Nice review BUT! you missed a couple of the most important reasons for many of us who love this camera. That is how MUCH FUN! it is to shoot with it, and how GOOD LOOKING it is, Sure you can get better cameras technologically speaking BUT most are boring. Anyhow,I hope you get my point. Thank you.

Interesting take... There is definitely a learning curve with Fujifilm products, but once you get there they are fantastic tools. I did find some of our conclusions to be operator error. The good news is that you can sell if for a kings ransom on the second-hand market ;)

It is a wonderful camera and worth the 1.400,-, but not more. People, who are not into the technical aspects of photography and for whom autofocus is important, will be happier with a Sony. But it is a great camera for those, who want to really learn photography.
When it comes to video, again the Sony cameras are way better. I have never made a video with the Fuji owning it 2 years now.
Most people, who pay these crazy prices for the X100V without really knowing what they get and not really into photography will regret it. This said. it is my favourite camera.

I have the X-100F that I bought new. It's great for a carry around when out to do errands or photowalks.or general EDC. I started photography in 1970 and greatly value the OVF/EVF viewfinder. I think a lot of current photographers miss the value of an OVF (excepting Leica users). You mention focusing issues, my camera rarely has that problem.

Around the time of release of this video Fuji released a new mobile app (XApp). It works way better and more steady than the previous one (Camera Remote). But you'll have to update to the simultaniously released new firmware update first, or else it won't work. Hope that works out for you.

Bought brand new one last week! It’s coming to Australia from Sweden. Can’t wait to get my hands on it! And yeah, I paid the premium but it’s not just a camera for me it’s going to be my EDC camera cause my Sony system is too big to carry everywhere, especially when I stroll in the city.

You can also plug a USB-C cable into the camera to get photos off the camera instead of removing the SD card.
I have shot a lot of film, I just paid over $70 CAD to develop 2 disposable cameras my partner used in NYC. The price went up again and it’s unbelievably expensive. I spent hundreds of dollars last summer shooting film and definitely won’t be doing that this year.
My partner just bought this camera and it has been great so far, it has the feel of film- but I don’t have to spend $$ developing film, or time going to and from the store, etc.

This camera was originally a complimentary camera for shooters with the larger Fuji's X, it was often a 35mm lens replacement, a second wedding camera, when the primary had a 56mm on it. A travel camera when the big stuff was too heavy. Some folks managed to use it as a primary but realistically those were in the minority. It meant you could keep your software settings consistent across camera bodies. No one else I believe has the same sensor on their compact cameras as the larger models. This is the 5th Gen, when released those who wanted one could easily get hold of it. The instagram band wagon was a real pain for those who needed it to replace prior sensor colour signature. The only silver cloud is Fuji should be able to invest in newer tech. The 5th Gen X's are better at Point and Shoot but still not top of the pile. As a professional photographer who learnt before Autofocus I can still capture moving kids with an ancient Leica M3. Long story short don't buy this based on what you see on instagram many more shoots then you see have been deleted.

Here doing a wedding and with two sony a9s in the bag with the 85f1.4 and 24f1.4 and the Fuji xt4 and the x100v out in the car but although I wouldn’t use the x100v on a high pace situation I reach for the xt4 over the Sony nearly all the time with the 18mm and 35mm. I just love the shooting experience and how it makes me slow down. Makes you no just shoot any image but makes you think about the light. The angles. The moment. You go from shooting loads to really thinking about when you press the shutter. No camera has given me this feel so yes. It’s not the best at everything but it improves you skills as a photographer by so much. I shot 80 weddings last year so take from that what you will but it’s a different feeling for taking images

Thx for your review but unfortunately you missed the most important features: the hybrid OVF/EVF, leaf shutter and Hyper sync and built in ND filter. In regards to file transfer: just buy a cheap card reader and you can directly transfer your pictures to your phone. Lastly: the af is fast enough, i have a x100 (the original) and even that camera is quick enough if you use single point af and button mash it 😉

I have an X100T; bought an X100V mainly because of reports that the lens was better.
The lens IS better, but generally only wide open and close up, which is not something I would use this camera for. (I have interchangeable lens cameras that are better suited to macro shooting.)
The focusing on the X100V was strange, compared to the older Fuji; it made a "clunk" noise when it focused, and there was a delay between pressing the shutter release and the picture being taken. I began to suspect that my X100V was defective; in any case, it was no better than my X100T. So I returned it.
Glad I didn't sell the X100T first; it's a fun camera for walking around photography, and didn't cost me $1500. (with tax and shipping.)

