    I feel like the ultimate fear most of this is capturing on is: Home. It doesn't even need to be your own but your apartment, your flat, your home, your buddy's home, your grandma's home. They're safe spaces. When you are surprised by odd things, odd sounds, bad lights, possible strangers...that's an ultimate nightmare. Who CARES why the strange man is in my house or my grandfather's house or even what my grandfather did. HE. SHOULD. NOT. BE. THERE. and i think that is why, when we bring the horror closer and closer to home it's so terrifying even if the story or reasoning isn't explained or perfect...we all fear something in our own space that should not be there.

    Stephen King wrote about jumpscares in Danse Macabre. He spoke of approaching a door that you know something horrible is on the other side. And how the dread of observing the closed door is so much stronger than the quick shock once it’s opened. Whatever is there will cause fear and relief, because no matter what it is it’s now exposed to be dealt with. While the door is closed, it’s still an unknown, making it much scarier

    • @drygnfyre
      @drygnfyre 6 месяцев назад +63

      Yup. This itself is a very old principle, basically fear of the unknown. It's why people seek closure on things. Even if you know something horrible happened, you need to know exactly how it went down to find peace. The anticipation of something, the not knowing something, it's terrifying.
      Interestingly, it's been theorized this is a primal instinct that has helped humans survive. The idea being that fearing the unknown keeps us alert and on the move. Seems to be common in other species, too.

    What this game does so expertly well, is subvert expectations built up by other horror games to generate tension. It constantly implies you must take action to survive in this game. Like having to close the doors in FNAF to survive animatronic attacks. However, everything is out of your control, as the game is actually scripted.
    A dark room, potential danger -> You’re unable to explore the room. You can only watch and listen to the monster as they observe you.
    You’re constantly told to “RUN AWAY” -> You’re unable to actually run anywhere.
    Going under the bed implies you must hide from the monster -> The game won’t progress until you come out from hiding.
    Even when the monster was out in the open, looking around the corner, all you can do is watch it return to the dark room.
    What’s confusing, is that even though you could be killed at any point in the game, nothing ever decides to attack you. You are entirely at the mercy of something that you do not understand.

As you progress in the game, your character in the mirror looks mroe and more zombified, and after getting the eye from the doll, when you look in the mirror, you can see the zombified character lying on the ground with an axe in the face. By the way, the reason that so many Soviet-era apartment blocks look the way they do is because they were intended to be temporary housing for residents displaced by World War II while new replacement homes were built. It was only due to the escalating conflicts with the West and the rise in corruption that the funding for home construction ended up constantly diverted and put on hold, until eventually it was abandoned entirely due to the dissolution of the Union in the early 90's.
    The fact that "temporary" housing is still standing, let alone largely intact over 40 fucking years later is an insane testament to their quality of construction.

    • @DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBro
      @DannyDevitoOffical-TrustMeBro 6 месяцев назад +36

      Let’s be real here, when governments say something is temporary, it very rarely is. The early post-war housing put up in Britain, for example, is often still lived in. Those were just prefab homes. In Soviet Russia, a lot of people took the opportunity to make these “temporary” buildings into experiments in cheap, bland, and efficiently spaced living cubicles. The construction wasn’t quality (a lot are falling apart, though that is also half the fault of a lack of proper maintenance), it was just serviceable, and the speed of construction (though impressive to a European, is very common for us Americans who have to build out of different materials than y’all) was the main purpose. Not to denigrate Eastern Europeans, but those building complexes are slums to the rest of the western world, largely because that was what they were meant to be.

    It's funny. When I clicked the video, I didn't pay much attention to the thumbnail, and so, didn't recognize it. As such, when you started talking about recent horror games right at the beginning of the video, all I could think about was "huh, I think the only recent game to actually scare me was From the Darkness." Lo and behold, seconds later you name drop it, and I feel like an idiot for not actually looking at the thumbnail.
    This game scares me at a primal, intrinsic level. It makes me uncomfortable in such a deep, pervasive way, and I honestly don't understand why. It's such a shame it's not more well-known, it's genuinely one of the scariest games currently out there. This dev deserves way more credit, the way he sets the atmosphere is impeccable, and even his jumpscares are more effective than usual (and the quiet jumpscare? Ooh boy. That's the most effective type of jumpscare there is, and this is a hill I'm willing to die on. It doesn't scare you, it waits for YOU to notice it and scare yourself, and that's much more effective than jumping out and yelling "boo".)

      @@naranara1690 one of my most memorable experiences in gaming was when I was playing Fallout: New Vegas, exploring a Vault. There were plants inside, everywhere, and further down, I found some terminals explaining how there were spores turning the Vault inhabitants into plant monsters capable of perfectly blending with their environment. It is only after you read this terminal entry that the plant creatures start to move and attack you when you come across them.
      I have no words to describe the chill that ran down my spine when I realized I had been walking right past these bastards THE ENTIRE TIME ever since I set foot in that Vault. Delayed horror is, in my opinion, one of the most effective forms of horror out there. I wish more games, and media in general, would use it.

    I feel that the doll jumpscare puts you in the shoes of the protagonist better. The doll is staring right at you and would take anyone off guard when exploring an abandoned place with no sign of life.
    It would be hard to scare the player by noticing the doll on its own but the jumpscare gives you a similar fright to the uncanny atmosphere the doll would bring in real life

    • @SaltyBlueSea
      @SaltyBlueSea 7 месяцев назад +40

      Something related to the doll that I haven't heard him mention (at least YET, I'm only up to the hiding section) is that: In the jumpscare, the doll is looking right at the player. When it disappears, though, the doll has typical dead unmoving doll eyes staring blankly forward. If you slow it down when he talks about hiding, though, you can see that the doll is DEFINITELY looking at the player then. It's super subtle, but kind of a nod to the decaying sanity of the protagonist if not an outright sign of the Something Wrong in the space.

