This is a song that people have been begging me to play my dad since the start of the channel. It's finally here - Dad's first reaction to DMX - Slippin'. I am unfamiliar with DMX myself, only knowing his big hits like "Where The Hood At" or "X Gon' Give It To Ya". So, if there are any other DMX songs that would be great for my or my dad to hear please comment them below!

Although I briefly mentioned it in the video, I was confused as to why this song was censored despite the rest of the album being explicit. If anyone knows why please let me know below! Thanks for watching ✌🏻
Love this song
My best guess is it was edited for radio play. It was heavy in rotation on the air back then.
The reason given for the censorship of the song is because the artist whose song was sampled, the great Grover Washington, Jr., wouldn't allow for any remake of his song, "Moonstreams", to include profanity on the final record.
@@Sweetnerdgirl Oh thank you alot! I bought this Album 15 years ago and always asked myself why.
It was his way of telling everyone his story in his OWN WORDS without offending anyone so the MASSES would hear it
"To live is to suffer, to survive is to find meaning in the suffering" that first line pretty much sums it all up. RIP X
@@musicofDK 1. Who tf is that?
2. Where did he get it from?
May he rest in peace. Freaking suck on his death and how he died.
Actually the Hindus teach this ideology. That suffering is an inescapable part of life. And to find the meaning of it all.
I still use this til this day

DMX wrote his pain like no other. Very special artist. May he continue to Rest In Peace 🙏🏿

Yo gorgeous girl!
In the huge wake of Tupac's death, DMX became the rap worlds street poet. Complete raw imagery and honesty in his lyrics.

So true they make you feel their music 💯
One of my favorites
This song came out in 98 but I didn’t hear it until 99. I was addicted to pcp for many ears and the first time I heard this song I started to cry because it felt like this song was written for me I was so into my addiction that I abandoned everyone that loved me. But truth be told this song saved my life I’ve been drug free since dec of 1999. Thank you dmx for allowing god to use you to save me.

God bless you for your testimony 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Awesome, love this, Great for you brother, ❤️X
I'm in my 40's and this song STILL gives me the chills!! In a good way....
Same here.
Exactly! I'm 44 and yes, DMX is that deal!
At 42 I remember when my lil bro got kicked out at 16 years old. He was out of control and my parents had two younger siblings to raise whilst he was raising hell…. This always reminded of that time. God looked out for him as he did well and he’s got 2 kids of his own now as a man in his late 30’s (things could’ve been different) but yeah I get you bro.
same here!
same exactly
One of the most prolific artist. Wore his heart on his sleeve. Pure raw talent and energy and always gave praises to God despite his missteps in life. Definitely admirable. He gave us ppl from Yonkers, NY a voice and was considered the ppls champ. Rest In Peace DMX Earl Simmons. One of my favorite rappers of all time.

X was also really honest.
Very meaningful words and very true. RIP DMX you will always be number 1 to me. Thank you for helping me thru the hard times.
Read E.A.R.L. and loved him ever since. Loved him ever since I bought the Harlem World album but reading that gave me the ultimate respect for him.
From the BayArea707 and ima 80's Baby And Felt His Vibes All The Out Here Definitely The People Champ R.I.P. DMX 🙏🏽
I saw him in concert, I remember he used to end each show with a prayer. He was so genuine and spiritual and loving. The “I can’t get up” part always gets me too esp the second verse. And when he talks about needing to get high to get by, and how his day starts with smoking weed, then drinking made him mean/angry, and finally he’d do coke which made him violent, enough to mug people - he’s talked about that. He was on drugs very badly, that’s why he didn’t care about his appearance. He stayed on the streets with a bloody knife (mugging). Very dark. Dmx stands for dark man X. Dark is his bad side, man is who he is at his core, and X is what you don’t want to know. He explained it kinda like that. He does a lot of dog references because he would befriend/take in stray dogs, he felt they were the only trustworthy thing. He would sleep with them on top of buildings when he was homeless. May he be at peace, he overcame his struggles and was lively. I’ve been binge watching you guys. Y’all are awesome 👍
Thank you for that background to DMX and for watching. Definitely need to hear more of him! (dad)
@@frontroom he’s definitely worth learning about. DMX was given crack unknowingly by a male role model. His interviews about his early life are beyond heartbreaking. He did try though. He married & loved his wife (the boo mentioned in the song) the best he could. He loved his kids. He loved God & prayed in concert & on his albums. A tortured soul who definitely earned his rest.
Bro I read a biography by him, his childhood was terrible, his mother used to abuse him and violently beat him while praising and cherishing his sister because they had different dads, then he was tricked into smoking crack as the previous comment stated. He even had a dog who was his best friend at a low point in his life that was gunned down by the police.
Dmx said his mom never told him she loved him and dmx was crying thats deep af tbh
This was a great insight, 🙏

