I like Pat's simple honest answer. It makes him sad.
I've always felt bad for him because he lost Darby, gets back into music, misses a call from Kurt and then loses him too.
I'd love very much to hear what they recorded.. i still love Krist 🖤
I loved Dave Grohl’s more intellectual answer as well not to take anything away from the simplicity of Pat Smear’s answer.
You can see why Courtney Love hates Dave Grohl...hey he is a great human being!
@@MuatatedWastelander The song is called "I should have known"
This little 3 minute clip is the greatest little bit of Dave and Pat talking about Nirvana.
Yeah it's true!
Amen brother. ❤
I agree
Im a mid level fan... nothing crazy... and it choked me up on multiple levels. I wanted to hear soooo much more!
Agreed
You can feel the emotions from Dave and Pat talking about Kurt. Heavy stuff!
I actually teared up! I was a teenager when Kurt passed
Yes you can!
I've watched many interviews with Dave and Pat talking about Nirvana, but this is the first where someone has asked if they listen to the old Nirvana records. To hear them say they don't because it makes them sad put a real lump in my throat.
@@mcgarnacle21 yep..i think they meant they dont always do it, but they do sometimes, itd be impossible if they never listen to a massive band they were in that actually had good songs, everyone listens to nirvana at least sometimes ahahah
No fucking shit. It goes without saying, man. Really. You do not have to say it.
This is the most frank I’ve seen Dave and Pat discuss Nirvana.
Like Howard Stern or not, but his in your face interview style is what allows these discussions to happen. He's done it for years, it's shocking how it never gets old.
@@adamr9444 its still kinda weird though, these questions..
Not taking anything away but I feel like Dave has always found it difficult to talk about Nirvana and offered no more than normal.
Time heals. I think they are at the point in their lives, 30 years on, where they are becoming more comfortable talking about it.
@@adamr9444 I agree. The only other one who can do these types of interviews is Joe Rogan.
Dave’s daughter asking about Kurt... that one hit me right in the feels
Yeh 100%, I remember I was 13 when Kurt died and I was trying to find a way to make it to Lalapalooza they were supposed to headline (it was only later I found out that they weren’t really going to, but at the time Mtv said they would). Any I’ve mulling that whole shy thing over, and I think being shy is a by product of anticipated rejection, but when you have 100’s or 100’s of thousands of people there just for you there’s not much fear of rejection. Somehow it makes sense to me, and Dave’s daughter at 11 years who I have never met, just helped me to understand someone I idolized as a kid (and I mean it was bad, I wouldn’t wash my long hair because I thought greasy hair looked cool and only played fender guitars.
Damn, Kurt was one death I still to this day wish hadn’t happened and still don’t think was supposed to happen.
RIP, thanks for good stuff.
-Bandit, yeh sucks getting hit in those huh?
It gave me goosebumps🥴💜
A very insightful and intelligent child
i think sometimes we don't realize how hard it must be for dave, pat and krist to remember kurt and nirvana.
It rips me up still so I can only imagine for them
Yeah it must be like reliving some of those memories.
To LG LD you are absolutely right. I'm guilty of not thinking about how hard it must be on them. I love all those guys and I really wish Kurt was here getting old with them. God bless! 😊❤️🙏
Especially Krist. Every interview I see of him (even up to today) talking about Kurt you can almost tell he’s holding back tears.
especially Krist, they grew up together, had a dream, built the band, watched that dream come true. Just two guys from the Puget Sound
"is it too painful?"
"Yes"
"Yes"
Damn....
No hesitation whatsoever
@@domonicdecoco2410 losing loved ones hurts, it fucking sucks
Dave: "We actually recorded some stuff."
Howard: "Let's talk about something else."
hahahaha
brilliant
LOL
Lol
Not important, moving on....
I can only imagine what Dave felt when his daughter started asking questions about Kurt. It’s nice to see them look back so fondly on Nirvana despite the heartbreak that comes with those memories.
