“I’d like to think that if you worked for Rolls Royce in the 1970s and you ever mentioned the words handling or sporty, you’d have been fired.” -James May
One of the best Phantom reviews I've seen because he puts you directly behind the wheel so you can get an idea of what it's like to drive it. Thankfully there's no fake British accent or mention of Grey Poupon mustard. 🙂
13:38 the only thing I can think of to compare is a Toyota Century. That's JDM ultra luxury, and please drive and review a Toyota Century if you can, Tedward!
It’s amazing how quiet that car is. That cabin is so isolated from outside noises that it took me a while to realize how softly you were actually talking!
I remember these Rolls Royces appearing in every rap video imaginable. If you wanted to be the ultimate in luxury and bling, this Rolls was that car. So luxurious and so fast that This Rolls had to be a gangster car. Immaculate.
I had the pleasure on doing some work and driving a Phantom several years back and it is still one of my favorite cars. The presence is unequaled and I loved the quality feel of everything. If something looks like metal it is metal. The same can’t be said for pretty much anything else. The new Mercedes are SUPER cheesy in comparison.
Just on that engine - yes, the architecture is BMW and it's probably built by BMW, but the specification is 100% Rolls Royce - ignition/injection mapping, camshaft profiles, valve timing, even piston specification - everything that makes it tick was decided in Goodwood not in Munich.
@@TedwardDrives I don't think the repairs are THAT bad. Not sure about the Drophead but I think the Phantom shares many mechanical parts with the 760Li
Yes we enjoyed ! :) Thanks for this overview of a pretty rare car, in a nice area and landscape. Can't imagine testing a RR in the Parisian trafic or in any big unsafe city, making tests so stressful. Big Mercedes and german cars'fan , but definitely voiceless by a Bentley or a RR, it's as usual, another world, just uncomparable.
I remember when this car came out on the market, I was stunned with the design. As mentioned in previous videos, I'm more of a Porsche guy, but RR's has always been something interesting. This car had a lot of features and design quirks that made this super interesting. Also with some of the typical Rolls aesthetics, this one started the trend we know today with their vehicles. I dont think you can really compare this with Bentley or Maybach, personally I think those two are closer together than Rolls Royce does. But Rolls certainly is on a whole different level. Still, you can either agree or disagree with its design, but it still makes people look up when a Rolls Royce passes by or drives up. No matter what era it was made in.
I always got the impression that the lucky ones are not the owners, but the chaffeurs who drives it. It's really beautifull, heavy, seems like driving a truck on my simulator. I can feel you driving and having to watch every corner. And the most rewarding thing here is that you can see the front of the car. It gives you the feeling of safety, because you seem to know where every part of this car actually are. Even though in US it's much more easier to buy a expensive car, people will always look to a Rolls-Royce with a special look. It never lose it charm. If old cars could come back to a accessible reality, i'm sure a lot of people would buy those.
Tungsten always makes me think about darts, you know, the little throwing arrows. 😂 Really posh car, smooth engine AF, and yeah you hold the wheel on those below half way because you're not going to be seen actually steering a rolls. Steering is something the pleb does.
Such a great car. Love the tv lap top. The inside of the trunk side was bare and needing covering. The back seat was wired if stationary. Loved the beginning star light.
Hey Tedward. Love the videos. It’s so cool how many cool cars you’re able to drive. If you’re able to I think that a r35 would be a sick video. Much love from MN
To properly review this car, I think you need to hire someone with a British accent to drive it, and you do the review from the back seat. ;) Great vid as always!
I actually like the fact that this particular model is devoid of features and options. Just the car and no gimmicks, the way it should be. If I had the money to buy one, I wouldn’t spec the starlight headliner or the massaging seats nor would I spec the refrigerator.
I agree. The latest RR’s have tipped into new money vulgarity. This older model is a little more in keeping with old school luxury, despite being incredibly opulent itself.
I’ve always wondered, why is the climate control not automatic? It’s just fan speed and temperature, which seems like a bad omission for a car like this. I’m sure there’s a reason but still
The back seats of the rolls Royce isn't as fancy as the MayBach but it just looks like a private jet.The luxury of a rolls Royce is in the fit and finish and materials used. It's like driving a stately home.
They went to massive lengths to hide the fact that this car uses BMW sourced parts in a lot of its applications yet kept the exact same warning chime that you get in a BMW 328i. Love that.
i always thought the aft end of this thing was disproportionate. that long awesome hood, then the car chops off behind the rear door. a foot more of overhang behind the wheels with a nice trunk line would have been perfect - think the x350 jags
They still hold their value really well. $100k+ for a 13 year old car is impressive. I guess that's what selling only around 10k units on such a desirable vehicle can do.
@@Wasabi9111 I think it was more tire noise, then anything else, and also a bit of wind of course, but those tires, most have been old or something else because on those local roads at the end of the video, it was so good and beautiful watching him drive and almost no noise at all.
@@antoniomartins2900 I would love an ultimate isolation / relaxation cruiser. RR really needs to be electrified. No matter how refined the ICE is, it’s no match compared to an electric motor.
It's only BMW in name only that's where the similarities end its pure rolls engineering inc the engine even though the basis is bmw rolls have heavily modified and re engineered that includes the steering and suspension these cars are still handmade fully unlike anything else I have seen the video on the factory making them and the work that goes into them is phenomenal
i wish someone would make a 2 seater luxury car for a driver. sometimes someone is rich and actually wants to drive a car, why leave all the good stuff to the rear.
I thought all the Phantoms had a twin turbo 6.75L V12, not naturally aspirated but I’m no expert by any means. Was the twin turbo engine just an option?
Wow look at the beautiful thin steering wheel 😊 Thanks for the video Ted and hello from Finland! Hey did you notice in the backseat mirror some weird dude with a camera on his head can be seen! 😱 He sure didn't look like an English royalty 😉
It's a Rolls Royce tradition since the 70's I believe. I think it was there to remind people of RR's aircraft roots since turboprop/shaft engines are flown with a torque gauge. It's actually more useful than a tach on an automatic, modern ECUs have a power measure you can pull up on a scan gauge/vehicle monitor and it's useful to see when driving.
One should not forget that RR, Bentley, Lamborghini and the other small manufacturers would all no longer exist if they had not been taken over by BMW, VW and other large corporations. These companies had neither the money nor the technical know-how for the new assistance systems, crash tests, pedestrian protection, the constantly tightened exhaust gas values that are only possible with new filter systems and cylinder deactivation. In addition, every country has different requirements and regulations that an independent small manufacturer can no longer do everything. 30 years ago anyone could build cars, but today it costs huge sums to develop and test the new technology.

Great combination of external and interior colors. Also the wood trim.

Also, the way the interior is layed out reminds me 1930's and 1940's interiors, which is awesome.
