What's so good about David Tennant's acting is that when he was describing Galifrey at the end of the episode, the look on his face makes it seem as though he was really there, that's what makes it so powerful; almost like he was gonna cry from feeling nostalgia.
I imagine you’ll be pleased to learn that David Tennant spent a good chunk of the filming for this one refusing to put the kittens down. Apparently he got quite attached. The description of Gallifrey and its orange skies and silver forests is taken right from a description the Doctors granddaughter gave way back in the original sixties run of episodes. After this episode went out when I was a kid I remember making a little tree out of tinfoil for my tenth Doctor action figure to sit under so he’d be less homesick.
I just absolutely love the relationship between the doctor and Martha and how she very much stands up for herself and demands to be given honest answers. It's such a good dynamic this season.
I love how Martha is perceptive enough to figure out she's the rebound girl in the middle of her second trip with the Doctor. Also, if you like angry Doctor, just wait until you meet furious Doctor.
Yeah this is a solid episode. Difference between Rose and Martha's reactions to past companions is Rose was never in someone else's shadow acting as the rebound while he pines away. Martha is annoyed about how blatant it is that she's just a rebound he isn't interested in. The return of the Face of Bo is a great moment. An ancient being relays a secret to another ancient being. However it's mysterious enough to not be immediately comprehensible. Yeah the description of Gallifrey and his emotions around it are the real highlight though. Silver leaves under an orange sky near a domed city. He makes it sound so majestic.
The macra are a Classic Who monster! It was so cool that they incorporated them into this story :) Also, the actor who plays Martha's mum was one of the cats who died in the last New New York episode!
6:31 I don’t know if I’m getting this fact right but I’m sure the crew had to spend so, so, so, so long waiting for the kitten to make small mouth movements just so they could dub the ‘mama’ over it to hammer home the fact they’re human/cat hybrids so can talk
Thankyou for another wonderful Doctor Who reaction video. I've seen a lot of reactors who never seem genuine in their reactions, but I never get that with you. You wear your heart on your sleeve and, when something affects you, you aren't afraid to show it. Please keep up the good work, Jules. You're great!
Mr Saxon!! Thank you so much for your kind words. I am so, so pleased you have been enjoying the episodes. It is really important that I am genuine and just myself so I am very happy you can see that, too 💜 I am so thankful for your lovely comment!! I hope you have a wonderful day 🥰
This episode always has me blubbing - all these people that were resigned to this, the older married couple having been there for over 20 years, seeing the sunlight and getting to fly up and be free sticks with me as one of the most beautiful moments of Doctor Who 🥹 Too bad they flew up to find out everyone else on the planet was dead 💀
'Everything has it's time'. Not just a poignant saying, but a reference to 'The End Of The World', when the Doctor said the same thing about Cassandra, and the Earth. Everything has it's time.
This episode always left quite an impression on me. The way the Doctor talking about Gallifrey, the way he gets so mad when Martha gets abducted. Martha pointing out the Doctor having a "rebound" is totally true, but even still Martha show she has faith in him. And of course, seeing The Head of Bo for the last time def got me emotional. "You Are Not Alone", what does that mean? On a different note, this is one of the surprisingly few examples of an explicitly non straight couple or even character, so that's something. Love this one for sure
@@theanyktos Yeah, Jack is one of the other examples and of course more prominent. It could happen more, but I'm still happy with most of the ones we have had though
I feel like it says a lot about the writers for this era of Doctor Who that they made an episode based around a comically exaggerated traffic jam, and apart from making it into an emotional roller coaster on its own, he also managed to write in the Face of Boe's death scene (that was actually originally going to be in New Earth, by the way), and also have this be the point where Martha decides she's not just going to blindly follow the script and gets the Doctor to talk to her honestly. And I find it really impressive that they did it all at a breakneck pace without wasting time or dropping any of those spinning plates.
God the irony and theming of sunlight in this episode just cuts so deep the adoring speech about his home "the burnt orange sky" that he cant return to, the hopeful singing from the passangers trapped in the undercity, the people freed seeing the sun for the first time as boe sees it for the last and that beautifully performed speech from tennant about galifrey with the hopeful music uncercutting it as he talks the music overflows and takes over as we see the burnt orange sky of new new york. Utterly fantastic and heart breaking. Great video keep em coming ❤
Another lovely reaction. I am so happy you included that final scene. So many people leave it out. It makes me cry every time. It is so beautiful, sitting there in that dirty alley.