Damnnn this song means a lot to me…my dad used to bump this alot back when I was a kid and he was still just in his 20s. Now that I’m the same age as he was and still trying to get myself together…seeing him go thru stuff, trying to do the right thing for his two boys and figure life out.. it all makes sense

Amen. Seek God. You got this.
DMX's delivery is like a preacher. He was super religious - with lots of biblical and christian imagery. His verses are like prayers.
True. He even said he felt like he was supposed to become a preacher but unfortunately his addictions caught up. I was soooo damn ready for his comeback after the VERZUZ he did. I'm happy he lived to give us a final album and it WAS SOOOOO BEAUTIFUL! A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WORK. 😢😢😔😔🙏🏿🙏🏿💙💙
@@portiaismyname he did get an opportunity to preach, a few of his sermons and prayers are on RUclips. Love & light 😊
DMX was born in Baltimore and moved to Mount Vernon, NY. This song speaks about the hurt, pain, trials and tribulations that he endured as a child. His mother named him after one of her boyfriends, and some of the guys used to beat on him and so did his mother. His mother disregarded his presence because she was always high. He found a friend in dog, he felt loved unconditionally and not alone. They slept on rooftops of his apartment building. He was talking about his ex wife when he said and to my boo who stuck with a n through all the bullshit because it's due, her name is Tashera. It's like he predicted his future.
How I relate to DMX it's all trama childhood... which I want tho it never lives you that's for sure these songs he's words help me so much what a man what a soul so missed but we all meet 1day ❤️ pure love to all 💯🙏✌️

DMX had an amazing autobiography--it's so honest. He was always so open with his pain hoping to help others.
He made his vulnerability his strength.
DMX was a great artist and genuine person. Took in children, helped people in the neighborhood. Genuine, kind person.
He was such an authentic human being. He also lived a full life.
When it comes to expressing pure emotion in music, DMX is unmatched.

He definitely gonna feel this one...still make me cry - The fact that a guy DMX looked up to laced his blunt with crack when he was only 10(i believe that was the age) pisses me off, because he's the reason why he isn't still alive today. RIP to the GOAT! - You guys should listen to his songs: Look Thru My Eyes, Let Me Fly, How's It Goin Down, and the Damien stories. He has a crazy catalog.
From my experience with crack and coke, putting it in weed doesn’t give you any feeling as close to doing them by themselves. I have a hard time believing that’s why he got addicted since the feeling is nowhere close to as strong. I believe it’s just the hard life he lived that drove him to use drugs to get away.
@@PapeySapote a 10 year old is DEFINITELY going to feel something pretty strong, and a crack/cocaine will cause serious trauma to a child's brain.

DMX was a master of emotion and expression, he has full conversation songs and deeply educated others on addiction and the deeper parts of the soul.
This album came out right around Christmas in ‘98. I vividly remember being 15 and walking in the snow with my Walkman while listening to this album and specifically, this song on repeat. It was sort of a “transitionary” period in a boys life where you realize it’s time to become a man and a lot of change was to come. Something about this song’s melody, verses, along with the cold snow and grey sky just really spoke to me. RIP X
this is one of my dads favorite songs. he was a young teenager when it came out and had recently moved from LA to a small town in minnesota. what you described in your comment is almost exactly what he always says he thinks of when he hears this song. walking to school with his walkman, grey sky overhead and snow everywhere. hating all the big changes he had to go through and just wishing he could go back to his old life.
I always love the wind in the background. It’s very subtle detail but the song would be feel completely different without it.
Wow. Inspiration
People only think of DMX as a party guy but he had bars.
Im 55 and ive been emersed in hip hop...specifically rap since rappers delight.

I cry EVERY time I hear this one it makes me think of how my granny raised me.
Read his book, he talks about how his grandma accepted him more than his mother [his mom loved him but she was really distant to him] but his mom also kept him away from his grandmother because she took up for him against his mother when she was wrong.

