As a woman who is learning and about to replace my brakes and rotors for the first time on a new-to-me 2012 Tundra (have done some work on a previous ‘02 Tacoma, but never brakes) I feel like I struck gold finding your video! I chuck my Tacoma brake pad pins in my electric drill and use either cleaner and scotch brite or fine sand paper to get them nice and shiny. Then lube them as well. I enjoy knowing thought that I’m not the only OC mech. I work on commercial aircraft (28 years) and tell people all the time that you want your mechs to be OC. Thanks for all your videos. I do all my own vehicle maintenance and even though I’ve done most of the things I see you do on your channel I still learn things every time. @14:44 PRO TIP: For those of us in the NorthEast that find the rotors seized to the hub flange, there's two threaded bolt holes (Faye runs her finger right past one of them). Check the new rotor for the same threaded hole to match up the proper metric bolt.
You can run an 8mm metric bolt into the threaded hole to press the rotor from the hub flange (bolt can be found under the hood holding down the airbox and other items, or just source the correct bolt from a hardware store).
Just wanted to add this tip for anyone in the NE or the salt belt because you can spend all day pounding on the rotor and still have zero luck. Also an air hammer around the areas Faye pointed out works wonders as well.

Rust is so evil, I had to get rid of my 2007 Tundra regular cab short bed 4x4, only 80k miles, because frame rot took over. Mechanically it was perfect but East Coast rust is the worst.
@@FayeHadley Also on some cars where the rotors are siezed on and there's no provision for pulling/pushing via a bolt hole, see if there is some metal surface like on the hub carrier you can use, put a bolt and nut between the back of rotor and hub carrier then use your bolt/nut as a pusher tool

That was a great video. Just did this job with rebuilding the calipers as well on my 2010 tundra. I watched at least 20 vids and found yours AFTER I was done. Which is a shame cause you’re was definitely the best. I realized I WAYYYY over lubricated everything and definitely bent the backing plate cause I head a God awful scraping as I drive smh. PLEASE make more tundra vids!!

Gearing up for spring maintenance (Fort Worthian here, that's like late February with this year being the oddball out) and this had absolutely everything I've read in the manuals for specs, not to mention it was a helluva lot more entertaining. 👍Plotting out new brakes soon and needed the refresher! If the weather holds, I'll be sliding under for the radiator and the ATF drain this weekend. Loved the brake bleed vid I watched right before this one. Way to earn a sub!

I tend to clean and lube any rubber boots, since they don't get much love and dirty boots turn into torn boots.
A soapy rag on the caliper piston boots and silicone paste keeps everybody healthy. Same for the slide pins, that grease gets lots of heat... stuck calipers is less fun than ongoing maintenance.

Im a apprentice technician mechanic for Volkswagen, im based in Aus,Melbourne. Im a 2nd year, mid 20s, and already know working with brakes. Of course in the everyday workshop we don't go to the extreme that you have - great work though. We do lubricate the sliders on some brake setups, and the rear drums I've been told to apply some copper grease behind the brake shoes/pads in the drum. Just figured you wanted to know you've making a difference, so heres my comment and share of experience. Great to see someone elses work and compare it. Absolutely love when you do videos with Danny and when we straightened your block and files down your tappers (I think thats what they were called) I was glued to the screen. engine building is what im eager to see and learn, everyday service work is a bit too casual. Anyway, in short, thanks for a great video and your service with many smiles! Just hopes everythings wokring out for you and your success.

The intriguing thumbnail brought me here. That, and what I thought was going to be front pads on my '16 Tundra. Wasn't until I pulled the wheels off at 54,xxx miles, and at the rate I'm going, I've probably got another year to go. PLUS, thanks to Faye, a little over 3 mins. into this vid, my truck should give me a "heads up" when it's actually time!! I should probably keep watching though...

Great video!! Because of you making this very detailed video, I was able to point out to the mechanic, as of why my brakes were squeaking, and his lack of professionalism. He forgot to replace both sets of springs on the caliper, for both front brakes. You saved me alot of money, and stress, by going over every detail. Thank you, and keep up the great work.

I may have to do front pads on 2001 Nissan maxima “MadMax”My son’s first car.
It use to be mine it got passed down to him after I got a pickup.
Needless to say “MadMax”fell apart not long after he got it. It’s been fun doing the repairs myself. To save him $$.
When I was younger I thought of going into automotive mechanic line of work. I ended up with CS degree. I still missed working with my hands and fixing things. And have an appreciation for auto-tech’s .
I estimate in past 12 months I have saved my son almost $1700 in labor and parts costs (using mostly aftermarket parts)
I am trying to spur an interest in him in developing skills and mechanical skills that will help him in life. This is something missing in today’s youth.
Just a thought to add, But before you pull the vehicle off the ramp after your done.....pump the brakes up till they're hard. I've watched a few colleagues in the past forget this and prang customers cars backing out the shop. Those pistons in the calipers are still a little way back from the pad and it'll take a couple pumps to get them snugged up to the pad, last thing you want is to brake and have the pedal go to the floor! keep up the good work Faye!

It just makes sense to clean and inspect other parts, since you've got it apart anyway. Most shops don't do that, which is why I do my own work.

Great information in this video. The tip about marking the torqued bolts is a great idea. I used to work on the iRobot Powered wheelchair. That wheelchair is a class 3 medical device that can actually climb and descend stairs, so strict adherence to the torque specs is critical to prevent failure and user injury. One time I did actually lose sleep because I could not remember whether or not I had torqued the main bolts that fasten the seat arms to the power base. Fortunately the customer is an engineer, gear head and has good mobility and torque wrenches, so early the next day I called him and asked him to verify that they were torqued. They were, thankfully, but putting a discreet mark on them and checking before I left would have saved me some sleep.