I got an X100T and still have it now. Yes, the focus is not as well as my z6, but I do get one out of 5 in the focus shot when I take quick-moving object like a running dog. It was a great little camera when shooting on the street as people think you using a vintage camera and they will smile at you compared to a DSLR. The app on the other hand, I don't have any issues with it. Maybe all I transferred is JPEG file than RAW. That my experience of a x100T user :P

I feel like you missed the mark on this camera. I think you reviewing this camera from the perspective of what it’s not intended for lol. It’s not marketed or intended to be a crazy fast AF camera like a Sony Alpha. It’s also not some sort of crazy good video camera, it was never meant to be that. I’ve never had any issues with autofocus.
This is a supposed to be lightweight, point and shoot camera intended for quick snaps and street shots.

I’ve never had an issue downloading photos to my iphone11. I have read that some have experienced issues. My recommendation:
Make sure your camera and phone are up to date.
    1. Navigate to your phone's WiFi settings page
    2. Power on X100v
    3. On the camera menu, navigate to Shooting Settings > Wireless communication and hit OK
    4. On the phone, connect to the X100V 'network'
    5. On the camera, hit Menu/OK to continue connection to the phone
    6. On the phone, navigate to the Fujifilm app
    7. Select the images to download from the camera and hit the 'Import' button
    8. On the phone, hit OK
    9. Power off camera and enjoy your images

Hi Tilly, an outstanding review of this fascinating but overhyped camera. I am a travel and portrait photographer that shoots digital and film. Do you think the Nikon ZF vintage style camera is a better option for a travel and street photographer? Thanks for the thought provoking content.

    • @tillyshull
      @tillyshull  7 месяцев назад

Yes. If you are going to spend that kind of money I would go with the Zf over the x100v every time. There are other options out there, such as the Sony RX1R, which is also fun to shoot with. Personally, I believe the ZF is a higher quality product. Paired with the right lens (40mm or shorter), it would be perfect for travel and street photography.

I shot some of my most beloved pictures on the original X100 around 10 years ago. Got it for $400 used and nobody cared about that camera range back then 🙂 I eventually sold it because the auto focus on the original model was soooooo slow - kind of regret selling it now!

I also had the original X100 and shot some of my favorite pics with it. I never had this experience with the V model. I am normally no one who is obsessed with technical details, but there was something about how the original model rendered which felt more "film like" or "vibrant" which I never got from any other digital camera. Funnily I know a few guys who rebought the original X100 despite its lacking speed:)) As for the V model I think the review is spot on. I rather travel with a little Sony Camera which fits in your pocket, has zoom and quick autofocus, its more fun. And also the recipes still don't really look like film, I mean they are ok, but so are many Lightroom presets, so I also really do not get the huge hype.

As a Fuji guy, my daily driver is the XT-5. However I do own the X100v.
My experience is a bit different to yours though. I would say, that some of your points has to do with you and spending more time with the camera. I have for instance custom buttons for everything. So, regarding focus, I have a button changing the different ways of focusing as well as the size of the focusing area. I change this depending on the situation, and i can do it pretty quickly too. This way, the camera only focuses on the things that I want it too, and it works great for me.
I do agree that the app is *cough* Shit... But I dont upload to instagram or anything, so i dont need the photos on my phone. However, I have no problem connecting the app, but it does loose connection on occasion or freeze in some way. I mainly use the app for 'settings backup' though. (As of writing this comment, I think a few updates has come out since, both app and firmware)
Otherwise I personally like the camera. Mostly because of the size and the Fuji sims.. To be able to walk around all day, and have it under a shirt if need be is perfect. I also have two batteries, and that has alway been enough for 1 day, I often dont even change the battery.
Regarding the video, i 100% agree. This is just bad. I only use 300mbps drives, and it just overheats. However, i never really shoot video anyway. But still, this shouldnt be an issue.
And yes, this camera is waaaayy overpriced for what you get. Its a great camera, but for that price you could almost just buy the XT-5 or an A7.
My verdict is, that if you manage to get a good price and you want something simple, that can take amazing photos, easy to carry, stealthy in its own way, snap a few shots and on your way, the x100v is the camera is for you.
I you are a pro or someone who is an addict of zoom lenses, dont buy it. You'll feel that you missed two trillion shots because of the limited "35mill"
I dont think that its overrated. Because the Fuji sims generally are amazing. If you need lightroom, you might as well shoot raw and have all your presets at hand anyway, and that sort of defeats the point of this nimble little camera. This is my view anyway.