This song is very special to me! DMX really was an artist that put alot of emotion to his songs. RIP DMX
For somebody as spiritually sensitive as DMX was, who often spoke about God and prayed his heart out in shows and on the record, it makes sense that his delivery was that of a preacher.

"It's Dark and Hell is Hot" and "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood" are two of the most influential AND greatest rap albums of all time. Pac and DMX were poets who rapped. Their music touched souls and were meant to be felt not heard. 2 of my favorites and were instrumental in mine and a lot of others to change their lives through our pain.
DMX is one of the greatest raw emotional artists in hip hop history. His struggles with the Dark and Light are something that people from all generations and backgrounds can identify with, which is what made him transcend genres. The energy that shines out of him wasn't only in his songs but also in his normal life.

I remember a classmate was late to first period English every single day senior year. The teacher asked why she was late and she said she HAD to listen to the entire “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” album. When DMX died that was my first memory. X was the perfect blend of motivation, party, comedy, love and thug. I hope he is resting well in peace.
I skipped homecoming to see Belly because I had to support anything from DMX. My father passed a few days after DMX like the same week and my heart hasn’t began to repair
I remember playing this song as an anthem during some of my most stressful times as a health care provider! The context may not be the same for everyone, but the message is universal! Everyone struggles and needs encouragement and faith! 😊
Lord give me a sign is a must when familiarizing with DMX, it shows a dichotomy that is unique in hiphop and rap music as well that made his 5 first albums hit platinum. "I can feel it" and "Let me fly" are two solid songs of his great discography as well.

I like the fact that your dad even though he doesn't know much about hip-hop but his knowledge of music is so vast I really like that
This is about his addiction. And we didn't even understand that back then. We all related it to whatever was "slipping" us up in our own lives. Good music.
His first two albums were released in the same year. And both became #1s. Something that was never done before
You speaking facts right there sir!
Plus he was the first music artist ever to have his first five albums go platinum, and reach number 1 on the billboard charts.
Such a blessing to have a father that can see past the cussing to the heart of the lyrics. Also a father that is willing to talk about emotions, life and how to interpret the challenges that a person may face in their life. DMX became a hard core Christian and often prayed on stage and in his albums.
This is so true. He came to Indianapolis once and was late to get on stage. Someone I knew was working security. They said the team was told DMX was at the venue, but no one could find him.
He was in the parking lot praying with fans. A manager said to go get him. "He's late" and the security guys started arguing with each other because who the heck wants to go tell DMX to STOP PRAYING?!? 😂

I remember seeing that cover on billboards in New York City. I was maybe 10 years old. Man, it was a message for sure. You could not ignore that cover.
That point about the chorus makes me appreciate that song even more. Being his delivery was always almost screaming (did it way before this new era) He could have easily said “slipping I’m falling I CANT GET UP” but that last line really communicates hopelessness.

