When brands themselves dont change their design language this happens, older cars look modern. Rolls royce hasnt changed their design language much since 2004 so its pretty much the same as a 2020 model in terms of exterior. You can even say that a 1990 kenworth w900 is timeless but its not, it actually hasnt changed since 1990, things look old when our taste changes our taste changes when the design changes, design didnt change, taste didnt change and so the thing looks modern.
In '04 I worked at the BMW assembly plant in South Carolina. Vehicles from overseas meant for delivery in the southeast would come through here for final inspections and cleaning so I saw a few 760s and Z8s on occasion. A Phantom came through and they parked it up front by the cafeteria for a few days. Massive is an understatement. You can't fathom how huge that car is until you walk around it.
A couple of other interesting features: When the engine is off, there is a button you can press that turns the fuel gauge into an oil level gauge. The other interesting thing is the controls that shut off the airflow to individual outlets are called Organ Stops, mainly because they mimic the look of a pipe organ's stops.
As others have said, for a near 20 year old car it still looks so dam good. Aged absolutely superbly. Only thing annoying me is the veneer finish on the sat nav surround. Looks different from the rest of the dash. Looks almost aftermarket/not original

i drive a small Toyota hatchback, and a few years ago i was driving and a Phantom came past me and completely filled my side windows as it dwarfed my car in size. just to give an idea, my car's roof line is about the height where the Phantom's side-mirrors are and my car can probably fit within the Phantom's wheelbase. absolutely gargantuan car, and it's brilliant!
In 2004 when both RR & 62 were competing at the same time. Maybach was definitely more optioned out for rear occupants. Both are certainly still elegant so many years later

This is because of the design language rolls Royce chooses to follow till date. Had it been a 2004 bimmer or a Merc people would've told it has aged. Now you like that aged style or you don't is a different matter. But it'd have appeared much more aged had it been a car from any other brand. Its because of the evolutionary and not revolutionary approach of rolls Royce engineers that has kept it from ageing. There's a psychological factor as well which I'm trying to point out basically. Nowadays people complain about marques not drastically changing the design languages, and keeping it simple and cleaner with newer models, take the new range rover for example. But there's a reason why brands follow that path.

Eh, I think it’s not really that hard to fix unlike the classic Royces… You know, the Phantom has the same engine as the BMW 7 E65, so I guess you can just use some OEM BMW parts to fix it. Same goes for the gearbox, air suspension, some electronics and control modules… It’s basically a fancier BMW in terms of maintenance. The bodywork’s expensive, though, as well as interior elements and other RR-exclusive parts, so in that way… I can pretty much agree with you.
Hey Doug you miss a quirk, when you open the rear seat arm rest, a padded leather square came in and fill in the space where the center armrest used to be so the rear seat will always look like they're uniform, that is a very interesting quirk
My favorite part was a small piece that Doug totally missed. When he brought down the rear center armrest, there was a panel that folds forwards to make the seat back flush again. Such a small detail that I didn't even think of before I saw it.
Several cars he reviewed has that panel behind the center armrest, I think he just skipped that part. It can be pretty annoying to hear him talking about the same stuff over and over again
I actually like that headlight setup a lot. Many modern cars, especially with LED running lights and indeed LED headlights, you can hardly see the turn signal for the glare. Having the actual headlights separate and lower down is a much better solution.
I liked the huge grille on this one. The newer phantoms appear to have a smaller front grille and they should have kept the huge grille like this 2004 model imo

It was definitely a worthy piece to bring up after talking about the ownership by BMW, key, seat controls, etc… I 100% know you might have completely blanked on it but in situations like this you normally link to other videos where you’ve done and in-depth review, etc… Instead, you didn’t mention it once. I drove a 2005 Phantom and got driven in it as well and I gotta say it truly was a great experience because no matter how big the speed bump we felt nothing it’s truly like riding on a cloud.
Def love the older phantom more than the new ones even though the new one is better overall but this isn’t still too bad and still has its reputation I’ve driven both but the older one like Doug said has its presence

The Phantom 7 has been out nearly 2 decades now, but NEVER have i known that the circle lights on the pre facelift models are actually the car's headlights!! I've always assumed that those are the fog lights. Damn, its because the in depth reviews such as this is what makes your videos so satisfying Doug.
The hood ornament it's a guide so you keep in the lane without going off the road ! If the ornament aligns with the white line on the road , you are in the lane correctly !

