- Oregon is an incredible place to go birding and one of the main attractions is the coastal species that can be found there. We visit the Barview Jetties in search of Rhinoceros Auklets, and spot some other cool species such as Heermann's Gulls, Surfbird, and Black Turnstones.
Special thanks to the Burden family for inviting us out to Oregon!

"...that's more than every minute..." 🤣
The rhinoceros auklet looks very interesting.
Derek's facial expression when the horn went off right after he said they got the Rhinoceros Auklet was quite amusing. Awesome birds as usual!
I'm enjoying these west coast trips - especially on the shore. Learning about new birds we don't get out east!
Really beautiful
Love your persistence amid that annoying horn😮 So glad you were able to see so many other species during your quest for the Rhinoceros Auklet. Great job seeing some and on all your recording 👏 😊
Used to visit Barview jetty myself, especially in the 80s and 90s. Fall and winter were best. Rock Sandpiper was the target species. But in winter, and depending upon tides, waves would regularly sweep over the jetty. Wet jetty rocks are always slippery and dangerous! But being 1/4 mile offshore made it alluring for birds.
🏄♂️🌊 + 🦆🦢 = surfbird
That horn was something else, haha! I have to assume its purpose is something similar to a lighthouse (but audible cue instead of visual); warning seagoing vessels away from the jetty, right? You guys were determined to see your target birds though!! I admit I started just laughing at the horn after a bit. Especially at "Coulda done without THAT" !
Quite an adventure!
Yeah that’s what it’s for. It makes sense but super annoying haha
I’ve been watching for over a year now and love the content! One recommendation would be to be more specific at the beginning of the videos about the time of year, for example “the third week in September “. This would clear up a lot of speculation I have as a viewer about what else you might expect to see at that time.
Congratulations on the rhinoceroses auklet and the other cool new species you encountered in Oregon!
Those surfbirds are so cute!! 😊❤🐦⬛
The shore bitds are lovely to look at. I love plain ole sea gulls
Here in Pennsylvania we get alot of seagulls that show up at a few large store patking lots in the winter. I love to feed them away from tje cars. What was that horn blasting for?
To let ships know the shoreline is there. It’s purpose makes sense but it was quite annoying haha
Derek and Ryan you guys have got to go down to Cabrillo National Monument in San Diego County you'll see lots of the same Birds you saw there without that Dreadful horn also have really good views of other Shorebirds like long Billed Curlew. and also some Whimbrel's this area is in South San Diego County .
"we couldn't get quality views of the auklets"
me: *laughs in seabird*
The dreadful bird horn 😅
The range maps for shorebirds are a little misleading. Blue means non-breeding, not winter. So the birds you saw aren't super rare because it is expected to see BLTU, SURF, and even WATA in mid-july as migrating individuals. Just that association often throws people off.