I love this episode, David Tennant's acting in this is just amazing. There are some great moments, and that ending is just sublime. The Doctor really hit the nail on the head with the tell don't show philosophy when talking about Gallifrey. It might also interest you to know that the Macra that appeared in this episode are actually very old villains that first appeared in Classic Who. Although in this episode they are mere shells of what they once were. Great reaction by the way, I really like how emotionally invested you are. I can't help but shed a tear when the Face of Boe dies, even though we barely know him.
I did wonder if the Macra were from classic Who! They are SO cool! I'd love to see more of them. They wouldn't be out of place in a Fallout universe, I reckon! The ending was beautiful... I loved it 💜 such a great episode!!
Ohhh, this episode makes me cry every time! The emotional moments are so beautiful. I love that we meet much nicer cat people this time, too, and how we find out that they're born kittens and presumably... get more human later? 😂 It's mad and I'm totally here for it. Thank you! 🐈💖
There's also the lockdown short which has Novice Hame in it, where it's revealed that just off camera on New Earth there are also dog people, mouse people, dolphin people (It's an illustrated audio drama, basically)
It's really not fair of them to poke such fun at my home town. Driving in New York, to Brooklyn, is not _that_ bad. I used to do it every day. 45 minutes from my workplace in midtown Manhattan to my part of Brooklyn, 8 1/2 miles as the crow flies, but I've ran into jams that made it take two hours. As the joke goes, the radio stations only report that there's traffic if the cars are actually moving backwards.
@@jordanbridges I almost never hear anyone talk about it, and it never gets brought up as one of the greats of the Tennant Era the way Midnight, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Human Nature/Family of Blood or Waters of Mars do. I don’t think it’s *quite* as good as those but I feel it belongs in the same conversation.
Random thought about the couple with the kittens. I assume when they grow up they will be dads size. Can you imagine how crowded that car would be getting as soon as they got bigger or grew up?
Fun fact, I’m sure someone has already mentioned it, but the Macra (the crabs) are actually an obscure villain from the 60s from a lost episode called The Macra Terror which has recently been animated, along with several other lost episodes.
I ADORE this story. It's so criminally underrated by many in fandom but it's got some wonderfully bonkers "Hard sci-fi" ideas, a heap of kitsch, a tremendous line in emotion (the song always hits me) and a lovely thematic through line. It's one of my favourite RTD scripts.
I swear this episode is completely underrated. It’s never talked about among the greats and it’s a shame. It’s deeply emotional, great for expansion on who the Doctor is, nice pay off with the kitties from New Earth and those last words from the Face of Boe (“You are not alone.”) are so compelling. Really great stuff!
When I couldn't find anything to watch on RUclips and then Jules pops and I know I'm in for a treat, and you never let us down. I've said it once and it'll say it again - your reaction videos are the BEST 🥰🥰🥰
For a Face you've only seen in 3 episodes (4 if you count the cameo in The Long Game), they really do an amazing job of making The Face of Boe feel like an old friend, both to The Doctor and to the audience, setting us up for the perfect emotional gut punch when he sacrifices himself to save all those trapped people. But of course, not without one last cryptic parting statement... And then we get the emotional double whammy with The Doctor talking about Gallifrey. The misty-eyed expression as he recalls the silver trees under orange skies with such clarity. He can remember every detail like it was yesterday, even though he's over 900 years old. He must wish so desperately to see it again. I always enjoyed the side-characters in this episode too, such as Novice Hame and Brannigan. Lastly, I also really like Martha taking a stand and demanding a little respect and honesty from The Doctor. She deserves that much. You might want to look up the behind the scenes show Doctor Who Confidential for this episode, since as someone else has said there's more footage of David Tennant cuddling kittens.
So the Macra are quite a callback; they only turned up in a serial broadcast in 1967, one of the lost episodes. However, there is an animated version you can see now.
To clarify a point someone has already made...The Macra appeared in the Second Doctor story The Macra Terror. They lived of certain gases poisonous to humans, hence they're living at the bottom of the motor way. In Troughton's era they had conquered a human colony, forcing the human to mine a gas found on the planet, as well as the occasional human. As noted in this episode, they devolved from the intelligent species they used to be to become a race of predators that operate purely on instinct. A little side note is that The Macra Terror was the first story to use the once traditional title sequence featuring the current Doctor's face. :D And a casting note about the next two episodes...Without giving away any spoilers, once of the supporting characters is played by an actor who went on to feature in one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed Marvel movies of all time. I really, really wish I could tell you more, but I believe you will be positively delighted when you see this actor for the first time. :D
I loved seeing the Macra! They were absolutely incredible! I've watched the next two episodes and I finally recognised an actor haha! It rarely happens to me, but I feel so pleased to finally know someone 🤣 I RARELY know any of the actors that people have mentioned so this was a rare treat!