The one thing that really bothers me with the interior is the "leather" material on the door and bottom portions in the interior. Looks weird and cheap and the dark spots make it look dirty
The center arm rest looks like it has 136k miles on it, not 36k. The seats design has not aged well either. I’m sure the material is the best but looks like a seat from a Lincoln Town Car.
Fun fact: Rolls-Royce originally engineered this car to be perfectly silent with zero road noise, however testers became nauseated while in motion with pure silence, so they adjusted the cabin to allow the minimum amount of sound without causing sickness.
Think this car falls into the “if you can’t afford to buy it new, you can’t afford to run it used” category. The bills for Phantoms are absolutely stunning. If any engine parts need replaced they insist on fitting Rolls Royce components, which are three times as expensive as the BMW ones which are literally identical
I'm sure if you take it to a BMW indy shop it won't cost you much more to maintain than a V12 7 Series from the time. Mind you, that's not exactly cheap in the first place but its not THAT bad for the kinda car you get to drive
@@zachhaywood1564 - probably not much help but I recall overhearing someone saying about their RR getting a service and oil change in the UK with the transmission fluid topped up and it came to over £1200. As a comparison, most manufacturer's standard service in the UK cost anywhere between £150 and £300, generally speaking.
I worked at Manheim for years before COVID and got to be around just about every model car out there, no other cars ever impressed me as much as the Rolls Royce's and Bently's. As soon as you step inside you know your in something special. The materials are outstanding.
The first day I saw this car up close I was stunned. It is a sedan, but has the height of an SUV, and the build quality is up there. See Doug's height in relation to the car
Probably the last “traditional” Rolls Royce where the focus was fully on comfort and luxury materials as opposed to tons of technology that will date quickly, not to mention the last time Rolls used a fully vertical grille.
@@MattH-wg7ou But even the new Phantom is quite subtle with tech. Ofcourse it has the driving assist things and others but still you can spec it very subtle.
I disagree, I feel the current Rolls Royce models are still very discrete about the tech offered, and they do have a lot of tech. But just about everything in a new Rolls Royce is still greatly focused on the luxurious materials and comfort. One of my favorite features in the new Phantom is the art piece of choice you can have permanently displayed behind the glass in the dashboard, with the center screen capable of rising up or staying hidden away on demand in that same glass display.
None of them have great tech, even to date. That has never been a focus. Not much has changed to be honest. You may think this older gen phantom is simple but it's packing so much tech under the body, so many sensors. As for grills, not much has changed.
It makes me wonder how they age. I've never seen the frame of a Rolls Royce, nor most of it's internal components. It seems with many cars however that there's a sweet spot between the simpler ones (Older cars, economy cars) and intricate cars (BMW, Mercedes, cars with many features) in terms of reliability. Of course the average Rolls Royce owner likely will never own the car long enough to encounter these issues but it makes you think
I have seen some older ones, but they are mostly not driven like a ”regular” car and the old ones are owned by enthusiasts, and they look good but they do not drive good ,but comfortable
Regarding Reliability (same true for every Car under the German Umbrella): Take proper care of it as told and it will be reliable. But let me give some insight on early Phantoms especially here in Germany: Most Phantoms checked by the TÜV here in Germany (check wikipedia what the TÜV is to understand why that matters): Phantoms starting in 2003 still get their TÜV certificate after up to 120k-140k kilometers on them (75k - 87k miles) TÜV Certification only drops slowly after that, which means it's pretty reliable (for european needs and standards at least) Prost & Cheers from the Bavarian Alps
Ummm... Doug... the reason for the "regular" headlights being dim, is those are called "city lights" in Europe. I have "city light" bulbs on my VW Phaetons, but can't engage them with the USDM electronics. Working on it, I want them to be my DRL's instead of just having the headlights on. But the idea (in Europe and probably the rest of the planet) is driving at night on lit city streets you don't need so many lumens. This Rolls is kinda cool for making those "city lights" dedicated where "regular" headlights should be, with the actual headlights being those lower-mounted round things. Except, no fog lights. I can't imagine spending six figures and not getting fog lights!
I like cars like this that keep the future in mind, they hide all the tech KNOWING it’ll be outdated in the future, just so you don’t have to stare at old tech and you can see beautiful wood and leather instead.
u know, this still looks pretty damn modern... in fact, i'd say the current phantom is just a very minor facelift in the front and back...if u put this 2004 model and the 2022 model, their side profile is almost identical.... what a timeless design! And $110,000 is a bargain....
only a bargain when comparing to new cost without really taking in real life. This car will probably require $20k per year minimum in maintenance and could be functionally totaled if the right things break.
even if you have to spent, lets say 10.000 bucks each year, you are still better off with this one than the new one, and cheaper. This car really looks timeless
I can’t tell if that’s the weld or just sealant under the hood on the wheel wells near the strut mounts, but it is a stark contrast to the incredible workmanship literally everywhere else inside and outside of the car.
12:04 Surprised Doug didn't mention the turn signal stalk that always returns to the middle, regardless of if you have the blinker on or not. Old BMWs used to be like this and Doug always hated it (as would most people probably). The fact it's combined with an indicator that doesn't actually tell you which one is on seems like a really bad design.

