will the fret dots on the side go away ?
no, unless it is a very very very cheap guitar. I sanded my fender squire that is about $300 and the dots remained. thanks. ...did I use the word very too many times? lol

What about using steel wool?

I'll try and remember and get back to you if and whenever I do. I'm just not in too much of a hurry to do so. Perhaps I will experiment on my cheaper guitars, then maybe try it out then on my more expensive models.