@@julesreacts I just want to say thanks for taking the time to reply to all your comments. There aren't many reactors who go to the trouble of replying to more than the first dozen or two, but I've yet to see a comment you haven't responded to in some way. Being so engaged with your followers will most definitely help you channel grow, as it should. :D
Thank you!! I really try to reply to as many as I can, as I do love reading and replying. Some weeks are busier than others and I don't have as much time, but I do try very hard 💜
Fun fact: This was actually the first time in the Modern Series that they brought back a one off Classic Who villain, The Macra, they're from the 2nd Doctor story "The Macra Terror"
I think this is a great capstone to the Face of Boe/New Earth trilogy. It's great how, despite this being our second trip to New Earth, it feels so different to our previous trip there. The plot feels like something from a dystopian '70s sci-fi novel, full of social commentary, and there's a genuine, tactile threat about it, especially with Martha being kidnapped. The Macra are such a random deep cut and I love that they were included here. 😆 They only actually appeared in a single classic Who story - a Second Doctor story from 1967 called 'The Macra Terror' - but back then they were actually intelligent, so it's interesting seeing these primitive versions that have devolved over time. Of course, the heart(s) of the story is Martha forcing the Doctor to talk about Gallifrey. David Tennant is just perfect when he talks fondly about Gallifrey, he manages to convey so many emotions at once. You have to imagine that some of his fanboyness was shining through there. As for the Face of Boe, we may have hardly known him, but we went on a journey with him and his death is so sad. Then there's that cryptic message: "You are not alone...". Hmm...I wonder what that could mean. 🤔 Oh and as a cat lover Jules, you might be pleased to know that the Sixth Doctor actually wore a cat brooch as part of his costume; the final story of classic Who actually heavily revolved around cats; and in the novels of the '90s, the Seventh Doctor actually had a cat in the TARDIS for a time.
Ashley!! I love your cat facts, thank you 😻 that is so lovely to know and actually makes me interested and excited to experience classic Who! I'm not sure if I'd react to them unless I manage to finish one of the shows I'm watching at the moment, but I'd dearly love to experience the older episodes. Especially Sarah Jane 🥰 I love that you appreciated the Gallifrey moment as well... it's so beautiful. He captured the essence of it so perfectly. This really was such a wonderful episode with so many outstanding moments! Especially the kittens 😋 Enjoy your Friday, Ashley! All the best for the weekend 🙌
Jules, there are things you obviously can’t know having started with Doctor 9 but I’m going to suggest an odd half-remedy: watch the first episode of each Doctor (1-8) to get the flavor of each Doctor and a taste of the production. Not as reaction vids, just for your background. The Time War the Doctor refers to took place immediately before Doctor 9’s appearance. He wasn’t around long before he the Rose episode (no idea exactly how long).
Juliette, I don't know if anyone has clued you in yet, but the couple in old fashioned garb at the beginning are from a very famous painting called American Gothic. If you search for "American Gothic" you'll get a good look at them. Now the question of why Doctor Who decided to put them in at the beginning of this episode is anyone's guess. haha So, in the future, humans will be able to reproduce with "cats". Maybe better to not think about that too much.🤪
Ah, yes! I'm familiar with that painting! It's certainly a classic 💜 Look, I wouldn't say no to having some kittens.... maybe.... is that weird?! haha!
I was looking to see if anyone else caught the American Gothic reference!😄Kudos! While a student at the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago I worked daily in the museum next door sometimes spending eight to ten hours in the America’s wing in the gallery with Grant Wood’s painting!😊 I think the man in the Bowler hat, and suit on the Expressway that the Doctor encounters in this episode may have been reference to surrealist René Magritte who frequently painted subjects in this garb in his dreamlike paintings, and other characters loosely related to other paintings/artist. Just a theory- haven’t researched it! 😄⏱️🌌🟦Cheers- Jameson
@@Jameson_Visual_Arts_Studios That's amazing! I've never seen the painting in person and my knowledge of art is minimal at best, but it's so iconic that I'm surprised more people didn't catch it. I've been re-watching these episodes as Juliette makes her way through them and I hadn't seen this episode since it's original airing in the States, but I did recall realizing who the old couple was supposed to depict all those years ago. I just watched the next episode and much to my surprise saw a young actor who I didn't know back then, but I certainly do now!!