Pimpassdaddy. I drove the 2004 model and though it's a ginormous car and you feel a bit nervous the first time you drive it, you get used to it. Fast forward 2019. I went to have a look at the new model. I sat in the drivers seat, looked at the spirit of ecstasy, and i was immediately very nervous. I sat in the back, got down and walked around the car. No word of a lie, i had a panic attack. I couldn't bring myself to start the car let alone drive it. Haven't been so scared in all my life, i was shaking literally.
Doug... The simple cup holders are made for champagne cups the keep the glass secured. In a friend of mine's the rear seat has a fridge for bottles as well

Funny how prices on those things change. A few years ago (like 5-7) you could buy these old ones for 50-60 grand. And now suddenly the prices went UP. The reason is, lots of them ended up in wedding companies. Those were very used to Rolls Royces being quite reliable even when technically neglected. Not this one. This Phantom is a lot more a BMW than a Rolls Royce. So they simply died and were broken down for parts. And the prices went back up.

I see what Doug did… the phantom can be found at 80k however at several occasions they can sell for 100, 110k so Doug took advantage of that so as to inflate the price on the bidders minds on cars and bids! Well played there
You're not going to find the lower end ones with this kind of mileage though... interior looks to be in great shape, relatively few issues. This looks like a good one. Those floor mats aren't original though, but most people wouldn't know.
@@tghidsgn I meant more like passengers that have never been in one before probably wouldn’t notice. But if you ever have, you’ll know the floor mats normally fit better and the heel pad for the driver is different. Normally has 6 squares.
I have a friend who has one of these. It’s in excellent condition and it’s ALWAYS in the shop. He would be angry if he saw Doug promoting It’s value as it costs him more than an airline keep running.

The Phantom and G Wagon (albeit to a lesser extent) are about the only cars that have been able to create and maintain presence on the road the same way for almost two decades. Modern models compare well to old models and long-term values demonstrate it.
RR maintains presence because it's the pinnacle of automotive luxury and comfort. G wagon has presence because its big...and it looks like barbie's truck
interesting point about the engine. The Phantom was originally designed to use a 9.0 litre V16 and some were manufactured but never used apart from the Phantom Coupe in Johnny English Reborn.

