when I was 16 I had a speckled Amazon Parrot named R2D2. He loved it when I cranked up the amp and shredded any metal at all. He seemed to particularly like Slayer. Side note if you had a chicken pot pie and didn't give him a bite of chicken he would literally attack you. He was punk rock to the core
My kids loved Slayer when they were babies especially. They liked metal but for some reason Slayer really got them going. My oldest really loved the Soulfly DVD too.
It's a killer album. I remember when it came out. Same time Painkiller and Rust in Peace came out. All three albums released within one month. Good year for metal.
Its weird how Slayer tone is almost the complete opposite of Metallica - no mids vs all the mids. After listening closely I was surprised how “clean” the Slayer tone is. Obviously they play with gain but not as much as you’d think. Enough for a thick aggressive sound but its clean enough to be articulate.
Take note Marshall 800 in my experience made me also play better, it's a good clean amp , even with gain ,and it really exposes all your sloppy bad habits ...so it makes you play "cleaner"...I never noticed this until then ... always played with boxes "dirty" ...I used just the head .I hope this helps everyone... it's like punk clean with natural distortion
The reason why Seasons is in my opinion the best album Slayer’s ever done, is that they took what was great about their 4 previous albums and put it all together in Seasons, they took the solos from Show no Mercy, the evilness of Hell Awaits, and they combined the speed of Reign in Blood with the slow tempo and heavy atmosphere of South of Heaven and put it all in this album. By the way this tone has been a lot of fun to play with on my DSL40 Combo, can’t go wrong with Marshall amps.
I have a 1998 dsl50 and it is absolutely brilliant. It does have the bias issue which I need to get sorted, but tone wise it’s just everything I like in an amp... mainly that it’s a Marshall and a good one at that
@@scmtbnomad Nice. I have a 2x12. I bought a Bantamp Jackman 20 watt mini head, but that's probably not as loud as the 20 watt DSL. I haven't even tested it out yet.
Man, I'm so glad I found your channel! You're like the most easy going, laid back cat, but you KILL on the guitar! You seem to cover all my favorite bands and I really get a lot out of you showing how you set everything up. Just awesome. Keep up the great work. Cheers from America!
It’s funny how RUclips changes peoples opinions on certain stuff. The DSLs seem to be getting a really good rep at the moment since you and Ola have gotten great tones from them
Max Medlow I’ve had a DSL20HR since they first debuted. I bought it because it was cheap and needed something to power up my two vintage Marshall 4x12’s. Like all DSL’s I’ve always found the DSL20 easy to dial in great classic Marshall tones. Recently I brought it to a rehearsal for a new classic rock band I’m in because I failed to get my pedalboard up and running in time. I went old school off the guitar (Strat) and it was liberating.
The gain on my DSL20 head is horrible. It is far, far to fizzy. After watching a metric shit tonne of videos, I have found that most of the RUclips videos use a mic, which removes a fair bit of fizz.
Note: HOLY moly, i turned down the volumes on all my Slayer presets in Bias fx and now they finally sound right! They are no longer muddy, boxy, wooly . It's actually much tighter and crunchier. I then turned up the master vol on the plugin to compensate. I had no idea , THANKS!
Hey thanks for another great video with the DSL20. I picked one up last month and I’ve really been digging your videos because I play the exact same music. Love the King V btw! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
You absolutely nailed it mate. Thumbs up from another Slayer fan in WA. I'm super impressed by this amp, I've got the Marshall SC20H and SV20H, they're kickass little amps too.
I love all your clips man good job we have the same tastes we know whats heavy seasons also my fav slayer album justice for all my favorite album of all time your favorite parts are often often mine also i think you are a little older than me but i guess we grew up with the same music context keep up your good work dude
I have the DSL40 Combo and I’ve been highly addicted to it lately, and plugging those settings in has been awesome for me. Just wish I could solo better.
Went from a late 90's TSL to Blackstar Series One, then Peavey Ultra (later blew up XD), finally landed on a modern DSL100 and I've never been happier!!! These amps just get it right. Not for everyone but right for me.
Great job bye the way. This amp is a monster. Ola should have a look at this channel so he can realize you can get more than one tone out of every amp.
@Bogey Check my Fk'n-Slayer playlist as my token of apology... it's FREE! Covers, live TV performances and a rare studio version of Season's with FLUTE?!
wow that is close!!! love it!! i always thought that if they bumped up the gain just a tiny bit on this album it might give it slightly more bite than it already does
Man you nailed that tone. Really loving all of these tone capture vids. Would personally love to see you do one for Crowbar's 1993 self-titled album. Such a unique tone on that one. \m/
I've bought this amp 2 years ago because of this video. To imitate BOSS RGE-10, I've tried Boss GE-7 Eq first before the amp, It sterilizes some unwanted frequencies but sounded more like Exodus. But when I tried on fx loop with ''sad face'' while 100 and 200k are on flat and 3,2 and 6,4ks are a little below the flat. It became pure Seasons In the Abyss.
I got a DSL100H and one of the rig rundowns has Gary playing them, copied the settings and rocking out. Doesn't sound like the album exactly, but the sound from his side of the tour is there.
Owning this same amp in the head version also...I am in love with it....sold my Friedman Runt 20 head yesterday because it can not do what this DSL20HR can do...did an A/B Pepsi Challenge between the two heads...had the Runt 20 max gain with boost on and 6 band Eq in the loop for more shaping to try and get close to the DSL20HR tone....when I went to DSL 20 head and dialed it to sound like the Runt...the gain was on 2......sold the Runt 20
Nailed it! I tried to order the 20 last year and they were sold out for months. Ended up going with the Dsl40cr. These new dsl’s are so good for the money.
This is perfect, sounds nice and gritty and raw just like that Seasons album! I like how you explained the use of the Volume and how it effects punch. More isn't always better! Btw, anyway you can talk about how to make Slayer's Divine Intervention sound? There's no tutorials on that on RUclips and no tones in Positive Grid at all lol, surprising. Thanks, just an idea but you don't have to!
Thanks man, to be honest I didn’t like the drip tuning 90’s direction slayer went. I thought they regressed on that album trying to fit in with new metal. Sorry dude, I hold the earlier stuff as absolute masterpieces and loved coming back with Christ Illusion.
@@LambChopper678 Oh, I think you confused Divine Intervention with Diabolica in Musica. The latter was the Nu Metal drop tuning. The former was fast and still in Eb. I also read that Kerry said the Divine album was over processed w /12 studio engineers , so I think its a sound you can't really get anyways. Anyways, love all the material! I was able to get much better sound out of my Bias Fx by simply copying you (Turning knobs down like Volume and gain). The speaker mic positions sound nothing like yours , however. Cheers buddy!
Such a kick ass album dude, fucking LOVE the riffs, and the tones. That King V Jackson kicks ass, I got a 7 string rhoads I gotta put seymour duncans in, since thye got jackson branded pickups. Soon enough read to start shredding 🤘