This episode wasn’t one of my favourites back in the day, but loved it this time round and Jules reaction. So much more to come and look forward in joining you all for the best Dr Who episodes to watch with you all again. Thank you Julies x x
This was a mediocre episode until the end where Martha said cut the crap and talk to me like an adult. Then the doctor finally opened up rather than just kept running from adventure to adventure. One of the many reasons I adore Martha, she not only doesn’t take his crap, but she will flat out tell him to act right. Just what he needs. And yeah the doctor holding a kitty with a ribbon around her neck is so stinking adorable it’s nigh criminal.
Such a gorgeous episode and a sublime reaction!!! This episode was one of my Nan’s favourites and she always used to cry when the people on the motorway started singing. I never used to cry watching this episode, but I do every time now.
There are lots of kitties😻😻 aren't they wonderful, Texman?! They are sooo cute! I think I'm getting more and more obsessed with cats as the years go by! I bought a calendar for next year, even though I don't really use wall calendars, but I couldn't say no because it was cat themed 🤣
Wonderful job. We were all excited to see the kittens, we thought we'd have to mute the sound when you saw them if you squee'd to loud, lol. The ducklings and goats both love.cats too. They spend.a.k t of time with our 3 barn cats. The ducklings are getting rather large. I may have to start calling them ducks. Have a wonderful rest of your week.
Oooh Cat! It will be a sad day when the ducklings are now known as ducks 😭 How they have grown! I feel I've been following their journey from the beginning.... but they must grow and we will always remember them as the cute little babies they once were! I'm glad the weather report might not be as bad as predicted... Thank goodness! Stay safe, and look after your flock 💜
One of the advantages of having a fan for showrunner: those Crabs answered a request for a visible antagonist. Russell suggested Second Doctor monsters The Macra - who could live in the fumes of an industrial colony, thus the bottom of this freeway.
Very minor thing, but the Macra are a classic Who villain from a fairly obscure 2nd Doctor serial - The Macra Terror. They're sapient in that one, while they're more bestial here.
David Tennant does SUCH a good job at portraying the loneliness and sadness in The Doctor. When he talks about Gallifrey, you really get the feeling that he truly did love that planet. And the way Freema portrays Martha is just perfect. I really love the dynamic between them both.
And now it's clear that you truly appreciate one of the key pillars of the Doctor's character: he is the Last. It's the reason he's sad at his core and approaches life with a type of mania; it's the reason he keeps human companions; and it's the reason he runs. 😔
Doctor Who is so great… I love watching when people legit cry because they are torn up by a character death, when we step back and look how silly the creature looks without any context - but just like it does with you, it did with me … bringing out all the feels 😊🥲
HA! Yes, it is a bit weird to feel so sad for just a head, but he meant something to us 😭 I don't know what or why, but I was just so drawn to him! So sad to say goodbye!!
It's Doctor Who Wednesday again here today and I remember watching this episode when they were in the traffic jam a few years back but i don't quite remember how it ended though but I'm glad to see it again here thank you my friend Juliette.🇦🇺📺📺🇦🇺
I was looking forward to when you got this this one and what your theories would be regarding the meaning of the Face of Boe's last words. There are definitely a few possibilities so you'll have to see how that turns out. It was interesting hearing the Doctor describe Gallifrey and the Time Lord Citadel (along with how Martha imagined the architecture) while thinking about the cheap sets and models used in the classic series, as well as how now they're all gone the Doctor is remembering his people in a very nostalgic light compared to how his relationship with them when they were around had always been... complicated.
I guess we will have to wait and see what Boe means by his cryptic message 🤔 it could really mean several things and I'm looking forward to one day finding out more! It was very sad to say goodbye to Boe... I really liked him 😢
this is one of my favourite episodes, everything is really fantastic. the endless motorway to an empty city is such a cool concept, really haunting and super cyberpunk. i love all the cars, how each one is just oozing with personality, like each is its own little world reflecting their passengers. and brannigan is such a standout, hes delightful
This is one of my favorite episodes, mostly because it takes a bonkers premise, and makes it an emotional and thought-provoking story. That's what I love most about sci-fi. Thanks for the reaction! 🙂
The first half of season 3 is not great imho, but this is the exception, a brilliant, creative, odd story and Tennant is brilliant in it. If I’m honest, watching again Tennant can get a bit too silly at times in this season, but he gets it totally right here. Lots of Who lore too- the Face of Boe, the Macra…. Great stuff (Ps, I’m sure others have said this, but you really should watch classic Who to get the full picture of it all. Plus so much of it is good to awesome)
So long ago, I had forgotten about "You are not alone". The Macra are a callback to a really old episode "The Macra Terror" from 1967. I do recall being a bit disappointed that the story did nothing with them except make them into the big scary CGI monsters living under all the traffic.
