so he is unable to. This leads to him mentally breaking down and eventually snapping, here in this scene, when not even his relative will show him love.
+NightBot Ban I agree actually, the reason he became so twisted started with the rejection from his father, making him desperate for love and acceptance.
+Fight4Might I do agree with what you and NightBot Ban are saying. I'll admit that I do kinda feel sorry for Commodus too because all he wanted was for someone to love him. His own father didn't care much for him and Lucilla did show love and affection for him in the beginning, but then later on she started to see him as, I guess you could say, a monster.
xXAngelface1Xx Yeh definitely. She loved him as a brother, yet he loved her as his lover. Probably again due to the rejection of others, so he clung onto her.

He knew his son was a monster, that’s the reason because he wanted Maximo as the new emperor. Also, Maximo knew Rome’s social problems, Commodus literally before becaming emperor was living in a bubble