Yeah, part of why I've always liked them. I'm sure the constant questions get annoying (and I think for a time Dave did neglect to answer Nirvana related questions - generally around the time of the lawsuit between them and Courtney)... but for the most part he still answers, because he knows its important to people. And clearly, if 27 years after the band ended, his 11 year old daughter is listening and asking questions, its going to be important to people for a long time to come.
DG can dodge any question in an interview, but when is his kid asking then it is time to at least reflect on that.
@@spencerwillock great response.
@@spencerwillock yup..
"we actually recorded some stuff" how the fuck did Stern not ask Dave more about what he just said????? I can imagine them recording nirvana esc weirder foos style stuff
"I should have known" on Wasting Light had Kirst and Pat Smear both playing but as Foo Fighters.
@@0509killer no that was just the clip they showed he is referring to more recently when they made their new record, I wanna hear those!
Hardly Nirvana since Kurt was the main composer and lyricist but still cool toknow Pat, Dave and Krist are still working on stuff
I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Beatles free as a bird like thing in the works knowing kurts home demos
I need to hear this stuff
Dave's daughter seems a very empathic, deep and understanding person
She probably be a big name in her own right one day
yeah look what good parenting looks like. unlike courntey love and frances. years of manipulation, drug addiction, brainwashing and keeping as secret. i bet love lied like 10 times abour kurt when talking to frances about him.
Yeah maybe, but my mum thought I was an electronics wizard as a kid because I knew how to use RCA cables, so I'd honesty take it with a grain of salt.
It's nice that we get to hear about this stuff, but remember that no matter the emotions envolved, this is a pop rock band promoting an album. Every single time Dave is on Sterns show he asks about Nirvana, Dave & Pat both knew this question was coming & no doubt prepared their responses.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

A lot of people talk BS about Grohl and the Foo Fighters (a few times deservedly so). But one thing you can't deny: that dude never tried to make it using his former-Nirvana status. Kudos to him!
Very true. That first Foo Fighters album was all him, great record, then right after comes out with The Color and the Shape. He's definitely very talented
Aw man the way Pat said "It makes me sad" it hit me like a ton of bricks
I'm enjoying how Dave keeps looking back at Pat when speaking, seems like Dave is having a conversation with Pat & Howard just happens to be there in the same room, also Pat's voice & facial reaction has a few tears in my eyes....
Dave was looking to him for comfort and understanding.
I like how Dave turns to his bandmates while answering questions, as like it's new information for them.
Thats one of the great things about Dave. He is really aware and good at bringing his bandmates into conversation (making them feel they are part of it) on that kind of stuff so it doesnt come across as isolating them from him. Im sure they get the question a lot and are tired of hearing about Nirvana and Grohl... but Dave makes a very concerted effort to include them. Its also why he is so well liked as he does that many people. Inclusion is important in bands and among friends and Grohl is good at it. Rarely do you hear him talk in a "its all about me" way.
Well considering how close he and Kurt were and how his death affected him, I can’t imagine he’d want to talk about Nirvana very often, especially when he gets asked those questions so often in interviews.
And Howard tries to make it a 1 on 1 between himself and Dave
I think with the Kurt/Harper story it was ACTUALLY new information for the band, especially Pat. You could tell these 2 guys would share stuff about their families and us hearing this story for the first time is also the first time Pat is hearing it.
It’s because Dave has always been aware of how in the early days of ‘Foo Fighters’ when reporters would ask about Nirvana, it was a topic that instantly alienated and excluded his band members. Now whenever he talks about it, he changes his body language to avoid that vibe from happening
1:56 The glow in Pats eyes when he hears about Harper asking about Kurt is amazing!
Glad to see Pat get some acknowledgement from Stern. People need to understand how important he is to Punk Rock: starting as the musical leader of Germs... then joins freaking Nirvana in the 90's before becoming a guitar player in the Foo Fighters. He really runs the gamut of rock history.
I've never heard Dave and Pat talk so openly about Kurt and Nirvana, they usually seem on edge or as though its a touchy or hard subject. This felt strange but insighting to listen to, did not expect the topic of Kurt to come up at all.
