If DIY Dane can do his own drywall repair... SO. CAN. YOU! Patching a hole in your wall can actually be pretty satisfying, especially when you have few tools and tricks to make the job go a little faster and easier. You can tackle that home renovation yourself to save money, or fix that drywall in your apartment and get your security deposit back. In this one DIY Dane shares a few of the techniques he has learned over the past 30 years and shows you how to patch a hole in drywall including the easiest way to fit and secure a patch panel, how to tape the seams and apply the joint compound and how to apply several thin coats of joint compound for minimal sanding.

what joint compound do you use? With the mesh/fiber tape I’m hearing you need a fast setting joint compound or it will crack later on
You need to spread setting compound then lay tape over as 1st step.
@@mjjackaroos112 With paper tape, yes that's true. You can apply the tape first with mesh, that's why it has a sticky side.

Another thing is that if your not a great mudder, you can be a great sander and have the finished product still end up good.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, it always shocks me when they do these patches with no backing. It just seems like a much better idea to mount the patch piece to avoid cracking.

I’d always turned to mesh tape bc it’s sticky. But in hindsight, I was technically using it wrong this whole time 🫠 I mostly used all purpose w/ it, not quick set 🫣
These days I think it’s time we switch it up, to mainly using FibaFuse/Max, especially for these scenarios! Paper tape was always King anyway, but FibaFuse appears to be the best of both worlds! Less chances of cracking, it’s thinner, less muds needed, lays flatter less humps & sands better! Def my new goto 👏😃
Thanks! That's okay, I used to use all purpose mud with mesh too. 😳 One of the commenters here posted that mesh tap isn't the best and mentioned the FibaFuse tape so I'm going to try that next.

Thanks! Pre-fill is always a great idea, but there seems to be differing views with mesh. Some say you need to with mesh tape, and others argue you don't as the gap gets filled when you apply the mud over the open mesh. In my upcoming complete garage drywall video I pre-fill everything though! 😁
What kind of screws need to be used to screw in the wood in the back of the drywall? Don’t want to mess up the drywall that’s still there. Thanks!
I like coarse drywall screws, maybe 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. You want the bugle heads sunk just slightly into the paper, but not so deep they break through.
Personally, I haven't used any kind of tape in my drywall repairs and they work just fine.Can somebody explained to me why it's good to Umesh tape or paper type?I'm just curious.I'm not trying to insult people

Should’ve filled the crack before tapping, if that spots ever bumped it’ll crack around the patch
You can fill the crack first if you like, but there is no need with mesh as the mud will squeeze through the mesh and fill the gap as you apply it. Never had a crack yet! 😁

Fill wall cavity with unwanted garbage and junk.
Stuff hole with garbage and sticky tape.
Pack on filler.
Let dry two weeks.
Cordless orbital sander.
Filler #2 for the cracks, smooth and nice.
Paint.
Get deposit back.
I call it the "Tennant special"

Use a damp sponge to do your sanding cut down on dust.

I don't bother with back bracing. I just cut it to fit really tight. Then use fiber fuse and gun the fused part dry. It doesn't matter what bedding compound to use. You're gunning it dry. Only heat gun the fused part if the patch is on painted walls and never keep the gun on a single spot for more than a second. Keep it moving. Once you see it dry. Sand down the edges with a heavy grit. 60 to 80 grit then slap a another bedding coat wider than the first coat and gun it dry. Sand it again and apply finishing coat. Use a finishing sanding block for the last coat. Each coat drying time gets shorter as you've heated up the wall. After doing a few like this. You can patch, coat and sand it in under an hour.
I say it all the time, there is more than one way to get these jobs done properly.

And how do you match the existing texture? Repairing the hole is the easy part, not making it look obvious is the hard part.
True, texturing is the hardest part -- it truly is an art! I will do a video and share what I can.
Don’t you need to put joint compound after mudding with fast 20/40 and sanding?
You can, but I don't believe you have to. I've never topped with regular mud after using the hot mud and never had an issue.
I remember back in votech class we had this thick shit called fast patch that you fixed those kind of holes with

No, 45 minute hot mud.
Instead of mesh tape i like to cut a piece 2 inches larger in both directions then take off the excess 1 inch of drywall but leave the paper and mud the paper in. It has a stronger seal since its attached to the drywall already and is easier to float out.
They call that a California Patch and that would have worked too. I do believe that is a kind of controversial technique that is either loved or hated. Bottom line, there is always more than one way to get any given job done!
What grit sand paper should you sand with?
I use 220 a lot. Nothing too aggresive or you'll have to sand out the deep scratches.

