You really have to listen to the entire album to understand DMX as an artist and as a man. It is a dark album but also has light and hope which really encompasses who DMX was. Also side note... DMX has a strong love for stray dogs because as a neglected child he found friendship and commonality with the neglected and abandoned stray dogs on the streets. He appreciated the the unconditional love and loyalty of dogs. Thats why you hear a lot of dog barking and growls and him referencing himself as "The Dog" in his music.
I remember being in grade school, my best friends brother had this entire CD on replay. So much on there but I still enjoy Why Do Good Girls Like Bad Guys. So much great music coming out at that time.
Indeed Damien is another name for Lucifer and this does have to do with selling your soul to devil in a way. Notice that Damien comes in right after DMX asks where his guardian angel is, and also DMX's "son" compares him to Chucky, who in the Child's Play movies is something that appears nice and innocent at first but is truly sinister. My take on the chorus is that between snakes (sneaky people who will screw you over), rats (snitches), cats (honestly has a few possible slang meanings), and dogs (true homies), it's hard to tell them apart if you don't have your mind in the right place. And here DMX mistakenly sees Damien as his dog.
I am not sure Damien is actually a nickname for the Devil. Damien is from a movie called "The Omen" & he wasn't the devil he was the Devils Child. The Omen is a hollywood horror franchise that addressed the anti-christ according to christian mythology.
The entire song is about DMX selling his soul to the devil to become rich and famous, I love how he does both voices, you need to folllow up with Damien 2 and 3 to see the entire road they go down.
The snake, the rat, the cat, the dog… how you gonna see em if you livin in the fog? DMX helped me through a lot of dark times. I love y’all so much! Always pick amazing songs.
My interpretation of the chorus was always this (remember:mine please). The snake (backstabber), the rat (snitch), the cat (friend), the dog (your day 1). How you gon' see em when you're living in the fog (how can you tell them apart when you're distracted by whatever drug/emotion/lifestyle). Be clear I took a few years to land here. That said I miss X 🙏
Damien is the Devil (or a version of X himself that is possessed by darkness...but ultimately DMX himself always makes his own decisions) ...DMX's albums were always pitting him in the middle between the Devil and him seeking forgiveness from God (Hence the prayers...which deserve a reaction all on their own).
And DMX did the voice of Damien in all the songs as well. Really talented brother. And if you ever hear DMX speak, naturally, he talks very much like how he raps. So it's not intentional in that sense; he raps the way he speaks.
@Loveitmanee How tf do you not know who Dolph is? Sheesh either you are like 8 years old or you are not a fan of Hip Hop. Dolph is one of the few artist from the past 10 years who has not embarrassed us as Hip Hop fans after they became famous.

You hear D ask for his guardian angel and Damien appears. Similar to how the devil appears at your weakest moment. Damien builds him up and puts D in a better life situation making him think Damien is his friend. For all the gifts and success, u hear Damien say 'but we gotta stay friends, blood out blood in'. And D replies 'F it, what I got to lose". Essentially making a deal with the devil. Then you hear D say he 'would bleed, give him my right hand'. Even before that, Damien tells him he sees everything explaining he knew D shot somebody over a woman when nobody else knew. Later, Damien puts D in a position where he either gets another soul, or makes him cut off his right hand like he promised.
I’ve always interpreted it as his inner thoughts, internal demon. Influenced by his past ,peer pressure & expectations of him and how he wants to seen by others.

I was exposed to this channel through an Immortal Technique react that popped up, and wow! It is refreshing to relive the music which shaped me in my formative years and through adolescence, through the both of you honoring the art of it all and depth which is delivered through it all.
X intentionally made Damiens voice sound like a possession like literally the voice in his head leading him on a path of self destructive behaviour & bad life choices, his message is clear, if you are within the fog how can u tell a good choice, therefore it's hard to make judgement. The snake represents the people who use you, the rat represents the people who tell on you or double cross you, the cat is the representation of people & one's u think could be down, the dog represents your friends & crew who is down with you then, now or forever. Great track. Timeless. 💙

