  • Monterey Bay in California is home to a variety of animals, including unique birds and marine mammals. We visited the bay with out friend and professional birding guide Rachel Clark to see some of these creatures, including a Red-footed Booby, Pigeon Guillemots, Western Gulls, and more.

Isn't Monterey a cool place to bird??? It had been a 20+ year dream of mine to go on a pelagic birding trip with Debi Shearwater, and when I visited the area in 2018 I was able to take two boat trips with the legend. On the second one, knowing I still needed Pigeon Guillemot for a Lifer, she detoured the boat a bit to an area she knew would have them and personally showed me my #500 USA Life Bird. It doesn't get better than that!

I happened to be taking a sip of water when you were discussing the "aroma" of the wharf and I about choked at that line about being much more upset if you opened your refrigerator and got the same smell! Great humor, you two are always such fun!
What an amazing place to see wildlife! I would've been useless for birding, too busy staring at the sea otter and the sea lions too, haha! Grats on that lifer too!!!

Aaahh... even more Memory Lane for me! Monterey, and its Fisherman's Wharf and Municipal Wharf sits high on my N California fave localities list. Did you eat a Crab Sandwich before leaving? That's delicious, and is a tradition for me to do when there. Sadly, last time was 10 years ago now, come September 😢
Congrats to that Red-footed Booby! That's officially a bird you now have in California that I don't have anywhere. At least I got Brown (Ventura harbor) and Blue-footed (S Salton Sea) on that trip 10 years ago, neither of'em a Lifer, though.
I love N California! By that I certainly also mean the real north of the state, like Lower Klamath and Tule Lakes in late March with all the ducks and geese you could wish for. California sure has a habitat for most bird species, from rocky coast to sandy beaches, desert, mountain ranges of decent altitude and rolling hills with oaks. My love for California birding is what has stopped me from getting to visit NE USA. So you two have a few birds on your list that I lack 100%. Has to be rectified at some point, that's for sure!
Not very soon though, we plan a BIG trip to Australia next fall...

Nice grab on the Red-Footed Booby! Amazingly we had one in Raleigh, NC earlier this year! I believe it was the most inland report of one in America (maybe the world?). It was on a pedestrian bridge for about 2-3 hours before flying off never to be seen again. Sadly - it was probably sick or lost and most likely perished - but still such an honor to see. Glad you were able to see it as it's one of those birds that you have to be in the right place in the world to see!

If you are still down there ABSOLUTELY TAKE A WHALE CRUISE! I got multiple lifers including Black Footed Albatross, but more interestingly 3 BLUE WHALES! (and Humpbacks and Gramps). Don't miss it. I think we were there early August so it should be similar for you

We have black guillemots which almost identical to pigeon guillemots, I believe you get them in the east aswell. They are so tame that they actually walk close to people to eat the leftovers from the fish stall.

I got a Red-footed Booby because I picked up a pelagic trip last minute, it was on the oil rigs off Huntington Beach, CA. I may have screamed and jumped up and down. It wasn't seen on a trip the next day.

Per Nat Geo “All half-dozen or so booby species are thought to take their name from the Spanish word “bobo.” The term means “stupid,” which is how early European colonists may have characterized these clumsy and unwary birds when they saw them on land-their least graceful environment.”