Yeah they were going for about the price of a two-year-old S-class before inflation kicked in. I agree with Doug I mean this is basically 2004 7 series BMW with interchangeable parts and you know how much of a disaster as far as maintenance that car was. The the motor the chassis all that is shared with the BMW from that year 04. If you can keep it maintained you can actually update this car by giving it more of a modern stereo with modern navigation and whatnot and actually make this more of a modern car then it is now. The problematic areas of this car or the air suspension and electrical problems not to mention some moderate engine issues. But for the money I mean as long as you're not abusing it there Fairly reliable just like Doug said don't get one that hasn't been maintained much so you don't have to spend 30 grand in repairs. Just remember if anything this is just a really really luxurious 7 Series from 2004 so expect there to be some kind of issue.
You got something important wrong - it is NOT just a more luxurious 7 series, it uses a TOTALLY UNIQUE platform, only sharing SOME parts with BMW. Doug even mentions that in the video. But yes, there can be problems, as with most luxury cars of that era (not only BMWs) as especially aging electronics are of course always painful. But as you said - maintenance is key
@@tobias_k01 it shares a lot of parts actually the superchargers obviously and various components. That year Rolls-Royce is the most problematic Rolls-Royce out there. 7 Series wasn't reliable and the parts they share aren't reliable so that's why I'm just saying mechanically it's a pain in the but to keep this car running. Not to mention you have to find somebody who actually knows how to work on these cars and there's not that many people who do rolls-royce's other than the dealership. Which makes maintenance extremely expensive if you don't know somebody like a car Wizard or you know somebody who knows how to work on these things. I wouldn't buy it personally I would buy a newer one most of the problems that this car had they fixed in the later models or made the parts better.

I saw one of these last spring, and it looked so modern. I still haven't seen the new Phantom yet, but that car is an evolution of this Phantom VII.
When brands themselves dont change their design language this happens, older cars look modern. Rolls royce hasnt changed their design language much since 2004 so its pretty much the same as a 2020 model in terms of exterior. You can even say that a 1990 kenworth w900 is timeless but its not, it actually hasnt changed since 1990, things look old when our taste changes our taste changes when the design changes, design didnt change, taste didnt change and so the thing looks modern.

In '04 I worked at the BMW assembly plant in South Carolina. Vehicles from overseas meant for delivery in the southeast would come through here for final inspections and cleaning so I saw a few 760s and Z8s on occasion. A Phantom came through and they parked it up front by the cafeteria for a few days. Massive is an understatement. You can't fathom how huge that car is until you walk around it.

A couple of other interesting features: When the engine is off, there is a button you can press that turns the fuel gauge into an oil level gauge. The other interesting thing is the controls that shut off the airflow to individual outlets are called Organ Stops, mainly because they mimic the look of a pipe organ's stops.

As others have said, for a near 20 year old car it still looks so dam good. Aged absolutely superbly. Only thing annoying me is the veneer finish on the sat nav surround. Looks different from the rest of the dash. Looks almost aftermarket/not original

i drive a small Toyota hatchback, and a few years ago i was driving and a Phantom came past me and completely filled my side windows as it dwarfed my car in size. just to give an idea, my car's roof line is about the height where the Phantom's side-mirrors are and my car can probably fit within the Phantom's wheelbase. absolutely gargantuan car, and it's brilliant!

This is because of the design language rolls Royce chooses to follow till date. Had it been a 2004 bimmer or a Merc people would've told it has aged. Now you like that aged style or you don't is a different matter. But it'd have appeared much more aged had it been a car from any other brand. Its because of the evolutionary and not revolutionary approach of rolls Royce engineers that has kept it from ageing. There's a psychological factor as well which I'm trying to point out basically. Nowadays people complain about marques not drastically changing the design languages, and keeping it simple and cleaner with newer models, take the new range rover for example. But there's a reason why brands follow that path.

