Why do scales sound $#@& when YOU use them?

When I first started playing bass, I was super focused on practicing scales. I got to the point where I could play them pretty fast, but I always felt like something was missing.
The problem was that I’d learnt them in a fairly boring and predictable way, which was totally disconnected to any other aspect of music.
But scales are AWESOME if you approach them in the right way.
In today’s new video I’m going to show you some actionable exercises that you can start using right away to make your own practice more musical.
And if that sounds crazy, you’re right, it is - but they work… and it’s easy. And pretty soon, you’ll be able to reach for ‘that note in your head’ a lot faster.
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

This is definitely one of the most useful lessons I’ve seen anywhere on the internet in a long while. I love super practical stuff like this!
The bar is very low anyway
@@BrunoNeureiter the bar is not VERY low. There are multiple crazy good bass lesson channels.
Bruno Neureiter nah there’s plenty of great stuff if you know what you want.

Scott I cannot begin to thank you for this! Everyone kept saying soloing just came to them! I felt like a proper idiot at times when jamming too! Thank you for breaking it down like this. Please do more videos on soloing and improvisations.

Yeah this shit really helped me A LOT. I have been having what is basically a mental breakdown every time I am supposed to take a solo. I am so damn happy he tied it all together like this. Terrible music RUclips channels always make clickbait vids about "suck at soloing? DO THIS ONE THING", and then they just show you some average dumb ass shit like a single box shape for the Pentatonic scale. But this one ACTUALLY explains shit. Hell yeah.
Great 4 decades of home school and now I get it...Thank you professor !
wish I could have had this lesson years ago. almost got emotional. 70 years old still gigging and still learning,. thank you so much.
Just the bass audio is a classic song in the making.
It's not just the notes, but the space between them! Thanks for breaking this down. The more I understand, the more I want to learn!
I wish this was available when I was young and arthritis free. Best Bass guitar channel on the web!
It’s as if your lessons, which were already great, got a even better over night... loving the current format/flow and overall presentation! Best bass channel on RUclips
As much fun as the history and list videos are - THIS is the sort of thing I like to see. More videos like this, please!
These should price a thousand dollars but you are teaching for free! Thank you!
actually love this channel so much!🎸
Unsubscribe from Steve Terreberry right now.😂 You are now one of us this is a cult. We do not support such people around here.
This!!! More of this! I love the useful application of years of obtained, yet esoteric knowledge. This kind of stuff has been "The Missing Link" of my 40+ years of playing. That's why I have always been a strong support/groove player (and worked a lot) but never felt like stepping out front and doing a practice session in front of an audience. Well done Scott! Please give us more of this.... and perhaps dedicate a course or two towards this in SBL! I have been a member for many many years, but this is the first time I have been compelled to stand up and applaud! Well done indeed!
This is one of the best lessons I've seen from you Scott. You've made the entire concept very easy to understand and I really appreciate this new found perspective on scales.
Scott you're the best teacher ever! You were born to do this. Thank God you decided to create Scottsbasslessons. I would love to see more of this lesson. I know my scales and arpeggios, but i still struggle to make it sound like "music", if you know what i mean. Fortunately i improved a lot thanks to you and your videos. Thanks for all your help. Keep going, please.
I hope I’m doing well for someone who has been playing bass for just 2 years. I finally understand 3rd 4ths and 5ths and so on thanks to you. I’ve just learnt music up to this point and really want to start writing and this video worked a world of wonders! Thanks Scott 🖤👁👁
I would actually love to see a full mini series on improvisation as I find myself really stuck on the problem of using scales properly as I'm kinds of a newbie in bass
Hell yeah! Keep sharing material like this on your channel!
I like the exercises you covered in this vid. The HOW, and WHY, or rudiments (in drumming). Keep helping us to understand the building blocks... Scott. Like you said, the solos will naturally follow. Every great bassist seems to play their own style, anyway. We must learn to master the (hidden) SYNTAX, and make it sound like real music.
Scott this is exactly what I needed, thanks so much. Keep making videos like this!
This is the best information ever heard about using scales. This is why I joined your SBL member and never regret it. Awesome lesson as usual. Thanks a lot Scott!
Best scale/melody lesson I’ve seen. Easy to understand. Brilliant
Yes! More of this, please, it's really helpful.
Of course, I would love more content like this. Thank you always for your work, Scott.
Hell yeah you just blew my mind with that phrase. Omg!!! Thank you for this video Scott
Yaas! Do more videos like this. Great job Scott!
Scott, your language analogy to bass line musical scales is brilliant.
Good God! A much needed lightbulb moment as I struggle thru music theory in my old age and try to move past 40 years of country and classic rock.
Great lesson! Hell yes I would like more improvisation vids and lessons like this one are why I keep coming back. This hit me between the eyes because I was practicing earlier and felt these holes in my playing.
That was a real life-changing one! Thank You, Scott!!
