The mere fact that a center from the 80-90s is teaching SG's, PF's and SF's his moves today, says it all about how nice Hakeem was. The moves he was doing as a center was moves actually for smaller players.
I'm 31 and grew up in Houston. Definitely took for granted how good Olajuwon really was. Hands down the best post footwork in NBA history. People forget that he played in the golden era of centers, and he kicked the shit outta all of 'em. In his prime, he was the best center of all time. It's crazy that he can still move like that at 50.
Just took a frame by frame look to try to figure out the differences between their moves. They had different pivot axis. And dreams' back and hip were almost on the same dimension to utilize them as a bigger shield to protect the ball and put on more impact on anything on the path (the path itself is more like going around the defender) while Melo's hip always extended out and like a skater and his path was more like trying to cut through the room close to the defender. So Melo's hip was more like a weapon for breaking through and crushing defender. His path was more like a straight line. This causes Melo's leg behind can not bend enough to provide the second time power to have another motion in the middle of the spin process. Yes, dream's move was more like a two motion spin move and Melo's only had one. There were a lot more details came into play. Dream is a true master.
Dream is more balanced and upright, and this allows him to select either pivot foot easily. Pick slim move to either side... Melo does move more linearly I agree.
Great breakdown. The way I saw it, melo os thinking ahead and going straight to the counter (second) move without truly selling the setup (first move). For instance on the face up dribble to middle then spin to baseline, Hakeem steps right foot first into lane as he dribbled, then really sticks his left foot down into defender toward hoop to sell that he’s going toward lane before pushing off that left leg for power going into his spin. Whereas melo does not stick that left foot down so hard and is already pulling his right leg back for the spin before he’s sold the drive to the middle.
It’s hard to take this all in without subtitles, but this man just basically showed us a majority of the Dream Shake package. If I was a grade school aged Center or Power Forward, I’d be telling these drills hundreds of times a day. Ultimate cheat code.
if u look at hakeem- he had relatively short legs- and low hips- therefore his centre of gravity was much much lower than a man of his size- more like a guy 6'6" than almost a 7 footer. so because he had a low centre of gravity- he was essentially much faster and mobile than anyone he played against.
Watching Hakeem play basketball, and slowly go through his moves, it may look easy, but just the continuous doing of these moves to have the footwork in the back of your head, so you don't think what move your going to do, it comes naturally to what the defence gives you, is amazing. My favourite big man!

Hakeem is a once in a lifetime talent, he is the most skilled center to have ever played and a tremendous athlete. His movements are so decisive, exact and smooth, that even at this age and years after retirement he was looking better than most current players. Most modern players just rely on their physical gifts to perform, this man relied on his skills and assisted them with his talents. His foot work, weight transfers, spatial awareness and touch were (are) just Awesome! Man is a genius.

Melo is pretty slow at learning. Hakeem was jabbing with this non-pivot foot then dribbling and spun after. Melo is straight away moving with his pivot foot then spinning. The difference is Hakeem's way you draw defenders to the side and you spin to the space left by the defender. Melo's way is traveling plus the defender hasn't moved yet and his is spinning right back at him.

I learned from this, I'm 14 years old and am 5'9 and really needed to learn a way to get by my defenders and I've tried the spin move before I watched this, but I would always lose the ball or travel, but now I know how to complete the spin correctly. Just have to make my shot more consistent and I won't be half bad.

I learned from this, I'm 14 years old and am 5'9 and really needed to learn a way to get by my defenders and I've tried the spin move before I watched this, but I would always lose the ball or travel, but now I know how to complete the spin correctly. Just have to make my shot more consistent and I won't be half bad.
