  • In the summer of 2015, we bought a gutted 1972 Airstream Overlander, gutted it some more, and then built it out into our dream home on wheels. This is a snapshot of the work that went into it.
    Renovation completed early June through November 7th of 2015. Still living in it full time and loving everything about it to this day.

    I am truly impressed with the team work! I own 2 vintage Overlanders (1970 & 1974). They are both complete shell off restorations. The '70 is almost complete, but the '74 is still shell off. Complete new frame and axles. I especially like what you did with the bed. Would love to get some specs on design. Great job

      One of the best resources I've used is the User Guide that came with my '76 31 footer. It breaks down a lot of things you need to know to maintain and fix your rig. Even some things I thought would be outdated! Airforums.com is also an amazing resource! People are extremely helpful on there! Good luck!

    • @brandonfox1822
      @brandonfox1822 6 лет назад +2

      I second Andy S on the service manual! Pretty sure they didn't start making service manuals until 72 though, so you might be out of luck. Still, the user manual will probably be helpful for knowing all the systems as they were originally installed. And Airforums is the single best resource for any questions, hands down. Good luck!

      Oh, and we got our cabinetry cut at a friend's wood shop who let us use his CNC router. It was definitely handy :) But still had to do a lot of additionally cutting/sanding/tweaking during the install. But it was a great starting point for everything.

    Hi guys! Just came home with a 74 Sovereign and after looking at it without rose colored glasses, I thought WTF have I done!? Your video has given me a ton of encouragement already. Thanks for taking the time to put this together.Question: your windows seem to have been spared the dreaded silver peel. Or, did you take them apart and clean the insides?

    • @scottbloos6065
      @scottbloos6065 6 лет назад

      I have recently started a '75 Sovereign Int, and am at the same point with the "WTF have I done" thing. Mine was heavily damaged by mice and it seems like the project just keeps getting bigger and bigger! The windows in ours does have the silver peel and it looks like there is a lot of work to be done in order to fix that as well. Hopefully I can keep the positivity and motivation to keep grinding through the seemingly endless task of refurbishment! Good luck with yours too!

    Currently deciding what to do with ours.

    • @brandonfox1822
      @brandonfox1822 6 лет назад +3

      Used the same interior skins! We washed them real good while they were out, and then primed with STIX - which is a VERY important step. Then we painted. You couldn't scratch the paint off if you tried!

  • @andys.1895
    @andys.1895 6 лет назад +1

    Hey guys I love the progress! I'm super curious though, why did you paint the frame under the subflooring? I'm assuming it has something to do with protecting it against rust right??

    • @brandonfox1822
      @brandonfox1822 6 лет назад +2

      Yep, we sanded off the rust that was there (not much thankfully) and then painted it with Rustoleum or something, I forget what exactly we used. Just a good step you might as well do if you have the frame exposed.

    My wife and I just gutted our 1979 Excella 500. How long did it you from start to finish? hours per day?

    • @thefoxesphotography1572
      @thefoxesphotography1572  7 лет назад +2

      Thanks! Oh man, we did like 3 months of pretty intermittent work doing all the tear down and stuff, with long days here and there. But as soon as we had the subfloor replaced and started building it back up, it was 3 more months of full time work, with 8-12 hour days most times. Not saying all those hours were super productive though, lots of indecision and trial and error haha. Good luck on your reno!