Pat's face when Dave is talking about his daughter singing Come as You Are and then talking about her asking him questions about Kurt, is a true expression of curiosity and then amusement
about being shy... that's exactly what hendrix was like, shy when talking, and you put him on stage, and we saw what you got
Exactly. Same thing with David Byrne of The Talking Heads.
rest easy Kurt , we miss you every day
every fucking day
If that's her first question about Kurt that kid is going to be special. It shows empathy that is lacking in 30 year olds let alone 11 year olds.
Man!. I miss Nirvana. I love they have their own private sessions. I listen to Nirvana all the time and never get bored
Me too. Grunge was awesome
This is actually one of the most interesting conversations I’ve ever heard when it comes to Dave and Pat talking about Nirvana. It feels like they’ve been asked the same questions over and over about that since 1995. This felt different. Dave sharing that story about his daughter asking about Kurt for the first time recently kind of blew me away.
Once friends, always friends.
I'm a 45 year old man who was in high school when Nirvana exploded. I just remember all these great bands like STP, Soundgarden, Sonic Youth, Blind Melon, Black Crowes and others just releasing great music. I'm not one of those guys who rips music today because I have three late teenage kids who all have different tastes in music and I never liked it when people ripped my music.
Maybe here but not always the case. I booted a childhood friend to the curb countless times over the years due to being a jerkoff. I gave him another chance a few years ago and what do you know?...he’s still an asshole. Having said that, some people grow apart and others can go their separate ways because you realize the person who was supposed to be your friend will always be a jerk and will never truely respect you. If there is not mutual respect it’s a waste of time. I gave that guy way more chances than he deserved because I wanted to hold onto a childhood friend. In the end I realized he didn’t have anything positive to offer me and if he hasn’t changed in the last 20+ years he likely never will. He was toxic, manipulative, and tended to have a self righteous attitude.
Been waiting over 20 years for a clip like this. A big thank you to Pat for being honest and perhaps inspiring Dave to open up a little. Thanks for the music, Nirvana changed my life.
We play as if we're in Nirvana. I love them all so much. God broke the mold there.
Every time Dave goes on the show I think to myself, is there anymore possible questions Howard has about nirvana and I think surely not, yet here we are........
i think we're finally getting to a point where while it's still hard to think about and remember kurt, dave and pat can talk about nirvana in the way that fans have been asking for so long. this might be the only time where it hasn't felt like some elephant in the room. they were honest, genuine, didn't avoid the questions, but made it very clear that it still hurts them in some way every day.
"She wanted to know if Kurt was shy" 😭
That literally melted my heart
This is one of the greatest thing ive
watched on RUclips.
It really warms my heart to know that Dave has become more willing to talk about Kurt/Nirvana etc. in the last couple years
I'm really glad to see Pat still here making music. I liked him since he joined Nirvana. When he joined Nirvana, Nirvana shows sounded better and Kurt Cobain really liked him also. As far as I'm concerned he's just as much Nirvana as Chris and Dave. I'm so glad to see him still here with us.
I listen to Nirvana all the time... The songwriting is amazing. It's like nothing else is quite as good.
Same here. Melody, power, light, shade. They have it all.
Beatles are amazing
Same here, it's all I listen too tbh. Never will there be a greater band with raw talent.
what are you talking about ? Justin Bieber !
@@red149 Hahahahahahaha. *ROFL*
I’m eleven and know most nirvana songs by heart. I wish I lived in the early 90s.
It's almost impossible to hear a history of a great seminal 90's band frontman, inside a beautiful father and daughter new found moment, told by the frontman of a great rock band and surrounded by its members in the most honest ways. What a magical moment.
So many people ask Pat about Nirvana... I wanna hear him talk about the Germs!
I would love to hear what was Dave’s answer for his daughter’s question
yes we would
I envy his daughter for this 😂😂
Same I'm guessing he was pretty quiet around everyone. That's why she asked how a shy person can go on stage.
He literally answered it in the video...
He was like we don't talk about Nirvana in this house! Then made all this up.