Seems you have issues with it and haven't really bonded with it. Yes the price is a little over the mark but this should die down soon. It's a solid camera and there is a reason a lot of people are keeping and using it. Ofcourse there are a lot of people getting it to gain social media likes for new YT videos but they only use for a month or two and then move onto something new.

I agree but I would buy it again! I use back button focus via the zone focusing method. Can't go wrong this way and it's faster. I don't want the images to transfer to my smartphone. I wan't them on my computer afterwards. If I want photo's on my iPhone , I will take the Photo's with my iPhone. For work I also own a bunch of Nikon full frame camera's but the "V" is my favorite. Paying $2k for any Fujifilm camera (aside from the GFX system, which I use) is mind boggling to me. I've had every X100 camera except for the V, and still have the OG X100. I love them but they are nowhere near Leica money, nor are they built like one either. The film simulations sell these cameras and it's crazy to me that they are just now catching on with the zoomer generation. My advice is NEVER pay over $1000 for one of these cameras. Get yourself an X-E3 that currently runs between $300-$500. It's smaller than the X100V and you can change lenses!

Cool channel. Look forward to more videos.
I have had the X100F since early 2018. I can see your points about it. All valid and should be taken into consideration when looking at it. I think your honest take on this camera is refreshing over all the other "Go out and buy the best thing since slided bread" RUclipsrs.
Although I have never used the V version, I have not had issues with missed focus, except in some of the worst lighting situations. Maybe it is a settings issue. I mistakenly had Pre-AF turned on and was missing focus a lot. Turned that off and have not had an issue since. Additionally, it was certainly not designed for fast action photography. It was really marketed to the street photography/lifestyle photography groups. I love it as a lightweight portable EDC. I also have the TCL and WCL teleconverters to give me a 28mm and 50mm option (not the digital converter).
I also have a number of Nikon film and digital bodies and lenses. As well as a number of P&S digicams.
Right now, I have my X100F set up as a 28mm camera (with the WCL mounted). My 35mm setups are the Nikon Z fc as a 35mm camera (Voigtlander 23mm manual focus) and the Nikon L35AF film camera. And my Nikon FM and Z 5 setup as my 50mm cameras (native Nikkor lenses). This makes it easy to grab a camera and go and just focus on one focal length.

I was using a Canon 5DMiv plus the 16-35f2.8L III + 24-70f2.8L II + several other lenses for street photography. So glad I didn't sell the ''iv''. I guess it all boils down to what you're use too. Seriously considering the Leica Q3. I'm at an age where it'll probably be the last camera I'll ever buy................or need. We'll see.

I used a Fuji X100S several years back, and it was a nice camera, but the only things I really miss from it are the built-in ND filter and the smaller form factor. Even if I tripled the sensor output, got the focus even faster and ... I dunno, it made me lunch? I still wouldn't feel it. It's very nice for what it is, but I am never happy with the JPG "recipe" results, and would rather just shoot film or a more capable digital camera for that price. I can hardly wrap my head around spending $2,000 on it and not at least having a full frame sensor or interchangeable lenses. The camera is just the tool and blah blah ... But the endless race for new and better just has me burned out and I'm happy with film. ha ha.

