We lost one of our horses to a ruptured splenic tumor. Everything happens very fast with these. Thanks for the explanation. I realize the numbers aren’t the same for horses but since getting a horse to surgery is far harder I imagine the survival rate is extremely low.
I adopted a 10 y/o chihuahua, and she was emaciated. Nothing I did would put weight on her. She developed intermittent bouts of not wanting to eat. I was in vet ER two weekends in a row. Thankfully, the vet at the 2nd visit suggested I get an abdominal U/S, because her liver values were off. Well, her liver was fine, but there was a tiny mass on her tiny spleen. 😞 Long story, but I opted to have her spleen removed, and she recovered like a champ. Her pathology took awhile and a PCR test to come to a diagnosis. She has a very rare indolent (slow progressing) B-cell lymphoma. NOT the dreaded Hemangiosarcoma, so I was relieved. She has gone for follow up U/S and bloodwork with an Oncologist and I'm happy to report that she is still cancer-free nearly 2 years later. She has one more U/S this year to get to the 2 year mark. I am soooooo happy I proceeded with the surgery while her mass was tiny (literally measured in millimeters, rather than centimeters. She is happy and healthy now, and I have zero regrets about doing the surgery. I realize that I am very fortunate, as many other dogs are not so lucky.
Excellent, excellent video. So informative. My dog has a life threatening condition for which he's taking 3 medications and he's living longer and happier than anyone predicted. My whole family is so grateful for our wonderful veterinarian. My dog is the best psychiatrist in the world.
My heart-dog died from this. It has been over a decade and my husband and I still cry when we talk about our Gus. He was the best dog I ever had. We put him down when they told us (after 2 specialists and 6K in bills) that he would literally suffocate if the tumors ruptured. We let him take a nap with his best buddy (our cat) and then we said goodbye. I miss him every day.😢
Our dog, dachshund, had a benine anal gland tumer, our vet caught it early. Incidentally, when doing an ultrasound to see if cancer had spread (prior to surgery), they noticed his spleen was prone to rupture do to an indent or something, so they removed that too (per our authorization). He lived another 4 years up to 16, before we had to put him down.
Hemangiosarcoma is the cancer that killed our pooch- the sweet girl in my avatar. She was perfectly fine until she wasn't. By the time it was detected, there was nothing, realistically, we could do except take her home and spoil her. When the end finally came, it was horrible. I still miss her every day.
I had a cat that died from this type of tumor. She had stopped eating, so I took her to the vet on a Friday. He felt a tumor, but she was weak, so he scheduled the surgery for Monday and told me to try to get her to eat and drink so she'd be OK for surgery. She didn't even make it through the night. It was devastating.
@@ferretyluv Yes. The ONLY other symptom until she stopped eating was that she wanted to be with me more than usual. She was probably in pain and looking for comfort.
Thank you so much for making this video! I just had my cat pass away from a hemangiosarcoma (yes, the one more present in large dogs and is rare in cats) less than two weeks ago and was shocked. We had a necropsy done due to how sudden it was. Weirder yet, she had a full blood panel done a week before she passed, and the vet herself said my lady cat was incredibly healthy (she had just turned 12 and people often said she looked half her age). The vet was just as surprised as I was. There were no symptoms, she was energetic and eating well. My husband and I had just come home and she was collapsed and had foam coming out of her mouth. I thought it was a grand mal seizure and we got her to the vet in 10 minutes, but she had already passed. This video answered a few questions I had, so thank you. I feel more at peace now.
We lost a dog in November last year from a ruptured splenic cancer. Unfortunately, because of her size and how much blood shed lost, we couldn't save her. The only way we knew it was there was because the vet did an ultrasound, we couldnt feel it, neither could the vet. She'd been at the vet 2 weeks before and she was healthy, like you said, we went to get ready for bed, came to check on her and she was lied down breathing funny, literally gone for 2 minutes, we got her to the vet so fast but it was too late. She had to be pts 😭 I had never even heard of them
A good video and info that needs to be out there. Hemangio sucks. It's prevalent in our breed. I came home from work to find my 10.5 yr old dog crashing. Got him in the car, calling ER on the way telling them I was pretty sure he had hemangio and was bleeding out. They rushed him back. ER Vet came out to talk to me, asked me why I told them what I thought was going on, went through everything I saw (lethargic, pale gums/barely any CRT, squishy belly, and knowledge of health issue in the breed) and proceeded to tell me that I nailed it - he had a ruptured splenic tumor. I really did not want to be right. That really wasn't the way I wanted to lose my old boy, but at his age and condition, it was the kindest thing I could do.
I lost my 11yo golden to this in May 2023. She was fine until she wasn't. Took her to the vet, the U/S showed tumors on her spleen & liver. The vet said she probably wouldn't last through the night. Horrible to have to make the decision when she seemed fine the day before.
Ok so I have very beloved rescue pets and one is a Pyrenees and he has the most sensitive stomach I’ve ever seen. We have tried so so many foods and I’m having so much trouble w that he’s healthy as a horse other wise he’s 2 years old. Does anyone know a good brand that’s not gonna make me go in debt😂. I’m a single mom raising my son and my 2 rescue dogs and four rescue kitties🫶 I’ll list the ones we’ve tried since I’ve adopted him. Any suggestions are much appreciated. That’s the problem with cats. They don’t show symptoms until it’s too late.

A friend's dog is dealing with this now. She is doing ok so far.

I don't know why I'm watching this when I work as a radiology assistant and see like 7-10 ultrasounds a day lol
Sometimes it’s interesting to hear things re-explained. And it can also make you feel smart when you understand everything in the video.
Lost my heart dog to splenic cancer. Nasty stuff.
Is there an average age for things to start happening?

Just try everything except Haartz. We feed our dog Purino proplan.
Your vet might be able to help. They see everything so could suggest options for your fluffy friend.