Three of my favorite albums of all time dude, definitely. I feel like Painkiller sometimes gets forgotten, and I can’t figure out why!
Seasons in the abyss was the first song I learned. It took forever.
But once I did, I completely learned tab and notation lol
This album came out on my birthday 13 years before I was born.
And you couldn't have missed Cowboys from Hell? which was also released that same year...

Less gain makes the tremolo picking sound better.
They actually have similar live tones. Boosted mids and bass, and lowered treble.
Nailed it, I haven't seen Slayer this tight since Tom Araya's hotpants at Donnington '92
Hehe nice

Love this little series of videos you're doing on this DSL20. Im thinking of getting one for band practices
I've got a dsl40cr and can't speak highly enough about it. If you want the extra headroom the DSL20 will do well, but the 40 is plenty loud.
I wonder if it's loud enough to be heard over a double bass metal drummer without mic'ing it through a PA.

There is legit NO OTHER channel in youtube as good as this to replicate guitar tones...amazing work as always, and gratz on 100K, incredibly deserved!
The powers of that parrot are undeniably great...
Notice the only thing in common from all these great tones is the parrot. Just saying... lol
When I saw Slayer live in '91, I thought they had one of the best guitar tones I've ever heard live!
And there was two! 🎸👍🏻
Man something about Slayer...all their riffs are just pure fucking evil and I love it
A huge part, playing in E flat instead of E 🤘
Evil sounding guitar harmonies and no melody mate that's what it is that and their fabled devil or demon scale that kerry harps on about