Hell yeah!!! This is absolutely the kind of video I needed, thank you Scott so much for this!!
HELL YEAH!!! I loved this explanation of how you go about forming solos and bass lines
Hi Scott. Yes I would appreciate more lessons like this. I've spent the last few months practising different scale and modes etc but I am finding them tricky to use meaningfully.
Hell yeah! One of my favourite lessons by far. Great work with editing as well.
listen to: the word as law by neurosis. you‘ll learn every minor scale possible in a musical context. dave is a genius.
Just listen to Neurosis full stop! I love the tone of the bass on that one
that is a purely AWESOME recording!
yes please!!! this has been one of your most helpful videos for me
Finally, some clarity! Thank you
Yes Please! More Please! Great Stuff Scott!
HELL YEAH !!!! I’ve been lost for years with knowing the scales and working appegios not understanding how to make it sound musical!!! Thank you Scott for clearing the air!
Yes! This is exactly what I've been looking for!! Thanks so much!
This was one of the most helpful videos I've seen in a while. You have me looking at the whole fretboard differently. I still have a lot of work to do but I feel like just watching this made me a significantly better player
Hey Scott Devine. Been a subscriber for a few years now. THIS MATERIAL IS GOLDEN! Would love to see more videos with this content. "Phrasing" scales to sound musical is where my bass playing journey has been in a plateau. This video is exactly where all my bass playing questions come from.
I've been waiting so long for such clear and practical explanations !! Two years of jazz impro class and no one has been capable of explaining things in a way which was not over complicated and challenging (what really questions me about those teachers' ability to teach...). Please keep making videos like this one! By the way I am not properly a bass player (I only play a little) but a violonist and still, your videos are so helpfull when it comes to understand music in itself. Thanks a lot !
Hell yeah.
I would like to see more about this! It's a good lesson Scott. You're the man. The Bloke.
This was awesome! This is exactly what I'm looking for in bass learning content. Hell yeah!
Definitely love to see more of this. So useful. Unlocking so much for me.
Hell yeah
I always pick up something great from you Scott
Keep bringing cool content like this
definitely one of the most practically useful lessons I've ever seen on youtube, thanks so much man
ABSOLUTELY !!!!!!!!!! I WANT MORE ! This was very very helpful ! Thank you soooo much !
Great, Scott! The third tip was the best one!
Please continue this good work, this good subject! I'd love another video like this, with more exercises!
And you could also make a nice video about rithm and timing!
Thanks!
Thank you Scott!♥️
This is your best video. I have been trying to figure out what to use for improvisation and how modes play into things and with this video it just clicked!
You are an excellent teacher.
Please do more of this kind of thing. It's really the nitty-gritty of playing. It's the how and why. Thank you!
Makes total sense. Without extra clever language. Refreshing... making it stand out.
I just found this video and, by extension, your channel and let me just tell you that you really helped me out in understanding some stuff that I've been struggling for years! Thank you very much sir!
Very valuable lesson, Scott. Thank you!
Holy crap more of this please!! This helped licks and fills finally start making sense along with your video on Shapes.
Thank you!!
Fantastic. This is referred to as Mother of Tongue or Word of Mouth. One of the most eye opening "discovery" moments in one's musical development. Great job on the content as well as presentation. Your personality and zeal for music makes you one of the most enjoyable, entertaining and effective teachers out there. Kudos!
Such a great inallergy to learn the alphabet doesn’t mean you can speak a language. Great way to put it. Been stuck in linear patterns for years. This is so good Scott
Awesome to hear Brett!
Huge lesson, thank you Scott
Yes please! Really loved this lesson too
I was addicted to Meth and living in my car and this video SAVED MY LIFE !!!! Thx 🙏 Scott !!!
Just what I needed to make my scale work for me. Thank you Scott, more Videos like this one will be GREAT.
🧡🧡🧡
Seriously??? You've waited THIS long to teach us this!!!!!???? Lol
Thanks, love your channel
Scotts bass lessons just hit 1 milion
Holy mole!!! I've been looking for that light switch for a couple of years. Thanks for shedding some light! This one video will give me enough to move forward for the next couple of months or more.🤘
This is probably the most valuable lesson I've ever had from you, thank you brother 🤘🏻❤️
You are right, thank you for this lesson!
PLEASE, PLEASE provide more lessons like these! This was GREAT!
Hell yes! This lesson helped my understanding and musical context. I would love more videos on how to tie scales into actual music. Great lesson Scott!
No one has never explained this so simple! Incredible video, Scott! Keep it comming!
Excellent. I'm new to your channel, and tend to get bogged down in details when learning. The analogy of scales as alphabet was immediately an open door. I've always struggled with application, and this was an immense help. Thank you.
HellYeah! I need more of those!
More leaks, more passages, more about styles explanations. Everything what stays behind learning stuff we are said to be learned!
HELL YEAH !!, actually this type of exercise "sequenced intervals" was mentioned by Jaco Pastorius him self in one of his interviews and i was searching for this type of exercises thank you scott for making it happen
That's right. Felix Pastorius showed similar exercises aswell in his interview/lesson with Scott. 🙂

