Devotion takes place in a particular time in Taiwan when "religious leaders" scammed desperate people, often out of more than just money. Speaking of settings in a particular time, the same devs first came out with Detention. Takes place during the White Scare, when Taiwan was under occupation of communist China. It deals with the protagonist struggling to cope with her petty reporting to "law enforcement" causing so much more damage than she ever realized. There's a film adaptation that's faithful enough you can watch that if you don't want to play the game.
…I feel like James from SH2 was a person who was just in a lot of pain.. he cared about Mary .. but deep down he had to admit that he wanted to be free of the situation.. he probably had a moment where everything built up and he finally snapped.. and then he blocked it out .. but he never would’ve went to Silent Hill if he didn’t care about Mary .. SH2 is a depressing game.. lol 😂 but it’s a masterpiece
I share the same view; I don't think James is actually a bad guy. He's been through too much, and obviously if he didn't care about his wife, he wouldn't be miserable.
I agree, even though James is totally guilty and is scaping this guilt. He blocked what he have done because it's too much for his sanity, but deep down he believes he must be punished for what he's done. He originally went to the town to kill himself. And ends up pushing forward life threating nightmares to once and for all deal with the truth itself. It's like a reverse Dante story maybe?.. IDK, the grey morality area that Silent Hill sets you is amazingly complex. And don't forget Angela's story, dark af, and Eddies too. They are all killers just like James, but with different perception of guilt or lack off and if they should be punished or not. Best psychological horror game ever. Period
Totally agree with you. This is why for me James Sunderland is by far the best videi game character ever made. He was not a good guy nor a bad guy and was just the typical man who is very sad. Lot's of game companies tried to copy James Sunderland but James is James. He was not a superhero at all. All the things he wanted was to be free from the sin he never really want to do in the first place. People unleash their inner demons when being depresssed and that's why James is the best example of a lonely man. I always believe that he never meant to kill Mary but rather he just want to end his life instead of seeing Mary suffer. But the continous fight and mouthing from Mary made him to decide to kill her instead. His mental health was already declining and that's the time his fuse exploded. So I really hate people who says James is pure evil. He loves Mary and will do anything for her. And Angela and Eddie really makes the game more bizarre. We all know how their stories are so dark and I really hope the SH2 Remake will give them justice and will tone it down.
@@Eyes-Scream0213 I agree with you too, a person with so much remorse and self hatred can't be a pure evil person. It doesn't make him get rid of the fact that he is a killer of course. I love James, and what do you think about what little bloober has shown of James so far? To me it seems they must correct certain things because it's not quite the attitude I would expect of his persona.
it was definitely unplanned, a crime of passion. at least that’s the most interesting interpretation. she was mean to him cus of her tumor. he was afraid of her dying and losing her. he was grieving the old mary. the one taken by the disease. but he chose the selfish way out no doubt. for a moment he let that take over. he couldnt take her meanness anymore, he also couldnt stand seeing her lose herself, and he killed her. he did a terrible thing that was his fault, but i don’t think he was just a bad guy. he convinced himself it was a mercy kill bc he couldn’t fathom the mistake he made. but he was lying to himself, deep down he knew it wasn’t out of mercy. he felt guilty to the point of being suicidal.
Devotion is such a good game. I was so upset when it was removed from Steam because I hadn't been able to purchase at the time. Thankfully the devs now have it available on a website that they made and I was able to get it there. A few other horror games that I've played came to mind while watching this video. "Among the Sleep," which has an atypical style for horror, but definitely had it's moments, but the story was sad, once you realize what's really going on. "Through the Woods" was another atypical style of horror as the monsters are those from Norse mythology (i.e. trolls and such). The story starts out kinda sad, about a single mom who is looking for her son who has gone missing in the nearby woods...but the end surprised me and made me tear up. "Never Again" is the third one I thought of. It's a story about a young girl with asthma during one of the worst times in human history and the end is really sad.
RUclips is so freaking saturated with content creators, is what I believe. This was very educational and entertaining. I just subscribed. I enjoy finding gem channels.