The Damien tracks are so dope. X's story telling was just on another level. With that being said, by reacting to this song your fate is now sealed and you must complete the Damien trilogy 😈. Either do it or give me your right hand.
On DMX albums he has songs conversing with God & the Devil. Damien is apart of a trilogy where X deals with the repercussions of selling his soul. Listen to the The Omen next. It's a sequel to this track featuring Marilyn Manson. Then "Damien 3".
and Damien is indeed a reference to the devil that's why he sounds so sinister (fun fact Damien is also rapped by DMX) but DMX once said in an interview that in his experience he believed he had encounters with the devil on 3 different occasions in his life at that point and of each one of the encounters he wrote a song that's why Damien is a trilogy would love to see you react to the other songs by DMX like stop being greedy it's also like a back and forth song with his good and evil side also a very good song
I always liked the visuals I would get from the chorus of Stop being greedy. The analogy reminds me of Tupac's interview discussing poor people knocking on the door of the rich and being denied food repeatedly, until one day they force their way into the house and take the food out of starvation mode and not greedy mode.
Great track, surprised The Convo isn't on the list, that's maybe my favourite DMX song, after 2pac, DMX was the next artist to have that duality here both sides came off as authentic, the street/ruthless persona but at the same time spiritual.
dmx poetry its live and of the top of his head not scripted . dmx was more like a underground rapper who was signed he did what he wanted regardless of his label. him and tupac would be on top today if they both was alive and dmx didnt have a addiction
The entire song is about DMX selling his soul to the devil to become rich and famous, I love how he does both voices, you need to folllow up with Damien 2 and 3 to see the entire road they go down.
This song, The Convo and Stop Being Greedy showcase DMX taking on different personalities/beings in one song and rapping back n forth with that other personality/being.: The devil in Damien, God in The Convo and his bad side in Stop Being Greedy. Truly skilful but I think it also highlighted how much he was dealing with internally.
I had the unfortunate pleasure of managing the locations for his tribute with Ruff Ryders going from Yonkers to Manhattan. I got to visit his memorial in his buildings beforehand, then met up by Ruff Ryders Record Studio then began. What an emotional day! X will always be one if the absolute best at this craft called Hip Hop! RIP X
I actually really like your channel and your dad is so cool hahaha, i feel parents that are open to listen and understand Rap, Hip Hop will learn alot about "culture". We need some Andre 3000 as well, perhaps RIck Ross ft Andre 3000 - Sixteen on the cards Keep it up guys, yall are rocking
dmx poetry is almost like hes rapping with no beat or music behind it its genius he was a smart man and very talented he just had a bad drug addiction cocaine and crack was his demon
I love DMX. First time I listened to this CD cuz yes it was before streaming, I thought it was him giving into the bad angel in his shoulder. Like he's too the point where he spotted listening to the good angel. That's what the sound of that voice told me. Also, when you listen to DMX albums all the way through in order, it's so deep and it tells a story. You can't possibly get even close to that listening to just a song at a time and out of order. His albums are pretty much a long song yelling his story and thoughts through different times in his mostly dark journey. Even when I hear "Up In here" it's like it was a fun break for him real quick... which I think it's relevant to how his life was a he seemed to have only small moments of letting go and having fun. Then it was back to feeling that sadness and fighting addiction. If you know anything about that, you know he was truly a strong person and withstood things most ppl can't while truly trying to be good every single day.
Id really enjoy it if you guys reacted to "stop being greedy" by Dmx. It's more on the harder side. He raps from 2 diff personalities, his softer side that wants to enjoy his success & the other is more impatient wanting to take everything he wants.
DMX is my favorite rapper of all time! The first 6 albums? I listened to them so much! The 90's and early 2000's were the best time for Rap in my humble opinion. And I guess that is my favorite time because I'm old now... 🤪
Listening to this again right now and it has already grown on me. Such sincerity and grit in his rapping. And the conversation really highlights the theme. - Kai’s dad

Can y'all watch the other Damien tracks too?
I had the unfortunate pleasure of managing the locations for his tribute with Ruff Ryders going from Yonkers to Manhattan. I got to visit his memorial in his buildings beforehand, then met up by Ruff Ryders Record Studio then began. What an emotional day! X will always be one if the absolute best at this craft called Hip Hop!
RIP X
Haven't listened to this one in years. Another good video, you guys!
Yes!!!! I’ve been long awaiting for this i love Damien!
Damien 2 is great also. And the Convo is also a great track
Convo might be my favorite dmx track 👍
Your dad meant it’s coming from his heart to his mind. This song was written very quickly, it is inspired.
great song selection man - your dad is so cool, you're so lucky
I actually really like your channel and your dad is so cool hahaha, i feel parents that are open to listen and understand Rap, Hip Hop will learn alot about "culture".
These artist put their life in these music, one just has to listen and oh yeah, DMX is by far a great story teller.
We need some Andre 3000 as well, perhaps RIck Ross ft Andre 3000 - Sixteen on the cards
Keep it up guys, yall are rocking
After this and the follow through tracks.. You HAVE to do 'The CONVO'.. talking with GOD.. Same album! Brilliant!
Dmx ready to meet him it's a prayer in the beginning n gets deep when he gets rappin .. beautiful song 1 of favs the none mainstream stuff
Writing this before I even watch/listen to this reaction. This is the one I was waiting on and hoping you got to. Well, here I go!
Hope you enjoyed. - Kai’s dad
dmx poetry is almost like hes rapping with no beat or music behind it its genius he was a smart man and very talented he just had a bad drug addiction cocaine and crack was his demon
Let Me Fly is one of my favorites from that album
A reaction to this whole album would be super dope. A top 5 hiphop album of all time..
dmx stand up poetry please do a reaction. also dmx was on dr phil i think that would be a good reaction
You and your pop have a beautiful relationship. I wish more ppl could bond over music

Absolutely a classic. DMXs first two albums are certified classics
This is the one... Been waiting
Listening to this again right now and it has already grown on me. Such sincerity and grit in his rapping. And the conversation really highlights the theme. - Kai’s dad
My first cd I ever bought was DMX - The Flesh of my Flesh, The Blood of my Blood
DMX is also the first emcee (maybe artist period) to release 2 albums that both went platinum in a 1 year period.
Dark Man X is legend. These young jits don’t know there’s much more to him than Party Up/Who We Be/Ruff Ryders Anthem.