Always one of my favourite episodes this one. Not quite sure why, but it always felt like a nice little episode. Enjoyed watching you react to this. I know I've said this before, but watching you react to this on Wednesday night/Thursday morning has become a highlight of my week. Thank you again for all your hard work, Jules. It doesn't go unappreciated.
The most memorable thing about this episode is the kitties 🥺🐱 I love how this ties into the New New Earth and builds more of that world. The best thing about the Russell T Davies era is the world building. The whole universe feels living and breathing in this series 😊 I hope you're enjoying the ride so far, I'm enjoying watching along with you 💖
One thing that Doctor Who does so well is crank up the emotions in an instant. Good episode, brief instances of high emotions until...wham! They turn the emotions all the way up to 10 (see what I did there? *grin).
I'd forgotten how good this episode is. So emotional and Martha's realisation that they're visiting places he's been with Rose is just ouch. The monologue at the end with the Doctor talking about Galifrey and the Time War is such sterling acting from David Tennant.. And the death of the Face of Boe just kills me. Brannigan is played by Ardal O'Hanlon, a well known Irish comedian and I remember thinking when I first saw the episode, 'hang on, I know that voice' but it took me a while to realise who it was under the cat makeup. Good stuff as always, Jules - I knew you'd love the kittens :)
I have always liked this episode. Not quite sure why, just feels like a nice little enyry. Enjoyed watching you react to this. I know I've said this before, but watching you on Wednesday night/Thursday morning has become one of the highlights of my week. Your hard work making these doesn't go unappreciated.
If the Judoon a couple of episodes ago were a nod to Judge Dredd, this one is evn.more deliberately so. From the gridlocked traffic in a highrise megacity full of odd folk, to a cameo inspired by Max Normal the Pinstripe Freak, plus the holographic travel news lady was inspired by Swifty Frisko from Halo Jones, as also seen in 2000AD.
Who-heeey, congratulations! You've finally got there! Having tears while watching Who. Like, remember back in season 1 when the farting aliens were trying to take over the world? Would you have believed back then, at that moment, that this is gonna be one of those shows that slowly but surely will pull you in... really nice, quiet and soft.... and then hit ya with the actual emotion bomb? I for one didn't, I just expected this to be one of those silly adventure series. ...And that's how the show gets you. It lets you come in, near and close, and then it stabs your heart when you least expect it, and even twists the knife a bit on a good day.
Knew this episode was coming up but wasn't sure when. Was hoping you would remember the Face of Boe and the Cat people. In timey-whimey style, you never know how the future will be, whether it will be a dystopia or a opia.
A very interesting analysis of the Doctor, Jules. Very perceptive as well. In trying to forget about his past by not talking about it, as you said, he gives the impression of being closed off.
The way the Doctor talks about Galifrey in the RTD era is really interesting because it’s such a break from how it was presented in the Classic Who era of the first eight Doctors. In those days, the Doctor always tended to have an “omg what do you knobheads want *now?* 🙄” attitude whenever other Time Lords were part of the story or he was summoned back home. It went from being a very generic place that happened to be the Doctor’s home where everyone wore big silly hats and were very angry at him all the time for being a very naughty boy, to somewhere talked about in ethereal or godlike terms. 9 and 10 have a lot more open reverence for Galifrey, because when they speak about it you picture this wise, ancient, noble place where peace was maintained and even it physically sounds like heaven. But now it’s gone, reapers can infect time wounds and travel between parallel worlds is impossible. And to a certain extent, you can understand why as everyone has rose tinted glasses for people, times and places when they were at their best yet in spite of everything we saw in Classic Who, the loss of Galifrey on the Doctor is a clear and profound one as he deeply wishes they were back. There’s just a mystery and aura to Galifrey that only came about at the start of this era because as much as the Doctor was a free spirit and didn’t conform to the rules of their society, it was still his home and its loss on him as the Last of the Time Lords weighs on him heavily and is what keeps him travelling while also being so focused on the Earth, because it’s the only home he has left.
The ending is what immediately got me loving Martha more as a companion over Rose, for me anyway. Think it’s real smart and strong of her to ask for the truth. Rose just let the Doctor kinda wash over her and go along with him and his secrets. In the End of the World episode, there was a brief row between Rose and the Doctor when she was like “Tell me who you are” and Nine snapped back and kept his walls up. Martha gave him no choice, pulled up a chair and was like “Mate no secrets, be honest with me” and Ten does decide to lower his walls and open up. Great ending, good episode too, real fun, Brannigan is so much fun, Novice Hame is wonderful, the Macra even though not the biggest deal in the episode were great to see again returning as classic Who enemies from the Second Doctor’s era.