I had the X100F, and sold it. No regrets. I just couldn't get over the high number of out-of-focus images. esp when it came to taking pictures of 2 very active kids. The same applies to my other 2 Fujifilm cameras, - XT20 and XT3 - but they are not in a brilliant shape to sell, otherwise, I would close down the Fujifilm chapter. they have not been used that much, but the viewfinder is falling off, there is a weird line (not a crack) on my display, the skin on the XT20 is coming off, etc etc, and very likely it would cost the same to fix as the potential selling price, so not going to invest in repairs. also editing the images in LR is not exactly a joy as LR can not properly handle the Fujifilm files. So, my frustration with the brand is significant. size, the form factor and price are a significant consideration, BUT.... On the other hand, this is the only brand I got heavily invested in, and have no idea how I would handle other brands... what kind of experience it would be to use their cameras. One thing is for sure: I can never ever rely on reviews online, incl on youtube, where 99% of the reviews and reviewers are tainted.

At last an honest review. I have a Canon R5 and I wanted an lightweight small camera to take with me more places than I take my Canon + lenses and was better than my iPhone 14 pro max. I managed to get a used 100V for £1200 so didn’t pay a crazy price. It’s a good camera, esp for street photography, but it has limitations, esp with focusing on anything that is moving. I have just installed the latest firmware (3.01) and one of the improvements is meant to be focusing . I have not tried it yet, but fingers crossed it better. Would I buy it again? Probably not, for £1200 it’s just not THAT much better than my iPhone, will I keep it, yes if the focusing has been improved.

Yes… I know there is a hype. That is not why I got mine… (I have been interested since the first model…). Having been a photographer for more than 50 years, some of my best shots were with a Leica M4 and a 35mm. Long story with those long gone cameras, but this is indeed a modern match to that “perfect combo”, without having to spend 10K$$ or more… I have used it as my prime camera for the last year and I really like it for what it is, that is: A compact 35mm camera, but a tiny bit smaller! It has got restrictions, but also some cons, like the built-in ND filter and the shutter in the lens.
Kudos to the both of you… Yes, I like guitars too. 😅

If you can’t depend on the focus it’s basically useless, IMO.
I do love a 35mm focal length on a full frame sensor. I was so excited when the Canon 5D was released. Finally an “affordable” FF digital camera! I used the Canon 35 1.4 on it most of the time. If it were up to me, I’d call a 35 the "normal" lens for a FF rather than a 50.

You can depend on the focus with this camera , this is user error, either how it’s setup or using it. I’m no master of photography but what she said is just not true. I’m hardly a Fuji fan boy, I’m almost primarily a Olympus/OMS user and the 100v is the only one I’ve found a interesting camera in the Fuji lineup.

It's not a point and shoot, you used this camera wrong, misjudged the camera, it's not for video but has some video features, it wasn't made for shoot and spray, but to slow down, think the shot, and have a similar feel like a film camera. If you leaved in the era of film cameras, you wouldn't be a photographer because of this rush to take 7000 shots. i can show you several youtube channels that just make breathtaking images. every month there are 4 billion 200 million shots made, nothing remains digital in 20 years, but shots made with x100v are timeless if you frame them, has a time and a feel. it's overpriced??? than Leica owners should hide? oh just heard you say will it replace this my film camera :) think of it as a film camera but you have more than 36 shots! and don't have to change the film in it

Except it is praised by youtubers as a perfect street photography camera. Street photography camera with autofocus issues? Don't get me wrong - I did a lot of film photography in my early days, I have tons of manual lenses, but for street photography I want fast and reliable autofocus. Otherwise I will miss a lot of shots.
Fundamentally she is right, there are plenty of cameras on the market that do basically the same, and even better in terms of IQ, but for the fraction of X100v price. Ricoh GR3x offers IBIS, and much more compact design for half the price. Sony A7c offers full frame sensor with IBIS and interchangeable lens mount, for the same price. Paired with something like Sony 40mm f2.5 you get the same small setup, with much better features and IQ.
I am not saying that Fuji is a bad camera - it's just way overhyped and way overpriced for what it is.