I think applying theory to playing is the most valuable thing you can teach us. Show us how all of these scales and modes are used in a practical application. We want to better ourselves as players and showing us how to apply it all to music and real playing is invaluable. Thanks Scott. Excellent video!
Yes. Please continue.
Thank you Scott I really Dig the Way you break Down Learning and Teaching me Something on my Bass I don't mind Sheeding at all Thank you Scott 👍👍👍👍
Hell yes, this material is GOLD.
Yes, more of this stuff please!
Scott it's brilliant lesson!!!! Love being your member!
Absolutely!! More stuff like this, next up Modes and how you incorporate both scales and modes into things like soloing. Or just noodling around as a finger exercise.
Oh hell yes do some more stuff like this. This video was a true revelation for me.
Long time waiting some info like this stuff!! Thanks!! Extremely useful!! 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Yes! We want more videos like this one!
Always great lessons with in a short time 🙌 best mentor ! God bless you sir.
Huge respect 🙏🙏🙏
Great lesson, Scott. Lots to practice.
This was extremely helpful. More of this type of thing would definitely be welcome!
I had a teacher that showed me scales, but that was nearly all I learned from him. Everything else I know is pretty much self taught. I’m glad I found this channel. I’ve learned so much stuff I never knew!
Excellent lesson...one I'm going to keep in the toolbox and refer to often.
This is the most useful lesson for me so far. I needed to hear this years ago.
very helpful. Good approach because the linear lines are good too, but now connected. Thank you very much
Yes!! We need more of that
Wow. Amazing lesson, thank you Scott. 🔥🔥 I would like to watch more content like this.
Love this video. Lots to grasp onto here. Great stuff.
I want to see more stuff like this Scott. Thank you
Hey Scott! I do tend to fumble around until I hear a phrase I like, will definitely be trying out this approach! I thank ya!
Yeah, Scott! Great content! Please, do more of this stuff. Cheers! 🇧🇷
This is one of the best lessons I've seen on this channel :D
HELL YEAH SCOTT! Keep on like that!
Hell yeah! I would like to watch more of this type of content. I'm from Argentina and I have learned a lot from you videos. Thanks!
Excellent lesson Scott - thanks.
