that a great looking gun thanks for sharing. thanks too you and another friend here on youtube i just picked up a ruger p95 thanks again. keep up the good work on your videos
S&W 3rd Gen. handguns were some of the finest firearms ever produced. Mark my words, in time, these works of art will rise in value, and sought will be sought out by collectors even more than now.
Heck yeah man. I carry my 4516 every day and it's heavy as all get out but reliable all day long and accurate to the half inch. Worst case you're left with a very potent club! It does wear belts out pretty quick though. The galco carry -lite is holding up well after 6 months though.
The first centerfire semi-auto handgun I shot when I was maybe 14 (late-70's) was a S&W Model 39. I'd shot some Ruger Standard .22s, High-Standards .22s, and a couple .38 revolvers but I always thought that 39 was exceptionally easy to handle and shoot well. And about 40 years later I've finally added one to my collection...and it came with a 59-2. The 39's and 59's were sweet. It was when the handgun world changed to DA/SA and Smith & Wesson absolutely nailed it. And then polymers took over :-/ But back then the 39/59-series really changed it all.
I sold my 6906 to my brother in law like a dumb a . I bought a nice 5906 and I shoot it slightly better than my MP 40 with 9 drop in barrel. Recoil is minimal. These are very underrated . Love it never selling and these might gain a little value down the road. I bought 2 extra mags from midway USA which also sells parts for these
My dad and I were digging around and cleaning out the basement, when we found a fully loaded mag for one of the s&w sw45 series, but he had never owned one...
You know,I had a S&W 469. I bought it new in the 80s. It was the grandfather to the 5906. I think that series would have become the standard had the Glock not come out when it did. The police in NM switched from revolvers & started carrying the 469 but that only lasted a couple of years. Then there was a few yrs where they carried both Glock & the 5906. Glock won out. I really liked my 469 but traded it for a Sig 226 which I still have. Good trade but I do miss that old 469. It's great old steel
My EDC is a 6906. I also have a 6946 (DAO) and a 5904. Safe queen, no sir, they are all carry guns. Now to the "There heavy" comment, the 6906 is the 3.5 12+1 version, and with holster, it weighs the same as a M&P shield. 2 pounds, 1 once. My buddy who always said his M&P was lighter couldn't believe it, but the scale don't lie. He has the compact version, 12+1, so it's same-same.
Okay Dougie, let look at a M&P shield compact. It holds 12+1 of 9mm with a 3.5 inch barrel and with holster weighs in at 2 pounds 2 oz. My 6946 is a alloy frame 12+1 3.5 inch barrel 9mm and with holster weighs 2 pounds 1.5 oz. What am I missing here?
Weight can be a good thing. Weight tames recoil. Also, polymer is proven as a viable option but there is something reassuring about good old-fashioned solid steel. Thirdly, if you run out of ammo, you can beat your enemy to death with it.
I still have one that I got through a cop friend of mine back in 1988. It probably has over 12,000 rounds through it and has never had any problems. The only thing I really never liked about it is the weight, it's heavy.
I carried a Model 59 on duty way back when I just picked up a "like new" 5906. It shoot as well as I remember the 59. I probably won't make my EDC, but will carry on occasion. My EDC will probably be my S&W 469. Gotta love these older guns
I wish I still had my 5904 with squared trigger guard. The 5906 tactical magazines were some of the best made magazines imo, Glock being my favorite. If I wouldn't have sold it I wouldn't have my Gen 4 G17 though.
I have a soft spot for ALL 3rd gen Smiths, but I sold or traded all mine off over time. I had the DAO version, 5946 I think was the model number... trigger was like butter.
I have the 5904, black, not stainless,,,and a 3904 , the 8 shot version,,both in 9mm I bought them when they were in style,,great guns. keep them in the house and at work for protection.
Liked the video alot, but you made it sound like 15 rounds aint enough in a gun, I mean, I really love the 1911's, like you do, you know how many rounds they hold and also, my favorite handgun ATM is the SIG M11-A1, 15 rounds as well :).
@Armed defender Video Nice Vid. Question Just purchased a 5906 n it needs a Major Cleaning Can u show how to fully Disassemble the Slude n Frame Parts. I don't no the gun well enough to take it apart. If u can make a vid it will definitely be appreciated
The 59 and its ghetto cousin 915 are the best. The 915 grips, which you have on that 59, fit a lot of hands better, I've found, though a female friend actually prefers the 59 grip. She can have it!
I'd have to say I have a soft spot for those gen 3 S&W's. I have a 1006 and a 5906. There is something special about handling an all steel semiauto that you don't get with modern polymer pistols.
Maybe someday S&W will make a run of "Classic editions" or whatever they call it for their classic revolver styles for the 59 series. I'm not a huge fan of DA/SA but I love all metal guns. Don't get me wrong, polymer has its advantages but there's just something about the feel of an all metal gun.
I've had my 5906 for years, and it's good for shooting and...for throwing if you run out of ammo. Only had one ftf, and that was with some cheap ammo. Shooting it is a breeze, and that's where the extra weight comes in handy. Not enough recoil to mention.
Never really shot one of these side by side with a 92, but I think the 59 series would have made a good U.S made service pistol. The 92 is a pretty OK gun, but I never really cared for it much.
Polymer was fun,Smith needs to make a come back with Steel semi auto's So does Browning And Springfield....Imagine a Hi Power 19+1 with a rail...MMMMMM
Love mine .... bought it new in 1988.
Still one of my favorite 9's .....
Always loved that series, and you've really kept that in good shape...looks practically flawless
Agreed it´s a classic. I,ve just bought one last week and is a rock!!! it feels like a gun.
I carried a nickel 459 back in the 80's. I have a blued 59 that I have not shot in over 20 years. Love them.
The best s&w generation ever, solid dependable and reliable.
My first gun was a 5946 9mm, that was before he retired, my dad's service weapon at Memphis PD. I still have it and it has special place in my heart
that a great looking gun thanks for sharing. thanks too you and another friend here on youtube i just picked up a ruger p95 thanks again. keep up the good work on your videos

