Pentax K-70 Settings for Waterfall and Nature Photography with 18-135mm Weather Resistant Lens

- In this video I use the Pentax K-70 w/18-135mm kit lens to show how you can get stunning waterfall and landscape images from your DSLR camera. Whether using a Pentax K-70 as I do, or any DSLR or Mirrorless camera, beautiful long exposure waterfall images are not difficult. Keeping your feet dry, however, is another matter!
I also give my opinion on whether you should turn off image-stabilization on your lens or in-camera when using a tripod in a waterfall or river.
I purchased the Pentax K-70 primarily to have a waterproof/water resistant camera for situations like this where if the camera did take a spill into the drink, the 100-rubber seals would go a long way in keeping the camera operational without having to send it back to the factory for drying out, or worse, ruined completely.

Nonetheless, WR is not the only benefit of this APS-C sensor camera. It's a tank, but it's also capable for producing excellent quality images, and performs better in high ASO than most cameras in it's price range, and above.
The sharpness of the camera's built-in stabilization, along with the WR 18-135mm Pentax DA lens make this a great bad weather combo, but also a great camera for any type of photography you'll need it for, from amateur to pro applications.

Don’t worry, this way your boots won’t get wet. I have the K-70 and just purchased the K1 Mark 2. Can’t wait to use it for Astrophotography and landscape. These are great cameras.

My understanding is when you use 2 sec timer, the IS is switched off automatically...
hmmm! Never heard that before but certainly could see it making sense. I've tried searching for clarification on that and haven't found it, but i'm still searching. That would be good to know and now I'm on a mission to find out if that's so or not lol Thanks so much for offering that insight. I will follow up here if I can find confirmation. And yes, I love this Pentax camera, I see so much potential for it and hope to get a lot of use out of it. More videos to come for sure in next week or so.
@@DozierGraphic I just tried it on my K1 II, K3 and KP. When selecting 2 second timer the symbol on the display changes from on to off..

After you posted that I've searched and searched and can't find any confirmation, but now that you've pointed out the physical change in the display that confirms your point. That 18-135 is an amazing lens. Perfect timing since I'm going to shoot a waterfall next week. Not many people mention the heads up display inside of the OVF. I really enjoy the OVF over a EVF. I think you can use the phone app to release the shutter. However that will eat the battery faster. This camera is a hidden gem 💎💎

It's great to see someone else using a K70 and explaining in detail the settings they are using. I'm still trying get to grips with mine as I'm still stuck in days of film cameras. The main issue for me is the ISO setting as back in the old days it was set by what speed film you put in the camera and that was it. The only 2 advantages of digital over film is that you can review your pictures instantly and the cost after buying the equipment.
The only difference in the ISO is that when used with digital is adds more and more noise to the image the higher you go. However, unlike film, you can go up to 6400 with digital before noise becomes and issue. With film, grain gets crazy after 400, but again, with digital, it's just an additional tool to add more light when you need it in low-light situations. Don't overthink it. Start with auto modes and learn your way around it. I'll have more film videos coming out in next few weeks also. Thanks.

If not for youtube, I would have never known about this camera. It's much better, in my amateur opinion keep in mind lol, than the $1000 price range canons, fujis, etc. I grab it more than my RP or Fuji for general shooting, so regardless of conditions, and even after dropping it once, it's such a solid camera. The K-50 would be just a little to out-of-date, so I'd go with the K-70 - I don't think you'll be disappointed at all, and you'll feel like you got a heck of a deal.

Nice video mate. Great little camera the K-70 brilliant value. I just leave IS on never noticed any difference when I've turned it off the few times I use a tripod.
I've gotten used to turning it on and off on my Canon RP when I do real estate photography on a tripod, but I honestly don't know if I'd notice any difference. 'They' say it's microscopic, but there. I guess if you're printing enlargements it could be noticeable, but my eyesight isn't likely good enough to tell if it causes a problem or not lol so, like you, usually it just stays on! I have a K70 & a K3-11 I like the K70 for the flip screen . My landscape lens is a Sigma 18-250 my wide angle lens is a Rokinon 14mm 2.8 its manuel focus lens which is no problem with the Pentax cameras as I use the Catch -In - Focus option on the cameras to make sure my pictures are in focus
I used a Sigma 18-250 with my Canon T-3i for years, great lens! And I love using manual lenses, with focus peaking of course, but sometimes those are more fun than autofocus! Thanks for watching!

How did you get the long exposures without over exposing , was it just the Polariser or did you use nd filters ? Thanks .
I don't remember the details of the video, but assume I used an ND filter. You'll have to watch for the details, but not difficult to get these results. Thanks!
Nice compositions! Thanks for sharing this test of the awesome K70. I have the same set up. Have you noticed soft corners at 18 mm? That’s the only thing that bothers me about this lens unless I’m doing something wrong.
You're not doing anything wrong. Most zooms are going to be weakest at the open end. Fortunately, from the tests I've seen from a few videos on youtube is those soft corners on this lens should sharpen up once you hit 21 or so. I imagine a LOT of my images would be at 18 if I wasn't aware of this, so I try to go to 20 or 21 if possible, but sometimes you need the entire 18! lol
@@DozierGraphic lol, thanks for the tip. Will try to go with a small aperture and see if the edges improve at 18mm. I’m also considering the Sigma 18-200mm, from what I read it offers better image quality.
I would still think youll have same issues at 18mm. Sigmas are good, I had an 18-200 for my Canon but its still not going to be ‘sharp’ in the corners. You almost have to go w a prime for that. but I NEVER let soft corners bother me because its only other photographers that would notice, and if you’re not printing no one can tell on social media. thats being too picky for me.
@@DozierGraphic yeah depends on how much pixel peeking you do. Agreed for social media soft edges shouldn’t matter.

ISO200 is still a waste. I would have shot ISO100 all the way 🤔
lol 'a waste'? I can guarantee you any amount of money there is no way you'll notice an increase in quality by going 100. Gong to 400 would be noticeable, but 100 to 200 is not something one would notice unless you are enlarging to 100/200% pixel peeping, which nobody other than photographers do.