It's sad but very sweet how much Pat and Dave still miss their friend after all these years
Dave and Pat have a huge bond
The end of the clip reminded of what Brock Lesnar (pro wrestler) said about his introverted personality. He's fine in front of 20,000 people because of a "buffer" between him and them...but in a crowd of people at a party, it's his worst nightmare.
That's what makes Howard one of the best interviewer's he almost can put himself into the position of the ones involved and by knowing their personalities he can piece together the moment,it's brilliant it's truly is and if you can't see that, well sorry your blind...
You’re right. He does talk over people a bit too much sometimes, but generally he’s very tuned into people’s thoughts and feelings!
Damn Howard should shout out that caller who gave him the idea for that question... this was a good moment
OMG! Its so great and heartwarming tbh to hear that they still jam together
I am now 46. I cried in April 1994. Only for one day.
Looking at Daves face there, brought it all back. God Bless Dave, Krist, and Pat. Nirvana lives on! Please never release your nirvana jams, keep them secret just for you guy and Kurt ❤
I agree with it all except why not release the new material? It would be awesome!!
It must be so strange to have lived through Nirvana and then hear a younger version of yourself playing music on the radio nearly more than 25 years later. I can't imagine what that must feel like... your youth, your innocence, your first blush of success all right there and then a full stop tragedy ends it all. it kind of makes me feel a little teary-eyed. Ain't gonna lie.
"It brings back the memories of recording... touring..."
and a guy named Kurt...who they've missed the most
It's so crazy the life Dave had by the time he reached 26. He did more by that age than some do their entire lives.
Nirvana will always remind me the best decade of my life .
This makes me so happy. I'm glad they're all still good friends and still making music together.
I couldn't listen to nirvanas music for many years after Kurt died and I was just a fan, I get tears in my eyes a lot of the time when I'm watching or listening to Kurt so I cant even imagine how hard it is for Dave, Krist and Pat
Just shows how strong the Bond of them to Kurt is still strong until today. That man was just something of a dude.
I could listen to Dave, Pat, and Krist talk about Nirvana forever
first time I have ever cried watching the Howard Stern show... RIPeace Kurt
30 years later it's still painful for these guys to listen to their own band..crazy
Agreed. There seems to be so much unsaid and things they haven't worked out. I think Dave has said to this day him and Krist still haven't had a real discussion about the end of Nirvana. Really interesting.
Yeah, the guy who they spent every day with for years while being the biggest band in the world killed himself. And the songs aren’t exactly Kurt being happy. I can understand why it’s still be hard
It's painful for a lot of people who lived through that era. It was definitely an integral part of my youth. I can only imagine what it's like for these two. I personally can't listen to the unplugged album without getting hit with some serious feels. I haven't listened to that record in 15 years.
I think they know things that they’re too afraid to talk about.
It was Kurt's band. He did it all.
Best 2 minutes 40 on RUclips so far this year!
I like that Pat always seems to have a smile regardless of the situation
what a great interview. nice to hear pat speak up. the story with dave's daughter was so touching and beautiful.
so emotional here in S Korea too
I’m glad he asked the question a caller asked him to ask.
Nirvana will forever be my favorite band of all time.
That sadness never goes away from Nirvana members and fans, because these are nice people like Kurt and Chris, but they were hurting and drugs made everything worse. Kurt's legacy is great, but I'm sure pat and dave would love to trade that and have their friend back.
Wow it was painful to watch this, broke my heart but felt warm at the same time to see them together. Love those guys hugely and miss kurt a lot
I'm so happy that they're still friends. Something that bad could have made it hard to still be friends.
That’s the best look into the Nirvana world I’ve ever seen. So short and so emotional. Heavy stuff from Dave and Pat. I hope more of that comes out.
That is why Kurt is a legend, shy yet so epic on stage
I don't think Howard realised when Dave said "We actually recorded some stuff" 😭 he's definitely kicking himself
1st time I heard Nirvana was of course SLTS in a small club in 1991, and the dance floor went nuts ! That bar played that song over and over, and everyone loved it. Nice change after 5+ years of hair metal and cock rock. Punk rock was here and I was 23, an awesome time . RIP Kurt.
