Occams Razor well considering how advanced they are there "engineering" terminology would probably be closer to high end theoretical physics terminology for us.
Engineering is engineering. Though I admit that while I work with MCUs and SoCs and math and code every day I've had a hell of a time trying to decipher 20th century schematics built around electromechanical relays or vacuum tubes. So it kinda goes both ways, if the tech is offset either way by too many decades then it's just as complex to figure out.

The cast were exceptional in this show, especially once they got comfortable with each other and became friends. RDAs comic timing and delivery was always perfect and seemed so natural. I could do with watching all these again in order.

I love the look on Daniel Jacksons face when O'Neill says 'that's not our language' and then quickly walks away. I'm sure that was improvised 'cause latter Richard Dean Anderson turned around and gave him a look but still in character. It was great to see this show from the beginning through the end and watch the main characters and actors grew together and then play off each other. I'm sure there was a lot of improvisation especially from Richard Dean Anderson. You can often see Amanda Tapping holding back laughing at something he says or does. One of the great shows of all time for me. I only wish they could have ended it with a great film.

Maybe. Maybe not. But the key thing is that O'neill will never even try. The Jack O'neill effect is that you've convinced everyone, including yourself, that you're an idiot despite being quite intelligent.
I think canon background says O'Neill has a degree in aeronautical engineering from the AF Academy, and personal interest in astronomy. He might be able to understand some of the manual, but probably nowhere near as much as Carter.

Look up Jup and Tenat. Though a bit rubbery in my opinion. I think Stargate's "galactic populus" is the most viable, with both abductions and evolutions occurring. Although the Unas and Goa'uld are the prime examples of otherworldly aliens originating in our Galaxy, off-world. Incidentally the Unas are well-done as well in terms of makeup. Excuse me for rambling, I get a little too excited when discussing Stargate SG-1.
Its interesting they never did much with those races of aliens wich could have become important allies after the earth created such a strong fleet of spaceships themselves later on.

Hardest task any new show will have is finding a group with the easy commeraderie of SG-1. In ten years together their interactions never got old.
