You were very brave to take this big job. I watched my Mom do this transformation (size 8 to a 22) on a dress that was purchased from a high-end thrift shop back in the day. I was astonished seeing the finished product, it was fabulous. ❤
@@MondesThreads when I do corset backs that wide I always put heavy fusible interfacing on the placket so it lays flat and then try to match beaded trim on the sides to cover as much as possible. Sometimes you can use Rit dye to make it more the color you need or use same color ribbon interwoven in the beaded trim so it looks like it belongs.
There’s a lot of cover you can do with ribbon if you have the time 🤣
Worse job I ever did was an older Alfred Angelo wedding gown ( do you remember the gowns with the colored panels? This one was a claret red with a red bandeau )
Anyway it was a 24 down to a 12
Took me forever and I did a tiered cascading bustle with 28 ribbons that tied together underneath

@iheartbridalcouture5989 goodness! Once upon a time when I was gonna get married I got that exact dress. Then passed it off to another bride who had to get married quickly and it fit her like a glove too! No alterations needed and since I didn't need it I just gave it too her. Memories 😅
Seems like lacy side panels inserts would be needed.
I think she should have gotten another dress, but since her heart was set on this particular dress, you did the best you could, Monde.
If the customer is happy, I guess that's all that matters. BUT. . . it's so frustrating as sewists when we end up with a product that doesn't meet with our own satisfaction.
I think the corset style was good but it was too much and it look bounce up. Your work is impeccable, but as a person who does alterations sometime we must say know.

I am in Mexico. Our son got married a week ago. It was a very high class event. Really. I had put my heart on buying the dress. Had a good budget. And I am size 12. I am tall and keep myself in shape. Guess what? I decided to go and rent a dress!!!!!! Best decision ever. I felt great in it. Soooo many compliments!!!!!!! Next monday back to the store. I look great in the pictures and wonderful memories!!!!

I’ve been a technical designer for almost 20 years and also work weekends in a bridal shop. In the 🇺🇸 especially, most people are used to wearing only clothes with a high level of stretch. They aren’t familiar with true formal wear and rigid, non stretch fabrics. People get really irate when I measure them and tell them the size they need… but they don’t get that you can always take fabric away. You can’t add fabric back! People also don’t know how and where to measure, especially the hip. They measure their high hip and not fullest seat and end up with a wrong size. Great job educating people, Monde! 👏👏
I use to have a friend who always dressed two sizes too small. Even when we went for bridesmaid dresses, she said, "Oh im going to be two sizes smaller by the wedding, so Ill just size down!" It kills me!
I have to say, it's really hard to know where to measure the hip. I have a big butt and lower stomach and never know if I should measure that along with the hip.
@@triciag3311yes, measure the largest part, and if there is part that sticks out beyond that (like if you measure around the butt and the tummy sticks out) then hold a yardstick up vertically to your tummy, and measure around the butt AND the yardstick. That gives you the measurement needed to go around everything while still keeping the side seams straight. 👍🏻

I remember when i was getting married and ordering my wedding gown. They told me i needed a size 8. I generally wear between a 4-6 and was thrown completely off by the 8. They said formal wear runs a little bit smaller, doesn’t stretch, and it’s easier to take away fabric than to put on fabric. Sure enough my gown came in, was super large on top and fit just right at the bottom. When i went in for my final fitting the week of my wedding i had gained a little stress weight and she had to let it out a little in the hips lol
She was in distress, but she was not in this dress.

After hearing her story, my guess is that she was told what dress to wear and wasn't going to add to the wedding stress and tell them that she had to get another dress. Nice people can turn into monsters during weddings. You did your best for her, and that's what counts.

@@dshe8637 Depending on the bride? It's entirely possible she couldn't. I've seen one too many cases of a bride going absolutely ballistic over someone getting the "wrong" dress if she specifically picked one out.

People make so many decisions planning a wedding. I used to do cakes for friends. And I realized that by the big day, the details have been forgotten. A similar dress in a similar color would have been great
I thought similar. She probably was more willing to wear unflatering dress than anger the bridezilla!
As a general rule go larger. A large dress can be taken in. A small dress cannot be let out. In essence you need an excess in fabric rather than a shortage of fabric.
And if websites offer measurements on their sizes, USE THEM. Especially if they are based in China, Korea, Vietnam, etc. because their sizes are super, super, super small.
I’ve shortened the hem on a garment to add gussets before. Some dresses you can do it, but I can only if it’s a 1 inch difference. Anything more and it’s a no for me also and I would just buy a larger dress and take it in. But on a thrifted garment I might take a chance if I feel it’s doable.
More like US sizes are super, super super big and distorted.