How long do I have to let dry before painting ?
You know what I'm not 100% sure. This is 45 minute hot mud and to be honest I think it's ready to go right after it dries. But that's a good question I'm going to look into that. I do recommend priming before paint. I know the paint today claims to have primer in it, but I don't trust that. Thanks for a posting a great question!
What grit do
You use to sand the wall?
Around 220 or 320, anything too agressive and you'll have to sand out the scratches. Foam sanding blocks help reduce edge grooves. Oh, and don't sand the drywall paper too much.

Could popsicle sticks work for smaller repairs?
Never say never, but I think those are a little too flimsy and it would be hard to get them to hold screws. Don't think I haven't an eyeballed a paint stick and thought, "That might work" though! 🤣
Pros say you must mud before tapping. Then mud again until finished. Otherwise, it cracks.
With paper tape yes you do need to mud first, then tape, then top again with mud. The mesh is actually designed with adhesive to stick directly to the drywall. Then you must use a hot mud for at least the first layer with the mesh tape.
@@LongshotGarage has nothing to do with glue, but structure. Mesh or paper, it must be set on mud to keep air from entering from back of wall through the crevice. Reason why the crevice must be covered before tapping. Or it will crack with time. Same principle of a butt joint.

No need to Mud before mesh. I did my own house 20 years ago and not one crack yet with the mesh without mudding before it I guess Pros are using the wrong mud
@@CoolTsarina again yes if you are using paper tape then mud won’t push through it. Mush tape is mesh and has holes obviously and allows mud to penetrate and fill behind
I have a hole just like this I need to fix. I don’t understand what you screw the wood into.
You basically just attach the wood to the drywall. Carefully screw through the drywall and into the wood strip itself, pulling it tight up against the back of drywall.
What drywall mud do you use for these?
With the mesh tape, you have to use hot mud. I used the 45-minute stuff and I wouldn't recommend anything faster unless you really know what you're doing. I just get whatever brand they have at Home Depot.
What is the brand of the mud you’re using
Just the stuff you get at Home Depot, USG Sheetrock Brand. Just in case you didn't know, if you are using mesh tape you have to use hot mud. I use the 45 minute stuff myself.

Is this plaster or joint compound? I am confused on what I’m supposed to use
It is not plaster, it's drywall mud or joint compound like you said. If you're using mesh tape make sure to get a bag of the hot mud that sets in 45 minutes or slower. Anything faster than that is really hard to work with unless you're a pro.

why do you need mesh?
You can use mesh or paper drywall tape. Either one makes the joint stronger and keeps it from cracking out.

Sure, hit up your favorite home improvement store. Grab a bag of hot mud, I recommend 45 minutes or longer. Don't be enticed by the faster stuff, it'll move faster than you I promise. Get a metal, 6-inch, drywall knife and a metal mud tray (avoid the plastic one, I started with those and regretted it.) You'll also need mesh drywall tape, of course you can use the paper tape if you prefer. Besides that you will need some some short drywall screws, a few scrap pieces of wood, and a small piece of drywall that will cover the patch you need to make. If you don't have any drywall, they do sell small pieces at the store so you don't have to buy a 4 x 8 ft sheet. You could also get a much wider taping knife if you want to spend the money, but you don't need to. Oh, and a foam sanding block to finish it off. Hope this helps!

I don't use any specific brand. You can find the mesh or paper drywall joint tape at your favorite big box/hardware store. Hope that helps!