Eh, I think it’s not really that hard to fix unlike the classic Royces…
You know, the Phantom has the same engine as the BMW 7 E65, so I guess you can just use some OEM BMW parts to fix it. Same goes for the gearbox, air suspension, some electronics and control modules… It’s basically a fancier BMW in terms of maintenance.
The bodywork’s expensive, though, as well as interior elements and other RR-exclusive parts, so in that way… I can pretty much agree with you.
Judging by the "bloodstain" in the trunk. I'm assuming the Phantom didn't have an emergency release? 😂

Hey Doug you miss a quirk, when you open the rear seat arm rest, a padded leather square came in and fill in the space where the center armrest used to be so the rear seat will always look like they're uniform, that is a very interesting quirk
I love Doug's reviews. So American. Always looking for cup-holders and judging the quality of them, like they are the most important parts of a car.
While Europeans scour the car looking for all the ash trays.
My favorite part was a small piece that Doug totally missed. When he brought down the rear center armrest, there was a panel that folds forwards to make the seat back flush again. Such a small detail that I didn't even think of before I saw it.

I actually like that headlight setup a lot. Many modern cars, especially with LED running lights and indeed LED headlights, you can hardly see the turn signal for the glare. Having the actual headlights separate and lower down is a much better solution.
Unfortunately, deep in its heart, this car is still a BMW, so the turn signals will never be used. Never.
I’d argue this is the best looking Phantom to date. Still looks modern and has a road presence like no other.

It may or may not have been on purpose but you taught me how many vital necessities are buried within that terrible system. It was definitely a worthy piece to bring up after talking about the ownership by BMW, key, seat controls, etc… I 100% know you might have completely blanked on it but in situations like this you normally link to other videos where you’ve done and in-depth review, etc… Instead, you didn’t mention it once.

I drove a 2005 Phantom and got driven in it as well and I gotta say it truly was a great experience because no matter how big the speed bump we felt nothing it’s truly like riding on a cloud.
Def love the older phantom more than the new ones even though the new one is better overall but this isn’t still too bad and still has its reputation I’ve driven both but the older one like Doug said has its presence

The Phantom 7 has been out nearly 2 decades now, but NEVER have i known that the circle lights on the pre facelift models are actually the car's headlights!! I've always assumed that those are the fog lights. Damn, its because the in depth reviews such as this is what makes your videos so satisfying Doug.

The one thing that really bothers me with the interior is the "leather" material on the door and bottom portions in the interior. Looks weird and cheap and the dark spots make it look dirty

The center arm rest looks like it has 136k miles on it, not 36k. The seats design has not aged well either. I’m sure the material is the best but looks like a seat from a Lincoln Town Car.

Fun fact: Rolls-Royce originally engineered this car to be perfectly silent with zero road noise, however testers became nauseated while in motion with pure silence, so they adjusted the cabin to allow the minimum amount of sound without causing sickness.

Think this car falls into the “if you can’t afford to buy it new, you can’t afford to run it used” category. The bills for Phantoms are absolutely stunning. If any engine parts need replaced they insist on fitting Rolls Royce components, which are three times as expensive as the BMW ones which are literally identical
actually it can be "cheap" to own if you have some knowledge on cars, im pretty sure most parts from a bmw will work on it including engine parts
I'm sure if you take it to a BMW indy shop it won't cost you much more to maintain than a V12 7 Series from the time. Mind you, that's not exactly cheap in the first place but its not THAT bad for the kinda car you get to drive
Do you know any exact numbers regarding the bills you get for it? Like for an oil change, tire rotation and/or replacement, new alternator, etc?
@@zachhaywood1564 - probably not much help but I recall overhearing someone saying about their RR getting a service and oil change in the UK with the transmission fluid topped up and it came to over £1200.
As a comparison, most manufacturer's standard service in the UK cost anywhere between £150 and £300, generally speaking.

I worked at Manheim for years before COVID and got to be around just about every model car out there, no other cars ever impressed me as much as the Rolls Royce's and Bently's. As soon as you step inside you know your in something special. The materials are outstanding.
And it was hard to compare the two, with the exception of the Mulsanne which also felt sub par to the Rolls Royces.

