Also how his relationship with Dr. Legasov developed. In ep.2 he's threatens to throw him out of a helicopter, they have ZERO respect for one another. By episode 5 they're each saying "No, YOU were the more important one in all this" to each other.

This grants him a rent reduction as well as a bigger house to live in, a free airplane ticket a year, free public transportation for life, access to entertainment venues, access to preferred treatment in medical facilities, and when he dies, his family will get a pension as well as the prestige of "wife of hero" or "child of hero" status which has it's own benefits.

ManicMeeks I really enjoyed your series of reviews/reactions to Chernobyl. Your blue glasses are very cute and you look good in them.
It's sad that Legasov's only choice was to commit suicide so that the world would pay attention to his words. I also felt sorry for Boris. He felt that he was insignificant. That scene with Legasov was touching "They sent a good man to Chernobyl. They listened to you." I felt absolutely no pity for Dyatlov and those other two idiots. They deserved worse, and so did the SOBs who approved that design flaw and let it pass.

or drink any dairy or egg from the Economy. We drank a lot of powdered milk and
ate powdered eggs for a good four months. Chernobyl was not the only Soviet
Nuclear Accident and not the worst Soviet Nuclear Accident. Since 1950 the
Soviet Union had 57 land based Nuclear Accidents. The worst of which more than
doubled the release of Chernobyl. These, for the most part, were in desolate
places and closed cities in Siberia and Kazakhstan and not reported. One
accident was in Leningrad/ St. Petersburg! They had releases of weaponized
anthrax among other things that wiped out whole villages. Those villages are no
longer on the map. Welcome to Socialism.

That scene in the beginning, the music reminds me of those old video documentaries you'd watch in class. It fills me with nostalgia, and sadness. Pripyat was a truly beautiful place, even by western standards.. And they lost it all.
Dyatlov was actually a very questionable person before this disaster. Rumour has it, he caused the death of his daughter, due to having been contaminated from an earlier nuclear accident he had survived. That said, he was largely responsible for the melt down, even though AZ-5 should have saved them, and didn't. The unfortunate thing about it is really that this would have happened. If not to Chernobyl, than another plant. Somewhere, this would have happened, and because of it, we have learned so much about safety when handling this type of fuel source.

11:51 You're right in everything in this.
However: The flaw in the reactor design was kept secret from them, because the party deemed it not necessary for them to know. Even the flaw itself was something the party deemed an acceptable risk. After all, nothing bad is allowed to happen in the USSR. And when the party says nothing bad happens, it simply doesn't. Regardless of what happens.
And if they would've refused, the result would've been being blacklisted from the industry, likely kicked out of the communist party (blacklisted from everything else) and possibly brought up on charges. Had this been during Brezhnev, most likely thing would've been to be charged with sabotaging the operation of the power plant.

It is incredible , but that man is still alive till today ! He is THE ONLY ONE survived from that team after hospitalization. There are few interviews with him on youtube but rather in russian ruclips.net/video/uPRyciXh07k/видео.html In real life as real Stolyarchuk says ... all depended on where exactly every of them stood and where did they go from that room. Cause there could be 50 roentgen where he stood for example and already 250 few meters away on the other side of the door. And as i understood in real life he was lucky enough and just did not move to the most dangerous places as others had to. Of course they couldn't know that at that time. Stolyarchuk not only survived ... but he also continued working on the other power plants in Ukraine after that ... for years ... AND ! this guy even was the Chief of State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine in 2017. So he is one of those who takes care of Chernobyl till now. All his life is connected with it.

I don’t understand what the authors of the show tried to say, what does the KGB have to do with the building and upgrading of a nuclear power plants or even drawing the budget of the USSR?

If you kill the messenger and burn the message, then no one will ever know, that's the whole point, the lies, they trying to hide the failures of the state to save face and pretend that nothing is happening, that's it

"hide the failures of the state" from whom? From the state?
Why Legasov negotiates with the KGB on the modernization of nuclear power plants? How can they make it happen?

@@Dragoot Hide the failures of the state from the people; and from other nations. The USSR was obsessed with maintaining its image as some sort of utopia. Part of maintaining this image was having the KGB control every little bit of information. If they retrofitted the other reactors then the workers would talk about it; and that information would spread like a weed. Plus other nations would be able to see this with satellites and spy planes.

The KGB was behind everything that happened in the USSR; they were the ones pulling all the strings. Apartments in the Soviet Union were actually built with two separate entry doors. One door for the tenants; a second door (and stairwell) that was just for KGB use. This was so they could arrest people in the middle of the night without the other apartment dwellers seeing anything.

@@Diraphe "Hide the failures of the state from the people; and from other nations." The court was closed to the people and other nations. From whom then it was necessary to hide the testimony at the trial?
"If they retrofitted the other reactors" Who are "they"? What does the KGB have to do with the construction of nuclear reactors?
"KGB was behind everything that happened in the USSR" Wat?! KGB secret police, not a shadow government. The government was the government.
"a second door (and stairwell) that was just for KGB use." Where did you get this absurdity? Point source.
Are you familiar with the concept of fire exit?