This!!! Had to order a bridesmaid dress for an upcoming wedding and I am a traditionally a medium 8/10 but the measurements online said I was a large 12/14. All company are different with their measurements.
I understand why you feel the way you do about that dress - for all the effort you put into it, it’s not your best work, and that’s not your fault! But in the end, if the client was happy with it, what can you do?

I think you described the situation perfectly; the dress wasn’t flattering altered. She spent money on it and alterations. She should have sent it back and found something else. 😢

I have a large bust and have always had to order a much larger size dress for formal events. You can't let the number on the tag upset you, because it's just a number.

I don't know on what planet she's a size 8, but it's definitely not earth. I am impressed. It takes real skill to turn a size 8 into a size 14. She should have just gone to a store and tried on dresses. It is much less stressful than ordering online.
Yes! I always try on dresses if it's an important occasion, as ordering online is so stressful, especially when something takes a long time to arrive and leaves little time to get another one if it isn't right!
Buy maybe she was told to order that particular dress and just made a mistake with the sizing... 🤷🏻♀️
Different makers have different sizing systems. She must usually buy upscale clothing in forgiving (loose) styles.
Or gone to a bridal store to ask them to take measurements. My sister lived in California and I in Michigan. She bought all the bridesmaids dresses. I was the only one from out of town. I was told only to let a bridal store measure me they know how to take measurements especially for anything bridal.
Honestly I think it was better than you think it was. I understand your perspective knowing your standards and wanting it to be better, but if I saw someone wearing that I genuinely wouldn’t think twice about it other than thinking it’s a pretty dress. I’m not saying the alterations make it a showstopper, but it wouldn’t be a “conversation piece” at all.

I've never seen lace-ups so low down the backside. It doesn't look pretty.

I would have tried to lace up in the armpit and along the side instead of the back for fear that I would affect the drape of the dress too much. That is such skillful work. I am in awe.

@@heatherduke7703. Yes, and to the skirt. On an a-line skirt, the skirt length can be taken up at the waist, thus widening the waist hole to allow it to fit onto the newly gusseted bodice.
Girrrl, you are a freaking magician! Sometimes you post dresses that women want altered and I'm just like, "Whaattt?!". I'm a curvy girl and there is NO way that I'm ordering a dress from ANYWHERE that I cannot try on first. For me, that is a rule that I don't ever break.
I totally agree with you. The style of that dress leaves no room for alteration, especially to take a size 8 to a 14, but oh well, if she was confortable that was her choice.
I recently had a friend of mine ask me to alter a dress with the quintessential Cottage core style, but the dress was too small on her, poorly made and with terrible fabric. So, since the fabric was not worth all the trouble of practically reconstructing the dress, I offer to make her a new dress in the same style and that would fit her better. Sometimes it is easier to make a dress that to alter (reconstruct or refashion) one.

I’ve been a dressmaker since the early 1980s. I would have refused the alteration. You are CLEARLY a wonder woman. She should’ve ordered a different dress!
For what it was and what she insisted, you did amazing. She should have 100% gotten another dress though.
Im just a regular person but I think it came out okay! However, you are the professonal and have an eye for detail. Im pretty sure that she was self-conscious, and every one else was too excited to care.
No, she should have gotten another dress. Even with your magic, it didn’t look good. I ended up having to purchase 3 different dresses for my daughter’s wedding and 2 for my son’s. Formal wear and everyday clothes seem to have very little in common when it comes to sizing. I worked in a bridal shop over 50 years ago. It was the same back then. You could never get through to people that what size they normally wire on a daily basis had no relationship to the bridal/formal wear sizes. We always measured and so many people were furious when they were told they had to buy a bigger size than normal, but if you want the dress to fit properly, you’re safer to go bigger.
Really enjoy your work. I sew, but alterations are far beyond my skill set and patience. You’re a miracle worker.