The first day I saw this car up close I was stunned. It is a sedan, but has the height of an SUV, and the build quality is up there. See Doug's height in relation to the car

Overloaded with tech is a car like the new S class, the phantom 8 just has enough to make it relevant in todays standards
I disagree, I feel the current Rolls Royce models are still very discrete about the tech offered, and they do have a lot of tech. But just about everything in a new Rolls Royce is still greatly focused on the luxurious materials and comfort. One of my favorite features in the new Phantom is the art piece of choice you can have permanently displayed behind the glass in the dashboard, with the center screen capable of rising up or staying hidden away on demand in that same glass display.
None of them have great tech, even to date. That has never been a focus. Not much has changed to be honest. You may think this older gen phantom is simple but it's packing so much tech under the body, so many sensors. As for grills, not much has changed.

It makes me wonder how they age. I've never seen the frame of a Rolls Royce, nor most of it's internal components. It seems with many cars however that there's a sweet spot between the simpler ones (Older cars, economy cars) and intricate cars (BMW, Mercedes, cars with many features) in terms of reliability. Of course the average Rolls Royce owner likely will never own the car long enough to encounter these issues but it makes you think
I have seen some older ones, but they are mostly not driven like a ”regular” car and the old ones are owned by enthusiasts, and they look good but they do not drive good ,but comfortable

Regarding Reliability (same true for every Car under the German Umbrella): Take proper care of it as told and it will be reliable. But let me give some insight on early Phantoms especially here in Germany:
Most Phantoms checked by the TÜV here in Germany (check wikipedia what the TÜV is to understand why that matters):
Phantoms starting in 2003 still get their TÜV certificate after up to 120k-140k kilometers on them (75k - 87k miles)
TÜV Certification only drops slowly after that, which means it's pretty reliable (for european needs and standards at least)

Ummm... Doug... the reason for the "regular" headlights being dim, is those are called "city lights" in Europe. I have "city light" bulbs on my VW Phaetons, but can't engage them with the USDM electronics. Working on it, I want them to be my DRL's instead of just having the headlights on. But the idea (in Europe and probably the rest of the planet) is driving at night on lit city streets you don't need so many lumens. This Rolls is kinda cool for making those "city lights" dedicated where "regular" headlights should be, with the actual headlights being those lower-mounted round things. Except, no fog lights. I can't imagine spending six figures and not getting fog lights!
You should have also had someone chauffeur you around during the review in order to get the full ownership experience Doug!
I like cars like this that keep the future in mind, they hide all the tech KNOWING it’ll be outdated in the future, just so you don’t have to stare at old tech and you can see beautiful wood and leather instead.
u know, this still looks pretty damn modern... in fact, i'd say the current phantom is just a very minor facelift in the front and back...if u put this 2004 model and the 2022 model, their side profile is almost identical.... what a timeless design!
And $110,000 is a bargain....

I can’t tell if that’s the weld or just sealant under the hood on the wheel wells near the strut mounts, but it is a stark contrast to the incredible workmanship literally everywhere else inside and outside of the car.

12:04 Surprised Doug didn't mention the turn signal stalk that always returns to the middle, regardless of if you have the blinker on or not. Old BMWs used to be like this and Doug always hated it (as would most people probably).
The fact it's combined with an indicator that doesn't actually tell you which one is on seems like a really bad design.

Pimpassdaddy. I drove the 2004 model and though it's a ginormous car and you feel a bit nervous the first time you drive it, you get used to it. Fast forward 2019. I went to have a look at the new model. I sat in the drivers seat, looked at the spirit of ecstasy, and i was immediately very nervous. I sat in the back, got down and walked around the car. No word of a lie, i had a panic attack. I couldn't bring myself to start the car let alone drive it. Haven't been so scared in all my life, i was shaking literally.
The rear seat is like climbing into the nicest living room you've ever been in. I'm in awe

Funny how prices on those things change. A few years ago (like 5-7) you could buy these old ones for 50-60 grand. And now suddenly the prices went UP. The reason is, lots of them ended up in wedding companies. Those were very used to Rolls Royces being quite reliable even when technically neglected. Not this one. This Phantom is a lot more a BMW than a Rolls Royce. So they simply died and were broken down for parts. And the prices went back up.
I love all your Rolls Royce videos. They were my introduction to the brand.