I can only imagine Dave's face when
1) Come as you are starts playing on the radio
2) when his 11 year old starts singing along
I love this interaction.
Man.. Dave is the absolute sh##. Constantly willing to reopen old wounds & help others deal with the tragic lose. & tell awesome stories none of us have ever heard! What a great guy.
I can't believe this just happened. I've been digging up old Nirvana stuff and memories.
awesome to hear, really touching.
This is heartwarming to hear...they still play as Nirvana together (not for anyone else.) That must have been so surreal for Dave hearing Harper sing that...then ask those questions.
I think that was the first time I ever heard Dave talk about Kurt since he passed
It's nuts how a brief and random 2 minute chat about Kurt and Nirvana has gotten over 250,000 views in a couple days. Shows how much people love Nirvana and Kurt.
Every time Dave/Foo Fighters are on The Howard Stern Show:
Dave: Yeah, so this is our new album!
Howard: Is track 5 about Kurt?
haha. he will ask that for all tracks.
Wow.. In one way it hurts but it feels so good at the same time they break the silence to talk about nirvana and kurt. Thank you dave and pat.
These guys are so cool and genuine.
I love seeing Pat on stage - he always looks like he’s a guy who just got to play on a big stage for the first time ever.
"Like Simcoe, Ontario". Holy crap, that's where I live!
It must be so special to see the interest your daughter have for Nirvana and Kurt...
What I wouldn’t give, to hear those recordings.
"Is it too painful?"
Dave and Pat both smiling: "Yes"
0:44
I love Dave and the rest of the guys in Foo...but Pat is the guy that I just have a great appreciation for maybe the most. He is so quiet, unassuming and great. Sometimes I feel like Fred Armisen and Pat Smear are the same person.
How lucky are those that get to hang around with David Grohl in their lifetime.
I would KILL to hear music from Dave, Krist and Pat. I think they made it obvious they're not playing actual Nirvana songs, but I bet they create some great tunes.
Dave Pat Krist should cover Do Re Mi and release it as a single on one of the upcoming anniversary Nirvana dates... maybe a harmony of Dave and Pat singing Kurts words (which may exist on paper somewhere)... Pat gave Kurt the chords and melody to play with so why not finish off Kurts rendition? he clearly was going places with his rough demo, was going to record it. its a beautiful song that was brewing there. A real gem.
Something new from Dave and Pat about Nirvana..just wondering what did Pat; Dave and Krist recorded..now that would be awesome to hear
Man, I can't imagine how devastating it was for them when Kurt died. I never met the guy and it broke my heart (I had just seen them live. My first concert at 12 years old). My heart goes out to them ♥️♥️
You can still feel the love they have for Kurt and Nirvana all these years later
I love how Dave keeps turning around to engage Pat because the conversation randomly came up.
Love Dave, Pat and Krist, just happened to be searching for old Nirvana stuff and found this the day it was posted
Full of emotion. I felt them.
His daughter just sounds incredibly intuitive. You can tell Dave is absolutely inlove with her. He said one time his daughter mentioned all the other cars on road look the same, and she likes the van because it's different from the rest.
Thank you for sharing this. I think I can say it warms everyone’s heart. We won’t forget Kurt, the younger generations too, and Nirvana heck won’t be forgotten. As long as there is young people on Earth, it will carry on and on and on...
I can imagine safely that for every thing Harper learns about Kurt, he's going to be held closer and closer to her heart in a surprisingly large fashion as if she knew him in person, JUST because he was one of Dave's closest friends and one of the people that helped him toward success.
As soon as Howard mentioned listening to Nirvana again, you can see instantly in Dave's and Pat's eyes the instant sadness and pain.
Seeing these grown up men still getting teary eyed when going into that part of their memory bank, tears me up too!
NIRVANA STILL ROCKS! KURT COBAINS SPIRIT IS ALIVE & WELL! Omg! I loved hearing that the remaining members of Nirvana still get together and rock out!