i've always wanted one of these. you just got a new sub

Sweet .. my 1006 will never leave my collection!
I wish they still made them!
Beautiful!

I have a friend who carries this as his duty weapon. At first I didn't like them but after time I have grown to love the 5906. Thinking of getting one
My dad and I were digging around and cleaning out the basement, when we found a fully loaded mag for one of the s&w sw45 series, but he had never owned one...
The 5906 was my very first semi pistol that I bought and I still carry it every now and than as I think it is very dependable .
I love mine too Its almost as old as I am it's 19 I'm 21 but never the less its a mighty fine pistol.
Tight! I still have my 6906! Warrior of a pistol.

I like the old smiths. My daily is a 908 (3913). Great pistols. CHP used to carry the 4006. Not surefire they still do.
My EDC is a 6906. I also have a 6946 (DAO) and a 5904. Safe queen, no sir, they are all carry guns.

Shield is much lighter. I am afraid you have bad ammo. And I would recalibrate your scale.
Jeffy2n M&P Shield is a small single stack with like 7 rounds. Are you talking about the Compact? Completely different gun isn't it? Or..... huh.
It's a family of.pistols. I was being specific to the model I was talking about.
Weight can be a good thing. Weight tames recoil. Also, polymer is proven as a viable option but there is something reassuring about good old-fashioned solid steel. Thirdly, if you run out of ammo, you can beat your enemy to death with it.
59 series. 69 series.. hell even the 39 series 🖤
for sure! and really, the start of "tactical" sidearms. simply by starting with capacity & 3 dot sights. the old model 39/59 were like 8 rounds still.
I still have one that I got through a cop friend of mine back in 1988. It probably has over 12,000 rounds through it and has never had any problems. The only thing I really never liked about it is the weight, it's heavy.

I liked my 5906 so much, that I purchased a 6906 to compliment it.
Love those old steel guns
Man i know this is not the S&W 659 but they sure do look alike and the design always brings me back to the film Reservoir Dogs
Yep, me too. I love the old S&W 59's
I wish I still had my 5904 with squared trigger guard. The 5906 tactical magazines were some of the best made magazines imo, Glock being my favorite. If I wouldn't have sold it I wouldn't have my Gen 4 G17 though.

I would love to eventually add one to the toy box!

I have the 4506 it is so accurete but so heavy and the decock feature is to easy to remove if you want to
Have several...great guns! Ranger
I'd have to say I have a soft spot for those gen 3 S&W's. I have a 1006 and a 5906. There is something special about handling an all steel semiauto that you don't get with modern polymer pistols.
wish i never sold mine... what an awesome pistol
Beautiful gun, I want one to go with my Ruger P89.
I prefer steel framed pistols and shooting a 5906 is one of my fondest memories.
I think the California Highway Patrol still carry these. Those boys keep it "old school".
The 5906 was my first duty gun.
Great pistol.
miller that gun would you pick a glock 23 or a FNS40 thanks
love my 5904, i just need to paint it since the blue on it is wore out.
I have a 1006 ,,,love it....

The 59 series were 15 shot and the 39 series were 8 shot. Both great guns.

That was the second gun I ever shot and said if I ever happened on one it was mine and well I am a proud 5906 owner :D.
Hey! Words don't control me!
I really like my 6904.
yep love the old ones . i still carry my Ruger P94 or P89,everyday,,heavy,, yep dont care..
What do you consider a go trigger pull? I have an 06 and the double action pull is smooth and I find it quite easy.
the 39 was 8 shots....the original 59 held 13. I DO NOT KNOW WHEN IT GOT UPPED TO 15.
That one is in very good condition..
chicago PD still carries them. well at least quite a bit of them do
Never really shot one of these side by side with a 92, but I think the 59 series would have made a good U.S made service pistol.
The 92 is a pretty OK gun, but I never really cared for it much.
Polymer was fun,Smith needs to make a come back with Steel semi auto's So does Browning And Springfield....Imagine a Hi Power 19+1 with a rail...MMMMMM
I've got a laser sight on my 5906 really nice, two small screws hold it on right in front of the trigger guard.
can't find a holster to fit it.
"1911 style safety"
You mean slide release? lol I know what you meant though.
MP 40 and SW 4006!
Is it heavier than a hi point?
ive got a soft spot for the ruger p95. old ugly thing. its the first gun i shot, used to be dads
A "hairloom?" It's heirloom.
The only thing I get for the 5906 is soft.
So you gave it to your wife right after she lain claim to it. Ain't it fun being married.