Oooh I immediately recognized Town of Light!! I only have a PS5 so I can't play most of the games you show but I really loved that one and another one they made called Martha is Dead. They both felt like really nostalgic real games the first playthrough
Amazing video, this is the first time I actually get sad while watching something about video games because you really present it in a convincing way. Personally, I think James had mental issues even before Mary's illness, but obviously Mary getting sick was the straw that broke the camel's back and he didn't know what to do. This vide made me excited for the remake to discover the story even deeper.
In Silent Hill 2, Mary's illness had begun to make her no longer herself. I still do not believe it was because he was angry over her being mean to him. James loved her, but toward the end, Mary wasn't Mary, as a person who just recently found out my Uncle and Aunt have cancer and listened to how my Aunt treated my Dad after having a tumor removed from her head that grew down between her brain and ocular socket. Yes, she was very mean, short-tempered, and nearly a different person, she had zero filters. But my Dad and Uncle learned to live with it. It is not James killing Mary because he was mad, it brings to light when is it okay to die on our terms, a question on euthanasia. Mary doesn't fight but appears to tell him something. I believe in how he feels after wars she was his one beloved, and there is an ending where James drives into the water. It's been explained by the original team that was their cannon ending
Devotion is a focking masterpiece. Play this. It is more scary then every body horror, monsters etc. It is an unspoken secret that children get trapped by their parents to make them educate all day to become a famous star or very good at their job. The tevelopers of this game went underground cause they were searched by government. It is such an creativeand brave work without any competition.
I would add three indie horror games; Insomnis, The Glass Staircase, and Home Sick. I don't want to spoil the games, so giving as little info as I can. Insomnis: You return to your grandfather's house to find out what happened to him and the four children he took in; first person, search house, solve puzzles, get items, mild jumpscares type game. The Glass Staircase: Girls at a finishing school begin disappearing each day;. Resident Evil, Lovecraftian type game. Home Sick: Exploring the interior of your apartment complex to try to piece together what happened, and why strange things are happening;. Exploration type game, recommend turning around to look at the building after you escape to understand things more fully, including the name of the game.
Cat lady is a really sad and interesiting game. It`s not really a horror game, it´s a click & point game, extremly story focused. A lady lives alone, only with cats , until she made a hard decision. This game have a hard topic, around life and death, people around you, its not for everyone, but soooo good!!
click & point games tend to be the most interesting ones sometimes, Detention is a big example. And I definitely agree about the Cat Lady, it's known for having a very deep story that can also be disturbing.
Edith Fitch is very sad. When you deal with family death curses and are shown each death in a narrative way. It can be a downer , especially the baby. Yeah , it is a walking simulator, but the fact that you are not running from anything makes the family stories much more sad. Also the suicide of Rachael Foster and the vanishing of Ethan carter . All the same kind of game. And devotion. The rule of rose and the cat lady also. When you look at all those mega churches that just want your money and how people fall for this , the you realize devotion can happen in real life.
I swear I feel like you read my mind lol Edith Fitch was literally supposed to be 5th game in this video and I was planning to put it at number 2, that's why in the intro I said "5 horror games" instead of 4. But during making the video I realized that it's getting too long, so I decided to save certain games for another one.
As developers mentioned in some interview, "Silent Hill 2" is inspired by the movie "Jacob's Ladder". And in my opinion both "Jacob's Ladder" and "Silent Hill 2" is influenced by Christianity and Buddhism. It's all about the idea of purification before one's death. Therefore everything we saw/experienced in the game is the reflection of one's remorse. So if there's a proper interpretation of the story, it would be like this: Only God knows James was a "good" or "bad" person but at least we can understand he had a strong remorse for the death of his wife...so he had to suffer for it before he crossed over to the "other side". And we (players) can feel it together along the journey (gameplay) with the character. I really don't believe in God things but for some reason I can understand these philosophy. The bible says "You can leave judgment and punishment in His hands" but we can not help judging the others, right? Hence we also have to face ourselves in that way, even before we die. After all it's not about the death and after life. It's the journey of our life. I guess that's the reason why "Jacob's Ladder" variants touch us so deeply. By the way, do you know what's the worst part of the story? They made "Jacob's Ladder" remake completely lack of such philosophical depth...thank you so much Hollywood people :-(
I don't think James is necessarily a bad guy or good guy, he's simply a man placed in a traumatic situation that pushed him over the edge. I think he killed Mary not from wanting to end her suffering or wanting to end his own suffering, but both simultaneously, he just wanted it all to be over. Part of the beauty of the game is for people to decide how they view the situation but the fact is the only who knows why is James. I think another facet of sh2 that I don't hear people mention is that anyone is capable of doing something they normally wouldn't do if put into an extreme situation.
