    I am one of those people that can toss everything. I can’t handle clutter in my house it makes me anxious so everything has to have a home or it’s gone. I like to also toss/donate anything that hasn’t been used in a year. Just imagine you have to move and maybe that will help you decide what is worth keeping. Good luck!!

    • @MyLifeUnderRenovation
      @MyLifeUnderRenovation  8 месяцев назад +1

      I so admire and am jealous of that mindset! 😉 Maybe I’ll get there someday! 🤞 My clutter gives me anxiety too but I also feel so torn getting rid of things at times. I’m extremely sentimental, artsy, and always have a project in the works, so I tend to keep all the things! But I love what you said about pretending I’m about to move…I actually did that after we first moved here and it was SOO helpful! Then I feel like our house and kid stuff just ballooned and multiplied!
      Thank you so much for watching and for these helpful ideas! 💗

    In the 10 years I oversaw my mother's care while working a full-time 40-60 hour work week, commuting 3 hours a day and running my hobby farm by myself my house became overwhelmed with things I didn't have time for. Then when my mom died I acquired all her stuff. A year after I retired I started the purge and it took me four very long years. I started with finding and discarding trash. I then went room by room removing anything to donate or sell. The last step was organizing what was left. I took days away when I needed to for my mental health or to give my back a break. Some days I could only manage a single drawer. I asked for help when I felt overwhelmed and when it was finally done I rewarded myself with a Dyson vacuum, something I wanted for a very long time. My advice is set realistic goals, you won't get all done in one day.

      Wow!!! That sounds exhausting! You were a busy lady to handle being a caretaker, the work and commuting, a little farm, and just life in general.
      I love your system and plan of attack for decluttering and going through things. And a Dyson vacuum is an awesome reward! My reward is the fun makeover I have planned! 💗

    Firstly Shannon, well done you on, not only tackling your room/clutter, but also for being brave enough to post it on your channel.
    I become overwhelmed/ anxious if I have too much ‘stuff’. It’s just how I was created. I’m always decluttering my home and I know I’m lucky to be this way.
    Anyway, what you’ve achieved today , is brilliant and getting your kids involved, is something that I always do and hopefully they will continue to use the skills they are learning, as they grow up. Also, they always enjoy selling an item and then putting the money towards something new, although suggest to them to think before they spend. It’s easy for kids to want to spend money, because they have some! lol
    Once your finished clearing your room and all the items for donation/ free/ for sale have gone, it’ll be easier to keep the space clear. Following the rule of one item in, one item out, is often something that I do. Regularly going through your kids books, toys etc, also can keep your home clear of clutter, as it’s often the kids stuff that takes up the most room.
    Not only having tidy/uncluttered rooms looks good, it also frees up some of your time, that is normally taking up by having to clean around the clutter and you will feels less anxious too. K x

    • @MyLifeUnderRenovation
      @MyLifeUnderRenovation  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you so much for all of your kind words and pointers! The part that resonated with me most is the fact that less stuff will require less time to clean/manage all the stuff. A huge weight is lifted each time I clear a space, regardless of the size of the space, so I can’t imagine the weight that will be lifted if I can ever get my whole house in shape! Dreams of that feeling help keep me motivated!

    I had a spare bedroom that became a dumping ground for EVERYTHING. I finally cleaned it out, took me 3 full days but felt so good once I was done. I found things I completely forgot we had so I ended up getting rid of about 90% of it. Now it's a true spare bedroom for company 😊.

    Set up boxes for donations, trash, keep. Do the trash first & get it out of there. Ask yourself it you have used the item in the last 6 months if not donate , would you be able to replace in 20 minutes for under 20 dollars, if so donate. Higher ticket items sell or hold a yard sale. When the donation boxes are full put them directly into car. Sort remaining items make permanent homes for them in your house. Don’t buy any containers until the declutter is finished.

