But they know associating with him would harm their own career.... I'm sorry, this stuff is scary, because it's a bystander effect on a mass scale. At what point do you stop being such a coward?
      Sorry, it makes me so angry. I know people don't want to get fired - but not even being allowed to sign a letter asking for a less toxic debate is as mild as you can get! And THAT gets you destroyed? If people don't stand up, it will slide into an authoritarian situation quickly.

      @@obiwankenobi687
      In fact I'm not sure the decision was made by BF either; they're afraid of activist fans cancelling subscriptions. The BBC is not so fan pandering - BBCs Doctor Who has casual viewers; BF only has fan consumers. Doctor Who fandom has a disproportionately high representation of neuroatypical and gender non conforming individuals partly because the hero is eccentric, so he attracts eccentric people. That doesn't mean they agree, but gender non-conforming people have a dog in the race on the trans debate, one side or the other - gender criticals say my sex is my biological sex, regardless of how I behave, regardless of who I fancy, regardless of what I look like, regardless of what I wear. The trans lobby on the other hand say biological sex doesn't have any bearing on what you are, so to the gender non-conforming offer identification as the opposite sex as a route to fitting in. So membership of either side depends on whether truth or conformity is more important to you; conformists go trans, rebels go gender critical. But the point is it's a fanbase susceptible to people choosing one of those two sides. Casual viewers mostly don't care; it's a bit of a non-issue to them. But the fanbase has a high incidence of people for whom it is a flash point.

    • @tomschutzer-weissmann5245

      There's also a political / philosophical side to it because "queer" was reclaimed in the name of queer theory, which many gay people don't want to be associated with because they consider it bullshit. It's a bit like assuming that a black person must vote Labour, etc.

    • @Gandalf606
      @Gandalf606 Год назад +2

      Totally agree. The opposite term to 'straight' was ofcourse 'bent'. But that got changed to 'gay', which is odd becuase the opposite of gay is 'sad'. The terms 'bent' and 'queer' refered to what were once considered 'abnormal orientations'. The terms are BOTH still offensive to many. So it is very odd that 'queer' is being brought back. If so, then the term 'bent' is also applicable. No, it's time the majority stand up to the aggressive minority activists who are trying to change societies language. No - they DON'T get to do that. Lagnuage grows organically over time. And not on the whim of fanatical narrow minded activists. If they insist on using the term 'queer' - then we ALL have a right to use the term 'bent'. Or ban BOTH.

    As much as there are people who hate us regardless. James Dreyfus has actually himself, done a lot for us transsexuals more than Graham Linehan has. James is one of the few, and I mean few, in this whole debate who has seperate the genuinely dysphoric who felt like going down this road was the only valid option after other options failed. Most people were more than happy to throw us to the wolves because they believe many older and slightly newer support "non-binary" and the monotisation of stuff that was a medical/psycholological issue. And I also feel for the people who were born intersex who have a condition that sometimes leads to cancer for a good number of them, cancer is quite common and it has been adopted as an identity and most of them get a lot of hate for it from both sides for how they are born whether they are for it or against it, some of whom are outwardly female and find out tragically that they cannot have kids, I don't consider it something to put on a flag. A lot of TS's are more than happy to side with women, but obviously unless more are able to speak out or whatever most will keep being lumped in. Graham Linehan meanwhile has gone as far as not even distinguishing us and has used AGPs, the easy choices and also his past behaviour with Count Dankula someone who I respect very much, I don't think he was sincere in his apology, he just did it to get an audience out of Count Dankula. James and Cherie Currie are the only big two who actually have opened doors for us to speak out as well.
    James is not transphobic, never has been, never will.

    I have one of James' Dr. Who audios, made by Big Finish. "The Psychic Circus", in which he plays one of the incarnations of the Master. I thought he was very good, and I enjoyed his performance very much. I would like to tell him this personally, and I wish there was some way to pass him this message. I would love to have seen James playing the Master on t.v. I will never buy a new Big Finish play now. James, your Master rocks and I will always thoroughly enjoy listening to your performance in "The Psychic Circus". My only gripe is that you weren't in it enough.

    I'd like to say I'm surprised at Stonewall, but I'm just not. As a gay man I've been more and more disillusioned with the way they operate now. If you're not the 'right kind of' gay then they'll happily destroy you without a moment's pause. I and my small circle of gay friends now avoid anything they're involved with or trying to promote like the plague. I can't speak for Lesbians, Bi or Trans people (nor would I presume to even though we're all labelled under the same banner) but for me and my gay (male) friends, the sad truth is we don't feel Stonewall really represents us any more. Just like a political party such as Labour can lose touch with its founding principles and the core supporters it used to represent, so has Stonewall lost touch with the (most) gay men. It went from an organisation that used to advocate for equality for same-sex relationships to one that, quite honestly, no longer seems to be interested in that core mission statement any more.

    James, I enjoy your work and your portrayal of the Master. I support your stance on these issues. I find it shameful the way Big Finish have treated you, especially as I have been a fan of theirs since the early days when Doctor Who was off air. I hope they will apologise and that you can reprise your role again. I find it extremely worrying that we can't have a sensible debate about women's spaces being made potentially unsafe, without it degenerating into name calling, cancellation and unfounded accusations of hate crimes.

    I’m so sorry that James has suffered for doing the right thing and supporting JK Rowling, when she was supporting women. How did it become that supporting women or anyone for that matter, was in any way anti anything else. Tragically this stance has and is creating such a negativity towards trans people, which surely is what Stonewall should be fighting against not perpetuating.