Great reaction. I appreciate Martha demanding respect and truth before she'll continue on with the Doctor. It was brave too, because he could choose to leave her if he wanted.
As much as I liked Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor (I really, really did, and still do), and also feel that he’s seriously overlooked in the role, but David Tennant is just absolutely brilliant as The Doctor. He has such great chemistry with his companions, and even with the villains.
What's so good about David Tennant's acting is that when he was describing Galifrey at the end of the episode, the look on his face makes it seem as though he was really there, that's what makes it so powerful; almost like he was gonna cry from feeling nostalgia.
It was SUCH an emotional moment!
He does a great job at portraying a man, holding back a torrent of emotions. Something that a lot of guys are quite experienced at doing.
@@Elurin a lot of men wouldn’t be able to act out that scene the way he did

The return of the Face of Bo is a great moment. An ancient being relays a secret to another ancient being. However it's mysterious enough to not be immediately comprehensible.
Yeah the description of Gallifrey and his emotions around it are the real highlight though. Silver leaves under an orange sky near a domed city. He makes it sound so majestic.

It hits so much more when you eventually learn the true identity of him too.
The macra are a Classic Who monster! It was so cool that they incorporated them into this story :)
Also, the actor who plays Martha's mum was one of the cats who died in the last New New York episode!

This Macra is small. That Macra is far away...
I mean... Jack is a pretty prominent non straight character from before this point in the series. And there've been quite a few others since.
I really liked Brannigan in this episode, plus this is a pretty thought-provoking episode, all told.
I love this episode, one of RTD’s underrated gems. Another terrific outing for David Tennant, especially the scene at the end👏🏻
Such wonderful moments in this episode!
YES! Wasn't that imagery so delightful? Such a brilliant moment.... My goodness, it's wonderful!
Thank you 💜
You know Julia is in for a treat when there's cats involved! Haha
Goodbye Face of Bo, you were a good egg
Another lovely reaction. I am so happy you included that final scene. So many people leave it out. It makes me cry every time. It is so beautiful, sitting there in that dirty alley.
Aww thank you, Sally! The final scene was just so magical 🥰
Thank you! 🐈💖
I really loved this episode, too! It had some beautiful moments and gorgeous kittens... sigh 🥰
There's also the lockdown short which has Novice Hame in it, where it's revealed that just off camera on New Earth there are also dog people, mouse people, dolphin people (It's an illustrated audio drama, basically)
This is still my favourite episode, the scene with everyone singing made me weepy and the ending just, got me, the first time I watched it.
🤣🤣🤣 yes, that's really not fair haha!
Such a brilliant ending, David Tennant's acting is off the charts!
The ending was SO beautiful 😭🥰
I so love this episode, it's a little bit dark but full of a bright hope. I rewatch it when I need some hope.
Incredibly underrated episode. I think this one is a genuine classic.
I wouldn't say it's underrated... it's rated at 8/10 on imdb and loved by most every whovian.
@@jordanbridges I almost never hear anyone talk about it, and it never gets brought up as one of the greats of the Tennant Era the way Midnight, Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead, Human Nature/Family of Blood or Waters of Mars do.
I don’t think it’s *quite* as good as those but I feel it belongs in the same conversation.
this one does not just ride the motorway , it rides your emotions
With the amount of mood gummy commercials I see on almost every RUclips video now I'd say this episode was quite prophetic
Haha! Nice 🤣 I haven't seen those ads!
Random thought about the couple with the kittens. I assume when they grow up they will be dads size. Can you imagine how crowded that car would be getting as soon as they got bigger or grew up?
Maybe they are hoping to get out of the tunnel before then haha
I've said it once and it'll say it again - your reaction videos are the BEST 🥰🥰🥰
the face of boes theme song towards the end is beautiful
The Macra first appeared in 1967, in a serial called "The Macra Terror".
I thought they might have been from classic Who! They are very cool!
This series is one of my favourites, it's so tightly plotted. You're gonna have a lot of fun with this one. Martha, ❤
I'm so happy the cat people redeemed themselves for you here :D
YES!! Finally 🤣
So the Macra are quite a callback; they only turned up in a serial broadcast in 1967, one of the lost episodes. However, there is an animated version you can see now.
love the bits and pieces of info we get as the series goes on.
You've got to look up the video of David Tennant playing with the kittens, he adopted one of them after the filming
And a casting note about the next two episodes...Without giving away any spoilers, once of the supporting characters is played by an actor who went on to feature in one of the most critically and commercially acclaimed Marvel movies of all time.