A lot of us have probably learned our lesson about ordering a dress that was made in a country where women are small & thin. An average woman in the u.s. is 5-3, 5-4 & 170 lbs., but not all countries are like that. 😊✌✌
Totally agree! I'm Brazilian and womem here actually have large hips, small bust, small waistline. It's impossible to buy clothing overseas that fits, because either we'll have lots of fabric in the bust, either short fabric in the hips 😅
@@msmunhoz I'm not Brazilian but have that sort of shape and buying online is a real pain, unless it's something custom and I can provide measurements. Things from China, especially, seem to be so tiny in the hips, and if you get a bigger size the bust and waist are far too big. I've learned my lesson and buy in person or from a couple of trusted Etsy shops.
The bottom line was that she wanted that dress and no other dress, and despite the (to my mind) awkward look to the back, she wore for its intended purpose and seemed happy with it. I'd call that a success.
when you know youre gifted and you are given something t work with that doesnt show that, it makes sense to be disappointed. I wouldnt want anyone to see that and think I purposefully made that dress

As always, your craftsmanship is amazing and that was the only solution that didn't involve side panels that would have just made it look like super weird. At least she was happy and didn't pull that whole, "I'm not paying for alterations because they're more expensive than the dress" tantrum!

Wow, I'm impressed you were able to do that much with it! Honestly, I doubt most people would notice the issues to that degree, especially if it looked good from the front. Also, she probably was just happy to have the right color/style requested. I think you did a fantastic job and it seems she was very happy and relieved, and that's more than she was probably gonna get elsewhere!

I think you're a magician. I can't believe you got it to fit her and, as usual, your work was incredible. To be honest though, if I was her, I would have bought another dress. The lacing just didn't go with the dress but it probably looked pretty good from the front.
She was determined to wear that dress no matter what, so at least you made it possible for her to do so. I just hope she didn't pass out your business cards to any of her friends! lol
It's not a disaster - I feel like probably most people wouldn't notice - but it probably would have saved everyone a lot of stress and effort to just return it and get something that fit!
I'm not sure what was meant by "promising the family", since it didn't sound like she was a bridesmaid, but I got the vibe she was feeling pressure to wear this dress specifically for some reason.

I bought from light-in-the-box in about 2014, for my daughter's senior school ball. We paid the extra for a custom fit, and they wanted the measurements in inches! (haven't seen a tape in inches for decades, had to convert)! The site had a very good measuring guide, and the dress was perfect. Fully lined, inbuilt bra, extra length for heels, great quality fabric. Delivery took about a month, as per their estimate. Was very happy with them
Hands down, she should have gotten another dress. But you are so kind to listen to the customer. She may have been truly okay with it. We sewers are perfectionist, and I find most customers don't get hung up on what we do.
Oh Monde, kudos to you. You did everything humanly possible to get her to buy another dress. Her reply to you after the wedding speaks volumes. She probably knew she needed to heed your advice. Years ago I was a bridesmaid in my best friend's wedding. She bought her dress two years before the wedding at a size 12. Two months before the wedding she was in tears because the people doing alterations basically said she was too fat for her dress and they could not fix it. Her now size 22 was never going to fit into a size 12. No matter how much I pleaded with her to please look for another dress she refused. We spent two months looking for raw silk and trying to find someone to do alterations. A WEEK before the wedding, someone finally said yes and altered her dress. Because we could not find raw silk (entire dress was made of raw silk and was a one of a kind design) the material, while the same color did not match and had to be hidden by adding to the sides of the dress. 10 years later she was divorced and the dress sold to someone else. A cautionary tale for all of when buying clothes for a special occasion.
You were Right. I never do alterations because people always buy something that doesn't fit them naturally and think " Oh, I'll just get it altered." I got into the mindset of how people that buy in-store all the time, but do not own a tape measure think. The item is too small and you have no fabric to alter up 2 or 3 sizes just drives me crazy and all the mind work of actually knowing the end result.....is not worth the headache to me. You are a sewing angel for dealing with these types of situations, especially the last minute roll ups😂. ❤

I thought you did a great job but you know best if someone needs another option. But maybe things didn’t go the way she expected and choose not to elaborate on it. That you will never know.
Oh my. This video reminds me of why I stopped doing alterations. Some women have unreasonable expectations. At least she said she was happy with the result and wasn't mad at you.

