Everything comes at a cost... Superman was the only hope when zod came to conquer and terraform earth into the new krypton and kal-el was no tactical/ strategic fighter, he was so strong and durable he never needed to learn fighting.. and had no partners whom he could fight at an equal footing so he had no better idea on how to beat Zod with minimal environmental damage. That is superman was trying to beat Zod anyway he can to save earth before all is doomed.
Zod was bred as an elite warrior kryptonian. He had years of battle experience both mental and physical.
Batman says he saves people from the joker who doesn't deserve to live but doesn't kill the joker, and then joker goes at it again and again killing and torturing many.