And still do but picked out only what I knew I would use quickly the rest I gave away. You did such a great job. I look forward to following the process.
    Some of the things that help me in decluttering are: If I have not needed or used it in a long time, then I declutter it. The chances for me ctually remembering I have it and where it is is slim. (Use it or loose it.)
    And a lot of extra stuff is so stressful. In most cases, I use something else if I have decluttered something and think I need it.
    I think about how many I want to keep of things we have several of. How many beddings do I actually need?
    Do I have to keep this (gift, memory, etc) because I love this person? Is my love for the child less if I trow away most artworks? (For me, it is a no.)
    If it is financial guilt, I can't get my money back even if I keep it. So let it go.
    For selling stuff, I set a time frame. If it is not sold after 1 week, it is donated.
    I have decluttered about 75% of our stuff and love it!
    It is getting easier for each time. Remember your goals. Your why. And celebrate the victories. (So much floor space!🎉)

    I find "Boundry storage", to be a big help. No more items than the storage allocated can hold. For example, I have an armoire (for TV and DVDs, with cabinet doors to hide the TV. All (non-Christmas holiday items, birthday paper plates/napkins, and other party supplies, i.e. wrapping paper and cards. Also, any toys, future and clothes I bought on sale for my 3 year old nephew and other children in may life to have, play with are stored in there. If it is too full then I have to purge something. I also keep birthday presents for my friend and family in there as I like to buy and item, i think they might like when I find it or if it is on sale.
    It also has two drawers as well. It is about 90% full. I call it my party/play cabinet. Christmas is plastic tubs in the basement about five. Best wishes, See CAS the Clutterbug channel, take her quiz and see how storage solutions might work for you. I am a Cricket. Best wishes.

    Listing for sale needs to be worth all the effort involved. Is it worth it? Often it’s not. Only you know if the hassle is worth the effort. I tried it for years, trying to get a small amount of money for expensive items. Now I’m so sick of all that aggravation of dealing with people that it all gets donated. It’s a process, took me years to get to this point.

    • @MyLifeUnderRenovation
      @MyLifeUnderRenovation  8 месяцев назад +1

      I’m getting more and more that way but it is a balance for sure. It’s been fun to sell things to fund the next project, almost like a challenge to my budget minded self! But often times it’s not worth it when you factor in all the time and energy invested. I also truly enjoy gifting items on my local Buy Nothing Project fb group too, so that’s been a wonderful option!

    Oh I love your cleaning videos my name is Amber. I am Joe's wife? Do you have any advice on cleaning a kid's bedroom with a bunk bed?
    I told. The kids to clean their room. I think they shoved everything under their bed We are moving the end of next month. Do you have any advice on packing up a kids' bedroom? The kids are 5 and 6.

    • @MyLifeUnderRenovation
      @MyLifeUnderRenovation  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks Amber! Thanks for watching! If there is enough space under the bed for storage, you could either use low profile totes to store toys in a rotation (so they are not all out all the time) or for storing clothing that is out of season possibly. Or even a dresser drawer on casters under a bed for storage works well. If you keep storage under there, then there isn’t space for them to shove things under. Will you have space at your new space after you move to have a playroom so they don’t need to have as much in their rooms?
      For packing up their bedroom, try to purge as you go rather than AFTER you move! I learned the hard way on that. 😉 You’ll feel so much better in the new space with just the items your kids/family really wants and needs. I’d declutter toys and items as you pack and maybe pack up as much as you can now and just leave out the essentials/top favorite items of the kids’. Best wishes as you prepare to move!

    I think you are doing great and I don't judge you but I will give you some advice.
    I can relate to having that initial energy and bringing all that stuff out to another room just to be overwhelmed. My advice is to keep the stuff in the room where it was. Work an hour at a time. Start with trash. Fill a bag and bring that bag out of the house.
    Then take everything you want to donate and bring that stuff to some kind of secondhand store. Goodwill or what it might be. Now, you have just moved your stuff. They are still in the house. This Idea of having people coming home to you, doesn't appeal to me. It will take time. Give it a try to sell the most valuable stuff but don't be sad if you won't be able to get what you want.
    The feeling of freedom, when all this stuff has left your house, is worth more than any money.
    The reason why the room has come to that stage is postponed desitions.
    I say it again. Postponed desitions.❤ Good luck

      Hi, you have too much stuff to go through to bother with the hassle of trying to sell things. Ultimately, it will just slow you down or worse, stop your progress altogether. Donating is great & it’s ok to just throw things away if that’s what it takes to get it out of your house. Well done for making a start. Keep going, you can do it !