AGAIN, did you had one in your hand??? have you used it? it's not about taking 215 shots in 3 seconds, it's about moving the focus point, focus on the target and push the button. The real price of the camera is 899 dollars, not 2000, so if you expect to be very fast for 2000 dollars camera, then blame the tik tokers. Do you have any ideea how many recipes you have in that camera or you can make? at least 100, find what you like and you will se epeople reactions, wow you must have a very espensive camera, these are so good@@bladerunner.1984

And this person has no idea what she's talking about. Digital won't last 20 by but 100v is timeless. 😂😂. Sorry I'm late but don't listen to the bozo in the main comment saying this is not a point and shoot and you wouldn't be a photographer in the film days. I'm a photographer from the film days, they get these people who just got into Film cause it was trendy and that's who that person is clearly. We always instructed people to take as many photos as possible when shooting film. The more you shoot the better you will be. We didn't shoot film to slow down we shot film cause there was no other choice! These kids get into film and talk talking about a slow down process? People that slowed down back then was because of cost, even though it was cheaper then it still cost money so you would think about every shot causing you to slow down. Once the DSLR cameras came in everyone said goodbye to film. Yes we loved film but we loved creating more, and slowing down was not even a thought. Take your 7000 shots and don't listen to these 🤡. Also Fujifilm views X100v as a hybrid Point and shoot with video features. This camera in no way was made to slow down or feel like film. Fuji is moving towards hybrid. Literally go to Fuji website and read, before you leave a 🤡 response.

I loved mine but sold it.
It turns out that I am a long lens type of guy.
I really enjoy the compression that big glass gives to an image.
I owned it for long enough to realise that the images I was taking were not giving me any buzz. Boring is another way of saying it.
I found myself taking a series of images, then merging them together and then cropping the "B Jesus" out of them looking for something and not finding it.
As an aside this method does give great stadium images but it is limited.
When looking at street photography photos I am drawn to what turns out to have been taken with long glass.
It wasn't something I thought about until I bought and tried the X100.
The main part of my photography has been shooting equestrian sports and I have been lucky enough to have owned some truly beautiful lens, 200-400 f4, 200 f2, 70-200 f2.8 and a 500 f4.
I sold all my Nikon gear and moved back to Fuji where my digital life began with a fuji S5000 many year ago.
    When I sold the X100 I purchased a XF 100 - 400.
I have also recently purchased the Viltrox 75mm f1.2 which I intend to try out as a street lens.
It is not the longest piece of glass I know but maybe it will get me closer to where I'm trying to get.
I was chasing something new when I bought the X100v but I never achieved satisfaction with it.
It really is a stunning little camera and I always enjoyed picking it up, but that is never a reason for owning such a tool, it has to scratch that itch.
For those looking at such a camera or lenses that are in the 24mm range I would ask what are you drawn to.
Take a little bit of time and study some photos.
You might well find that you too are a "Long Lens" type of guy.

OMG! Thank you for telling the truth about this camera. I thought I was the only one that had this problem. I actually purchased 2 of them 2yrs ago and returned both of them. I had the exact focusing problem on both cameras. it would even miss focus on complete static subjects after confirming focus with the little green square. I posted this problem on several Fuji groups and no one else seemed to have it or know about it. I own several other Fuji cameras including the original X100 and granted it's slower but at least it focuses when it confirms focus. I also picked up the X-T5 recentley and with the new 2.0 firmware the focusing system is pretty awesome but I am still going to say not quite up there with Sony yet. The X1000V is a pretty cool looking camera I just wish it would have worked right when I got mine.

You should have bought the XT3 or the XPro3. The 100’s are not for any type of video nor fast subject focus. Heck I wouldn’t even use it for street photography. It is an intro to camera. If you recognize this before buying it then you understand the many possibilities for shortcomings. No camera is perfect but knowing “the nature of the the tool” will help you make a better buying decision. This apply to all brands and not only in photography. Now, the person knowledge and skill are also imperative for good results. Photography is a very slow artistic process, even when the decision making process to create might seem fast it is NOT! Great video, thanks for providing your points of view to help those who just follow others in their choices or that are just not that much into the art of photography.
Ps. This is my opinion and it is NOT an attack on you in any way or form. You are more than knowledgeable in the subject. Blessings to you and your loved ones not only today but always!
