The underwater menace is made better due to the animation which helps elevate the serial

The Faceless Ones probably had the best animation of all the animated ones we’ve gotten so far.

Great review, while I'm not in a rush to pick up this new release, it's nice to finally see this story get a Proper DVD release so fans can actually take the time to appreciate and review the story properly. Will you be doing an updated big finish collection video next year? Just wanted to ask. Love your channel and I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy new year!

I will be doing collection videos, not just Big Finish down the line. Most likely after I relocate. Thanks.

    Great review!
    Fun fact;
In this story there's a minor character that only appears in a couple episodes called Lolem. They were played by Peter Stephens, whom had previously acted as Shithead-Cyril from "The Celestial Toymaker".
Interesting timeline of animations by coincidence then.

Hope they do a Marco Polo animation this year

As long as it isn’t rushed, everyone will be happy. As they did cut corners with The Underwater Menace.
Marco Polo deserves the best treatment and nothing less.

My biggest issue with this animation is that the recreations of Episodes 2 & 3 are just not great. I noticed quite a few animation errors. Like Jamie and Ben's voices being swapped in one scene in Episode 3's aniamtion.
I feel the animation here does the surviving episodes a disservice, especially since recreations of surviving episodes have been very good in the past. Like the remakes of Episodes 1 & 3 of The Faceless Ones is stellar! And I think the remake of the surviving Episode 2 of The Evil of the Daleks is spectacular!

There's another error in Episode 2 - they animated Ramo saying the second half of one of the Doctor's lines in the temple ("but that isn't true"). The never-ending walk-cycle in the episode 2 cliffhanger is also pretty hard to watch.
This felt more like it was done by the Big Finish Creative team than the BBC Studios team, they do so much to "improve" the serial with expanded sets and weird character designs (Damon is completely unrecognizable!). Just like Galaxy 4 (even Abominable Snowmen Ep.2 to an extent), you can watch the Recons+Surviving Episodes or you can watch the Full Animation, but they aren't meant to be seen together. And that really sucks, imo.

@@OmniscientCameo I think it’s mostly because I’ve seen Episodes 2 & 3 so many times that I know how it’s meant to look. It just felt like so much was lost with the animated versions of the surviving episodes.
If it was a story that had very little existing material, like Abominable Snowmen or Galaxy 4, it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. I rarely watch the surviving episodes with the animated ones on those. But then you have this story where I think the original story was completely ignored and the animation errors completely took me out of it.

Love your videos, but disappointed that you are not on camera nowadays

My opinion on the Underwater Menace changes almost every time I watch it. And I think I know why:
Going into it expecting a bad story: found it to be almost a low-key B-movie classic
Going into it expecting it to be the B-movie classic from last time: no it's crap.
Basically, whatever I expect to experience when I start it, my opinion ends up being the opposite. If you expect it to suck, it doesn't seem bad. If you expect it to be good, it seems to be bad. lol

If fans WILL pester and harass a big corporation into doing something (in this case putting out The Underwater Menace pt2 on home video) then the corporation will most likely do it badly out of spite. (Some would suggest Doctor Who Seasons 23-26 in the late 80s and even Star Trek Classic Series Season 3 in 1968 as examples.)