Fun fact:
This was actually the first time in the Modern Series that they brought back a one off Classic Who villain, The Macra, they're from the 2nd Doctor story "The Macra Terror"
Nice! I really enjoyed them!
Oh and as a cat lover Jules, you might be pleased to know that the Sixth Doctor actually wore a cat brooch as part of his costume; the final story of classic Who actually heavily revolved around cats; and in the novels of the '90s, the Seventh Doctor actually had a cat in the TARDIS for a time.
Ashley!! I love your cat facts, thank you 😻 that is so lovely to know and actually makes me interested and excited to experience classic Who! I'm not sure if I'd react to them unless I manage to finish one of the shows I'm watching at the moment, but I'd dearly love to experience the older episodes. Especially Sarah Jane 🥰
I love that you appreciated the Gallifrey moment as well... it's so beautiful. He captured the essence of it so perfectly. This really was such a wonderful episode with so many outstanding moments! Especially the kittens 😋
Enjoy your Friday, Ashley!
Honestly, that's a great idea! I need to get my hands on the classic series!
Juliette, I don't know if anyone has clued you in yet, but the couple in old fashioned garb at the beginning are from a very famous painting called American Gothic. If you search for "American Gothic" you'll get a good look at them. Now the question of why Doctor Who decided to put them in at the beginning of this episode is anyone's guess. haha
So, in the future, humans will be able to reproduce with "cats". Maybe better to not think about that too much.🤪
Ah, yes! I'm familiar with that painting! It's certainly a classic 💜
Look, I wouldn't say no to having some kittens.... maybe.... is that weird?! haha!
I was looking to see if anyone else caught the American Gothic reference!😄Kudos! While a student at the School Of The Art Institute Of Chicago I worked daily in the museum next door sometimes spending eight to ten hours in the America’s wing in the gallery with Grant Wood’s painting!😊
I think the man in the Bowler hat, and suit on the Expressway that the Doctor encounters in this episode may have been reference to surrealist René Magritte who frequently painted subjects in this garb in his dreamlike paintings, and other characters loosely related to other paintings/artist.
Og my god I've just realised the cat man is the young priest from father ted
Great reaction, always well edited, your enjoying the doctor more and more. Martha is great.
Thank you so much, Brian!! I am so glad you enjoyed. Have a wonderful day!
This one is one of the most underrated episodes of Tennants run.
This episode wasn’t one of my favourites back in the day, but loved it this time round and Jules reaction. So much more to come and look forward in joining you all for the best Dr Who episodes to watch with you all again. Thank you Julies x x
i;M actuallly friendy with the guy playing Branigan. lovely man.
Dylan, thank you so much 💜
I was told there was Kitties in this episode!🥰🐱😅🤣Great episode thanks so much Juliette💞
The weather report.changed, it might just.be cold, about -3c ish. We've stocked.up on heating.
Love The Doctors description of Galifrey at the end of the episode, you can picture the planet in your mind so clearly, what an actor David Tennant is
Wasn't it beautiful 😍
Imagine everyone who took forget and meets their family which they have forgotten and moved on from
One of the advantages of having a fan for showrunner: those Crabs answered a request for a visible antagonist.
The part where she found out that The Doctor has taken her to the same place he did with Rose, make you wonder if he just trying see her as Rose.
It's possible! He does miss her a lot!
And now it's clear that you truly appreciate one of the key pillars of the Doctor's character: he is the Last. It's the reason he's sad at his core and approaches life with a type of mania; it's the reason he keeps human companions; and it's the reason he runs. 😔
The Lonely Doctor 😢
Doctor Who is so great… I love watching when people legit cry because they are torn up by a character death, when we step back and look how silly the creature looks without any context - but just like it does with you, it did with me … bringing out all the feels 😊🥲
HA! Yes, it is a bit weird to feel so sad for just a head, but he meant something to us 😭 I don't know what or why, but I was just so drawn to him! So sad to say goodbye!!
It's Doctor Who Wednesday again here
today and I remember watching this episode when they were in the traffic jam a few years back but i don't quite remember how it ended though but I'm
glad to see it again here thank you my friend Juliette.🇦🇺📺📺🇦🇺
I really liked him 😢
24:54 Really cool observation you have there.
One never knows what one might find!