And now I know that happy days are not far away
If I'm strong enough I'll live long enough to see my kids
Doin' somethin' more constructive with their time than bids
I know because I been there, now I'm in there
Sit back and look at what it took for me to get there
First came the bullshit, the drama with my mama
She got on some fly shit so I split and said that I'ma
Be that seed that doesn't need much to succeed
Strapped with mad greed and a heart that doesn't bleed
I'm ready for the world or at least I thought I was
Baggin' niggas when I caught a buzz
For thinkin' about how short I was
Goin' too fast, it wouldn't last, but yo I couldn't tell
Group homes and institutions prepared my ass for jail
They put me in a situation forcin' me to be a man
When I was just learnin' to stand without a helping hand
Damn, was it my fault, somethin' I did
To make a father leave his first kid at seven doin' my first bid?
Back on the scene at fourteen with a scheme
To get more cream than I'd ever seen in a dream
And by all means I will be livin' high off the hog
And I never gave a fuck about much but my dog
That's my only mothafucka I hit off with my last
Just another lil nigga headed nowhere fast
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(I will hold you down)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
('Cause I got your back, I got your back)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(Oh, the Lord is with you now)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
(And He got your back, He got your back)
That ain't the half, shit gets worse as I get older
Actions become bolder, heart got colder
Chip on my shoulder that I dared a nigga to touch
Didn't need a clique 'cause I scared a nigga that much
One deep with the pit startin' shit for kicks
Catchin' Vicks, throwin' bricks, gettin' by bein' slick
Used to get high, just to get by
Used to have to puff my L in the morning before I could fly
Ate somethin', a couple of forties made me hate somethin'
I did some coke, now I'm ready to take somethin'
Three years later showin' signs of stress
Didn't keep my hair cut or give a fuck how I dressed
I'm possessed by the darker side, livin' the cruddy life
Shit like this kept a nigga with a bloody knife
Wanna make records but I'm fuckin' it up
I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(I will hold you down)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
('Cause I got your back, I got your back)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(Oh, the Lord is with you now)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
(And He got your back, He got your back)
Wasn't long before I hit rock bottom
Niggas talkin' shit, like, "Damn, look how that rock got him!"
Open like a window, no more indo
Look at a video, sayin' to myself: "That coulda been yo
Ass on the TV," believe me, it could be done
Somethin's got to give, gots to change 'cause now I've got a son
I gots to do the right thing for shorty
And that means no more gettin' high, drinkin' 40s
So I get back lookin' type slick again
Fake niggas jump back on my dick again
Nothin' but love for those that know how it feel
And much respect to all my niggas that kept it real
Kept a nigga strong, kept a nigga from doin' wrong
Niggas know who they is and this is your fuckin' song
And to my boo who stuck with a nigga through
All the bullshit, you'll get yours because it's due
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(I will hold you down)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
('Cause I got your back, I got your back)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I can't get up
(Oh, the Lord is with you now)
Ayo I'm slippin', I'm fallin', I gots to get up
Get me back on my feet so I can tear shit up
(And He got your back, He got your back)
(I will hold you down, 'cause I got your back, I got your back)
(Oh, the Lord is with you now, and He got your back, He got your back)
See, this is that shit, this is that shit
That all real niggas can relate to
This is from the heart, baby
Don't get it twisted
X, baby
Great 👍
Awesome. I had quite a few of the lyrics wrong all this time. The song is even more poignant to me now. Thanks for the effort.
@@seekingserenity1902 you’re welcome
😊
Another heartfelt rap song I would suggest is “all that I got is u” by Ghostface Killah. Details a rough upbringing while being very melodic.
Definitely
Great recommendation
Idk if anyone can express pain like DMX could… Amazing soul, amazing artist may he forever rest in peace 🐶 🙅🏿♂️ 🤍 🕊
You guys made a great assessment of the song off of your first listen! Your guys love for music is amazing I would love to relax and listen and talk music with you guys one day!
Thanks so much!!
RIP DMX. Although some beg to differ, he was very spiritual artist. A vessel to do God's work. Every album had a prayer. He was a message to this young generation. Si gi g... Lord give me a sign. Let me know what's you mind. Tell me how to reach the blind.
💯 He was special.
He was a man of God 🥰 I co-sign this
First off, In my opinion this is the best song DMX ever wrote. The emotion is so pure and honest. But most importantly I just want to say I think this video of father and son being able to sit down and discuss something like this and for the father to take it so seriously and truly want to connect to the song and the emotions involved with it with his son is just amazing to me. What a great father and what a special father and son relationship!
DMX lived in the same building as my grandma back in 1999. I was born 1995 & I remember seeing him in the streets as a kid. My father owned a Motorcycle shop & so DMX in Yonkers always came around always had dogs with him.
I love the way you guys appreciate every piece of a song man 😭 making me notice things I’ve overpassed for years listening to these songs
Same! The way they experience these songs & dive into them warms the heart
There is just so much depth to all the rap songs we’ve done so far. With each listen I discover more. Thanks for watching. (dad)
@@frontroom Thanks for sharing your experience with us! 🙌🏾
@@frontroom yes! Thank you 🙏🏽
YESSSSS I HAVE BE PUTTING THIS IN ALL THE COMMENTS SINCE YOU GUYS STARTED... LOVE FROM IRELAND 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪.... R.I.P THE GOAT
This song has gotten me thru the darkest part of my life …. I CANNOT THANK DMX ENOUGH FOR THIS SONG🙏🙏🙏 RIP to the GOAT
Was always a fan but then earl 2000s a tour came through my college town. X, Nas, Lil Kim. Lil Kim and Nas were both out there with a million people on stage and mics, hard to follow, just messy performance. X comes out no shirt by himself rocks the place for 2 hours. Goes from prayer to barking to yelling and rocking the crowd, he was amazing. RIP