James is our vehicle, our protagonist in the story. It's a beautiful story that is created because someone once had that very thought and didn't act on it. I don't think he was a selfish husband. I think they had a dream marriage, and having it end because of a horrible and painful disease that will tear you apart. There is sympathy in James, a deep connection we can get on a primal level. It's a beautiful story, well crafted, and an all time favorite.
Having provided end of life care for my grandmother, caring for my fiancé through all her medical problems, I get James. It takes a lot out of you. It can drive you out of your mind and being a caregiver can wear you down body and spirit. It's a lot and it's always complicated. Did he do the right thing? No. But I can understand his reasoning.
I think it was both .. Neither of them wanted her to suffer. She was angry, but she loved him. He wanted to be rid of her, but didn't want to actually kill her. She told him that was what she wanted.... My mother died of cancer, so I understand her feelings..
James killing Marry is not just because he didn't want to take care of her. It actually depends on the ending you get. Personally i don't think it's completely black and white ; he killed her because he was selfish,he killed her because he couldn't watch her suffer more. It's a combination of both imo.
Could you make a list of horror games where aren't monsters which hunt you? Ok jump scares but when something hunt me and I dont have a weapon I hate to play those games 😳😁

The first thing I thought of was the prologue of The Last of Us... And the ending... It was selfish of Joel to condemn the whole world to the Cordyceps because he got attached
i do think james is selfish only because he could’ve just left his wife. i get it’s hard after building a life and being in love for so long to but i would think it’s harder to m*rder a loved one. he could’ve still been by her side without having the obligation to do everything for her and deal with her severe mood swings and put yourself through depression and become an alcoholic. they both deserved better imo and neither should’ve had to have gone through that. sh2 rules for the storyline
I can't get Devotion to play on my PC, Laptop or Steam Deck without a graphics glitch in certain segments. I can't afford a gaming PC just to play it. Sucks because I want to play this game.
What's your GPU and CPU? As far as I know, the game doesn't take much to run smoothly. If the problem is just about glitches and not general, then it's probably not about the power of you PC, it can because of something in your windows or your GPU drivers are outdated.
@@KazzaGamesTV I don't have a gaming PC. A simple Lenovo with an AMD Ryzen 5 5500U with a Radeon Graphics 2.10 GHz. It plays most of my games just fine. In Devotion no matter what device I use, I get a lighting bug when I enter the alley early on and look at the floating object. Just a bright light they takes up the screen if I look directly at it. I actually reached out to Red Candle who were nice enough to reply. They said To play Devotion, the minimum requirement for graphics is NVIDIA GeForce 660 / AMD R9 270. I decided to keep the game until I eventually get a PC that can play it properly.
This is really strange; if the glitches occur on all of your devices, then the device might not be the problem. From where did you get the game? It's not available in any online store except the developers' own website.
@@KazzaGamesTV I bought Devotion straight from the Red Candle website which is why I reached out to them for help. I use my Steam Deck as my gaming PC and was able to play Devotion on it but the lighting bug still happened in the same place. Red Candle replied that my devices simply don't meet the minimum requirements.
Have you tried to minimize the settings? Sometimes putting it on high might cause some troubles on average devices, but reducing the quality can improve the performance.
Way too overly sad tone of this video. You could have limited this. Especially during the Silent Hill part, you did a lot of repeating of you already said 1 minute earlier. This could have been trimmed much better in my mind.

Why do you say something then you play part that says the same thing
Way too overly sad tone of this video. You could have limited this. Especially during the Silent Hill part, you did a lot of repeating of you already said 1 minute earlier. This could have been trimmed much better in my mind.