I see what Doug did… the phantom can be found at 80k however at several occasions they can sell for 100, 110k so Doug took advantage of that so as to inflate the price on the bidders minds on cars and bids! Well played there
You're not going to find the lower end ones with this kind of mileage though... interior looks to be in great shape, relatively few issues. This looks like a good one. Those floor mats aren't original though, but most people wouldn't know.

I have a friend who has one of these. It’s in excellent condition and it’s ALWAYS in the shop. He would be angry if he saw Doug promoting It’s value as it costs him more than an airline keep running.

@@manuelhnieves you know, that’s not a bad idea. This is his lifelong dream car but just last week, he replaced both of the fuel pumps at a cost of $5200. At this point he’s just about gone through the entire car with his Rolls-Royce mechanic. I think I’ll mention that idea to him. Thanks Manuel !
The Phantom and G Wagon (albeit to a lesser extent) are about the only cars that have been able to create and maintain presence on the road the same way for almost two decades. Modern models compare well to old models and long-term values demonstrate it.
RR maintains presence because it's the pinnacle of automotive luxury and comfort.

interesting point about the engine. The Phantom was originally designed to use a 9.0 litre V16 and some were manufactured but never used apart from the Phantom Coupe in Johnny English Reborn.

Yeah they were going for about the price of a two-year-old S-class before inflation kicked in. I agree with Doug I mean this is basically 2004 7 series BMW with interchangeable parts and you know how much of a disaster as far as maintenance that car was. The the motor the chassis all that is shared with the BMW from that year 04. If you can keep it maintained you can actually update this car by giving it more of a modern stereo with modern navigation and whatnot and actually make this more of a modern car then it is now. The problematic areas of this car or the air suspension and electrical problems not to mention some moderate engine issues. But for the money I mean as long as you're not abusing it there Fairly reliable just like Doug said don't get one that hasn't been maintained much so you don't have to spend 30 grand in repairs. Just remember if anything this is just a really really luxurious 7 Series from 2004 so expect there to be some kind of issue.
You got something important wrong - it is NOT just a more luxurious 7 series, it uses a TOTALLY UNIQUE platform, only sharing SOME parts with BMW. Doug even mentions that in the video. But yes, there can be problems, as with most luxury cars of that era (not only BMWs) as especially aging electronics are of course always painful.
But as you said - maintenance is key
@@tobias_k01 it shares a lot of parts actually the superchargers obviously and various components. That year Rolls-Royce is the most problematic Rolls-Royce out there. 7 Series wasn't reliable and the parts they share aren't reliable so that's why I'm just saying mechanically it's a pain in the but to keep this car running. Not to mention you have to find somebody who actually knows how to work on these cars and there's not that many people who do rolls-royce's other than the dealership. Which makes maintenance extremely expensive if you don't know somebody like a car Wizard or you know somebody who knows how to work on these things. I wouldn't buy it personally I would buy a newer one most of the problems that this car had they fixed in the later models or made the parts better.

I heard the reliability and maintenance costs on these are not that bad. The mechanical stuff is all BMW 760Li stuff.

They are, but they’re Rolls Royce branded BMW parts, which means even though they’re exactly the same, they cost twice as much.
I’ve noticed that just about any car he reviews that isn’t brand new always seems to be up for sale on his website

The attention to detail by RR is amazing especially when you notice that even the wood patterns continue on through the partitions
So many clueless individuals who have no idea whatsoever what a bottomless money pit these things are to keep running --- leaks, breakdowns, obsolete parts, parts costing thousands just because they say RR on them, and even more expensive if you have a RR dealers shop mechanic bend you politely over that shiny paintwork - and many other shops wont even touch them at ANY price.
