One night, Marion Lorne appeared on the Johnny Carson Tonight show. She was on just before "The world's greatest authority, Professor Irwin Cory". When Cory came on he began his usual bombastic performance. Marion Lorne, off camera at first, responded with her trademark silent nervous reaction. The audience was SCREAMING IN LAUGHTER. She was immediately on camera with Irwin Cory. He became angrier and angrier as the audience responded with greater and greater laughter to HER performance. Irwin Cory, in a fit of jealous rage, told Johnny that he would never come on his show again and never be on stage again with Marion Lorne. Throughout Cory's jealous rage, Marion Lorne sat quietly, and nervously playing her role. The audience continued to scream with laughter. That night Professor Irwin Cory was shown to be a small and jealous man. And Marion Lorne was shown to be a VERY funny performer! I also remember her on Garry's weekly variety show. Once, Garry showed advertisements from the London newspapers announcing her upcoming performance. The advertisement did not state the name of the play or revue...just that Marion Lorne was performing in it. He said that just that announcement was enough to sell out the theater! On one episode of Garry's show the dancers were doing the "Turkey Trot" for the "Wonderful Year" segment. Marion, distressed with how they were being taught to do it, interrupted the rehearsal and taught the dancers herself!! Her role as Aunt Clara was just one small part of a show business career that lasted over fifty years form the London stage to American television. She was wonderful, just wonderful!

She married an English playwright and they lived in England starting the Whitehall Theatre. Whitehall Farces were famous, not to mention a riot! Just her name in an advertisment was enough to fill seats in a theatre in London, people often having no idea what play they were to see. Miss Lorne won a Best Supporting Actress Emmy for Aunt Clara. Unfotunately she died ten days before the ceremony, Elizabeth Montgomery accepted the award. Members of the cast of Bewitched said Miss Lorne was very much like her character but smart!
