The Crystal War: Part 1
Before the Crystal War, Varan wasn't considered to be particularly notable among Kaiju. He mostly spent his time in his underwater cave, sleeping the years away. And that was exactly the problem that he was facing. He had slept through the previous Vortaak invasions, and this caused him to gain a stereotype of being slothful. Pig, lazy, sloth, and many other insults he was called by from his fellow Kaiju. But the unofficial title of 'The Late Varan' is the one that irked him the most. Not all of them viewed him in such a light however, as he was great friends with both Baragon and Rodan.
Baragon was because of how social and friendly he is, always an optimist and and trying to see the best in people. While he wasn't as close with him as Baragon, he holds a steady relationship with Rodan due to him often being once as cowardly due to the methods with which he fought. Hit and run and using ranged attacks to an extent that others might see as excessive. This however changed with the previous Vortaak invasions, as he participated in both. Even Baragon was awake for the second Vortaak invasion, so he managed to avoid much of what Varan was going through.
It all resulted in Varan ending up as a bitter and cynical creature, even if he was always eager to prove himself. He finally got his chance when one day in which he was with Baragon, he saw meteors start to fall from the sky, with crystals coming up from the ground which they struck. A short time later, he began to hear calls across the island, calls for help. Baragon and Varan went in different directions, Baragon going to free Caesar and Mothra, and Varan going to free Rodan, Anguirus, and Godzilla. Their reactions at this were mixed to say the least.
Rodan offered thanks before flying off, Anguirus only gave him a quick glance before rolling into a ball and heading off, and Godzilla? He didn't even look at Varan, merely charging off as soon as he was free. Varan let out a growl and began mumbling as soon as Godzilla was out of hearing distance. This was typical of Godzilla, as he was always a glory hound. Perhaps he hated the idea of being outdone by 'The Late Varan' and so went off to try and find Kaiju to free. This among many other reasons is why Varan has grown to hate Godzilla, as he's had to put up with this for 22 years.
As soon as the various Kaiju around the island were freed, they met up with each other to decide on what to do next. Nobody knew what was going on apparently, and even Mothra admitted that the nature of the crystals were a mystery to her. A rare admittance of ignorance from her, and one that Varan couldn't help but smile at. He was a spiteful creature at times, and he knew it. Baragon managed to prevent him from being outright hateful of everyone around him, but Varan was still always frustrated with his place in the world, and he let other know it primarily through body language.
He wasn't much for talking with those that he didn't like, as those that he didn't like he often had a bad history with. Especially with Godzilla. In fact, Varan's scars often tended to itch whenever he was around or thought about the King Of The Monsters. They decided that what was happening on the island would likely be going on throughout the rest of the world as well, and so they decided to head out from the island and check up on other places. Varan arrived at the Human base on the island first, and found it to have been abandoned, likely when the meteors first started coming down.
Varan didn't hate Humans, but he wasn't too fond of them either, as they had an annoying tendency to start messing with things that they shouldn't. So he had little problems with tearing down the loud things that seemed to be producing energy. And surprise, surprise, shortly after they were destroyed the shields surrounding the place that were designed to keep them out powered down, and then the various Earth Defender Kaiju started heading out from the island. Godzilla went to Tokyo, Anguirus to Osaka, Caesar to Seattle, while Mothra and Rodan stayed at Monster Island.
Varan and Baragon meanwhile headed towards the Human city of San Francisco. And little did they know that it was there that things would start to spiral downwards for Varan.

Four Days had passed since Monster Island, and in that time Varan and Baragon had been travelling to San Francisco. Varan was quite unused to having to travel this far for so long, as it hasn't been since he first moved to Monster Island that he traveled such a long distance over such a long period of time. Fortunately, he had Baragon there to keep him company. Other Kaiju may perhaps view Baragons optimistic, happy go lucky attitude as a bit annoying over extended period of time, but not Varan.
In fact, he found it to be quite endearing. It was Baragon who first helped him find his home on Monster Island, and was always supportive of him, even after he missed the two previous Vortaak invasions. Their friendship grew over time until they got to where they are now. One could even say that one would take a bullet for the other, if they weren't immune to bullets anyway. There weren't that many Kaiju that didn't like Baragon. Godzilla didn't, but he doesn't like anyone who isn't Anguirus and Mothra.
Varan's a different story though, nobody who's name isn't Baragon or Rodan likes him. When they arrived at San Francisco they found that the place had been hit by several earthquakes, and had many buildings had begun to collapse. But the worse detail isn't the earthquakes, but what was going on inside of the city itself. An unusual kind of crystal had begun growing inside of the city, and where the other ones are colored cyan, this kind is colored yellow, and from how it looked had electricity sparking across them.
And even worse, there was a GDF mech inside the city, and one that is likely their best at that. Kiryu. Varan was quite unsure about this, as he hasn't fought a battle in a long time and he's fighting against a tough opponent. Baragon told him not to worry, and that he'll help him through it. From what Varan knew, Kiryu doesn't have as much ranged firepower as Mechagodzilla 2, and is more focused around melee combat. And it looks like the crystals have corrupted it's AI and made it much more incoherent than it's supposed to be.
The fight proved to be a satisfying experience for Varan. At first he wasn't sure about it, largely because of how the last fight he gotten into went. But in time they emerged victorious, as they managed to whittle down the mech over time by having one attack Kiryu whilst it is being distracted by the other. To Varan, being able to defeat an opponent in battle after so long managed to provide some measure of catharsis, especially with it having the form of Godzilla, the Kaiju which he has come to hate most out of all of his allies.
The battle ended with Varan jumping onto the mechs back and biting deep into it's weakened neck and driving his hands into it's back. As he tore it's head off and ripped out it's power core, he felt a strange warmth fill his body, and he felt more energized than he has in a very long time. He looked in front of him and saw Baragon's face, and saw pride in it, for both of them. Varan felt similar, this was THEIR victory this time, and Godzilla wasn't around to interfere or ruin the moment. And so he let a rare smile spread across his face.
But as he did so, he felt something else inside of him. Godzilla... Out of all the Kaiju in the world, he brought Varan the most trouble by far. And as Varan thought about Godzilla, the smile he once had faded from his face. Baragon noticed this and appeared worried and said "Bud, is something wrong?" Varan denied it, and told him not to worry, as they should celebrate their victory and how they managed to prevent the situation from becoming worse. And with that, Baragon went back to his cheery self.
And so the two headed out to look around the world for more trouble, but something was changing inside Varan, and not for the better.

Do you play from Wii or Emulator?
Wii U - we use homebrew to run the game off a USB. We still have a Wii, but it has trouble reading the Story mode and crashes.
