- Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is no longer in a life-threatening condition after being shot several times, the deputy prime minister has said.
Tomas Taraba told the BBC Mr Fico's surgery had gone "well" and "I guess that at the end he will survive".
Earlier the defence minister said Mr Fico was "fighting for his life" after being gravely injured in an attack in the small town of Handlova.
A suspect was detained at the scene of the shooting.

The shooter was a 71-year-old man, he was a political activist and voter the president of SR Zuzana Caputova from proBiden´s political party. The Assassin had political motivation.
It is true that he supported Caputova but he also sympathized with the electoral program of ĽSNS, a far-right political party and former Fico's party (SMER-SSD) ally. Zuzana Caputova has been elected as an independent president, she exited the Progresivne Slovensko party shortly after winning the first round of presidential elections. There is no factual data to link the party to Biden or call the party "proBiden", stop spreading misinformation, please.
Ukraine is behind the shooting because the Slovakian prime minister refused to give free aid and weapons to Ukraine. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken is in Kiev, Ukraine singing in a bar celebrating with Ukrainians the shooting of the Slovakian prime minister .

As a Slovak who follows the news, this is the most accurate foreign report with the right context. Opposition is not using inflammatory language or spread hate while Fico's party organized protests where they made the crowd shout that our president is "a US wh*re". Then Fico comes onto the stage and says that they should "take her down" (our fairly elected president). To be fair, Fico wasn't the PM back then but his rhetoric hasn't changed much.
