Enjoyed that, what a lovely spate river. You should find time for tying a few flies over the winter, can't beat catching a salmon on your own fly. Try a Red Allys Shrimp, a great fly for backend salmon.
Fantastic! Well done on your fish!! Lovely stretch of water! In terms of tying your on flies, that's a tricky one! It's a great hobby in it's own right, and no better joy catching one on your own fly! BUT, if your worried about going down another rabbit hole with it, then DON'T DO IT!!! You'll will end up with a fly tying materials addiction and not enough life expectancy left to use it all!!! The other poster about sticking to one or two materials/patterns is a MYTH!! lol
Thanks David. I think you make a very valid point! I can easily see how a person could get sucked into fly tying. I think I will maybe try and do a few (just a few!) and see where it goes.
My family are from North Shields, And during WW2 my Grandad evacuated the family up to Kirkhaugh to avoid the regular bombing of North Shields, My dad and his brothers spent the wartime years foraging the rivers and land around where you are, Hares, Rabbits, Trout, Salmon and birds eggs. They had pet Jackdaws living in the house. .......Lovely part of the world. And I think you have convinced me to have a day or two there next season. Tight lines !
That way of life is so far removed from modern day living that I think we (as a nation) couldn't survive an exprience like the second world war anymore. We just don't have the skills required to survive. Glad that I may have lured you back to visit the area. We are spoiled for great fishing here and I'm only just discovering it for myself.
Only one week into the close season and you're wetting my appetite for next year! Looked a great stretch of water at a good height. Gorgeous scenery. Lovely fish. Life is good!
@@brianpeutherer2666 The Oracle is the perfect rod for the Coquet but probably too small for the Tyne. I have the matching Shakespeare switch line on mine and I absolutely love it. I have met many happy Fed anglers who swear by them. Opens up a lot more of the river than using a single hander.
Well, it took a while, but I bit the bullet and had a day on the ST at Alston last Friday. What an absolutely awesome river. It was my dream river - or it would have been if I'd touched a fish! So frustrating to see half a dozen, but not interest them. That said, it's called fishing, not catching, and I had a brilliant day out. I was knackered by the time I got home.
Loving your videos and what you are doing. That's what I was up to (on the Lune mainly) years ago but not filming. If you have read Falkus remember that the net is a trap and if you hold it under the water to reduce spooking the fish, but hey, I know its easier said than done!
Many thanks, I have heard that the Lune used to be a cracking river though I fear the glory days are long gone now. I will try to keep the net underwater but like you say in the heat of the moment...
@abakerslife Yeah, there was still a lot if water flogging required especially for the salmon. I'm not sure what it's like now as I've not really done any, apart from one night for Sea Trout. I didn't catch any, but there were fish about.
Another great video, cheers. What a perfect day out - cock salmon , great wild trails and the colours were amazing between the forest trails and the river!! 👍👍 really enjoying the content 🙌
great video! i love these rough spate rivers, im an hour or so from the cumbrian streams, only managed 1 salmon for you tube so far though! good luck, great channel, subbed 👍👍
And you need to invest in a good salmon net. Just a bit of advise, Take your time in getting your fish in, It will tire itself out and then you can lead it in when it is on it's side. Good luck.
@@TaylorMadeFlyFish It really is, I hope to get to know the south Tyne better this year. Hopefully it will actually rain this year so I get the chance.
You're doing a good job, but so much hand lining! In my opinion cast a bit squarer and mend your line, it'll work better on that fast water. Don't be constantly retrieving. Good luck and tight lines!
Another great vid - I'm a youtuber too, and you have the winning formula! I'm planning a last minute booking trip up the South Tyne when the rain and river level are right later this month. Do you have any links to more detailed beat maps/parking? The map on line is not very good and a bit vague? Sorry, no way to PM you!
Cheers James I don't have any links I'm afraid. I struggle with that map too. Kirkhaugh I think is where you need to be parking and then walk back upstream towards Alston. If I was you I'd contact the association secretary for the real low down as I've only ever been up there 2 or 3 times myself. I am hoping to get a day up there before the end of the season though so you never know we might cross paths.
This is a great video. Is the footbridge just after the Alston garage on the way out of Alston ? Did you then head downstream ? How did you fish the other bank please ? Much appreciated and well done again keep the vids coming
No you need to drive further than the garage, past the south Tyne railway then there is a track that takes you to the bridge at Kirkhaugh. I'm not sure you can fish the other bank but I'm no expert having only been up there twice. Before I fished I rang the chairman of the Alston Angling Association who was very helpful.
@@abakerslife - thank you all the best - I had a sea trout at Dilston last week - need your expertise as to how to catch a salmon - I had 4 sea trout last year too - all the best
Hi, just found your channel a few weeks ago and I'm loving all the videos 🙂What is the switch rod setup you are using? #7? what line as it seems effortless to cast! 🎣🎣 Thanks
That's a lovely looking spate river. Enjoyed the video. You should try to find time to start tying a few flies over winter, it does add another dimension to the sport. Try the Red Allys shrimp, it's a great fly particularly in the autumn.
I've seen a few of his videos and he is very good but I am leaving the fly tying alone for now. I will take it up later in life when I have more time maybe.
Yeah so about 10 minutes into the video I explain that after bumping into a local angler I was made aware of that fact and the dog went into the van. Genuine mistake and I make it clear in the video that dogs are not allowed. I booked my ticket through fishpal and always read the fishing conditions which does not state that dogs are not allowed.
So , why are no dogs allowed when Farmer said there is no stock in the fields ? Has there been history of problems ? The dog wasn’t fishing without a day ticket ?
A truly great video Rob and so very useful for anyone looking to fish that beat, conations and well done!
Glad you enjoyed it

Good luck, need some rain first though.

It was a Barrio switch line rated one weight lower than the rod
What the rod you was fishing ?
Shakespeare Oracle switch 11' 7\8wt
