Mini's win to my ears for clean.
Close enough for rock & roll!
Ha, thanks for doing this. I was a little skeptical about these mini-humbuckers, but now, I'm heading into the store tomorrow....they still have one of these left.
THANKS :)
Did you ever get that SG, and how did you like it?
Nice video. I’m planning on getting the 2020 Tribute. This pretty much solidified my decision, I like the sound of your Tribute. A well done side by side comparison.
Nice you did this clean. It’s what counts.
I dig the twang factor of the mini. Lots of personality
I have a standard with 57's. Thinking about adding a special with the minis. Thanks for your post
I own the Special and love it. Actually kept it and sold my LP for a Taylor 514ce
clean tone thank you great demo
Nice vid, useful info 😎👍
I love the 19' SG Tribute especially for metal with a few minor upgrades the thing hits like a sledgehammer to the chest, put it on a marshall and it's game over!
The SG shot out!!!!! 👍
Nice you did it clean. That’s what counts.
Thanks for the demo. I did prefer the tribute's tone. Sounded full but had clarity and articulation.
I have the exact same special. It is fantastic. Mine looks like it has ebony fretboard but the specs say rosewood, I have heard that some were ebony?
It's stunning, and it sounds every bit as good as it looks. (The minihumbucker one, tbc) And now I really regret not buying that exact model when my local had it. I had it in my hands, but went for a 7hr round trip for a Les Paul tribute instead. Which is great. But I've since learned to value SG's, and minihumbuckers alike. Together? On a Tribute, brown with block inlays, tear drop small guard and 24 frets...(it covers that weird gap). Just just perfect guitar! The tone, you say chimey, I say it's glassy. Like, there is absolutely no ice picks! I Vaaant one! Haha.
I like Mini's in a SG - they should come out with the Name ... ''SG Deluxe'' ..or add a Deluxe truss rod cover is what I do, i have an SG pro that came with p90's i think but didn't know at the time as i bought it with a broke truss rod and no electronics and was modified and routed for the bigger top Mount 2 vol 2 tone control... but really they sound their best in a Les Paul esp in hollow bodies, they are Magical ...very articulate sound u can't find in a Humbucker, but a vintage T-top... my fav 2 pickup's
From the vid, it sounded like those mini-pups were pretty quiet, like regular humbuckers.
They're way quieter than single coils, not quite as quiet as regular humbuckers. I like that they have more clarity and bite than typical humbuckers.
Cooool locooo :D
Great video. I am really starting to like the tribute with humbuckers. I think it has a more mellow sound than the standard. Mini humbuckers have always sounded great. Oh yes your playing is great.
Thanks for the compliment. Definitely jazzier tone options with the tribute. I ended up selling that one and getting an '89 SG standard and adding a Deusenberg trem, which balances the weight and sounds great
@Kyle AND I will have to look and hopefully there is a video on that one. Do you like the sounds of the new standard better?
@@garypannone7755 to me, high quality humbuckers need to have *smooth* clarity to them. I haven't played nearly as many older SGS as I have newer ones, but my personal SG has smooth clarity, but I find newer models struggle to find clarity that isn't harsh. My only complaint about mine is that the bridge pickup gets a little microphonic, so it is prone to feedback in loud settings
Mini Humbuckers will fit into the routing of P90s if anyone wants to mod a P90 equipped SG. I like both full humbuckers and P90s (I have an SG Standard 61 with full Humbuckers, and an SG Special with P90s. If I see a cheap second hand P90 SG, I may acquire it to fit mini humbuckers. I am left-handed so choice of second hand guitars not too great.
I have the special and have been kicking around the idea of swapping the neck pick up that has a dent in the cover for a p90. Best of both worlds.
Sweet playing. Do you still have the guitars?
Not anymore. For the mini humbucker sound, I now have an Epiphone Crestwood, and I have an '89 Orville by Gibson SG for the classic SG sound.
Humbucker vs mini:
- neck - 0:46 vs 1:00
- both - 1:34 vs 1:18
- bridge - 1:51 vs 2:16
Minis for me😉
Does the mini humbucker has a hum like a P90?? tnx!
I have the SG special and definitely NO him whatsoever. It's a humbucker just smaller, but adds more clarity and I believe bass.
The SGs have both rosewood fretboard.
my 2018 special looks like ebony, specs say rosewood...
hi the SG Special has an Ebony fret board ? Nice video thanks for sharing with us all, Peace !
I sold it a while back, but I'm pretty sure it did.
Thanks ! @@realkylehooks
on my 2018 special when I have the volume at 10 on a clean tone with gain at 1 it tends to get fuzzy when strumming chords anyone know why
It could be a few different things. If the pickups are high output and the amp has a weird gain structure, it could still get fuzzy. Or it may just be too much bass. Try rolling out the bass and see if it still gets muddy
In this vid the mini humbucker bridge pickup, strange enough, sounds duller then the humbucker.
the 2018 SG Special has a rosewood fretboard not ebony
I think you're right. Oops
mine sure looks like ebony
..... if Carlos is missing.... you go for the double
Near to absolutely no difference.
In the room with them or listening with headphones, I think the difference is substantial