I think you did an excellent job, given what you had to work with. I do alterations pretty regularly, and even I had a difficult time conceptualizing the best way to fix this. All the different tucks and folds on it gave the appearance that it would be very difficult to work with, and I think you absolutely did your best, given what I outlined had you work with. 😊❤

Don't beat yourself up, this woman was hell bent on fooling herself that she was a size 8 and she was going to look like the model in the picture when she wore the dress.
You did a great job, not to your satisfaction or standard but giving her what she wanted.
Maybe the reality that she should have gotten a new dress kicked in, but knowing how you went to such lengths to give her this particular dress, she couldn't admit to herself or you that you were right.

Omg 😳 the bust was probably too small, the side seams didn’t lay right, I agree with you. Reminds me of a wedding cake disaster on Fire Island that I shouldn’t have agreed to 😭 I think I would have entertained side gussets from the armpit to the hem. That’s my answer to all alterations 🤣🤣🤣

I was thinking corset back until I saw the back. Then I thought of gussets at the side seams. I agree that although your work is wonderful, the dress back was not flattering on her at all.
You did a beautiful job with what you were working with. Ideally she absolutely should have gotten another dress, but she is clearly a people pleaser and didn't want to add more stress to her loved ones over the situation. I don't think you should regret doing this alteration at all - you stepped up to be the people pleaser that another suffering people pleaser needed, and I'm sure she appreciated the heck out of you for that.

I think you did an incredible piece of saving. And I can understand the issue, it does sort of look like it ought to be the front rather than the back. Maybe she should have gotten a new dress, but what you did made it right for her.
It's so hard to say no! I get it. I have been known to buy fabric and and similar pattern to completely remake A dress. Not in 2 weeks of course! People who don't sew are clueless and sometimes have no other options. You did a great job with what you had. We can't do magic...

As a sewing professional myself, I could go either way. Ultimately, if the customer is happy, that should be all that matters because they are the one wearing it. Most pictures are from the front anyway and if it’s about being in the agreed-upon dress in the pictures than the back doesn’t matter as much. People need to be more realistic about ordering what will fit them at the time of the order not what they hope to lose into or wish they were. Order something at least a little bigger because you can always take that in. Adding Fabric is hard in the way things are cut for someone larger is usually certain parts of the pattern piece are also longer not just wider. I agree with you, and I also think that you did the right thing.
I think you did a great job in an impossible situation. Wedding parties are notorious for picking a dress that only looks good on certain body types, so her dress not looking the best that it could have is not a new situation. She was happy so I think this was a win for you. Good job
- Also, she was between a rock and a hard place, because, who knows?, maybe the bride was more interested in the dresses matching for pictures. For whatever reason, the woman felt that the bride wanted her to wear this dress, so that's what she did .

Girl at 72 years old, sewing since I was about 5, alterations,etc. making wedding and formals, I agree another dress would have been my recommendation. However, you did very well working with what you had.

I look to you as inspiration and this was amazing. That she's a size 14-16 and ordered an 8 shows she's "confused," that she liked the dress after the alternations might be confusion, too. There are people who find bursting out of their clothing acceptable and you did a phenomenal job. Sleeves aside, perhaps folks just thought she'd found a new style. She probably got compliments on it! I have to alter a fitted woman's T shirt from a Med to an XL and this has given me hope!
You absolutely nailed it. At weddings there are many weird dresses, and people don't discuss it a lot. I guess if she had help dressing and all those ribbons were tied neatly, it really passed for a real dress. I agree that it would be better if she just bought another one, but it kinda worked. Bravo!
As a normal person, lol (not a seamstress) i think you absolutely did a miracle. You did a great job turning it into a wearable garment and while the back is not standard for the style, absolutely does not appear to be anything but an unusual back. Yes she definitely should have gotten a different dress, but I have to say you did as good a job as possible working with what was handed to you. That is an impressive amount to size up a dress.

You could be wearing the most gorgeous dress in the world, and if you don't feel confident, the dress wears you. That is a bad look. I think the corset alteration is actually cute. The only thing it needed was the back panel to be tucked in so it became smooth. I honestly like it better than the mesh and the zipper in the middle.
