SAVING A DATSUN TRUCK

  • Stumbled across this Datsun truck
On Facebook marketplace and it was only a few miles away.
I definitely don’t need any more projects but this thing needed a new.
Of course it was completely disassembled but honestly who doesn’t like a good puzzle 😬
After loading up every little part (almost) and then hauling it to the shop step one was to dig in and check them bones.

Now we are talking!!! Puddins Fab Shop Blue and a Datsun! I’m in! Actually, now that I think of it, that’s too much of a project, just send her my way, and I’ll take care of it for ya 😂😏

    I had a 67 Datsun PU
after I graduated from HS, I pulled the engine - 1300CC & Trans, and put a small block Chevy and 4 Spd in it. I instantly became the burnout king in my little town of Azusa
    😎

I put an L20B in mine with twin side drafts and it was so much fun to drive. Keep the engine in the Datsun/Nissan family. Lots of great options that are well supported in the after market

You could put a K series Honda engine in it, there's a company called Fabbot Fab that makes an adapter to mate it to the 5 speed AR5 from a Chevy Colorado/Canyon or Solstice/Sky. A K24 would probably be enough power to be pretty fun in a little truck like that.

A quick google search indicates there are plenty of Nissan SR20 4 cyl engine swaps into your 521 truck. Engine swap mounts/kits are availble and the SR20 engine comes in a turbo version. Kinda neat to keep it all Datsun/Nissan.

Back in my 510 days the engine swap options from Nissan Datsun were few, mostly ka24de or sr20. I did see a guy use the ecotec and trans from a Pontiac solstice/Saturn sky. Thinking some more, there was a guy that swapped a Miata engine and trans, as well as suspension into his Datsun truck

I had one of those 60s Datsuns back in the late 70s. The guys in our “club” lowered them and put V6 Colognes from a Capri in them. The Colognes from a Mountaineer, Explorer or Mustang from 10 years or so would do the same thing. Plenty of salvage engines and plenty of parts to rebuild. I’ve got a 4 liter in a Ranger off road truck.

Two real options both from a Nissan Hardbody/Pathfinder. The KA24E or the VG30E, Both of these will fit without too much trouble and came with a 5-speed manual transmission. Unless You want something carbureted. Then the L20B is a good choice.

Same year, I don't believe it. My very first ride was a Datsun pickup the same year. Bought it with cash but didn't have my license yet. The head needed a rebuild, so dad and his mechanic helped me with that. I drove that thing up and down the driveway for weeks, months. Was soo excited!!. A cousin bought it from me eventually, and put a Ford 302 with a 4 speed into it. Trucker smokestacks coming out of the bed just behind the cab. Deadly fast tire eater!!.

240-280Z if you can get it to fit,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I had a 1971 beater that I ran around in for a few years. Daily driver that I took trail running in the mountains and desert... Smoothed the body and painted it with red oxide primer, slapped some old white Mojave rims on it with Ridge Runner tires. Bumped the torsion bars a bit to raise the front end with some air shocks in the rear. Had a blast with it.

These are great trucks. I have had a dozen or so, and everyone of them was a real warrior. the parts were cheap and plentiful, as the local yards were full of them. This one looks to be no different, and it landed at Lucky's what a break for sure. I would stay stock myself, but a 4.3 wouldn't hurt it to bad. they weren't made to handle to much torque.. A great flipper or a parts runner, stock they are cheap to run, and last forever. Be well Lucky.

IMO you should go with the route of the older engine like the L series or Z series 4-cyl, they're very easy to work on despite being a OHC engine, probably as simple as Chevy V8.
If you wanna be complicated, modern Japanese engine swap like SR20 or KA24 or even a Honda K24 swap.

This looks like a fun little project! Your attention to detail is great! You see something that could use a little straightening and you straighten it! Most people would just let it go. As for engine, everyone is probably going to say "K swap it" and that would be OK but, something like a T-Bird Turbo Coupe 2.3 or even the turbo 4 cylinder out of the 2015 and newer Mustangs if you want a little more tech. No matter what you go with, it'll be cool.

Keep it Nissan ;). I've got a 71 521 with an L20b in it- super fun, plenty of power for the light truck... BUT... , a twin cam KA motor out of a '98-'04 frontier would fit well, and gets you around 140hp stock - plenty of torque and bulletproof. (SR20 would be cooler, but too pricey and the intercooler routing gets a bit tight). Nice work as always Lucky!