    _"When the game starts, you find yourself in an old Russian appartment building from the Soviet era."_ I bet that fact alone is already extremely terrifying. xD
    Seriously though, the appartment looks like a typical Soviet/post-Sovient Russian appartment. As a Russian myself, I find it funny how that atmosphere is so terrifying to so many non-Russians. This game is pretty much a normal day in Russia, just replace that bloody giant with a drunk dad - and you're good to go.

    General atmosphere, a few well placed jumpscares, encroaching dread, and the mental game it plays with the "Hold shift to run" midway to enforce the threat despite there never being one there. Another game I like that does this really well is Elevated Dread.

    The doll actually comes and looks down under the bed if you hide under there too long. You just see it staring at you under the bed but as soon as you come back out from under the bed, it goes back to where it was sitting on top of the bed. That was creepy. It’s like trying to tell you your not as safe hiding under the bed as you think if it is in the room with you, it’s eyes follow you in the room and will look for you if you hide out too long. There is no place of rest in that apartment.

    14:15 btw if your kitchen light is off you can see him standing in the kitchen but if you turn it off, he disappears.
    Also, earlier when you look inside the "albums" box, when you turn around you can see someone standing in the corner of your screen for a split second but then it disappears. This isnt really a confirmed information, but i saw this happen to caseoh when he played it, but he didnt really react cause he second guessed himself if anything was really there.

    Can't say I've played this yet, but I'm intrigued. I think what makes this game so special, and other games like it such as silent hill, pt, evil within etc... is the concept of "Death drive". The Freudian notion that one seeks out death in traumatic instances. I see it here as us "player" being involuntarily forced to experience it. Thus creating the dread and horror. It's steeped in morose dread, and a constant reminder that there is something in the dark. Hungry for you. Sure you can turn off the game at any point in time, but because of that "Death drive" you are pulled to push further. To see what is behind the curtain, even though we know we'll find something we don't like.
    Great video as always.

    The hiding under the bed is a great subvert of expectations
    The dev clearly know that hiding place=chase scene or roaming monster.
    But there's never any use to hide under bed except for puzzle or just to progress.

    3:21 this actually sounds like a usual sound of a house echoing the highway sound - some old soviet buildings were poorly sound isolated, and placed near active highways at the same time, even when laying on the bed at night and being awared, not dreaming yet, you can hear the cars' tires rub the threadbare shabby asphalt surface causing the old air vibrate and create that ghost'ish sound.

    I have a few parts where I debunk the theory. The first is that the 15 year old is not the killer. Remember the missing poster in 18:51? This describes a 15 year old boy that had brown hair and was wearing a white t-shirt and red shorts. Then, going to 16:20, you see a body in a room that has the same description. Also, he is missing an eye and you can collect an eye from the doll in 20:16. Second, the Grandfather isn't the killer either. The entity, let's call him Bob for now, isn't the grandfather, but some other person. In the game, Wrong Floor, [SPOILER ALERT!!!] there is a wanted poster warning about a m*Iestr/killer who was kidnapping people. It shows a photo of Bob that is in Wrong Floor and Into the Darkness. It's description says "Homeless, may hide in abandoned buildings and basements." and this game takes place in an abandoned soviet apartment building. [Your safe now] Now why would the Grandfather not be him? The reason why is because Bob is wearing black gym shorts similar to the 15 year old's. This is way ahead of the Grandfather's time because the Soviet photos look from the 1910s or 1920s. The Missing poster is from 2006, which is at least 80 years apart. I'm sure that the Grandfather was long gone before Bob. I don't think that he's alive either because he has some supernatural powers (It could also just be the ghosts of past victims). The Grandfather had little to nothing to do with the game besides cause the objective. Sorry about the rant, but what are your thoughts?

    The fear of the unknown and nothing happening yet building up the tense/spooky atmosphere is the best way to make horror. Just little tidbits to make the mind overwork itself with imagination. Claustrophobia and tiny hallways--Brief moments of respite before throwing the person back into fear is also a good way to finish it off. Unfortunately, most horror games nowadays tends to use jumpscares too much. I truly believe that nothing is scarier than the quiet jumpscares--the ones where you, yourself end up looking at it and it looks back at you. I believe that's why Visage worked well--Well, some chapters.
    The start of this one was indeed scary! I got spooked watching the video even and that's not usually a thing for me haha! I even had to look away at times and was glad I wasn't the one controlling the character
    😂

    I love the theory that in between the Shift To Run moment and the first time the TV went all red, whoever else is in that apartment with you kills the player. Because after that is when the supernatural or unexplainable stuff starts to crank up.

    The Theory that he was a killer could fit because of the moment where you can see yourself in the mirror lying on the ground with a exe inside your back. You need to be close to the mirror to see it.
    So i guess the character you play was killed very early in the game

    I like long play vast world games but this game though shorter and in one small cramped apartment, I’m still trying to work up the nerve to finish it. I got stuck round the part of having to walk back down that hall from the front door after knowing some large man is in that one room to the left at the end of the hall but can’t progress through the game until I force myself to walk back down the hall after actually seeing the dark man slowly creeping his way out to the hallway. It’s just too unnerving. Not to mention the feeling you get when you do stand next to the door, it feels really bad to stand there starring into a dark room where somebody is in there!

      does it look old as hell? Yes! But it is far from ""devastated"". Its a regular lived in russian home. Yes it could be in a better shape but like not only it was an elderly man's home (to old to care or to be able to redo the walls and what not) but also looks a bit left out (for maybe a week, a month?). The setting is quite a regular and normal situation really.