No taper by trade uses mesh, leave that for tile guys
@@batmansdad3195mesh tape is perfectly fine for patches like this, paper is mostly used for putting in whole sheets or if there's a potential for movement and yes tapers by trade definitely use mesh tape 😂

Usually they sell either 18 x 18 or 24 x 24 inch patch panel drywall pieces at the Home Depot or Lowe's.
Do you need to use the mesh?
You need to use something... you can use the mesh or you can use the paper. I always assumed the mesh was stronger, but recently I've heard that the paper is stronger. Remember, if you do choose the mesh you must use one of the fast drying joint compounds -- I like the 45 minute mud.
@@LongshotGaragedo you have to use prime before painting it? I did a small patch like that before but I forgot to use prime, so I just painted like 2 or 3 coats. I looked good at the time, but I don't know if it will stay that way on the long run
@@carlossilveira2118 Yes and no. A lot of the new paint claims to have primer in it, but I don't have much faith in that. I feel if you have raw drywall, brick, block or stucco, you should prime first. However, with a small drywall patch I think you can get away without it -- especially if you do several coats like you did. If your patch looks good, it should be fine!

Sloppy work but right idea of patching.
Why would you call it sloppy?
Cause you need to put mud down before the tape and then more mud on top for the tape I was always to be generous with the mud when it comes to tape after you cover the tape you slide your knife down the tape and all the excess will cone out the sides but it ensures there's mud EVERYWHERE on the tape. If you skip any of these steps your it will Crack which then causes the paint in top to Crack as well and it's SUPER noticeable haha
@@tylerkelly99 Not true, you don't have to put down mud before mesh tape. If so why would it be sticky on one side? Hey, you can pre-fill if you want, but it won't crack if you don't. Don't just take my word for it, Check out the Vancouver Carpenter and others here on RUclips.

Thanks for your comment! Hopefully, I can help. So you need a drywall mud tray and a drywall knife. If you're only going to buy one, I suggest a 6-in wide drywall knife. If you're willing to buy two, any of the wider knives will help you flatten out the patch. Of course you also need mesh or paper drywall tape, and drywall mud or joint compound. If you're using the mesh tape you have to use fast setting joint compound that you mix with water. If I can do it, you can do it -- Good luck!

99% of these videos never have textured walls. Why?
I'm not sure about that, but mine did end with texture on the wall, specifically a heavy knockdown. I didn't show the texture being applied because that is much harder than repairing the hole. Texture is an art! One of these days I'll do a video on it.
Because texture walls are stupid and just collect dust while looking like a half ass mud job

Just gotta soak it, the dried mud will come off your pan. Next time try cleaning out the pan and your knive(s) asap. Also don't use 5 min mud, I won't go any faster than 45 minute.

Not sure where you see it being rough, but it was flat and smooth with perfectly feathered edges.
Yeah those edges aren't perfectly feathered at all and also the lines that are all over the place. I'd say it's pretty rough
Believe what you want. Those lines were there until I smoothed them out with the large drywall knife, which, of course you can see. It took only minimal sanding, and yes, the edges are feathered perfectly. Once the texture was on you couldn't even find that spot.
@@LongshotGarage You can see on the other joint next to that patch that the edges aren't perfectly feathered. No need to get all defensive, I mean, I'd say it's good enough for a DIY'er like yourself

You're right, loose paper, or any contaminant, really messes up the mud and makes more work. That wasn't the issue here, the edge of the opening was fine. What you see is the mesh tape on the first pass. I like to build up in several light coats, but this job only took 2 with almost no sanding.
Why are we now set in America for everything we do. What’s wrong with using a plastering trowel. What’s with all these spatula type tools. 🙄
A trowel an hock only come in metric sizes, not SAE. 😂 Seriously, I looked for a hock and couldn't find one in AZ, I would actually like to try a hock and trowel out.
There's nothing wrong with this but it is faster to leave the original small hole and just blade some thick base coat or even cornice cement into the hole then tape over. If you can't get the plaster to stay in the hole you can put literally anything you want in there to stop it falling through. I've used the cardboard roll for paper tape and just wedged it. Get creative.
I don't know man, I've never heard of that technique. This whole seems a little big to just fill in with some kind of mud. But, hey, there's more then one way to get jobs like this done. Do you have a video on how to do this?

You're right, I'm an amateur. And like most amateurs I'm not gonna be able to get that smooth as I want with the 6 inch knife. The large joint knife can help those of us without years of experiance get better results. Have you ever considered a job as a motivational speaker?
@@LongshotGarage you missed the point. Apply the mud with the 12 inch knife and smooth with it you don’t need the small knife to apply the mud and the smooth with the 12.