I was waiting for the reaction to the kittens! I knew you were going to enjoy that bit! ❤
this is one of my favourite episodes, everything is really fantastic. the endless motorway to an empty city is such a cool concept, really haunting and super cyberpunk. i love all the cars, how each one is just oozing with personality, like each is its own little world reflecting their passengers. and brannigan is such a standout, hes delightful
This is one of my favorite episodes, mostly because it takes a bonkers premise, and makes it an emotional and thought-provoking story. That's what I love most about sci-fi. Thanks for the reaction! 🙂
Thank you for watching, Pete! I'm so glad you enjoyed 💜
Great stuff
(Ps, I’m sure others have said this, but you really should watch classic Who to get the full picture of it all. Plus so much of it is good to awesome)
this is one of my favourite episodes. it kinda tends to get lost in the shuffle but i think it's amazing.
So long ago, I had forgotten about "You are not alone". The Macra are a callback to a really old episode "The Macra Terror" from 1967. I do recall being a bit disappointed that the story did nothing with them except make them into the big scary CGI monsters living under all the traffic.
I would LOVE to see more of the Macra!
Oooh I thought I'd replied to your comment! I'll blame youtube for being silly 😤
Thank you for your kind words 💜
I think the fault is entirely mibem I seem to have posted the same message twice. But, if anyone deserves the same compliment, it is you.
The most memorable thing about this episode is the kitties 🥺🐱
I love how this ties into the New New Earth and builds more of that world. The best thing about the Russell T Davies era is the world building.
The whole universe feels living and breathing in this series 😊 I hope you're enjoying the ride so far, I'm enjoying watching along with you 💖
Thank you!! That is so lovely of you to say! The kittens were a highlight for sure 🥰
(Typed at the moment you reacted to the Face of Boe's death) Oh Jues! Your reactions always make me see the depth and warmth of DW.. Thank you xx
Why did he have to die 😭😭 Thank you for the kind words, Harmony 💜
I like the interweaving of episodes. it makes the timey wimey stuff more fun.
I like it, too!!
One thing that Doctor Who does so well is crank up the emotions in an instant. Good episode, brief instances of high emotions until...wham! They turn the emotions all the way up to 10 (see what I did there? *grin).
ALL the way up, indeed!! Such a great episode with brilliant moments!!
This was one of my favorite Dr Who Episodes. I'd put this right above the Madame De Pompador episode.
Oh wow, that is awesome!!
Ahh thank you so much!! It's a pleasure to have someone as positive as you here 💜
Love this episode. Definitely one of my favorites. Right up there with the library in season 4. 2 parter worth every second
Awesome video as always! i didnt love this ep when it first aired yet watching this it it brought a tear to my eye!
Aww thank you!! It was such a great episode with very emotional moments, too😭
If the Judoon a couple of episodes ago were a nod to Judge Dredd, this one is evn.more deliberately so. From the gridlocked traffic in a highrise megacity full of odd folk, to a cameo inspired by Max Normal the Pinstripe Freak, plus the holographic travel news lady was inspired by Swifty Frisko from Halo Jones, as also seen in 2000AD.
ever since i found your channel a little over a month ago ive been really excited every week to see these videos :)
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you so much!
given i have seen ALL (inc. classics) doctor who episodes and know about gallifry, it sounds amazing when david talks about it
It really does.... I loved that moment.
@@julesreacts yh, i love the way the planet looks, i wish it was real, i'd stay forever, if i was allowed to
Who-heeey, congratulations!
I definitely remembered both! It was lovely to see them again, but the last time we saw Boe, I knew this time would then be the last 😭😭
To quote Classic Who "There is no such thing as Macra! Macra do not exist! There are no Macra!"
OH! Someone else commented that and I was confused haha now I get it!
A very interesting analysis of the Doctor, Jules. Very perceptive as well. In trying to forget about his past by not talking about it, as you said, he gives the impression of being closed off.
He is SUCH an interesting person! So enigmatic... I am genuinely intrigued by him! Thank you, Ron 💜
I caught up to your reactions and I swear I never clicked on anything faster
It feels like a case of, you don't know appreciate what you have till it's gone.
When this came out I thought she gave birth to those kittens..... I was right
They were SO cute!!
Yeah, at least they're mammals and cute...
I will forget the strangeness because of their cuteness 😂
Literally look forward to your reactions every week.
Thank you!! That is so lovely of you to say!
Great reaction.
I appreciate Martha demanding respect and truth before she'll continue on with the Doctor. It was brave too, because he could choose to leave her if he wanted.
Thank you so much!!
As much as I liked Christopher Eccleston as the 9th Doctor (I really, really did, and still do), and also feel that he’s seriously overlooked in the role, but David Tennant is just absolutely brilliant as The Doctor. He has such great chemistry with his companions, and even with the villains.
Agreed! David is phenomenal!
Awesome reactions from Jules, to one of what I call " perfect " episodes of New Who.
Thank you, Kieron!
