That's the bad American writing. They didn't worship the State, and the State wasn't the tyranny. They worshipped the Party, and its idealistic official goals, and the Party, including its General Secretary who was the head of the government, was the tyranny.

@hammertapping Yeah, and Khomyuk also didn't exist, and I'm pretty sure Legasov also didn't just shout down Gorbachev for adjurning a meeting.
I think the show did a good job dramatizing the events, while remaining truthful where it mattered. It's just an opinion, though.
And the fact is, socialist states (not just in the USSR, but in the Eastern Block in general) prosecuted many of their own people for openly stating opinions that opposed the interests of the Party. Many of these countries still work the same way, they're just not so open about it anymore.

Another fun titbit: its not proven but there are widespread reports of otherwise logical and rational people behaving illogically when in extremely radioactive environments. Like he workers looking over the rails when they were explicitly told not to. There are reports of workers feeling dissociated or in a bit of a trance. Now this can be adrenaline, but there have been many speculations if maybe high doses of radiation are capable of directly influencing the brain.

Just couple days ago saw a report about a recent study on effects of cosmic radiation to people in conditions of Moon and Mars. The roof scene was a bit exaggerated to convey a message. A hole in your shoe wasn't an automatic "you're done, comrade" that's symbolic for all the people who risked/lost their lives in the clean-up operations (kinda like the lady scientist is a representation of all the scientists that came to help).
Don't get me wrong, what they've shown is exactly how they removed the debris and 90 seconds was exactly how much time they had (if you notice the sequence lasts exactly 90 seconds) but you wouldn't die for a hole in your shoe like that, if you washed your foot immediately after you'd be fine. Many of the liquidator are actually still alive today
If anyone's interested in the actual risks of radiation and radioactive dust I suggest checking out a bunch of Thunderf00t's videos on the subject.

0:37 No need to apologize for that. I mean you're not wrong, Mrs Ignatenko's decisions were stupid and irresponsible but we also have to recognize that she most likely wasn't thinking logically due to grief and shock at the events unfolding around her.

the current stuff going on in Russia is with regards to a nuclear powered missile (powered, not a nuclear bomb) going wrong, not a nuclear power plant, thankfully.
At least that's what we know from official channels.

Yeah, a nuclear powered cruise missile. Something that can continuously fly for weeks , maybe even months.

One of them told that they found an animal that was mostly slime, they didn´t know what it was till it meowd
Edit: I hope you´ll put the whole endcredits in the next reaction or maybe make an own only for those?

For the dog comments at the end, like episode 3, they turned down the intensity. Many of the animals had similar symptoms to the people. To your other point, the USSR considers pets to be unimportant next to the threat of contamination. They made the choice that was best for the state as they saw from their view what they thought the best choice was. Not enough people in power stepped up because that wasn't the culture. There are people alive today that did this because they had to. It's nuts.

If you're not checking out the podcast (during car trips or while cleaning or whatever) for these episodes, you really should. It's available everywhere. Spotify, HBO, any podcast app. You learn so much. The context is great. But you also find out what they toned down.
I'm glad I didn't get to see that firefighter's bones pull out of his arm when they lifted it or not having enough ammo for a surviving pet but wanting to avoid having it suffocate in the concrete...
    That shit just...nahhhhh

I’m enjoying your reactions. This episode was extremely hard to watch (we have rescue doggies in our home so major animal lovers), I think it was good to show the horrible job from a very young man’s perspective who has obviously never shot a gun and loves animals. Watching his shock and horror during the day was enlightening because it shows that the Chernobyl clean up harmed thousands of people both physically and emotionally. He’s drinking vodka liberally at the end and smoking. Probably anything he could do to dull his senses.
Next episode is fascinating and I think you’ll enjoy it. It isn’t so emotionally wrenching and it ties back in to the first episode l. Plus the end has real life images of the people involved and what happened to them.

I can't watch any of the scenes with the animals since those sorts of images hurt & haunt me forever after...but can't skip this episode since it contains many other important story elements. Love the brief cathartic (emotionally unguarded/transparent) moment where Boris has a totally legit fit about the misleading number the Germans were provided (setting the robot up for failure from the outset) & beats the stuffing out of that poor telephone. This was a fascinating, disturbing, and compelling series-it was so well done that it made me go watch "The Last of Us" bc Craig Mazin was behind that series as well.

For me those 2 soldiers sent to put up the flag tells the whole story.... they talk like they care about the sacrificed soldiers, like there was no alternative but it's just talk. They DIDN'T CARE!! This show wants to emphasize the heroes at Chernobyl and it's right it does so but in the end these people didn't really have the option to say no.

in the scene where they shot the cow. this did happen on multiple occasions. as well as people being shot for refusing to evacuate. the soldiers were ordered to evacuate all the people. if the people refused to leave git rid of them. all animals on farms were to be killed during the liquidation. as well as pets. nobody was allowed to stay. many people were unwilling to leave becuase they didnt know what it was they were fleeing from and they were told to leave during ww2 during the german invasion and many stayed, many believed they had already endured far worse than whatever it was they were being told to run from now. many of the elderly outright refused to leave. those who did leave told the evacuation was temporary. many people believed it was temporary. nobody knew how bad the situation really was. the people were told nothing. they were told over loud speakers they would have soldiers collect them. they were to be evacuated by bus. they were only allowed to take what they could carry on their backs. no pets were allowed. they were given 5 min from the time the soldiers arrived. all who refused to leave were killed.

It's not just about the dogs spreading radiation. It's the fact that they don't have anyone to care for them and they'll likely die painful deaths. It's more convenient for the state to just put them down than devote precious money and resources to care for them during their shortened lifespans.

02:40 Ah. Children? No. But... Yeah this one is tough. 05:44 Not a sociopath. Just a veteran who does what he has to in order to stay sane. Can you imagine getting drafted into the army then finding out THIS is your job for the next three years? Oh dear god almighty. :( 08:20 I'm not going to cry...famous last words. 10:20 Most robots don't talk today. This story was in 1986. Okay, I"m nitpicking. 15:40 Those men could only ever do that task ONCE. Ninety seconds was a lifetime's almost safe exposure to radiation. The courage of thousands and thousands--firefighters, plant workers, nurses, soldiers, etc. is testimony to what we as humans can be. 19:09 Ludmylla is still alive. She wrote a book, which is part of the source material for this series. That terrible asshat who was in charge at the power plant--he was sentenced to ten years hard labor. Meanwhile I really love the friendhship between Boris and Legosov. 21:44 The most recent explosion did not involve a power plant but a new kind of missile. 23:05 How do you force feed hundreds if not thousands of dogs and cats to take iodine pills EVERY DAY? And how do you deal with the fact that by now the animals themselves are radioactive?
